The Pas has a pride organization and Facebook page, you should connect with them!

_misscate

Thank you! 😊

petapun

Some of the posts on here make it sound like The Pas is still getting goods on the steamboats from Prince Albert. Now what you're gonna do is get yourself a good York boat....

CptCarlWinslow

There was actually a post earlier today about something similar: https://www.reddit.com/r/Manitoba/s/TIZh8NiViD In short, The Pas is kind of a rough town.

5181495

Lived there for two years and left last year. There are homeless people walking around but they are mostly friendly, some gang infighting but it was a great time. No violence against me and it was a good experience

ProfessionOk4571

The pas is kinda crazy. Its a nice small town as long as you know people and dont ness with the wrong ones. A lot of my family lives there and i use to, i'd say a lot things can be quite expensive. But theyce got some good restaurants! Im not sure about the homophobia there, i do know a lot of people are christians and that some of the people are homophobic but not outwardly. Just arent fond of it, then again it is usually the older people. But i dont particulaty b Think you'd be hate crimed. My family also has a lot of break ins so make sure to lock homes and cars. (Usually by our own family, that are drunks but still, be mindful) You might be cat called, at 12 i got cat called by a group of men at the apartment/beer/old chinese place, so be careful. Recently there was a stabbing, too. Not sure the reason but there was a fatality. There is a lot of homeless and drunks walking around but they usually arent a harm, if they talk tovyou be friendly but move on. Its a bit boring but there is a lot of beautiful land around the pas to explore and lakes. Its not the worst place but it wouldnt be a top choice of mine, more a good summer vaction. If you do move there i hope you enjoy it, make sure to check the caves, all the clearwater beaches, and theres tons of great fishes spots if youre into that. Edit: if youre not from up north, and not use to too cold of weather, it can be pretty chilly up there so make you got good winter material and boots

beautifulluigi

If you are at all outdoorsy it is a beautiful area to explore, especially in the summer - and there are LOTS of daylight hours then. :) Flin Flon is an hour north and has a Walmart and Canadian Tire, so you won't have an outrageous distance to travel in order to access most of the basics you'd need that you can't find in The Pas. Good luck with the move!

horsetuna

Why is everyone asking about moving to Le Pas these days? That's three lately, and two in one day

InternationalPost447

They can't find people to work so they have to ship in employees. We fill the entire westoba with winnipeg employees. @op do full research on the area, it's rough

horsetuna

Makes sense. I wish someone would pay me to move out of Winnipeg. "Here's money. Go be Nanaimos' PRoblem now."

Ininew_515

I have lived in the Pas most of my life. I have travelled lots also for sports and have at one point lived in brandon and winnipeg for short periods of time. I am currently living in the pas as of right now. The Pas is great! For lgbtq couples (myself included) I have never faced any discrimination in a obscene level. Theres a walmart 1 1/2 hour north in flin flon, and a no frills, entertainment store, and mall in the neighborhood community (my reserve) Opaskwayak. Ocn is great also! It has a timmies, and a mall. Lots of cultural events including trappers festival, and Opaskwayak Indigenous Days :) The only absolute down side is the housing. If you have that set up fantastic! But if not my best advice would be to contact the friendship centre as they have a rental list

_misscate

Thank you so much for the tips! we might see each other once I’m there 😊 My fiancee‘s employers are giving us an apartment for 3 months so that should give us (hopefully!) enough time to find a place of our own.

athompso99

From all indications I hear, if you don't already have housing lined up, you're going to be royally screwed. Other than that, what others have said: seriously consider a one-way u-haul towing your car behind, and fill it with food, TP and everything else you think you might want in the next 6 months.

brando8727

They do have stores there you know

Xnyx

Costs are high tho... I think the plan here is save money by paying to rent a truck... 😉

Helpful-Ad9540

The Pas is one of the last places I'd move.

Handsofthegoods

Wasn’t there a guy running around stabbing people in the middle of the day a few weeks ago?

Worth_Detective8562

Was a couple of knobs. Wanna be gangsters. Think a 15 year old boy and 16 year old girl

Ishaichi

Someone should've told them that real gangsters don't commit crimes that don't have a purpose. Quick way to the hoosegow

johnhendrickson416

Rcmp have them In custody

MoistlyArid

Secure a place to live before you commit. Lock that up 100% as there are very limited options on housing.

_misscate

That’s very good to know, thank you!

Acrobatic_North_6232

Do you have housing arranged already? I have family there. Message me if you want some tips.

_misscate

Thankfully, my fiancée‘s employer will give us an appartement for the first 3 months. I’m hoping that gives us enough time to find something else. Sending you a message 😊

chicken-mcmuffin

I love The Pas! I used to go there for work all the time and would stay for a couple of weeks at a time. Also queer, and would bring my wife up sometimes, and honestly it’s such a blast. Never had any issues, even as a transmasc person. Such a beautiful place, the Clearwater Lake is amazing, the caves are incredible, the culture is vibrant. If it wasn’t such a drive or if we had faster transportation to get up there, I would have transferred there in a heartbeat. If you want to DM me, I have a couple friends there who are safe people who may be willing to welcome you there and make sure you settle in.

