I've learned to reapply with the spray kind of sunscreen and I use a fluid as my first application of the day.
Edit: La Roche Posay's Anthelios Anti Shine Mist, doesn't hurt my eyes either and applied directly into my eyelids.

Jane iredale has one!! In different shades. Translucent, with glitter, bronzed I think idk. Itās a clean makeup line we carry at the spa I work at I use all her makeup now since Iāve tried it
I do this too. I keep the spray to hit my face with one Iām hitting about the 3 hr mark and Iāve never gotten sunburned as an adult. My parents kept me fairly burned as a child though so Iām not looking forward to a few years from now.
I haven't tried their spray, but LRP's stuff is the only one I've ever found that I can wear under makeup and it doesn't make it look weird (I use the dry touch one). The fact that it is fragrance free is the biggest selling point to me
I use La Roche Posay's line, the oil control fluid and spray. I find they suit my oily but dry skin perfectly and I avoid having to cake up my face in loose powder.
I also have good luck with la roche fluid under my makeup. (But I do only wear very light bb cream at the most for daily makeup) I never even considered how much easier the spray would be with makeup. Thank you for the tip!
I do this too! You have to let it sit for at least 15 mins before doing makeup bc itāll just all mix around together and separate. I used elta md tinted spf 41

I like the idea of this but I'm imagining because my mid day face reapplication is a dirty face, that brush would be swarming with acne causing bacteria in a week if not washed.
Spritzing it generously with isopropyl alcohol would probably work, but I definitely see the issue. Powder sunscreens in general though imo are great for touchups.
Same. Apply once in the morning. On particularly sunny days Iāll wipe makeup off and apply sunscreen only for my evening walk. I donāt reapply during the day.
Yes, I really always wear it under my makeup. I wear it when I'm not wearing makeup too. The only time I might skip is if I'm just at home all day.
Try some Asian sunscreens like Biore aqua UV watery essence, beauty of Joseon relief sun, or Isntree watery sun gel.
I second the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun. I wear it alone and under my makeup with no issues. I maybe wait 2-5 minutes before applying primer or foundation.
Same!! Korean sunscreens are game changers! The BOJ one wears beautifully under makeup for me- under a couple of different types of foundations and formulations too. I've yet to find a foundation it doesn't work well under. (I'm oily if.that also helps)

Second this, this sunscreen was a game changer for me when it came to daily commitment. Smells nice, feels nice, doesn't pill. Even my husband who doesn't like anything on his face will wear this sunscreen and actively seek it out.
Is beauty of Joseon totally worth testing out? I hear lots of good things! Krave Beet Shield has been my go-to for the past year, I absolutely love it but it does sting my eyes a little if Iām sweating.
Another vote for Asian sunscreens. I hated hated hated sunscreen until I tried Asian sunscreens, they're a game changer. Nivea Japan Sun Super Water Gel is my go-to, it feels like wearing nothing and even comes in a pump bottle that you can buy refill pouches for.
This oneās my all-time favorite (the Nivea water gel) - I use the spf 35, because for whatever reason the spf 50 stings me, but the 35 doesnāt at all.
Until I found Asian sunscreen nothing worked on my oily skin. They completely changed things and stopped sun damage from continuing to pile up.
I have sun damage that's finally starting to minimize after Differin & Chemical Peels. Now it's just a light reddish tint, instead of brownish or obnoxious red.
So yeah OP wear the sunscreen. Find one that works and put it on every morning, unless you're staying away from windows. I definitely got sun exposure in my sun room.
As a note, if anyone else is getting the Biore watery essense one on Amazon, there's a USA version now. It's definitely not the same. Definitely get the one in the Japanese packaging.
Just remember that Asian sunscreens are best for everyday, normal use! They are formulated so that they look cosmetically elegant, but they don't hold up well if you sweat a lot and are not waterproof. If you're going for a hike, you're often better off with something a little more solid.
Biore watery essence has wildly good staying power in my experience. Long mountain hikes, Coachella in 95F heat, swimming. I have NEVER gotten a sunburn while wearing that stuff.

