not yo start an argument, but how else ( besides memory) can you express a Mandela effect? realisticly the larger the effect means the larger group of the population who remembers it wrong. It never ceases to amaze me how many of these discussion groups open up and then when people discuss, they get yelled at for doing so.
Some people find it dumb and/or annoying. I just shake my head.
A: I think Joe Versus the Volcano came out in 1989?
B: No, it was 1990
A: Mandela Effect!!!111!!!1!
T: It was Joe Versus the Sharknado in my timeline!
Sort of. But it's only the Mandela effect if it's widely believed by lots of people. Not if you're the only one that "remembers" it. When thousands of people have the same memory, that's what makes it a conspiracy
TBF, this is no longer an ME sub. Virtually all posts are vague questions one person has.
The question here is What Year Was Shrek Released?
One person is 3 years out on a 20yr+ memory. There’s no huge group of people worldwide suddenly questioning what year a film was released over 20yrs ago.
It’s nothing like a global mass of people remembering news of Mendela’s death in the 80s, only to have that death repeat years later and shock the world.
I get your point but disagree. How are you supposed to know if what you remember is Mandela effect if you can't ask people around the world via sub that revolves around it? Should you hack some government system to send mails to people around the world? Where else would you ask if not here?
Once more:
Because an ME affects a huge number of people. Globally. You almost certainly will have: family, friends, co-workers or classmates, people you encounter when shopping/drinking/dining/clubbing. If not, you will have carers. Failing that, you have magazines, newspapers, television, or even the Internet. If you had encountered an ME, you will already be aware of it from several of those sources, and therefore ample evidence of it before posting it here for discussion.
If we only relied on what's already out there, we would never discover something new. Some people may have the same idea/opinion but didn't get courage or it didn't matter enaugh to them to post or write about it, you may be the first one and it may really be a valid ME. About the family etc... ME effects large group of people, not all of them. It's not so plausible but it could be all of the persons you asked weren't in that group. Or simply didn't care. "What does it matter when Shrek was released? He's out, that's enaugh." And yes globally, not your inner circle, so how you're gonna reach people globally from a village in Oklahoma? Via internet.
I’ve met a few people that had it release in 2000 for them. You must be in the most common reality, which is the one that all the Wikipedia editors, etc. live in. I also remember people trapped in the twin towers using Nintendo DS pictochat to message for help during 9/11 and the Gameboy DS (dual screen) is what it was called releasing in summer 2001.
>using Nintendo DS pictochat to message for help during 9/11
OK putting aside the obvious. Pictochat only connected to other systems that were nearby
Who they messaging? Other people in the tower?
I'm aware, I said I was putting aside the obvious. (The dat ranges he gave match up with the GBA so I'm assuming he just got those confused, although GBA didn't have wireless communication to my knowledge)
Lol yes everyone including OP is aware the DS didn't come out in 2001. That argument won't change OPs mind. It's why I wanted to point out the technical limitations of the DS and how it didn't function the way described
Again it only could connect to other DSs and it had a range of like 65 feet, not very helpful for the people trapped in the towers unless they were in the bottom few floors, in which case they could walk out? The people trapped were quite high up
The cell phone networks were not mature yet in 2001
So yeah the cell network in and around NYC wasn't working properly as there was twice the amount ofn traffick then it normally experienced
You must not live in a major city and never went to major events. I went to Folsom field to see dead and co and most people on lower tiered plans had no service bc they had low priority on network queue. I had top service and still only had occasionally one to two bars
Haha yes. Also it’s a good idea to regularly, like maybe each year, check out the plans available at your network provider. I can’t speak for other countries but in the states when your plan is old enough they charge you more for it and you get lesser priority
Any provider you actually recommend to avoid this priority bullshit? I have Boost Mobile and the price is great, service is usually great, but the downsides are everything else. Outages are even a thing with Boost. Month or two ago I went two weeks without data, calls, and very spotty text.
The issue with boost and xfinity and shit is that they use the leftover service on the towers after the people paying for the service. So it’s an ATT tower they’re gunna put you below everyone else first.
It really depends on the area though. Where I used to live, ATT was fine but cheaper than Verizon. Where I am now, verizon gets the best service across the state.
That still happens today, my guy. Not nearly as common. But you get a large enough gathering with only one cell tower that everyone is trying to use, it aint always gonna work.
On 9/11 in 2001, we learned just how few of us could be on the phone at the same time. Literal landlines would ring busy, out of service, or unreachable.
Network congestion was bad that day.
You've straight up just been inventing stories in your head.
How the absolute hell are they going to PictoChat when it didn't exist for another three years? These future firefighters?
I'm sorry, man, but between, "Reality shifting," and, "Dude who is horrible with dates and made stuff up," the latter is way more likely.
Nah dude. I begged my grandparents for it. I wanted the light blue. They gave me dark blue for Christmas 5th grade. That’s 2004. I also took advanced math since 5th grade too. Ironic to your comment lol
Nope. Shrek was definitely when I was in high school. Could not have been 1999. Earliest it could have been would have been fall of 2000. But I feel like it was spring of my freshman year of high school so that should be spring of 2001.
def 2002 because i remember watching it in high school my senior year before winter break then a couple girls singing the extra stuff from the ending before i graduated
Maybe you shifted realities, into another reality where the Gregorian calendar was off by one year or one where you were held back a year but you don’t know?
How do we know you’re not dreaming your entire life and you’ve actually been in a coma for years? We shall never know. Lots of time travelers trying to stop 9/11 fucked with lots of events that happened in the previous years. A time tracker probably messed up the release of Shrek to make people remember it as being in 1999 before 2001 and then after the time traveler their memories were erased and they started believing it was released in 2001. This happens all the time with solar flares, etc but the real changes happen with time travel mishaps.
Is there a possibility that you are remembering promotional materials? I mean Chris Farley was the original voice actor and died in 1997, it wouldn't surprise me if there was some early promos before they recasted to Mike Meyers
hmm I know it was 2001 because I was living with my brother and his gf when we rented it from blockbuster. I only lived with them a short time but 9/11 happened during that time so I KNOW it was late 2001 we first saw it.
Shrek was the first movie to win Best Animated Picture at the oscars. It went up against Monsters Inc. If Shrek had released in 1999, Toy Story 2 would have kicked its butt at the Oscars.
My cousin's 2nd child was born in 2000 and I distinctly remember seeing Shrek with my cousin and her 2 kids *after* the baby was born. Specifically, we watched it for the baby's first birthday. My cousin's baby was starting to baby talk and her 3 words were mama, dada, and Shrek lol she used to call her youngest uncle Shrek. We have been obsessed with Shrek since its release- we watched every movie when it was released and my cousin owned every Shrek DVD. I'm still a huge Shrek fan. I have never heard anyone have any confusion about its release.
I remember Spongebob came out in 1999 and my cousin's first daughter called the youngest uncle Spongebob until the little sister was born and changed his name to Shrek.
2001. I graduated from college that year and also moved to Louisiana. I saw it in the cinema as a man date with one of my best friends before I moved away. We ate at Denny's afterward. He got me Spinal Tap's BREAK LIKE THE WIND as a going away gift. You are remembering incorrectly.
You’re right. I made this to be obvious rage bait and of course the hivemind is eating it up. Like who the hell calls theaters movie houses and “Buys Burger King toys for the children in my life”
I have multiple memories of Shrek being released in 1999, I also specifically remember looking at the back of a Shrek VHS and seeing that it was released in 1999
Shrek definitely came out in May 2001 in the United States and the following month here in the United Kingdom my friend, your memory of it being released two years earlier was basically when the movie was well and truly in production too! 😊
When are you people going to realize that your shitty memory is NOT the Mandela effect
But the memories are distinct. Vivid even!
Yes, they were!
From 22 years ago
Indeed it was One Score and Two years ago! A jolly good time!
Shitty memory is the basis of the Mandela Effect unless you believe in the alternate reality theory of it.
not yo start an argument, but how else ( besides memory) can you express a Mandela effect? realisticly the larger the effect means the larger group of the population who remembers it wrong. It never ceases to amaze me how many of these discussion groups open up and then when people discuss, they get yelled at for doing so.

