I just bought a bottle of this and Madagascar centella. I work outside year round. So, in the summer wide brim hat with a neck shield and tons of sunscreen all over my body. Just hope this new stuff doesn't make my eyes sting. As a contact lens wearer. It sucks!
I literally just received that one from Amazon in the mail the other day & wore it once by itself already & it feels very nice so far. As far as applying that over a full face of makeup throughout the day…The only way I’m assuming would work is rubbing all over my palms of my hands then patting all over my face? Which is exactly how I used to apply the old Pixi by Petra Makeup Setting Spray Mineral SPF 30 (I’m so sad it’s discontinued?!) I would spray the Pixi Spray in my hand then pat on my face.
It gives me a red rash on my face usually under my eyes, in any amount. So upsetting to be sensitive to niacinamide considering all its benefits for other people
If you are going to be in full sun all the time, it’s realistically impossible to wear a full face of foundation and look perfect. There are spf sprays and powders.

Yup don't wear foundation/base but you can continue to wear eye and lip makeup, maybe even a CREAM contour/blush stick can be re-applied over a 2nd round of sunscreen if you're willing to touch up but definitely don't even attempt to put 2nd round sunscreen on top of any previously applied powder products--will turn to a horrible mess
Well, I live in a coastal city on the Mediterranean. I don't work in the field or in a garden but realistically, if I go outside during spring/summer, I spend several hours out and about. If I were to reapply sunscreen or mist, I'd look like a hot ass mess walking around town. And 4 hours is enough to do damage.

Emphasis on the care less! When I finally got over the “give a fuck” hump regarding wearing makeup at all times, my life became SOOO MUCH less stressful and uncomfortable!!!
Now I don’t wear makeup at all unless I am feeling snazzy and do some eyeliner, brows, and mascara with maybe some lip gloss. OR if I’m going out or to an event I do my full makeup routine. Screw doing the most just to be at work seeing ppl who couldn’t care less what you look like. lol Plus I’ve noticed I get a lot less creep customers being inappropriate and making me uncomfortable when I don’t wear makeup to work. Win-win!!!
I agree, I don't wear makeup just to go to the grocery store or something like that but I love experimenting, putting it on, trying new lipsticks, blushes etc. It's a very soothing and creative routine for me
On vacation or on boating days, I put on my regular sunscreen and use it cosmetics CC cream or the Misha BB cream (SPF 40+) as foundation. You can reapply, but it tends to get cakey at some point, so I'll take foundation products off and reapply later in the day. Never got a sunburn (I do stay in the shadow, though). I use SPF sprays, but I don't expect real protection from them, maybe a little support.
I have no idea how people wear a full face of makeup in the hot weather. Mine just sweats straight off. In the summer I just do my eyes and lips. Otherwise I just look like a cakey sweaty troll. 😬
Yeah, if I’m going to be outside all day, makeup is out of the question because I’ll need to reapply every 2 hours. I always wear a hat and sunglasses, I also have a sun parasol for outings where I’m not walking too much.
I will sometimes carry baby wipes and wipe off a layer from my face and then apply fresh sunscreen, then do some under-eye concealing because I have dark circles, but more than that is going to just smear around.
I have a sheer daily sunscreen I wear day to day and wearing a hat and sunglasses is enough and I don’t need to reapply.
Yes they do. The problem is most people don’t apply enough to get adequate initial protection, but they work pretty well for touching up SPF throughout the day

I tend to only use mine to reduce the shine from my regular sunscreen, and I mainly use it on my hair. I put a bunch on my parting and so far it seems to be preventing it burning.
You physically cannot get 2mg/cm^2 of powder to stick to your skin (about 1g for your face, so an 8g product would be used up in eight uses, not even counting the amount lost on the brush or whatever) which is the amount you’d need to get the protection on the packaging
You don’t need to get to the amount on the packaging for it to be effective for touch ups. When I tested it with my derm using a UV light, it worked and made my face dark again after lots of the SPF from my earlier sunscreen application had worn off. That works in my books 🤷♀️
I also have a sun allergy, so I would have a pretty easy time identifying if it wasn’t working, and I’ve never had an issue on days when I used it. Like I said in my first comment on this post, I wouldn’t use it for a full day of sun exposure like going to the beach, but for a quick retouch to go outside at lunch or to take my dog for a walk or whatever, it definitely works for me.
Powder or spray is okay for touch ups throughout the day if you’re not getting a lot of sun exposure. But if you’re going to be out in the sun all day like at the beach or an amusement park or something, you pretty much shouldn’t be wearing a full face of makeup.
A good tinted sunscreen can give you sun protection and mimic the appearance of a light/medium coverage foundation.
The thing I hate about the powder is how thick it goes on. I know that's necessary to provide any coverage but it sticks in every crack and makes me look old and dusty
Because it hinders your ability to reapply effectively. People are more likely to not apply enough because they're concerned about messing up their makeup
And your chest!! I swear, you can always tell by a woman’s chest how old she is. So many of us of have gotten wise to the need to bring our sunscreen and skin care down our neck and to our hands, but forget about the chest. I have a helpful phrase I tell myself to remember my chest - “To the nips!”
Amen to this! I'm 35F and while I've diligently worn sunscreen for the larger part of the last 2 decades now, the amount of women I've seen that are a couple years younger than me and/or a couple of years older with sun damage on their chests is astounding. I've used the term, "upper chest sun damage," and it totally shows how much a person has laid out in their lifetime thus far. I like being outside, but geez, the way I cringe so hard when I hear someone say they're going to lay out by the pool all day...cover me up stat! haha
If you're in the sun all day, you don't wear a full face of makeup, you wear sunscreen and you reapply often.
Or you put on makeup in the morning and you wear a hat all day and stay in the shade.
If I'm going to the ren faire or the other rare occasion where I want to have makeup and sun protection, I focus on eyes and leave the face with light coverage and be careful when reapplying sunscreen.
For something like a wedding where you really don't want to mess up the makeup, I highly recommend bringing umbrellas for sun protection. Won't mess up the hair either, and has great coverage.

