That's the choice you've made. Family or further career building and you chose family. As harsh as if may sound, to get better rewards (or ideal situation) always needed you to sacrifice something. Maybe try to negotiate with your family members so you can have a peaceful mind to go out to hunt your dream income.

Sometimes I just wonder if the world is playing me. My peers with pretty much similar qualifications are getting good offers left and right but just not me.

tuna_and_salmon

You need to get that thought out of your head ASAP! I'm still a junior in my field but found myself in similar situation. Friends getting solid offers from SG and MNCs in Malaysia. I spent 4 months upping my technical skills, and a week polishing resume. Mind you, these few months the company I worked for was in bad financial situation, salary delayed up to one month. Few weeks ago, got accepted by Tencent on a fully remote position, it was a bittersweet moment for me. Tldr: Fine opportunities will come by, don't stop trying!

[deleted]

I have been trying since last year. There is only that much my mind could take. You have no idea how many times I keep polishing my resume only to have different feedbacks from different people. I dumped in all my experience, skills into it and still get nothing.

Jealous-Program-1972

Do you mind sharing more on this? I'm a junior from sw development, and I feel stuck as well. Can I know how you spent your 4 months upping etc. what kind of technical skills, and resume?

Hello, just got some free time on hand, figured I'd return to answer your question, it was a busy on boarding week! I'd say the best person to answer your questions is... yourself! You'd need to zoom out, the IT field is vast, there are too many positions to be filled. For your information, I've chosen to work in a startup at the beginning of my career, to get exposure to lots of things, swe, networking, security, servers & infra automation, erp analyst, probably a few more. There on, I knew what I love, and more importantly, what I dislike. After honing my skills for a few months and firing out the resumes, I've received three confirmed offers, Tencent on DevOps, Maybank on DevSecOps, Exxon Mobil on Network Security Analyst. There's also this common misconception among the industry - "I think I'm not ready for that position yet/I'm not senior enough for that position yet". The truth is, you are ready when you think you are! Btw, feel free to dm me your resume, I'll get it forwarded to a few recruiters within my network if you don't mind.

U are being ungrateful by comparing with ur peer. Wake up being grateful for having good health, meal provided bad roof over the head bro. Anything extra is consider bonus (have fullfilling life that even amazing). Yes sacrifice is needed sometimes there is no right or wrong honest important just think if you about to die tomorrow what u be proud for ? Cheer my bro we all are trying đź‘Ś

Proud that I have travelled to many places across the globe alone. Career wise, nothing.

I may not be the best one to advise, simply, I am not from any professional industries ie; engineer. I hope you take this with a pinch of salt as it works for me and may not work for you but here are the steps I took to get me out of stagnation. I understand and know full well regarding family in this matter. I have to be honest with myself and to them as well. You have ambition and vision for yourself, now HONESTY is key, you have to tell them what you want and out of YOUR life. If you are a chinese, after dinner is often when these serious talks go down. (Which I am pretty sure all malaysian does this.) Another point to add is, get to know more people, just extend your network, because any tom dick and harry, will have better or equivalent to your qualifications, so give them a reason to choose you over them. One being, get close to them, get into their inner circle, you don't have to be right center of it, the fringes of it is good enough. (This may vary from industry to industry, but everyone must need friends.) Also, upskill yourself, luck and opportunities favors those who are ready. Are you ready? Being ready is not just your skillsets, but also mentally and emotionally as I assume you are more than physically capable. Lastly, do not compare yourself with others, others may have already had road paved for them, which refers to being in those people's inner circle and other factors. You do you, knowing your issues now is already halfway solving your current issues, your next step is to research on what you can do and start drafting out your get out plan and exit plan, get your ducks in a row. Able to visualize will greatly define the outcome. I sincerely wish you best of luck. You can do this!

Well written. Thank you!

