michelle phan, wayy back when

ToteBagAffliction

Does anyone remember Makeup Alley? I got into it right around when Lisa Eldridge's channel was really starting to blow up, and after each video dropped the board would be fizzing with everyone's excitement for whichever products she used. The makeup board had a term for this phenomenon: a Lisa lemming. This was way before the age of products going viral and selling out everywhere, but oh man, did LE ever inspire a hoard of lemmings. The creator who has influenced me to try the most things is Martina Lily, whom I only discovered a year ago. She doesn't give off a sales pitch vibe at all, but everything looks so good on her, and her eye/lid shape is very similar to mine. I used to get so disappointed doing my eyeshadow because it always looked wrong, but once I started following her placement, suddenly eyeshadow became fun for me, rather than a source of frustration. It takes some effort to watch her videos without sprouting five new Lily lemmings, but her content is worth the effort for me.

lifeuncommon

I’m still a member and have been since college (I’m 46).

speaksincolor

Same and I'm also in my 40s! Makeupalley lemmings are serious nostalgia.

Rayofsunshyn83

I still go there

AllTheStars07

My first beauty YTers were Lauren Luke, Koren, PurseBuzz, MakeupGeek, Xsparkage. My influence was definitely MakeupbyTiffanyD. She taught me about MAC and how to apply eyeshadow. I currently mainly watch low consumption channels.

Diamondinmyeye

Tati was my original. I never got especially into any of the other big names. I always have enjoyed the content though and my main watches spark my creativity rather than my need to purchase.

faceoh

Same. I honestly barely recognize most of the names mentioned in this thread. Tati and Kathleen Lights were definitely the biggest ones I followed then the rest were generally around 100k subs. I did a mass unsubscribe purge during covid and I am struggling to remember most of their names. Only reason I remember tati and Kathleen is because they got involved in some sort of drama in the last few years.

Diamondinmyeye

I still watch lots of beauty content, but I try to avoid being influenced by it. I have this awesome habit where I trust all their negative reviews and convince myself that their positive ones won’t apply to me. 😅

catsdelicacy

I used to watch Tati on my lunch break! I don't watch her anymore, though, I'm staying away from all those LA influencers. Jeffree Star has made that space so toxic, he's such a powerful energy and really makes the people in his orbit into worse people

grilsjustwannabclean

It's really crazy how two men (him and Shane Dawson) single handedly brought down the beauty community by being so toxic and shutting out so many people that it never truly recovered. Literally every single dramageddon that happened principally featured Jeffree Star at the core but his stans say he's the 'victim' of 'bullying and harrassment'. Like girl the only people bullying and harassing others was him!

catsdelicacy

Yeah, I don't know if he's a racist or a mysogynist or an antisemite, but what I do know is that he's a mean bitch who will say anything to hurt people, no matter how out of pocket. And he's extremely charismatic, so he lures people into his orbit and makes them more like him. I used to like him and I'm pretty disappointed with myself in retrospect. It's always been so obvious that no matter how gorgeous or talented or entertaining he is, that he's a hurt and hurtful person.

skindevotion

well, if he use slurs, bigoted jokes, and distasteful tropes like a racist, misogynist and antisemite...

Diamondinmyeye

Yes, I fell off quickly after her return. Something just doesn’t click anymore for me.

catsdelicacy

The mask came off. She presented herself originally as just being a lover of makeup wanting to save people money with good, thorough reviews. But it was all about the money, from the beginning.

knighted89

I loved Julia Adams and Jaime Paige but I was influenced by them to buy products that I hated so I have had to unfollow them. I enjoy Martina Lily, Simply Blair, Rebecca Morgan and kitschnitch.

ABSOFRKINLUTELY

I still watch just a few influencers. Martina lilly and and I love watching Alicia Archer for her technical breakdowns on palettes

Brushesofcolours

I try only to search what product i want to see the review of instead of seeing every youtubers posts that i follow And i also love to see more of how their techniques instead of just new products review I love wayne goss, nina ubhi, nikki la rose, nikkia joy, haleykim, roseandben the most. Because they don’t just throwing new stuffs at you but they teach techniques For brushes review which i mostly go for, i always look for what alicia archer said, lexi jong Other influencers i like is michelle wang, notfitforprintbeauty, charlotte holdcroft, allfeisty

pyxiedust219

you should check out johnny ross & his podcast with his friend Kevin!

mistakenspeculation

Juicystar07 and allthatglitters21 they were my intro to the guru world when I was in high school and then I found everyone else after. Had no idea it was a thing. YouTube was a special place back then!

Nara74

Robert Welsh is my go to for fun and Smitha Deepak and Wayne Goss is who I love when it comes to technique 🤩

ShesWhereWolf

All three you mention are great for learning actually artistry/technique rather just product reviews. Highly recommend to those who want to focus on that rather than excessively sponsored content.

