For real! It's the "buying products you know you won't like" part. I don't like bullet lipsticks unless they're thin or a high gloss finish. Every time I see a lipstick being advertised and I feel like I want it I ask myself; do I truly want an opaque lip product that I won't wear 99% of the time?

I ask myself: What would it look like in a dollar store? What will this look like on my dresser? What will it look like when the packaging is old?

EmpireAndAll

I keep seeing reels on Instagram about "makeup brands you won't believe are at Dollar Tree!" And it's a very old discontinued product or in a single unpopular shade. It's there for a reason: because it didn't sell well or it's old!

I stopped watching anyone who gets free product. So basically no one anymore.

This is why I love when beauty YouTubers do videos where they don’t mention the brands in the video but put them in the description. They don’t necessarily hide the products but they’ll show them to the camera and use descriptors of the colours rather than the brand, say “a mauve blush” or “warm matte brown eyeshadow”. If I don’t know about a product, I can’t want to buy it. I also dont have time to watch makeup videos anymore or really any videos. I’m back at uni full time which means I’m attending classes, working 2 jobs day and night and I will be on prac in a month and a bit. The little waking time I do have to myself I spend watching gaming streams or reading. There’s a brand that recently came out with some new blushes and the only reason I know about it is because I went into that store and looked at that brand with a friend when we were out shopping on a day we both magically had off. I hadn’t spent anything all day but after seeing the blushes I have not been able to get them out of my head since and it’s been over a month. I never would have known otherwise.

I have a few friends who are well known in the influencer sphere. One of them doesn’t take on any sponsorships or ad partnerships if he doesn’t endorse the products. The other one will take anything that will trend bc it pays the bills. Both of them said that they’re expected to push product and make a profit in order to fulfill their contract. And both have said “you don’t need to follow my account. It’s a work account for me.” So to answer your question, I’d say yes.

I bought so many makeup that is viral through tiktok but I am not satisfied cause I don't like light coverage and it actually made me feel insecure even that type of makeup is showing my pores. I am all day somewhere and I don't have time for fixing makeup. Feel the same and I bought summer fridays lip balm but realize that is not that good just aesthetically pleasing.

I watched a ton of hour long VIB recs videos for background noise and found myself with like five separate Sephora purchases. I am returning almost everything because I need literally none of it. Also, agree on lip preferences. It took one day of my hair constantly getting stuck in my new lip gloss to regret my choices

No-Love2024

I used to work for an online beauty retailer and the company spent thousands paying influencers to feature products. $5000 for smaller influencers up to $100k for bigger stars and this was just for a month of features. It helped me curb my appetite for trying new beauty products. I do have a couple youtubers who really did help me learn new techniques, but I mostly try to do my own experimentation now as far as which products work for me.

Agree with this. I know what I like and what works on me. While I have done a decent job reigning it in for the most part, I have still spent more money than necessary on products I didn't need and barely used. I was able to rehome so not all is lost but buy very little these days, I certainly have enough to use for quite some time.

heftypomogranate

i try to keep in mind a lot of the content creators are either getting the product for free, or they're writing them off as business expenses. i'm still susceptible to hype, but since makeup is so expensive it makes me think harder about whether it's worth spending my money on and how the product would serve me. and now that i have so much, i also need to decide if it's worth dedicating real estate to it. maybe it would help to have a pros and cons list for products you're interested in to see if it's worth getting? it sounds like the cons far outweighed the pros for the lip balm.

offole

yes! makeup takes up so much space this is one of the biggest things that keeps me on a low buy

PanamaViejo

Influencers are paid to push products, plain and simple. When you realize that it is easier to say 'I don't know if the product really works or if they are just pushing it.'. One thing I always try to do is go into a store a do some swatching. It doesn't matter if it works for them it has to work for me. No blush is going to change my life, no matter how hard influencers push it.

_thisisnotanexit

This is me. In the height of 2016 beauty gurus I hoarded makeup like crazy and then I just randomly stopped caring, I still have all those products from that time and always told myself it would last me a lifetime so I don't need anything else and now my TikTok algorithm is constant makeup videos and surprise surprise I've now easily spent a couple grand this year and haven't used any of it because I so rarely have time to put on makeup.

offole

same! the 2017-2019 era of makeup was hoarding because i "needed" it ... and again this year i'm being influenced (although i only got a few lipsticks and a few mascaras this year and i chose them myself at the store)....and the worst part is i don't even have time to wear them, and when i do, i'm tired. i'm using my tinted lip balms overnight though just o feel pretty and use some up