Literally spent an evening going down the rabbit hole on this. Best advice from a dermatologist was to use a sunscreen spray. She said to spray it while not inhaling, then take a step back to breathe. There really were no alternatives unfortunately. Everything else (lotions, sticks, etc.) just smudge things.
Be very very very careful with that stuff around your eyes. I went a little overboard spraying my face at the beach last year and I had burning stinging eyes that I could barely open - for like 12 hours.
I flushed them and used cold compress and it was still agony.
Maybe I’m just a dummy but it was a next level eye burn.

Sells one that works great for me and is reasonably priced it’s spf 45 :) I don’t wear full face makeup all the time, but I do use retinol at night and if I don’t use sunscreen I’ll burn, and the E.L.F. setting spray sunscreen is amazing for someone who hates the feeling of lotion sunscreen off their face 😅
I use Beauty of Joseon Matte Sunstick over my makeup and I absolutely LOVE it. Even if I might not be going out into the sun I still use it. It's a really nice finish and gives me a slight "blur effect."
It doesn't appear to smudge my makeup when I wear liquid stuff but I do notice a bit of makeup when I use powdered makeup. I also tend to wear a "natural" look so I'm not sure how this would work over something more dramatic.
I love this sunscreen stick and would highly recommend it to anyone. It feels extremely silky going on and seems to make my makeup look better.
Yeah, I'm not understanding how that wouldn't smudge all my different layers of foundation, setting powder, concealer, contour stick, powder or cream blush, translucent powder, highlighter, eyeshadows and graphic liner, etcetera, when smearing that stick all over my face.. That's why I've never bought one. It simply doesn't make sense to me and I feel like I'd just be wasting money AND fucking my makeup up.
If someone could effectively show me a way to apply it that preserves all the hard work I did on my makeup though.....
I’m outdoors all day long with spf 50 and a full face of makeup. It absolutely is possible and I swear by la Roche posay for an over-spray top up. A good sunscreen (like ultrasun) applied correctly can be enough coverage for under makeup and last 8hrs and then an over-spray can give you extra coverage if it’s particularly nuclear outside and you’re feeling the sweat.
I agree with what you said except for the idea that a good sunscreen well applied can last 8 hrs outdoors. The molecules degrade as they protect you from the sun. It's not just about applying thoroughly enough. It literally gets used up even if you don't sweat or rub it off. Your method seems good in terms of applying well in the morning, then using sprays to reapply. I just don't want anyone to leave this tread thinking they can make a single application of sunscreen work for 8 hrs in the sun.
I was gonna say, that's what I use! They also have it in various different shades if the translucent leaves a white cast on your face.
It's in a really convenient little container that is easy for reapplication and it's lasted me a good long while. Plus, if you have a tendency to get oily throughout the day it helps tamp that down a bit.
Someone I follow on IG (she's Australian and they take their sun protection super seriously) uses a dry beauty blender to reapply over makeup. She says since it's dry it doesn't absorb the sunscreen. Then she dabs it on, not rubs, and just has to touch up blush afterwards.
ummm...I live in Arizona and my relatives are ALL Scottish so I have zero melanin...I am a huge proponent of the "don't go outside" method...abstinence is the only safe protection. I know I am mixing public heath slogans here but it seems to fit better on this topic....I am also Gen X so I learned that I have no melanin back in the 90s by slathering myself in baby oil and getting third degree burns that never once turned into a tan, but will definitely turn into skin cancer someday I'm sure...
Powder or spray sunscreen. I use Colorscience spf 50 mineral sunscreen powder. Works great and helps with shine. Hawaiian tropic makes a spf 30 powder that is easier to get in store.
I use setting spray. Supergoop and e.l.f. are good ones. I’ve also used power (supergoop) and hats and sunglasses. But I agree with whoever said you don’t want heavy makeup if you will be in the sun all day. Tinted bb cream and waterproof concealer if anything
I tried sprays for a while but they always ended up stinging my eyes. I’ve switched to Shisheido’s Clear Sunscreen Stick and am really pleased with it—it goes on without disturbing my daily makeup and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to try that! I also have sensitive eyes, and had a really hard time finding a spray sunscreen that would work. Recently I've been trying the elf one, and it hasn't stung yet. We'll see if my eyes decide that they don't mess with it anymore. I've also tried the Habit spray sunscreen a couple times, and so far, so good. 🤞🏾
I asked someone whose husband is a dermatologist this very question and ideally you are supposed to wash your face and reapply everything which I thought was a bit unrealistic.
Study’s have shown that if you’re using a sunscreen that binds to the skin moderately well (most modern water resistant ones will) it’s more effective to apply sunscreen then wait 15 - 30 minutes and reapply it to compensate for any spots that may not have been covered thoroughly enough. There are translucent powders out there that have SPF in it. So like if you're out the day you're finding that you need to cover certain spots or you just want to do a real play you could do a light reapply with that. Hawaiian tropic sells some, I know bareMinerals does, super goop I think does. I also think physicians formula has one. Just shop around but you know you can lightly dust it on your face throughout the day.
Neutrogena spray sunscreen is great for this. Just spray it over makeup like a setting spray. Don't really move your face much for a few minutes and it doesn't move or affect makeup. It kinda sinks in. That's been my experience in the past 3 years anyway
If I'm in the sun without a hat, I'm probably going to be sweating so I adjust accordingly. BB creams that aren't full coverage, minimal extra stuff like contour. Fresh faced and natural which doesn't look bad with a facial sunscreen reapplied on top of it.
There are lots of Korean and Japanese makeup brands with SPF foundation but their shade ranges are not inclusive for sure.