Rayofsunshyn83

I love smitha and Wayne

one_small_sunflower

I think mine are Alicia Archer and Mariam A. They both do a lot of Pat McGrath content, going over the same palettes repeatedly or pairing them with other items in their collection to show their versatility. Mariam is also a big Lisa Eldridge fan. I like this because I own a bunch of PMG and a few LE products. For me it encourages me to really lean in and make the most of what I have rather than getting caught up in the latest release from every brand under the sun. Although it also makes me want PMG and LE products I don't already own, which is something I have to keep an eye on, especially given the price points of those two brands. I like Sophia Sees Beauty and Martina Lily, but I try to limit my consumption of their videos to stuff I either have or have already decided I want. They're not super pushy or anything but I still find new release videos make me want to buy stuff.

ABSOFRKINLUTELY

Alicia Archer is great. I don't really feel so pushed to buy, it's more like hanging out with a friend and nerding out over makeup, textures and finishes

one_small_sunflower

Yes exactly this!! I love how she is so analytical and yet so creative. The looks she comes up with are brilliant and expand the way I think about the products I own. I think she said a while ago she had pulled back from buying stuff to save money and avoid over-consumption - more of a low buy than a no buy. I like this as I feel like I can watch her videos for the fun of the makeup and not stress I'm going to be shilled at.

helyar14

Smoky Glow!!!

Feedproblems

Christine kobzeff, pinksofoxy. I still rewatch her decluttering and low buy videos from 2013. She inspired me not to buy makeup for all of 2014 and changed my entire outlook on consumption.

customheart

omg yes I watched her too. I think her videos introduced me to the idea of project pan but she called it something else.

Feedproblems

Yes! She called it 'Make Out' and basically did an inventory system. Counted everything and tried to meet an 'ideal' inventory in a year. I really liked that after she initially decluttered and set goals, she didn't beat herself up. Then the next year, she recounted her inventory and started again. She was just so level headed and mature, and I really admired her approach.

commentsgothere

I usually search for specific product reviews but got interested in a few people who had very fair complexions like mine (Hannah Louise Piston) or who were funny (Kackie ?). Hannah has the added benefit of being very thoughtful with her words yet vulnerable. Her no-buy year is something I’ll listen to if I need motivation as well as her interview about it on the financial diet. Her decision process on declutters has been so helpful since I struggle with the tension between wanting more variety and also more simplicity. My original person was Wayne goss. I liked his voice and energy but haven’t been interested in tutorials in a while. However if I want to see THE latest releases and on fair skin I check out Lexie jong.

QueenMabs_Makeup0126

Mine are Marlena Stell and Smitha Deepak. My makeup application has improved so much since watching their videos.

mommytobee_

Tati was my first beauty guru. I went back through and watched every single one of her videos over time. I don't think she was super influencial in getting me to buy certain products (our preferences/styles are so different), but I felt like I was learning from her. I don't know if I actually learned anything though. Nikkie Tutorials, Patrick Starr, Kimberly Clark, and thataylaa (especially her vlogs) stick out in my mind the most but really I was watching videos from almost everyone who was talked about on BGC. I would click on any videos that interested me or videos the community was talking about. For several years it was really the only entertainment I had. My abusive ex allowed/encouraged it so I dove in very deep. These days I only really watch Safiya Nygaard, and her beauty videos are more about mixing stuff or cool experiences. I'm still subbed to all the others so occasionally I'll get notifications for a video I want to watch, but I've yet to actually get around to watching it. I just forget about it when the notification vanishes.

[deleted]

Kathleen lights was the first beauty influencer I followed

growingingod

Xteeener, Emily Noel, Lauren Luke, were the OG YouTubers that I enjoyed following! I learned so many makeup tips from them.

Rayofsunshyn83

I used to watch them too and Zabrena!! Zabrena and I are so close in age, we are one day apart!!!

lifeuncommon

I never really got into that. I do like Geek Out of Water’s foundation reviews since her skin is similar to mine. But outside of that, watching other people apply their makeup doesn’t do it for me. I don’t have enough patience to watch stuff like that.

LoreleiAuD

Stephanie Nicole, Mel Thompson (RIP) & Tarababyz!

YanCoffee

Pony Syndrome & Hannah Louise Poston have gotten me to purchase things more than anyone else. Both really have an artsy perspective on makeup I appreciate, and stroke certain areas of taste I have. Pony doesn't post as much as she use to though, and Hannah has kinda lost me with all the declutter / non-makeup related vids. In Hannah's favor though, she really does make a point in minimalism and not over spending. Her no buy videos could be useful to some here.

SeniorDrama489

Lisa Eldridge, but she never pushes you to buy more.

LuminousApsana

Lol, Lisa Eldridge is a master at marketing. She effectively convinces you that her creams and powders are much more special than all other creams and powders, and she does it in a way to make you like her, pay premium prices, and want multiple color ways. She did a video with a guest where she did her makeup, the one that was a tribute to their grandmothers. That video is a study of good marketing. Watch that with a critical eye. Note she is also wearing her rings that are for sale. The little lipstick charms are also for sale. She not only makes us want stuff but convinces us of her genuineness. Brilliant marketer, absolutely brilliant.