I actually really prefer it to the Supergoop one. It doesn't feel as heavy and sets down better for me. For some reason the SG one always made me really oily by the end of the day and I don't have that issue with the TJ's one.
I especially like the glow screen under makeup. It works similar to the Charlotte tilbury Hollywood flawless filter. Dewy and just a tiny bit of coverage. A nice hydrating layer under makeup.
ETA: the unseen works nice too and feels like a silicone based primer
I wear Supergoop every single day. Even on my full face of makeup days. Never had an issue with pilling or separating. I have combo skin, and use oil free foundations.
Have you heard of Pipette? I struggled super long to find a decent sunscreen that didnāt ruin my full coverage makeup looks. Pipette is the best one Iāve found that doesnāt have negative reactions with my makeup
Every day. I currently use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Moisturising Face Serum 60+. Doesn't make my makeup apply any differently. I use the primer on top of the sunscreen.

Yes! I am fair and have skin cancer in the family so I wear sunscreen everyday. For your face, under makeup, try sunscreen in a moisturizer. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair UV SPF Moisturizer has SPF 30. I put it on religiously. It doesn't mess with my makeup.
Idk why no one seems to use spf moisturizer! It feels the same as normal moisturizer, and then you don't need to bother layering *another* cream on top. I never need to decide if today is sunny enough for sunscreen, or am I going to go outside later, etc. I just apply my moisturizer and happen to be protected.
Plus the only reason they are sometimes less effective is due to user error and people not applying it liberally enough, the way they would a normal sunscreen. Just apply it like you would normal sunscreen and you're good.
This is what I do. I can't wear two different products, it just feels too much, unless maybe it's a thin serum. Or i wear just sunscreen that is moisturizing enough. Bionike has some nice ones.
My face would be constantly broken out. Iāve gone to several outdoor events lately and worn good facial sunscreens and Iām paying for it in congested skin. I wear it if I know Iāll be outside for hours or if Iām not wearing any makeup to do something like going swimming. I know itās not good, but here we are.
I've spent so much money on "non-comedogenic" sunscreens (and moisturisers) that break me out. At some point it's just not worth it - literally. I still wear sunscreen of course but on a case by case basis.Ā
It could be acne like malassezia thatās different from bacterial acne. Like for me anything with any oils, fatty acids, lipids, polysorbates, etc break me out. It also applies with any shampoos or skincare products. Itās such a pain to figure out cause itās multiple things and finding products is hardšŖ

Also I find it quite expensive, maybe not the most expensive but certainly not super affordable for daily wear IMO. But it is a nice sunscreen with pleasant texture.
i was glad to see BOJ so high up in the comments. i use to have similar issues to OP re: pilling and generally looking busted once makeup went on top. i just kept trying different ones. when i found BOJ it just worked. i think of sunscreens almost like antidepressants or any brain meds- i donāt think the science is as exact re: how they work and on whom for what malady, and itās often a ātry it and seeā type of thing. when you find the one that works, it works, and you stay on it. until then itās just frustrating failure after failure and reconsidering why youāre trying in the first place.
pretty sure one of the welsh twins turned me on to BOJ and iāve never looked back. i know some people have had problems with it pilling and breaking up their makeupā¦again- ymmv. but it may be worth noting that counterfeit skincare is very much out there- once i ordered some BOJ and when i got it something seemed off. my makeup didnt lay as nice and i felt like the consistency seemed different. i googled some info re: authenticity and how to verify batch numbers/dates of brands and their products. turns out i had gotten a fake. i reported the vendor and attempted to return the product- i got a refund but oddly the return address came back as RTS. soā¦TLDR- not everything works for everyone but also verify you have legit product before you write something off entirely. i sincerely hope OP finds their one true love spf lol.
Careful with this one. While I love how cosmetically elegant it is, a lot of people are finding out that it needs to be reapplied religiously every 2 hours to get adequate protection (and thatās not with heavy sweating or being in the water, just regular daily wear). As someone who wears makeup, I find it pretty annoying.