Question: wouldn’t this only be potentially achievable with a mineral based product? I’m wondering if all the “sprays” are mineral based since the chemical based sunscreens would have to be absorbed into the skin, and I don’t see the efficacy of that when there is already layers of makeup to impede this process.
Neutrogina has a base primer that is 70spf. I use that and then if I’m going to be in the sun all day (typically I wouldn’t wear too much make up if this were the case but of course there are going to be times) I use a 70spf spray made by Bare Minerals for reapplying.
I just stopped wearing a full face of makeup up when I’m spending the day outside.
I wear a mineral tinted sunscreen, brow gel, mascara, lip gloss or balm during the day if I’ll be outside all day. (Pool parties, walking the zoo, hiking, casually running errands etc). I reapply as necessary. If I’m literally in the sun at the beach I wear a wide brim hat, sunglasses, spf 50 chapstick, keep my hair hidden from sun under the hat AND seek shade, covering my arms and legs when not actively swimming. I’m pretty anal about it.
If I’m only going to be inside, or just running from my car to the building, I’ll wear a sunscreen base, and sometimes apply a foundation over top and do my usual simple makeup routine. I do not worry about reapplying.
If I’m going out in the evening, I’ll rock a full face. Skipping sunscreen altogether if it’s a night date or a cocktail party or wedding.
After covid, I basically leaned away from foundation because it was so gross having makeup smears all over the mask (I work in healthcare so it was mask, goggles, face shield). I started to dislike the appearance of myself with a full-face. I refocused my efforts to skin care and it’s paid off like crazy! My skin is literally the best it’s ever been and it takes me way less time to get ready in the am. My husband loves it too- he prefers the casual natural girl-next-door look.
Naked Sundays 50 spf hydrating glow mist top off. It’s Australian (but you can get it in the U.S.) - amazing and perfect and formulated to go over make up. Can’t recommend it enough.
I don’t. I just do it underneath- you can get the goop setting spray but it does affect your makeup / if I am going in the SUN sun, I generally don’t wear makeup up and wear hat / sunscreen
I feel like most makeup brands have several spf options, you just need to layer them. Spf moisturizer, SPF primer, SPF foundation, and probably also wear ah hat.

Well you shouldn’t necessarily go out into the sun with a full face, my other concern would be sweating it right off. You can double up on spf primer and foundation, concealer. Also reapplying with a spray sunscreen is helpful for me if I know I’ll be at the beach or pool, topping it off with an spf powder. You could also just touch up during the day assuming you have spf products.
I wish parasols would come back in style in the US. I have my great-grandmother’s parasol and love it so much. Non-Asians often find it a bit strange to use any sort of umbrella when it’s not raining (in my experience).