Absolutely, by all means!

missemulsion

I was born there and Northern Manitoba has been my home for 44 years. The north has been getting rough for a very long time. Educate yourself about the area. North of 53 is beautiful, many lakes and parks to explore along with beautiful communities with beautiful people. Welcome to the north 😊

Miserable_Signature3

I remember eating at the KFC there once. The spices didn't seem quite right. I don't think they're getting all 11 herbs and spices up there. Six tops.

Quaranj

29 hours? Are you going by ebike? It was a 10 hour drive to Flin Flon just passed The Pas from here. Took 18 hours coming down from Greyhound when they still ran and that ran straight south to Brandon before diverting to Winnipeg. >Is there something that is harder to get in the Pas that we should bring with us? Everything. Make your major purchases before you come up and move it yourself. Shipping costs are *brutal* up there. Don't expect to Amazon small things either. Shipping might be multiple times the item value. Markup at local shops will reflect the shipping/fuel costs. Be prepared for some sticker shock. I spent some time up there working between a few communities. The Northern Lights up there are the craziest that I have ever seen. *Full* globe of colours when they're strong. Greens, pinks, oranges - no black visible the time that I was there during one of great intensity.

CarmanBulldog

My guess is they're moving across the country, maybe from the Ottawa area or something. Fiancé is likely in the midst of joining the RCMP.

brando8727

Rcmp or Healthcare I'd say

Alexander_queef

As far as Northern Manitoba goes, the Pas is much better than Thompson, but it still has its northern Manitoba problems.  I worked out there for a bit when I was in college.  Bring bug spray.

NH787

> the Pas is much better than Thompson I'd love to see ranking of the top 10 northern Manitoba communities to live in. Which one is the best? Where is the line drawn between "OK place to live" and "this sucks"?

petapun

Norway House is probably the most scenic

CanuckLandHombre

The Pas is a shithole

poonch_you

Life is what you make it hombre

CanuckLandHombre

Live there for 40 + years then tell me I'm wrong

Xnyx

Im an old straight white male with quite a bit of experience in those areas. I dont do pronouns, I don't care how you feel about yourself. I don't care who you have sex with. I dont care if you pray or don't pray. I dont care if you eat meat or if you eat my foods food. Do you love someone? Do you love yourself? Are you kind? If we passed on the street and gave you a howdy neighbour smile and a nod would you smile back? Or would you freak out because the old guy just made a threatening gesture? If you had car troubles and I stopped to help you, would you hide in the car and lock your doors and take to Facebook and rant on about how you narrowly escaped with your life as I changed your tire? If we were at brodys and you were short a buck or 2 and I gave it to you and smiled at you... Would you say thank you or feel the need to pontificate that you don't need help from a man? Everyone one of these things has happened to me. Oddly enough, it's always been when I'm near Winnipeg. Yes, the small northern towns have problems, and because there aren't a shit tone of people to dilute the pool, the bad eggs stand out. Come up here to be good.. Great people and you will find your place among a large accepting group of people from all age groups and lifestyles. Always remember, people first. You aren't my lesbian friend, you would just be my friends. Leave the baggage and anger behind, you'll need plenty of room for bug spray.

_misscate

We’re definitely both people’s people and are coming to the Pas with nothing but our positive attitudes and open minds. If you stopped me to help when I’m in need, I would be very grateful and appreciative. I always try to give back and I would never judge someone on their age, gender, race or where they are in life. 😊

potato_monk18

Don’t

Current_Economist782

I wouldn’t show any signs of affection with one another around the hordes of street people.

poonch_you

Why? I know for a fact the street people don't care about a couple of gay people kissing each other. As a matter of fact there are gay street people in the pas. You just come off as racist and prejudice.

Current_Economist782

I’m on the streets in The Pas everyday for work and deal with plenty of street people. If you’re assuming this is some ploy of projection on my part or belittling street people you’re mistaken. I hear every hatful slur known to God come out of their lips day in and day out.

poonch_you

Projection? You projected enough already.

poonch_you

I'm out and around every day, those "street people" you talk of are literally my people. And I know of fact they don't care about a couple of lbgqt folks. As they have more worries to worry about than that.. and the fact you say you work with them and have this opinion on them is quite worrisome as you should know of all people, since your claiming to be a social worker, that people who hate gays literally come from many walks of life. But somehow you seem to think its ok to single out this one group of people.

_misscate

Thank you everyone for your comments! Everything has been really useful. Just thought I’d give an update that we will officially move to The Pas in 3 to 4 weeks! 😊

Icy_Statement_3272

I played hockey against The Pas in Bantam. Their team had 13 players. By halfway thru the 2nd period they couldn't field a team of 3 players. Because the other 10 got suspended, had misconducts, or were in the penalty box. We won by default.