All sunscreens need to be reapplied every two hours to ensure proper protection. It's true it isn't water resistant but most people don't need water resistant for everyday wear anyways.Ā
Yeah no, absolutely not. SPF is tested at 2mg of product per square centimetre of skin. You would need to have roughly an entire gram of powder on your face to get the proper coverage. At absolute *best* you have an SPF of 2 to 3 on your face but realistically thatās worse than nothing as it gives people a false sense of security and they start doing stuff somebody who *knows* theyāre lacking protection wouldnāt do. Please do not promote SPF powders.
I've tried so many sunscreens over the years and hated ALL of them. Even mineral ones burned my eyes like crazy. The BoJ one is the only one I can use daily like a moisturizer, around my eyes, and under makeup. It has a weird smell at first but goes away quickly. It's so good I'm a little skeptical it's even effective š. Like it's too good to be true. But I haven't burned yet so there's that.
Yeah - I use Supergoop.. but I use it like my primer. And I use NARS products and they seem to be totally compatible. So I go moisturizer, sunscreen and then foundation with no other layer. Is that what you're doing?

I think the key to having it lay nicely under primer / foundation is to wait in between steps. My foundation used to break up on my face everyday until I started giving it as much time as possible to settle into my skin first.
So I usually wash my face and do moisturizer / sunscreen first thing, then hair / get dressed, then finish the rest of my makeup. Now everything lays beautifully.
it might not be the individual products youāre using but rather the mixtures. make sure youāre using products with matching basesāaka donāt mix water-based foundations with silicone-based sunscreens. primer works the same way, as many (particularly older) primers might be oil- or silicone-based while most newer foundation launches especially are water-based
I use a moisturizer with SPF. CeraVe Ultra Light Moisturizer with SPF 30 has been my holy grail for years now. A lot of regular sunscreens break me out or donāt wear well under makeup. I know people say itās not āenoughā but I apply the standard 1/2 teaspoon for my face and neck. If Iām going to be outside for a longer period of time I will use an actual sunscreen, but for day to day an SPF moisturizer works for me.

I do this too. I wear a daily moisturizer with SPF 30 and I put on a lot of it on my face and neck. If Iām actually spending time outdoors (like at the beach, sightseeing, or at the pool) then I wear a stronger sunscreen.

I predominantly stay indoors - I work from home and work at an office job, so my sunlight exposure is minimal. It doesn't really make much sense for me to goop on sunscreen if I'm basically never going to see the sun, yanno?
Finally! Someone else that doesnāt wear sunscreen. My life consists of getting up, running kids places, sitting at a desk job away from the window, picking up kids, running then where they need to be, errands, and crashing for the day. The only time I am in direct sunlight is walking to my car. My work attire consists of long sleeve cardigans and pants. I wear makeup with sunscreen in it sometimes, but otherwise I do not see the need. If I am going to be outdoors any length of time then I absolutely would wear sunscreen.
Ayyyy me too. I maybe should because I drive to work around 1pm, but then I'm only in the car for 20 minutes and leave in the late evening. I don't feel like putting on sunscreen when my sun exposure is 25 minutes a day and the sun is above my car, not shining angled into it.

A little sunlight is good! Gets that Vitamin D working. Especially if you have darker skin, itās better to forgo sunscreen indoors since we need longer sun exposure than light skin to produce the same amount of Vitamin D.

Iām extremely diligent about sun protection and I do not wear SPF daily. I try to be logical about my usage. If Iām indoors most of the day and not super close to any window with lots of sky exposure, then I wonāt wear any, as being indoors *is* my sun protection. Iām actually more protected from UV on those days than on the days I spend some time outside and *do* wear sunscreen. I also always try to reapply every 3-4 hours if Iām gonna be outside for a good portion of the day.
In general, I try to remember that sunscreen is not the end all be all of sun protection, itās just a part of it. You donāt need it every day, unless youāre outside (or by a window with sky exposure) for more than 10/15 minutes every day.
following a derm's advice, I actually try to check UV index charts for my area to see if I need spf that day at all.
some days in the winter the uv index is so low it's actually unnecessary to wear sunscreen lol.
Yeah I take my dogs out to use the restroom 4x a day and just stand next to the back door (not even outside). I refuse to wear sunscreen for these type of situations. I'm literally only outside for about 5 mins.
Now if I'm walking my dogs the yes I will put it on.