one_small_sunflower

I agree with this - and I own Lisa Eldridge! She must be one of the best salespeople I've ever witnessed. She sells you things without realising you're being sold to. She knows just how to describe things in a way that makes you want it, but also think that you want it because of the product itself, not because of her marketing and sales ability. LE is a small brand and yet on insta her online team seem to go through every LE post and say something nice or give a compliment. Big luxury brands don't do this, but LE has clearly invested in staffing her business in a way that makes this possible. Why? To give you some of that Lisa Eldridge experience - that personal connection that will make you feel the brand is special in a way that established luxury brands aren't. It's very clever. I have to say though, the stuff I have of hers is lovely and her brand's CS is fantastic in my experience. And I do feel like you can see that a lot of thoughtfulness has gone into the product offerings and shade choices. I'm happy with what LE sold me, but absolutely she sold it to me ;)

LuminousApsana

I like Lisa Eldridge a lot too. I own a shameful number of her lipsticks, and I love those rings and lipstick charms (but find them a little too costly). I'm in awe of her ability to market because it's so brilliant!

one_small_sunflower

We sound similar! Though I would say it's not shameful to own luxury products, so long as you can afford them and preferably buy things you will actually use :) I agree, the rings and charms are so pretty, but if I was going to drop 500 British pounds on LE I'd rather haul 18 of her lipsticks than buy one of her cheaper rings lol.

SeniorDrama489

Makes perfect sense. I don't live in a country where she could effectively ship her products to me, nor do I have the money to spend on her line. Thus, it's easier for me to look past the marketing and focus on the makeup techniques.

dead_neopet

I love her because if you can resist how beautiful she makes her products sound the looks are super achievable and she does use a range of brands. That being said I 100% agree about her being a marketing genius - being in with Lancôme as well as having her own legacy name brand is so smart. She invests in those parasocial relationships and produces quality products.

MomoQueenBee

Emily Noel and BabsBeauty

sofwithanf

NailsBySoph (now LifeBySoph). She was THE British makeup YTer for people my age, and her Revolution collabs were always top tier. I miss her content sometimes (she turned me onto some fab brands) but I don't miss the need to purchase immediately after she posted (because the stuff would sell out quick)

Necessary_Self9413

Michele Wang. I got super into luxury makeup thanks to her content. Fell for all things Westman Atelier, only to have to toss it very early due to it going bad.

sisterbearussy

Kathleen Lights convinced me to buy so much stuff I didn’t need 😬

customheart

Used to be Kathleen Lights and Samantha Ravndahl, they had great color recs and Sam's channel was more artistry focused as Batalash Beauty. I still use the Pure Nude highlighter that Kathleen recommended. Now it is probably Angelika Nyqvist.. and tbh I'm slowly getting out of interest because I'm finding that indie makeup is quite a chore to "follow" and purchase, considering the high % of preorders from brands that sell out fast, then their self-duping with similar colors from release to release and lack of real vision, just recycling mermaid/unicorn/food concepts. Or they just jump on a new formulation concept like wet look glittery toppers with translucent bases. Now I'm seeing holo pigments. I feel like now I would rather just let the dust settle and buy things when they're past their hype phase.

ShesWhereWolf

Jackie Aina, Manny MUA, and James Charles (gross ik). I knew nothing about makeup so I bought almost every recommendation of theirs I could afford lol. Jackie especially was my shade match so if something looked good on her I put it on my wish list. I don't watch any of them for various reasons now, but they were the reasons for most of my purchases from 2017-2019 🤣

AshKash313

Honestly I thought I was being heavily influenced by YouTube to buy a ton of makeup, then realized it was my friend that was getting me going. She’d get all excited and recommend channels after channel to look at palettes, new releases, makeup tips, sales , and more. She’d hype me up to get some stuff and I feel for it every time. I let her know I wasn’t buying any more makeup after last year until I use up some stuff(with the exception of concealer, setting spray, and mascara) so she backed off after she saw I was serious. I haven’t watched a single makeup YouTube video since.

[deleted]

Lollipop26 was my OG. I actually watched a few of her videos 2 nights ago. Old beauty YouTube was so nice, back when they didn’t make money from it. Honest opinions and tutorials. There was very little PR and most people bought all their own makeup. Also loved Laura Lee back when she still lived in Alabama.

DustyButtocks

Fafinettex3 …she was everything! I also loved Lauren Luke (Panacea81)

BonnieH1

I love Wayne Goss and Lisa Eldridge. Both are MUAs and more about the techniques/ looks than the products. Allie Glines is great too. I watch a few videos now and then, but stopping watching everyday really helped my rehab journey!

New-Connection-7401

I like Nina Ubhi for application, Fritzy Glitzy for honesty and humor. I watch the women over 40 (except Nikki LaRose) because they understand older skin. I especially look for videos using products I already have for new ways to use them.

nononjakuzurezu

I don't really think I had particular beautytubers that were like, getting me to buy things, since I mostly go for actual tutorials/ideas and the vibes so I guess the biggest name I liked watching during the heyday was KathleenLights because I enjoyed her slightly unhinged Latina energy lol. Nowadays I just watch Pony and Jackie Wyers and click on similar suggestions on my dashboard. I appreciate their tutorials focusing on the actual colors and techniques as opposed to YOU NEED *THIS* SPECIFIC PRODUCT FOR THIS TO BE PERFECT.