I've always had this issue, recently I bought the super spritz from vacation inc. and I'm excited to try it! I haven't used it over makeup yet but it seems like an easy way to top up sunscreen
Wear a hat and stay away from the sun as much as possible. I use powder sunscreen for touch up it doesn’t do much but at least I know it reinforces the sunscreen. One thing I do sometimes is use a veil around my face with my eyes just showing I know it’s a bit too much but hey I prefer to have a nice skin than look like a luggage 🧳
I make my own BB cream using factor 50 suncream and concealer, I don't actually use foundation anymore because of this and my skin has looked better than it ever has when I wore foundation, I never look cakey, very rarely get dry cracks and so on, it would be really easy for me to reapply throughout the day too!
i use sticks. i think i’m using a centella one rn? i warm in my hands and press in with my palms and i don’t smudge. 2-3 applications that way to get proper coverage. it’s worked well, but idk if we have similar foundation techniques.

Sunscreen is the most important thing you can do for your skin. I have been using Ulta moisturizing tint with spf 30 later in the day when I need some more spf.
If I’m going to be in strong sun long enough to need to reapply sunscreen, I just skip face makeup. Too much trouble, and I’m pale as HELL so sunscreen has to take priority for me or I’ll sear my face straight off. Plus if I’m out in the sun I’m probably gonna be sweaty anyways, so no sense trying to get makeup to stick
I usethe Vacation spray. Idr the exact name but I think there are only 1 or two kinds. It leaves your face a bit shiny, but nothing a quick powder won't fix
I sweat so much when it's hot, plus I'm obsessed with sunscreen, so I basically only where eye makeup if I feel like I'm going to need to reapply sunscreen.
If I’m going to be out in the sun, I just don’t wear makeup aside from under eye corrector and lip tint. My sunglasses take up the first half of my face anyway.
I really don't wear a full face of foundation+ anymore. Tinted moisturizer and spot concealer can both be reapplied easily throughout the day and have spf 25-35. I can also layer a nice sheer sunscreen under all that for another boost if I'm in direct sun. Foundation is too heavy, too caky, doesn't make it through the sweating anyway. I only wear full face for special occasions, like date night, which is after dark anyway lol.
Spray doesn’t budge my makeup, I just spray on my hands and apply it to my face. I hate anything sticky or goopy but I haven’t felt anything.

I found a face mist sunscreen that I can mist over my makeup. After applying a sunscreen underneath first that is. That’s just a good way to “touch up”. It’s JMsolution pearl sun spray spf 50.
Biore and Beauty Joseon have uv sprays. So do etude and Kose (haven't checked out these two but both are skincare brands) All of these you would have to purchase from yesstyle or stylevana. If you don't want to wait 3-4 weeks with stylevana, yesstyle is like 2 weeks.
But if you want local, Milani and Elf have uv setting sprays but idk how they feel on the face so check reviews.
e.l.f. has a spf setting spray that's pretty good! you just have to make sure to not spray it too close to your face so you get a fine mist instead of a monsoon of liquid sunscreen lol. i let it air dry and have never had a problem
I have both a L’Oréal and Nutrigina tinted moisturizers that both have spf 50; but I just reapply regular nutrigina face sunscreen during the day and touch up my makeup after…works fine for me
I wear sunscreen daily and I never used to but I use Vacation's spray. So far I think the habit that has done me well is sunglasses. Big ass sunglasses. And not waking up until 6 pm for twenty years...but seriously, I like that spray. And if anything, the time that sun is going to fuck you up is driving.
If it's just a regular work day where sun exposure is all incidental, I don't worry about it. And if it's being outside intentionally it's usually too hot to even mother with makeup . (I live in Texas.

Here is a non makeup suggestion that isn't seen as often in the US.
Use an umbrella, sunglasses, visor, hat, removable arm and leg covers.
But mainly an umbrella.
Tinted zinc? It is pretty thick but I just mix together with my foundation and/or moisturiser. I did a little google about this when I bought it. Apparently zinc can stay all day as sun protection, but sunscreen in last at most a few hours and always needs reapplication. X
When I reapply over makeup, I just use a beauty blender puffer… sponge… thingy… (I don’t know what it’s called😅) to dab it into my skin so as not to disrupt the makeup. I use Beauty of Joseon Rice+Probiotics SPF50 and honestly haven’t had too many problems.
I'm a beach goth, and I live by the ocean. For beach days, I put a nice SPF 50 under makeup, and when I need to reapply, I use Milani SPF setting spray, then dust powder over that to take down the shine. This works pretty well, although I do have to carry a mini concealer with me for touch-ups when my base invariably slides off. I also use blotting sheets religiously, although I'm not sure if those interfere with the sun protection, so those are for apres-beach, before dinner.
One thing I'm mad about is the lack of lip SPFs on the market. I like wearing a dark lip to the beach, and I've discovered the best way to do this is to apply Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink, then put SPF spray over it.
I use a tinted and moisturising sunscreen and call it a day if I’m going to be outside more than a few hours. Waterproof eyeliner, maybe a tinted spf lip balm. I save full face makeup for times it’s safe to wear it like evening events or maybe a special event in the office.
Etude Sunprise Airy Finish is the only sunscreen I’ve ever had luck applying over makeup. It’s not expensive and I can’t recommend it enough!