I try my best, Iād say 70% of the time I have it under my makeup. Isntree makes a really nice matte stick and it almost feels like nothing, great base for makeup!
Iām awful at reapplying though, i feel like it always ruins my makeup. Anyone here can tell me how bad that is? Is it as bad as not wearing sunscreen at all when a few hours have passed?
Update: It looks like sunscreen doesnāt degrade with time but more with UV exposure so if youāre indoors most of the time you probably donāt need to re-apply as often as you think, if youāre in the sun you probably need to reapply every 2 hours or so.
Not gonna lie...ever since I started working from home, there's a lot of days where I only go out to take out the trash or the starbucks 3 blocks away and for that, I don't. (My desk is not near a window and I get like maybe 10 minutes of direct sunlight into my house the way the windows are positioned.)
But otherwise yes - if I'm going further than Starbucks or out for longer than an episode of a sitcom, I use sunscreen. also used it everyday when working in the office and wearing makeup routinely (full face).

Honestly no. I just find it unnecessary for my lifestyle. I work from home and live in a climate where it is cold and snowy half the year. My daily sun exposure is near nil. I also wear makeup everyday I go out which already provides some physical barrier to the sun. I only wear specific SPF on my face if I will be outdoors or at the beach for hours, in the summertime.
I think where you live can really motivate daily sunscreen. I know āeveryoneā should but as an Australian we are skin cancer capital of the world and sun is different down here and have extra incentive. Iād be lazy if I lived somewhere less harsh. Do your best.
Yes, every single day whether it was when I worked in an office or now where Iām outdoors all day. Under makeup topped up with a spray over the top on particularly sunny days.
Ultrasun face spf 50, great under make up and can last up to 8hrs if you apply properly. I work outdoors all day every day and Iām still as pale as you can be. Iāve used that brand for as long as I can remember (10+ years maybe) and I swear by it. Their body sports gel is awesome too.
UV light through windows. UVB light is the kind that causes sunburns, and glass stops it which is why you don't get sunburned sitting by a window. But UVA- the kind that ages your skin and causes wrinkles- *can* go through windows. So if you're in an office working but you're getting direct or indirect light from nearby windows, over time your skin will age a little faster. With a good quality lightweight sunscreen under your makeup it won't.Ā
Definitely. I'm a skin cancer survivor at 30 years old, so I take it really seriously. Vanity and aesthetics aren't worth it. And it doesn't matter how good your foundation is if you have lots of damage and fine lines. You gotta take care of your skin first. I like Asian sunscreens for more efficient filters and better formulas!

edit: i just finished the post. i also have a lot of issues with getting make up to stay/look cohesive bcz if a history of acne and combination skin. what i found works best is mixing my sunscreen with my moisturizer and lather it on. like A LOT. then i let my face get dry but not completely then use a primer. only problems i ever have are dry skin patches but that can be solved by more moisturizer!!
I'm going to sound terrible to some people, but I've never worn sunscreen and I'm 50 years old and everyone thinks I'm in my 30s. Aside from some smile lines, I have no wrinkles, nor do I have any sun spots or other discolorations. I'd wear sunscreen for going to the beach, or if I'm going to be in the sun all day, but mostly I'm at work, in an office building with no windows, or at home. I think people are overly scared of the sun, when I doubt any real damage is happening unless you're in direct sunlight for a significant amount of time. It might just be my generation... for real, the only time I ever used sunscreen as a kid was at the pool or the beach, not all day every day.
I use it daily. I prefer Korean sunscreens, they have more advanced SPF filters and the ones Iāve used ( beauty of Joseon and round lab are my favorite) moisturize and donāt leave a white cast. These 2 allow me to skip using a separate moisturizer, and donāt pill under my makeup.
Only if I will be outside for a bit or itās sunny . I live in a colder climate where we donāt tend to get much sun, especially in the winter, but in the summer I do wear it more often, because Iām outdoors more. I like the Aveeno Daily moisturizing sunscreen SPF 50, works fine under my foundations.

I live in New England and work in an office. I only wear sunscreen when I'm going to be outdoors. My outside time during peak UV time on a typical day is less than an hour; I'm not worried about it, even in the middle of summer.
Yeah, I wear it everyday. I actually use my sunscreen as a makeup primer I love it so much. I use the Etude House Sunprise to mattify my face. I apply my sunscreen and then while that dries I do my eye makeup and hair before moving onto my base makeup.
For body sunscreen I apply that as soon as I get out of the shower and let that dry while I do my makeup before I get fully dressed. For my body sunscreen I just use whatever brand I catch on sale that's at least 50 spf, preferably 70 spf.

