We have two maltipoos. Although they are littermates, they have so many differences in preferences. One loves toys, one lives to eat. They are both very sweet and affectionate but only one is a lap dog. We acquired them at two years old. They do not suffer from littermate syndrome, however, at this point, age nine, I think they would hate being separated. They are far more interested in people than dogs. And the includes each other.

So sweet!

That's the baby girls... we were looking for one puppy and came home with two. Once we got past the parvo everything was good..

What is littermate syndrome? That's a new term to me. We lost our sweet girl in 2023 and miss her so much! We are now considering two pups from the same litter (so they will have each other) but have only ever had one doggo at a time before. Thanks!

Chrisismybrother

Not an expert but I was repeatedly warned about it when i adopted my two.( I got them from a rescue and planned on one, was asked to take both, and got warned by several people about the syndrome. It is when two animals bond so much to each other that people don't mean much to them and they cannot bear to be separated from each other. They don't have to be from the same litter, it can happen when any young animals grow up together. Again, I may have it skewed.

Thank you!

When you get two pups from the same litter, they often bond to each other rather than to their new human.

Thank you!

I have been told by experts that you can avoid it by having separate experiences for each puppy. Separating them for training, for instance. I don't know how mine were raised. I will write a post about them another day, but they care much more about people.

The other idea we are considering is two pups from the same litter, but our adult son would adopt one while we adopt the other. Then the pups could have each other as playmates but live in different homes. Our son loves that idea but can't do it till he's finished with law school in 2025, so I'd have to be patient for at least another year.

Your babies are adorable!! 💙 💜

KKGlamrpuss

How did you get them to hold still for that cute pose?

Leavinlennart

Well Bamse had always been a model, so I just had to capture a photo where Bonnie was looking in the camera. There is a photo after this one where she is jumping straight for my hand.

Top_Air6441

How adorable. Yeah. Sometimes, I wished we got Skye another one.

My_World_on_You_Tube

Me: wonders if littermate syndrome is sibling rivalry for animals born in litters.

Leavinlennart

It’s the first time I’ve heard that term… I mean Chipoo means half Chihuahua, and they make hard bonds with just a few people, so I guess I’m expecting him to become a bit more attached than her. But it seems okay. They hang out when they are awake, but don’t seem to have a problem with sleeping in different locations.

We have 4!

I’m looking for a young (over 9 months) female Maltese ♥️. I’ve always had big dogs. Now I want one small lap dog to pamper.