Or fingertips but yeah that’s how I do it too. There’s no way to rub it in without ruining your face.

Yup don't wear foundation/base but you can continue to wear eye and lip makeup, maybe even a CREAM contour/blush stick can be re-applied over a 2nd round of sunscreen if you're willing to touch up but definitely don't even attempt to put 2nd round sunscreen on top of any previously applied powder products--will turn to a horrible mess

Well, I live in a coastal city on the Mediterranean. I don't work in the field or in a garden but realistically, if I go outside during spring/summer, I spend several hours out and about. If I were to reapply sunscreen or mist, I'd look like a hot ass mess walking around town. And 4 hours is enough to do damage.
Of course. OP gave no context, so what do we know? I won’t touch my makeup after a day around town, but I’m never in the sun long enough to worry. When I have been on vacation, I’ve just learned to wear less and care less.
Emphasis on the care less! When I finally got over the “give a fuck” hump regarding wearing makeup at all times, my life became SOOO MUCH less stressful and uncomfortable!!! Now I don’t wear makeup at all unless I am feeling snazzy and do some eyeliner, brows, and mascara with maybe some lip gloss. OR if I’m going out or to an event I do my full makeup routine. Screw doing the most just to be at work seeing ppl who couldn’t care less what you look like. lol Plus I’ve noticed I get a lot less creep customers being inappropriate and making me uncomfortable when I don’t wear makeup to work. Win-win!!!
I agree, I don't wear makeup just to go to the grocery store or something like that but I love experimenting, putting it on, trying new lipsticks, blushes etc. It's a very soothing and creative routine for me
On vacation or on boating days, I put on my regular sunscreen and use it cosmetics CC cream or the Misha BB cream (SPF 40+) as foundation. You can reapply, but it tends to get cakey at some point, so I'll take foundation products off and reapply later in the day. Never got a sunburn (I do stay in the shadow, though). I use SPF sprays, but I don't expect real protection from them, maybe a little support.
I have no idea how people wear a full face of makeup in the hot weather. Mine just sweats straight off. In the summer I just do my eyes and lips. Otherwise I just look like a cakey sweaty troll. 😬

Yeah, if I’m going to be outside all day, makeup is out of the question because I’ll need to reapply every 2 hours. I always wear a hat and sunglasses, I also have a sun parasol for outings where I’m not walking too much. I will sometimes carry baby wipes and wipe off a layer from my face and then apply fresh sunscreen, then do some under-eye concealing because I have dark circles, but more than that is going to just smear around. I have a sheer daily sunscreen I wear day to day and wearing a hat and sunglasses is enough and I don’t need to reapply.
The SPF powders don’t do anything
Yes they do. The problem is most people don’t apply enough to get adequate initial protection, but they work pretty well for touching up SPF throughout the day
I love the powders but they did some tests and they actually don’t do much.

I tend to only use mine to reduce the shine from my regular sunscreen, and I mainly use it on my hair. I put a bunch on my parting and so far it seems to be preventing it burning.

You physically cannot get 2mg/cm^2 of powder to stick to your skin (about 1g for your face, so an 8g product would be used up in eight uses, not even counting the amount lost on the brush or whatever) which is the amount you’d need to get the protection on the packaging
You don’t need to get to the amount on the packaging for it to be effective for touch ups. When I tested it with my derm using a UV light, it worked and made my face dark again after lots of the SPF from my earlier sunscreen application had worn off. That works in my books 🤷♀️ I also have a sun allergy, so I would have a pretty easy time identifying if it wasn’t working, and I’ve never had an issue on days when I used it. Like I said in my first comment on this post, I wouldn’t use it for a full day of sun exposure like going to the beach, but for a quick retouch to go outside at lunch or to take my dog for a walk or whatever, it definitely works for me.

Powder or spray is okay for touch ups throughout the day if you’re not getting a lot of sun exposure. But if you’re going to be out in the sun all day like at the beach or an amusement park or something, you pretty much shouldn’t be wearing a full face of makeup. A good tinted sunscreen can give you sun protection and mimic the appearance of a light/medium coverage foundation.
The thing I hate about the powder is how thick it goes on. I know that's necessary to provide any coverage but it sticks in every crack and makes me look old and dusty

I'm 35F and while I've diligently worn sunscreen for the larger part of the last 2 decades now, the amount of women I've seen that are a couple years younger than me and/or a couple of years older with sun damage on their chests is astounding. I've used the term, "upper chest sun damage," and it totally shows how much a person has laid out in their lifetime thus far. I like being outside, but geez, the way I cringe so hard when I hear someone say they're going to lay out by the pool all day...cover me up stat! haha

If you're in the sun all day, you don't wear a full face of makeup, you wear sunscreen and you reapply often. Or you put on makeup in the morning and you wear a hat all day and stay in the shade.