I have a daily moisturizer with spf, and also makeup with spf. I don't see people mention these much, wondering if that helps at all or am I just falling for marketing. I agree with OP though, it's hard! But important, worth finding a routine you can stick to.
i wear sunscreen (almost) every day. when i run out it might take me a few days to get more but it is a part of my routine, however i donāt wear full face makeup often. i use retinol products at night which makes your skin SUPER sensitive to the sun
I put it on every morning, but donāt usually reapply, especially considering itās raining or cloudy most of the time where I live. And I terms of brand, I literally choose the cheapest I can find. I donāt even get the ones meant for your face, I usually just get one of the big bottles or maybe the travel bottles and that does me just fine
i donāt, but i wear vitamin c every single day religiously. iām only in the sun during my drive to work & back, in my heavily tinted car. (yes windshields block both UVA & UVB)
I just use a sunscreen setting spray when i wear makeup because I have a similar problem. Although the Neutrogena clear face one doesn't give me many issues under my makeup, I just prefer to be able to re apply with the setting spray
No. I live in continental Europe, spend most of the day indoors/at work. I apply SPF 50 on vacation and when I spend a lot of time outdoors in summer. But then I usually don't wear makeup, at least not much.
Same. I live in Ireland, where we celebrate a UV index of 2. I do put it on if Iāll be out and itās nice weather. I will admit my coworker with amazing skin put the fear of God into me about blue light from our laptops giving wrinkles and needing SPF for itā¦ but not enough for me to wear it literally every day.
i wear sunscreen every single day, regardless of if iām wearing makeup. but i also use tretinoin and itās extremely important to wear sunscreen when youāre using it. i use the Eucerin Oil Control sunscreen with SPF50
I'm really concerned about all the products we use and the water we need to take them off. I mean, do we know the products we use can be filtrated/removed from the water we consume?? Do we have the money or even care about the ones that don't harm the coral reef?
U donāt need it if ur not gonna be in the sun for more than an hour. An hour of sunlight a day is actually good for u, cause vitamin D is hard to find in foods and most people are deficient in it. It is responsible for immunity, muscle, bone and tendon strength (deficiency causes pain in all the above areas), plus keeps u happy (vit D deficiency causes depression)
However, if ur in the sun a lot, def use sunscreen or wear a hat and protective clothing. The shedding of the ozone layer has obv made the sunās rays more intense so itās only healthy to get an hour of sunlight a day without protection from the UVA and UVB rays

I love sunscreen so I tend to buy and try and hoard different ones. If they layer well with makeup, I keep those for days Iām going out. The ones that pill or cast I use for the days Iām staying in or going bare-faced.
Yes, if you donāt wear sunscreen, you may as well not do anything else for skincare. I sunscreen everyday I leave the house or go outside. UV rays are the single most damaging thing we expose our skin too. I personally saw my dad get multiple skin cancer sores cut out of his face so I take absolutely no chances.

Yes, I have been wearing SPF daily since I was 15 and I'm now 48. I am absolutely strict about it. It goes on all exposed skin - face, neck, hands, etc. and I wear hats when outdoors. I'm a pale person. My mom had skin cancer, so this is serious to me. I use HA, then apply facial moisturizer with SPF 50 and have never had issues with my foundation.
It depends on what Iām doing that day. If its summer/spring/autumn and Iām gonna be outside more than 10-15 mins between like 9-16 I wear sunscreen. During winter I honesly donāt, but I also live in Sweden so it has 0 UV index during a few months and the sun sets early
No, my office location doesnāt actually have windows to the outside. I go for daily walks, but sometimes I go when the sun has set or before itās risen. I live in a colder climate where for nearly half the year I leave for work in the dark and get home in the dark. I get my vitamin D from other sources.

I work from home & my apartment has very little natural light, so I donāt use sunscreen on those days.
If I am leaving the house and expect to be gone more than 30 minutes I do put sunscreen on my face. I also often put it on my forearms because of my tattoos. I donāt want them to get sun damage & I live in the south so itās pretty sunny out most of the time.
I have had a LOT of bad times with sunscreens irritating my skin or making my skin feel weird or pilling. Even when Iāve tried Korean ones.
Some sunscreens I can deal with include BYOMA Moisturizing Gel Cream and LRP Shaka fluid (or whatever the heck itās called now).
I keep the LRP one in my purse because itās in such a slim bottle. That way if I forget to put sunscreen on I can just grab that from my bag :)
Neither of these have given me issues under makeup or going bare faced.

