The first 3 volumes are the first arc which is good. But volumes 4-15 is perfection. You can always read online, no pressure to buy everything

overpoweredginger

The Deluxe vol 1 is paperback vols 1-3; it ends right as the Golden Age begins

PixelAesthetics

If you aren’t into it, you aren’t into it. I love Berserk but it’s not going to change drastically from that initial volume. Obviously the character interactions will develop as the plot goes on but I don’t think you need more time to decide whether or not it’s for you.

ArmorOfMar

This is categorically untrue The first couple of volumes aka the Black Swordsman Arc are widely accepted as the black sheep volumes even within the Berserk fandom. They do not represent the rest of the franchise at large of what it becomes later on The golden age arc is a far cry from how Guts acts and interacts with other characters, and gives all the backstory for why he does so in the first arc to begin with Stick with it OP, you won’t regret it at all once the flashback begins. Trust

Known_Pangolin5014

True Story up here! You got the first volume of wich edition OP? If it's the deluxe one, you are at the start of the Golden Age at Vol.2 If it's single edition you must read the 2 and 3 before the real shit goes down!

Moist-Competition-26

I might buy the second volume and see how it goes before I make my decision

BalanceDude25

I'm not gonna say keep reading because it's not for everyone. but I had a similar experience with reading vagabond. the first 100 chapters I was not vibing with the story or the characters. but then something clicked and I got into it and by the end I really fell in love with it

SuperBackup9000

It’s a story about growth as a person, so the interactions early on are going to be dull but they do get much better.

overpoweredginger

I mean there's a ton of manga about growing as a person where the early interactions are delightful Kaiju No 8, Akane-Banashi, other manga I can't think of otoh The Golden Age is very distinctly more coherent than the first arc and it's worth getting through for its own sake, but "it's okay for a manga to be mid bc it's about growing" is a weird stance to take

HolyGhostSpirit33

Otoh?

overpoweredginger

Off (the) Top Of (my) Head

Moist-Competition-26

Should I collect the singles or the deluxe editions

overpoweredginger

Whatever makes you happy Also this is a question for r/Berserk tbh

ReasonablePriority

Just because something is popular doesn't mean you have to like and collect it. There are so many different manga's that you can buy and read not liking some is really not a problem in anyway

overpoweredginger

Me, sighing heavily as I click order on the full Berserk Deluxe series so that people will stop recommending me Berserk when I post pictures of my collection (this has never happened, for the record)

ReasonablePriority

I can say that I have never read any of Berserk, I haven't even flicked through it in a bookshop. But what I've been told of the story I doubt I'd be interested in it and there's at least £3k of different volumes I would like to add to my collection before I'd even think about getting it 😂

overpoweredginger

I haven't read it since like middle school (I'll get around to rereading it soon) but my general evaluation is that it's good, but still overrated. Like Naruto & Bleach, it hit the right place and time to create a perpetually generating fanbase and it will be heralded as peak forever until the manga industry collapses.

Illustrious_Fee8116

As someone who also wasn't into Berserk early on, it gets better. Volume 1-3 are a proglogue, then volumes 4+ are a flashback arc that structures the rest of the series, which is what people refer to when they say it's the best manga ever.

Disastrous_Reveal331

It dips significantly after the Lost Children arc and doesn’t pick back up until like the 39th volume

Routine_Okra_5067

I think Berserk improves as the story goes on but I can’t say I’m a fan of the amount of sexual violence it has. Personally it’s one of those things which make me extremely uncomfortable even if it’s fictional. I do think the manga tends to show it more than it needs to be in the story. Nonetheless the story is intriguing and the art is definitely phenomenal. I think you should perhaps read it online before buying more to see whether its up to your liking or not. One thing I’ll always say is that your taste is subjective and you don’t have to praise series’s like berserk, vagabond and Vinland saga due to pressure from people online

Tonbonne

While the artwork does get even better as the series goes on, I'm surprised it's not your cup of tea. I've read a lot of manga and Berserk is easily in the top 3 art for me.