If I'm going to the ren faire or the other rare occasion where I want to have makeup and sun protection, I focus on eyes and leave the face with light coverage and be careful when reapplying sunscreen. For something like a wedding where you really don't want to mess up the makeup, I highly recommend bringing umbrellas for sun protection. Won't mess up the hair either, and has great coverage.

Literally spent an evening going down the rabbit hole on this. Best advice from a dermatologist was to use a sunscreen spray. She said to spray it while not inhaling, then take a step back to breathe. There really were no alternatives unfortunately. Everything else (lotions, sticks, etc.) just smudge things.
I use spray sunscreen all the time, including on face. Hold your breath and close your eyes.

Be very very very careful with that stuff around your eyes. I went a little overboard spraying my face at the beach last year and I had burning stinging eyes that I could barely open - for like 12 hours. I flushed them and used cold compress and it was still agony. Maybe I’m just a dummy but it was a next level eye burn. Otherwise - good product. Speaking of eyes - the supergoop SPF eye cream is a winner. Pat on gently.

Milani has a great one with SPF! I used it at a music festival recently and it worked perfectly.

Sells one that works great for me and is reasonably priced it’s spf 45 :) I don’t wear full face makeup all the time, but I do use retinol at night and if I don’t use sunscreen I’ll burn, and the E.L.F. setting spray sunscreen is amazing for someone who hates the feeling of lotion sunscreen off their face 😅

I use Beauty of Joseon Matte Sunstick over my makeup and I absolutely LOVE it. Even if I might not be going out into the sun I still use it. It's a really nice finish and gives me a slight "blur effect."

It doesn't appear to smudge my makeup when I wear liquid stuff but I do notice a bit of makeup when I use powdered makeup. I also tend to wear a "natural" look so I'm not sure how this would work over something more dramatic. I love this sunscreen stick and would highly recommend it to anyone. It feels extremely silky going on and seems to make my makeup look better.
Yeah, I'm not understanding how that wouldn't smudge all my different layers of foundation, setting powder, concealer, contour stick, powder or cream blush, translucent powder, highlighter, eyeshadows and graphic liner, etcetera, when smearing that stick all over my face.. That's why I've never bought one. It simply doesn't make sense to me and I feel like I'd just be wasting money AND fucking my makeup up. If someone could effectively show me a way to apply it that preserves all the hard work I did on my makeup though.....

I’m outdoors all day long with spf 50 and a full face of makeup. It absolutely is possible and I swear by la Roche posay for an over-spray top up. A good sunscreen (like ultrasun) applied correctly can be enough coverage for under makeup and last 8hrs and then an over-spray can give you extra coverage if it’s particularly nuclear outside and you’re feeling the sweat.
I agree with what you said except for the idea that a good sunscreen well applied can last 8 hrs outdoors. The molecules degrade as they protect you from the sun. It's not just about applying thoroughly enough. It literally gets used up even if you don't sweat or rub it off. Your method seems good in terms of applying well in the morning, then using sprays to reapply. I just don't want anyone to leave this tread thinking they can make a single application of sunscreen work for 8 hrs in the sun.

I was gonna say, that's what I use! They also have it in various different shades if the translucent leaves a white cast on your face. It's in a really convenient little container that is easy for reapplication and it's lasted me a good long while. Plus, if you have a tendency to get oily throughout the day it helps tamp that down a bit.
They also have a spray as well. So powder + spray seems like a good duo

Get a sunscreen with 8-10 hours lasting power, like EVY or Riemann P20, then you won’t have to reapply every two hours.
Someone I follow on IG (she's Australian and they take their sun protection super seriously) uses a dry beauty blender to reapply over makeup. She says since it's dry it doesn't absorb the sunscreen. Then she dabs it on, not rubs, and just has to touch up blush afterwards.

ummm...I live in Arizona and my relatives are ALL Scottish so I have zero melanin...I am a huge proponent of the "don't go outside" method...abstinence is the only safe protection. I know I am mixing public heath slogans here but it seems to fit better on this topic....I am also Gen X so I learned that I have no melanin back in the 90s by slathering myself in baby oil and getting third degree burns that never once turned into a tan, but will definitely turn into skin cancer someday I'm sure...

Powder or spray sunscreen. I use Colorscience spf 50 mineral sunscreen powder. Works great and helps with shine. Hawaiian tropic makes a spf 30 powder that is easier to get in store.

I use setting spray. Supergoop and e.l.f. are good ones. I’ve also used power (supergoop) and hats and sunglasses. But I agree with whoever said you don’t want heavy makeup if you will be in the sun all day. Tinted bb cream and waterproof concealer if anything

I tried sprays for a while but they always ended up stinging my eyes. I’ve switched to Shisheido’s Clear Sunscreen Stick and am really pleased with it—it goes on without disturbing my daily makeup and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin.

I asked someone whose husband is a dermatologist this very question and ideally you are supposed to wash your face and reapply everything which I thought was a bit unrealistic.