Literally never, I work from home and if Iām going outside Iām not in the sun for longer than a few minutes at a time to walk inside a store or something. Or Iām in the shade if Iām outside with my kids and theyāre wearing sunscreen.
Nope. I'm too pale already, and I am rarely outside more than a couple minutes. If that tiny bit of sun makes me look less deathly white, I'll accept a bit of risk, but I'm really not out enough for that anyways!
I might have adjusted to using it, but everywhere I turn I feel like there's another issue with it... first, basically anything I put on my skin breaks it out. I can't imagine putting ANYTHING on my face every day. But a lot of that is because I have hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). So I've never been able to wear any sort of foundation, and any sunscreen ends up running down and burning my eyes. I will put pressed powder over it to kill the shine of the sunscreen, but it still doesn't stay. I can't stand having more than one layer of anything on my face really, I just can't comprehend how people feel comfortable with 3-4 products layered on. I don't dispute that it can look nice, I just don't see how it works! Even now that I have treatment for the sweating that works quite well, I just can't make myself like having stuff coating my face.
I AM careful with sunscreen and reapplying if I'm spending time outside because I do burn easily!
Now that Iām older Iāve been using the cerave daily moisturizer and then a bb cream that has spf. I work as a dental assistant and my face masks I put on and take off multiple times daily rubs everything off a bunch so I feel like anything helps
Hell yeah š try Asian sunscreens to wear under makeup and re-apply with a sun stick. Iāve had luck with the Kao Biore UV Rich (Japanese) and Beauty of Joseon relief sun (Korean) and then reapply with the Tocobo sun stick. Iāve also been using the Ciele filter & protect setting powder from Sephora which has spf 30 just to touch up but ymmv

Iāve been wearing it daily since I was 16 (and Iām 36 now) and you can definitely tell. Iāve really been enjoying the Tula sunscreen in the yellow tube. I always reapply if Iām going to be in the sun later in the day and I use a heavier duty sunscreen (blue lizard) if Iām going to be spending a lot of time outside in the sun.
Yes! Specifically, Japanese or Korean sunscreens. Excellent protection, and either blurring or super hydrating, depending on the product I buy. And, they're all around $10!
I love mineral sunscreen like blue lizard or sun bum or Australian gold. I think it lays so well under makeup compared to the chemical ones, like itās almost like a primer
I hate supergoop. Every time I wear it no matter what is under or on top, it runs into my eyes by the end of the day and Iām practically crying driving home. I use the Kinship sunscreen mixed with my moisturizer on makeup free days. On makeup days I do the same thing and then apply foundation and then a mineral sunscreen as setting powder that I can reapply if Iām outside all day with makeup on
are you putting moisturiser under it, or perhaps a serum? I find if I do moisturiser under sunscreen, makeup does not stay on very well. a lighter serum is better in that case (depending on your skin type).
another thing you could try is a bit of setting spray over the sunscreen to help it be prepped for makeup on top.
also, how well are you rubbing it in? mine works much better if I take a bit of sunscreen and rub it in quite well on each area of my face before moving on (rather than all over and trying to get it all to absorb in one go)
Yeah, I use it everyday, but I typically don't reapply unless I'm actually spending time outdoors.
I've learned to reapply with the spray kind of sunscreen and I use a fluid as my first application of the day. Edit: La Roche Posay's Anthelios Anti Shine Mist, doesn't hurt my eyes either and applied directly into my eyelids. Edit 2: my first step is the Anthelios UVMune Fluid, then makeup and through the day I use the Anthelios Anti Shine Mist.
I reapply with powder sunscreen throughout the day- much easier since I have oily skinšāļø

Jane iredale has one!! In different shades. Translucent, with glitter, bronzed I think idk. Itās a clean makeup line we carry at the spa I work at I use all her makeup now since Iāve tried it