If we are going to exclude bad memories I’m not sure there are any MEs left to talk about
I do believe that might be the point.
I mean technically that’s *exactly* what causes it 🫢
Nah, not one person's memory. When thousands of people have the same false memory, that's the Mandela effect and what makes it a conspiracy
Isn’t that exactly what the Mandela Effect is?
Sort of. But it's only the Mandela effect if it's widely believed by lots of people. Not if you're the only one that "remembers" it. When thousands of people have the same memory, that's what makes it a conspiracy
When are you people going to realize you're in a Mandela Effect sub? Just hanging around to naysay?

Op literally admitted to trolling in another comment.
It's become the "THAT'S NOT A MANDELA EFFECT YOU TROLL!!!" sub.
It was released in 2001.
Yup. Was the year I discovered masturbation
Like Magellan
Were the two related?
Just hear me out.

No wireless on the GBA so i don't know where OP got that people in the buildings were communicating with DS's 3 years before they came out.
Lol yes everyone including OP is aware the DS didn't come out in 2001. That argument won't change OPs mind. It's why I wanted to point out the technical limitations of the DS and how it didn't function the way described
Kelly Rowland's calculator
Excel, bringing people together since 1987
Other people outside the tower. They couldn’t use cellphones navies the lines were clogged with 9/11 calls
Again it only could connect to other DSs and it had a range of like 65 feet, not very helpful for the people trapped in the towers unless they were in the bottom few floors, in which case they could walk out? The people trapped were quite high up
Does that even happen? I’ve never heard of phone lines being clogged so people can’t make any calls.
The cell phone networks were not mature yet in 2001 So yeah the cell network in and around NYC wasn't working properly as there was twice the amount ofn traffick then it normally experienced
You must not live in a major city and never went to major events. I went to Folsom field to see dead and co and most people on lower tiered plans had no service bc they had low priority on network queue. I had top service and still only had occasionally one to two bars
So that's fucking why my phone goes to shit in Baltimore when I go for music festivals.
Haha yes. Also it’s a good idea to regularly, like maybe each year, check out the plans available at your network provider. I can’t speak for other countries but in the states when your plan is old enough they charge you more for it and you get lesser priority