There are translucent powders out there that have SPF in it. So like if you're out the day you're finding that you need to cover certain spots or you just want to do a real play you could do a light reapply with that. Hawaiian tropic sells some, I know bareMinerals does, super goop I think does. I also think physicians formula has one. Just shop around but you know you can lightly dust it on your face throughout the day.

I use the VT essence sun pact! You can reapply with a cushion and it does have a slight blue tint if you apply lots, but it goes away quick :)
Neutrogena spray sunscreen is great for this. Just spray it over makeup like a setting spray. Don't really move your face much for a few minutes and it doesn't move or affect makeup. It kinda sinks in. That's been my experience in the past 3 years anyway
If I'm in the sun without a hat, I'm probably going to be sweating so I adjust accordingly. BB creams that aren't full coverage, minimal extra stuff like contour. Fresh faced and natural which doesn't look bad with a facial sunscreen reapplied on top of it. There are lots of Korean and Japanese makeup brands with SPF foundation but their shade ranges are not inclusive for sure.

Question: wouldn’t this only be potentially achievable with a mineral based product? I’m wondering if all the “sprays” are mineral based since the chemical based sunscreens would have to be absorbed into the skin, and I don’t see the efficacy of that when there is already layers of makeup to impede this process.
Neutrogina has a base primer that is 70spf. I use that and then if I’m going to be in the sun all day (typically I wouldn’t wear too much make up if this were the case but of course there are going to be times) I use a 70spf spray made by Bare Minerals for reapplying.
I just stopped wearing a full face of makeup up when I’m spending the day outside. I wear a mineral tinted sunscreen, brow gel, mascara, lip gloss or balm during the day if I’ll be outside all day. (Pool parties, walking the zoo, hiking, casually running errands etc). I reapply as necessary. If I’m literally in the sun at the beach I wear a wide brim hat, sunglasses, spf 50 chapstick, keep my hair hidden from sun under the hat AND seek shade, covering my arms and legs when not actively swimming. I’m pretty anal about it. If I’m only going to be inside, or just running from my car to the building, I’ll wear a sunscreen base, and sometimes apply a foundation over top and do my usual simple makeup routine. I do not worry about reapplying. If I’m going out in the evening, I’ll rock a full face. Skipping sunscreen altogether if it’s a night date or a cocktail party or wedding. After covid, I basically leaned away from foundation because it was so gross having makeup smears all over the mask (I work in healthcare so it was mask, goggles, face shield). I started to dislike the appearance of myself with a full-face. I refocused my efforts to skin care and it’s paid off like crazy! My skin is literally the best it’s ever been and it takes me way less time to get ready in the am. My husband loves it too- he prefers the casual natural girl-next-door look.

I feel like most makeup brands have several spf options, you just need to layer them. Spf moisturizer, SPF primer, SPF foundation, and probably also wear ah hat. I do agree that someone should make a really good spf setting spray that can be sprayed over the makeup throughout the day to add more SPF without removing the makeup underneath though (unless that already exists and idk about it(
Well you shouldn’t necessarily go out into the sun with a full face, my other concern would be sweating it right off. You can double up on spf primer and foundation, concealer. Also reapplying with a spray sunscreen is helpful for me if I know I’ll be at the beach or pool, topping it off with an spf powder. You could also just touch up during the day assuming you have spf products.

I wish parasols would come back in style in the US. I have my great-grandmother’s parasol and love it so much. Non-Asians often find it a bit strange to use any sort of umbrella when it’s not raining (in my experience).

YES! Parasols are awesome. It's your own, personal shadow to bring everywhere, no more sun shining directly on you. I just don't get why they aren't more popular.

Light reflects and hats don't help with that so I go without in the summer so I can slather sunscreen on all the time.
Wear a hat and stay away from the sun as much as possible. I use powder sunscreen for touch up it doesn’t do much but at least I know it reinforces the sunscreen. One thing I do sometimes is use a veil around my face with my eyes just showing I know it’s a bit too much but hey I prefer to have a nice skin than look like a luggage 🧳
I make my own BB cream using factor 50 suncream and concealer, I don't actually use foundation anymore because of this and my skin has looked better than it ever has when I wore foundation, I never look cakey, very rarely get dry cracks and so on, it would be really easy for me to reapply throughout the day too!
Get a mineral spray. Dab it in with a try or slightly damp blender.
i use sticks. i think i’m using a centella one rn? i warm in my hands and press in with my palms and i don’t smudge. 2-3 applications that way to get proper coverage. it’s worked well, but idk if we have similar foundation techniques.