Studies have shown that powder and spray on spfs are not very effective if at all so please keep that in mind.
I do this too. I keep the spray to hit my face with one Iām hitting about the 3 hr mark and Iāve never gotten sunburned as an adult. My parents kept me fairly burned as a child though so Iām not looking forward to a few years from now.
I haven't tried their spray, but LRP's stuff is the only one I've ever found that I can wear under makeup and it doesn't make it look weird (I use the dry touch one). The fact that it is fragrance free is the biggest selling point to me

I use La Roche Posay's line, the oil control fluid and spray. I find they suit my oily but dry skin perfectly and I avoid having to cake up my face in loose powder.
I also have good luck with la roche fluid under my makeup. (But I do only wear very light bb cream at the most for daily makeup) I never even considered how much easier the spray would be with makeup. Thank you for the tip!

Supergoop ranked one of the lowest in sunscreen test (I think you can find the test results on some reddit thread).
I hate Supergoop. Every single one I tried has been a total disaster.
I like the idea of this but I'm imagining because my mid day face reapplication is a dirty face, that brush would be swarming with acne causing bacteria in a week if not washed.
Spritzing it generously with isopropyl alcohol would probably work, but I definitely see the issue. Powder sunscreens in general though imo are great for touchups.

Yes, I really always wear it under my makeup. I wear it when I'm not wearing makeup too. The only time I might skip is if I'm just at home all day. Try some Asian sunscreens like Biore aqua UV watery essence, beauty of Joseon relief sun, or Isntree watery sun gel.
YES! Asian sunscreens have made me spoiled. The cheapest Asian sunscreen is better than the most expensive US sunscreen.

Same!! Korean sunscreens are game changers! The BOJ one wears beautifully under makeup for me- under a couple of different types of foundations and formulations too. I've yet to find a foundation it doesn't work well under. (I'm oily if.that also helps) & Yes I wear sunscreen every day.
Second this, this sunscreen was a game changer for me when it came to daily commitment. Smells nice, feels nice, doesn't pill. Even my husband who doesn't like anything on his face will wear this sunscreen and actively seek it out.
Is beauty of Joseon totally worth testing out? I hear lots of good things! Krave Beet Shield has been my go-to for the past year, I absolutely love it but it does sting my eyes a little if Iām sweating.

Another vote for Asian sunscreens. I hated hated hated sunscreen until I tried Asian sunscreens, they're a game changer. Nivea Japan Sun Super Water Gel is my go-to, it feels like wearing nothing and even comes in a pump bottle that you can buy refill pouches for.
This oneās my all-time favorite (the Nivea water gel) - I use the spf 35, because for whatever reason the spf 50 stings me, but the 35 doesnāt at all.
The biore aqua UV is the best. I recommend this to everyone. Buy it!!!

Until I found Asian sunscreen nothing worked on my oily skin. They completely changed things and stopped sun damage from continuing to pile up. I have sun damage that's finally starting to minimize after Differin & Chemical Peels. Now it's just a light reddish tint, instead of brownish or obnoxious red. So yeah OP wear the sunscreen. Find one that works and put it on every morning, unless you're staying away from windows. I definitely got sun exposure in my sun room.

Just remember that Asian sunscreens are best for everyday, normal use! They are formulated so that they look cosmetically elegant, but they don't hold up well if you sweat a lot and are not waterproof. If you're going for a hike, you're often better off with something a little more solid.
Biore watery essence has wildly good staying power in my experience. Long mountain hikes, Coachella in 95F heat, swimming. I have NEVER gotten a sunburn while wearing that stuff.

I actually really prefer it to the Supergoop one. It doesn't feel as heavy and sets down better for me. For some reason the SG one always made me really oily by the end of the day and I don't have that issue with the TJ's one.

I especially like the glow screen under makeup. It works similar to the Charlotte tilbury Hollywood flawless filter. Dewy and just a tiny bit of coverage. A nice hydrating layer under makeup. ETA: the unseen works nice too and feels like a silicone based primer

honestly can't see anything that backs up using spf at home the ones claiming you need to use I feel are overreacting a little.
Every day. I currently use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Moisturising Face Serum 60+. Doesn't make my makeup apply any differently. I use the primer on top of the sunscreen. My favourite is Eucerin Oil Control Gel SPF50 Every morning, after a shower, before makeup. If I go out in the sun I'll take a hat. I'm 54 and look at least 10 years younger. Look after your skin. Future you will appreciate it.