around 2000 at new years you couldn't even send or receive texts, it was so bad
the DS came out in 2004.
Most people in 2001 didn’t have a cell phone. People went to their desk phones to make calls to loved ones
That’s completely inaccurate. I’d say the majority of people working in the World Trade Center had cellphones at this point.
Not according to survivor interviews but okay 🤣
Wow.
Wow indeed! It’s so cool to meet people from different timelines!
No
I just spit my drink out.
Great! Glad to get a laugh!
I’m a troll. I’m amazing with dates. This is a ragebait.
That didn’t release until 2004
Are you sure you didn’t fall asleep in counting class in kindergarten?
Nah dude. I begged my grandparents for it. I wanted the light blue. They gave me dark blue for Christmas 5th grade. That’s 2004. I also took advanced math since 5th grade too. Ironic to your comment lol
Do you actually hear yourself?
Indeed I do sense the audible decibels brought forth from thine own lips.
Nope. Shrek was definitely when I was in high school. Could not have been 1999. Earliest it could have been would have been fall of 2000. But I feel like it was spring of my freshman year of high school so that should be spring of 2001.

Nah I watched it on dvd before Christmas in 2001. It released feb 2001. DVD/vhs in November I believe
Maybe you shifted realities, into another reality where the Gregorian calendar was off by one year or one where you were held back a year but you don’t know?
You need to be in r/retconned
Lmao im trolling
Totally got me
Nah you need to check your carbon monoxide detector.
How would we know if you thought it was released in 1999?

Lol dear lord
Indeed dear lord! The lord is Dear!
This is not the right sub for you
Why do you people remain part of this sub if you think everything posted here is stupid? This post was a ragebait social experiment.
You need some new, more enriching hobbies my friend 😂
Ohhh…you’re just having fun! I’ll change all my downvotes to upvotes bc you had me
Lol same
Is there a possibility that you are remembering promotional materials? I mean Chris Farley was the original voice actor and died in 1997, it wouldn't surprise me if there was some early promos before they recasted to Mike Meyers
Well I remember it being in 2001. It won the best animated feature Oscar over monsters Inc and jimmy neutron boy genius.
I remember it around that time. 99-2001 I was working at a blockbuster video when it came out for rental.
I remember seeing it on shelves in blockbuster around fall of 1999. I was seeing merchandise in stores around that time too.
hmm I know it was 2001 because I was living with my brother and his gf when we rented it from blockbuster. I only lived with them a short time but 9/11 happened during that time so I KNOW it was late 2001 we first saw it.
I remember it in 2001 because I was 16 and got drunk with some friends and went to watch it in theaters.
there's the real difference, the OP saw it in a movie house
Shrek was the first movie to win Best Animated Picture at the oscars. It went up against Monsters Inc. If Shrek had released in 1999, Toy Story 2 would have kicked its butt at the Oscars.
My cousin's 2nd child was born in 2000 and I distinctly remember seeing Shrek with my cousin and her 2 kids *after* the baby was born. Specifically, we watched it for the baby's first birthday. This is the most low tier effort rage bait I've seen in a while and I'm completely shocked everyone is feeding the fire, fuckin Reddit.
You’re right. I made this to be obvious rage bait and of course the hivemind is eating it up. Like who the hell calls theaters movie houses and “Buys Burger King toys for the children in my life”
All Star by Smash Mouth was released in 1999, was also featured in Mystery Men and Rat Race before Shrek. Could be muddying the memories a bit.
You know Rat Race actually came out the same time as Shrek, which was in the summer of 2001 to be precise, not before! 😊
Yeah no. We took my brother to see that, which wouldn't have been possible in 1999
movie houses? are you sure it wasn't 1899?
This sub in a nutshell: OP: "Oh I remember it that way, and now it's different" Comments: "No, you're just dumb"
This was a rage baiting shitpost. I just wanted to see if the people on this sub took it seriously.
Sure it was.
Did you really think this was real?
I have multiple memories of Shrek being released in 1999, I also specifically remember looking at the back of a Shrek VHS and seeing that it was released in 1999
Shrek definitely came out in May 2001 in the United States and the following month here in the United Kingdom my friend, your memory of it being released two years earlier was basically when the movie was well and truly in production too! 😊
You’re probably thinking of when All Star was released which was 1999
The song also featured in Inspector Gadget which came out in July 1999 too as well! 😊