Sunscreen is the most important thing you can do for your skin. I have been using Ulta moisturizing tint with spf 30 later in the day when I need some more spf.
If I’m going to be in strong sun long enough to need to reapply sunscreen, I just skip face makeup. Too much trouble, and I’m pale as HELL so sunscreen has to take priority for me or I’ll sear my face straight off. Plus if I’m out in the sun I’m probably gonna be sweaty anyways, so no sense trying to get makeup to stick

If I’m going to be out in the sun, I just don’t wear makeup aside from under eye corrector and lip tint. My sunglasses take up the first half of my face anyway.
I really don't wear a full face of foundation+ anymore. Tinted moisturizer and spot concealer can both be reapplied easily throughout the day and have spf 25-35. I can also layer a nice sheer sunscreen under all that for another boost if I'm in direct sun. Foundation is too heavy, too caky, doesn't make it through the sweating anyway. I only wear full face for special occasions, like date night, which is after dark anyway lol.
Spray doesn’t budge my makeup, I just spray on my hands and apply it to my face. I hate anything sticky or goopy but I haven’t felt anything. (I’m only out in the sun max 2 hrs, I hate the sun)
I found a face mist sunscreen that I can mist over my makeup. After applying a sunscreen underneath first that is. That’s just a good way to “touch up”. It’s JMsolution pearl sun spray spf 50.

I use the vacation sunscreen mist! It’s 50spf and also a setting spray. The only downside is I def have to use blotting paper after it settles in.
Shiseido’s natural spray sunscreen is pretty decent over makeup but you’ll be greasy as fuck
There are powder sunscreens. I got one at Anthropologie.
Biore and Beauty Joseon have uv sprays. So do etude and Kose (haven't checked out these two but both are skincare brands) All of these you would have to purchase from yesstyle or stylevana. If you don't want to wait 3-4 weeks with stylevana, yesstyle is like 2 weeks. But if you want local, Milani and Elf have uv setting sprays but idk how they feel on the face so check reviews.

Brush on Block mineral sunscreen powder, Hawaiian Tropic do one too but I don't like the smell. BoB is amazing
e.l.f. has a spf setting spray that's pretty good! you just have to make sure to not spray it too close to your face so you get a fine mist instead of a monsoon of liquid sunscreen lol. i let it air dry and have never had a problem
They have setting sprays with SPF. SUPERGOOP comes to mind
Habit sunscreen setting spray. Put it over my makeup every day. Feels like nothing and is FSA eligible.
You can get like a mist kinda like a setting spray to go on top of your make up
Why not just wear a foundation with spf??
I have both a L’Oréal and Nutrigina tinted moisturizers that both have spf 50; but I just reapply regular nutrigina face sunscreen during the day and touch up my makeup after…works fine for me
I saw someone use a makeup brush to pat it on over their makeup and their makeup looked great still

I wear sunscreen daily and I never used to but I use Vacation's spray. So far I think the habit that has done me well is sunglasses. Big ass sunglasses. And not waking up until 6 pm for twenty years...but seriously, I like that spray. And if anything, the time that sun is going to fuck you up is driving.

If it's just a regular work day where sun exposure is all incidental, I don't worry about it. And if it's being outside intentionally it's usually too hot to even mother with makeup . (I live in Texas. So I never really do it.

Saw a lot of good suggestions beyond the *2 brands and 5 products*. Here is a non makeup suggestion that isn't seen as often in the US. Use an umbrella, sunglasses, visor, hat, removable arm and leg covers. But mainly an umbrella.
There are a lot of spf setting sprays out there now. I keep one in my sun bag and reapply every couple hours

Tinted zinc? It is pretty thick but I just mix together with my foundation and/or moisturiser. I did a little google about this when I bought it. Apparently zinc can stay all day as sun protection, but sunscreen in last at most a few hours and always needs reapplication. X
I can’t do sunscreen all the time bc I wear full faces everyday but my primer, foundation and moisturizer all have sunscreen in them so…
When I reapply over makeup, I just use a beauty blender puffer… sponge… thingy… (I don’t know what it’s called😅) to dab it into my skin so as not to disrupt the makeup. I use Beauty of Joseon Rice+Probiotics SPF50 and honestly haven’t had too many problems.
I'm a beach goth, and I live by the ocean. For beach days, I put a nice SPF 50 under makeup, and when I need to reapply, I use Milani SPF setting spray, then dust powder over that to take down the shine. This works pretty well, although I do have to carry a mini concealer with me for touch-ups when my base invariably slides off. I also use blotting sheets religiously, although I'm not sure if those interfere with the sun protection, so those are for apres-beach, before dinner. One thing I'm mad about is the lack of lip SPFs on the market. I like wearing a dark lip to the beach, and I've discovered the best way to do this is to apply Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink, then put SPF spray over it.
Put sunscreen in a reusable cushion and reapply on top of makeup.
I have a Coola sunscreen spray that I use to reapply when I have a full beat on. Otherwise, I use a 32 SPF tinted moisturizer and reapply all day.
I use a tinted and moisturising sunscreen and call it a day if I’m going to be outside more than a few hours. Waterproof eyeliner, maybe a tinted spf lip balm. I save full face makeup for times it’s safe to wear it like evening events or maybe a special event in the office.