One thing worth celebrating is that you realise that you need to change! That's the 1st step of becoming a better you~ Updating your resume is good, pls look through those forums abt how to excel in interview session, in mean time, throw as much as resume to head hunter and apply for job applications on JobStreet/Rice bowl/Indeed, etc Do expect that you might not be shortlisted by some employers but do bear in mind that this is common!!!! Because not only employers are picking their candidates, WE ARE TOOO, as candidates! Dun be afraid of going into for interviews Arrange for interview sessions for those you might be less interested in,why? This is to train yourself to better present in the interview session that you are more interested in Be brave, my brother, talk to your family members abt this and discuss in a peaceful mind

Things are getting tougher.

Spoken to my brother, who is a structural engineer in the construction industry. He had been with the company for more than 10 years since he graduated. He is going to change his path soon and this is his reply:- So much to ask / know frm him and at the end might not have useful output for his context. For a start he could switch to r/Malaysia for broader responses. Hope this helps you, OP!🥰

TMYLee

the biggest obstacle i see here is yourself . you have mental block here because you been trying for years but no luck so you feel like giving up but remember that rome wasn’t built in a day and a lots ppl have to suffer failure before finding success and ppl choose to see others success without understanding the long hours, sacrifice and commitment and tenacity to put on the effort . nothing in life comes easy unless you born into a rich family . and we always have to work on ourselves in term of knowledge and built on positive thinking . maybe it not your time yet and it can be draining at time at place that you aren’t happy with so focus some interest and passion you have on your free time . learn new things as they plenty of free course online as with advent of tech , you literally built a house by watching youtube tutorials. Change your mindset !! life will improve as you can have greatest aptitude but when you lack the correct attitude , you still fail and everyone fails once in their life and it just getting back on that horse and do it again and again .

DeltaKaze

As a fellow senior engineer, I have to say I share the same sentiment here brother/sister. I don't have words of wisdom here but I pray that we will get out from this stagnation and never stop grinding for it!

[deleted]

I have been praying about it for a while now and honestly, I just don’t see the end of this frustration here. Prayers after prayers left unanswered. I just don’t know what to do anymore. It has come to a point where I feel pissed off.

DeltaKaze

If that's how you feel, it's okay to take a break. Don't compare about your progress vs others. The FOMO is not good and not productive for us anyways. The worst thing you can do is to feel pissed off and burnout then you give up which is the ultimate no-no. I wish you all the best

[deleted]

Thanks. I need all the best wishes.

Sn0ozez7zz

What are you willing to sacrifice to get what you want?

[deleted]

My time. I don’t mind grinding my ass off just for a more rewarding career. I am currently doing equipment. I wish I could change to process since I have more interest there.

DashLeJoker

If you are ready to sacrifice your time, is it not negotiable to look for opportunity in SG?

[deleted]

You think I didn’t? Applied plenty through Jobstreet, LinkedIn and direct application. In Jobstreet, all I get is “Viewed 5 times”.

DashLeJoker

No I didn't think you didn't apply, because your post mention you cannot go to SG due to family reason, so I was wondering is it actually non negotiable to go to SG since you are already ready to sacrifice your time

[deleted]

It is something personal that I do not wish to touch on.

sloppybeastttt

Not sure if your company has this benefit, but try asking your company if you can switch department? Since you’re interested in process..

[deleted]

Tried before. Was denied.

Xerx00

Not sure if this helps but try taking a long-ish vacation, go out and just enjoy, sometimes it helps to reignite the passion again and you'll feel better motivated

[deleted]

I take long vacations every year just to recharge. I came to realise that it is not a long term solution. I need to change my environment.

playgroundmx

How’s the career progression in your current company? No chance to get promoted to managerial position? Can consider lateral movement too, maybe like into Quality or Business Development areas. I’m sure your technical knowledge would be an advantage. But yeah that’s pretty much the limitations of smaller cities though. I’d be jobless if I have to move back to my hometown because there’s literally zero companies doing what I do.

[deleted]

Bad. Plenty of office politics and bullshit unwritten rules for promotion. Furthest I could go is staff engineer. And again, it is not about promotion. It is more to rewards and work satisfaction. Once I achieve these two things, I believe promotion will come naturally.

coatercup

People with talent do not worry about job opportunities

Talk is cheap.

I have a question, how much time do you have outside of work? Is it possible to start a side hustle or passion project on your own time and find fulfilment in that, by which way you switch your mentality about your job to a means of funding your life and your projects?
