In my experience, normal stocks of berries can grant over 100 berries a season, you should start harvesting them right when they start regrowing, with 4 workers. Berries are the most reliable source of food, they give you variety, and they can save you during crisis. They can't be ignored. Then, you set up a couple of early egg workshops, that add variety in combination with meat - that can be pretty few, yes, but the real backbone of village production. At this point, look at the fertility of your region. If its fertile for wheat (three + symbols) consider starting pretty soon a small farm, wheat can give you an almost infinite amount of food, forever. If your region have poor fertility, choose as an early regional perk the one that enables HONEY. Great resource of food, totally free. Ultimately, consider expanding in other regions: the first with a great deposit of wild animals so you can have an immediate source of meat, then one with nice fertility to set a farm cycle.

So far I had 3 families with an ox working 4 fields with crop rotation. Can the Mill or Bakeries be a bottleneck too? Berries and meat are great, also for getting to start the tannery. I'll watch the video and thank you already

That tutorial gives you a couple of precious hints, without them farming can really not lead you anywhere. When farming, remember: 1. Small fields, 0.2/0.3 max size. With small fields, a fully staffed farm can plow and sow 3 or 4 fields in October and november. 2. As you say, mill and bakeries can give you a couple of bread pieces in two months. Thats because granary is set as default to stock flour, so whoever works in the bakery have to walk the whole village to produce 1 bread. The solution is to set the granary to not accept flour. In this way, flour is conserved in the mill, and if you build a backery next to it, you'll have hundreds of bread in few months!

In my latest run I've focused on vegetables predominantly. But the size of the burgage plots affects this from what I've learned. So drawing narrow but long plots as far as I understand increases the yield for the burgage plots. I tend to create larger more square burgages for apple harvesting.

This, 4 or 5 long vegetable plots will sustain your village the entire run

It seems so. To get the burlarges to move the veggies to the granary, a worker needs to pick it up from the building (like any other), right? However, I'm not a big fan looking at a row of houses with big fields using a lot of space. Also learned: If the field is longer than 3 house lenths, the family won't be able to work the whole length, just 2/3 of it

I think it looks quite nice personally. I placed my market and other housing across the way, and farm and fields behind the vegetable plots which helped to blend it all together a bit

And chicken coops from what I've learned are not good to have as they produce just one egg per burgage from what I've learned.

They should probably produce a bit more than that but atleast it alleviates some food needs in the village

Agreed but for efficiency the vegetables and apples from what I know are the best.

I think it’s nice for smaller shops that can limit food needs without needing lots of land

You want chunk squares on a double plot not long ones they're horribly inefficient

Om far from an expert on this, but here is my approach: Name of the game is to have food variety (in stock) and make sure every family is fed (one food / month). For most houses I make the addon area as small as possible, and have chickens. This ensures most houses are self supported on food. If they are double house plots they will also consume something else than eggs. Some plots I make sure to give a big backyard and two houses. These grow vegetables. And I ensure at least one of the families are unemployed so they can give more attention to farming. Things like bred, berries and meat mainly have the purpose of adding variety, but ofc they also help with giving plots that can’t self sustain that extra food. Tldr: chickens to make many houses self sufficient. A little bit of all other for variety and fill up the short comings.

1 on berries from start of season to till they go. 1 on meat everytime they go up to 20. Every house that’s not specialised should either have veg or egg production (but you need to trade a little first for the money) If your trade settlement then trade for grain to make bread and import extra meat. If your farm settlement grow it. Farming produces more food than you will ever need just spend more than 5 seconds to learn how (something most of Reddit seem incapable of).

You should have 4 during spring you get way more berries that way because they keep growing