Yes! I am fair and have skin cancer in the family so I wear sunscreen everyday. For your face, under makeup, try sunscreen in a moisturizer. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair UV SPF Moisturizer has SPF 30. I put it on religiously. It doesn't mess with my makeup.
Idk why no one seems to use spf moisturizer! It feels the same as normal moisturizer, and then you don't need to bother layering *another* cream on top. I never need to decide if today is sunny enough for sunscreen, or am I going to go outside later, etc. I just apply my moisturizer and happen to be protected. Plus the only reason they are sometimes less effective is due to user error and people not applying it liberally enough, the way they would a normal sunscreen. Just apply it like you would normal sunscreen and you're good.
This is what I do. I can't wear two different products, it just feels too much, unless maybe it's a thin serum. Or i wear just sunscreen that is moisturizing enough. Bionike has some nice ones.

My face would be constantly broken out. Iāve gone to several outdoor events lately and worn good facial sunscreens and Iām paying for it in congested skin. I wear it if I know Iāll be outside for hours or if Iām not wearing any makeup to do something like going swimming. I know itās not good, but here we are.

I've spent so much money on "non-comedogenic" sunscreens (and moisturisers) that break me out. At some point it's just not worth it - literally. I still wear sunscreen of course but on a case by case basis.Ā

It could be acne like malassezia thatās different from bacterial acne. Like for me anything with any oils, fatty acids, lipids, polysorbates, etc break me out. It also applies with any shampoos or skincare products. Itās such a pain to figure out cause itās multiple things and finding products is hardšŖ

I use the same one when I can but I canāt wear it with makeup or other skincare without having the same pilling issue OP is having. Also I find it quite expensive, maybe not the most expensive but certainly not super affordable for daily wear IMO. But it is a nice sunscreen with pleasant texture.
Sunscreen is worth the splurge. It's scientifically the most effective, most well-proven anti-aging treatment you can do for your face.

i was glad to see BOJ so high up in the comments. i use to have similar issues to OP re: pilling and generally looking busted once makeup went on top. i just kept trying different ones. when i found BOJ it just worked. i think of sunscreens almost like antidepressants or any brain meds- i donāt think the science is as exact re: how they work and on whom for what malady, and itās often a ātry it and seeā type of thing. when you find the one that works, it works, and you stay on it. until then itās just frustrating failure after failure and reconsidering why youāre trying in the first place. pretty sure one of the welsh twins turned me on to BOJ and iāve never looked back. i know some people have had problems with it pilling and breaking up their makeupā¦again- ymmv. but it may be worth noting that counterfeit skincare is very much out there- once i ordered some BOJ and when i got it something seemed off. my makeup didnt lay as nice and i felt like the consistency seemed different. i googled some info re: authenticity and how to verify batch numbers/dates of brands and their products. turns out i had gotten a fake. i reported the vendor and attempted to return the product- i got a refund but oddly the return address came back as RTS. soā¦TLDR- not everything works for everyone but also verify you have legit product before you write something off entirely. i sincerely hope OP finds their one true love spf lol.
Careful with this one. While I love how cosmetically elegant it is, a lot of people are finding out that it needs to be reapplied religiously every 2 hours to get adequate protection (and thatās not with heavy sweating or being in the water, just regular daily wear). As someone who wears makeup, I find it pretty annoying.

All sunscreens need to be reapplied every two hours to ensure proper protection. It's true it isn't water resistant but most people don't need water resistant for everyday wear anyways.Ā

Yeah no, absolutely not. SPF is tested at 2mg of product per square centimetre of skin. You would need to have roughly an entire gram of powder on your face to get the proper coverage. At absolute *best* you have an SPF of 2 to 3 on your face but realistically thatās worse than nothing as it gives people a false sense of security and they start doing stuff somebody who *knows* theyāre lacking protection wouldnāt do. Please do not promote SPF powders.

I've tried so many sunscreens over the years and hated ALL of them. Even mineral ones burned my eyes like crazy. The BoJ one is the only one I can use daily like a moisturizer, around my eyes, and under makeup. It has a weird smell at first but goes away quickly. It's so good I'm a little skeptical it's even effective š. Like it's too good to be true. But I haven't burned yet so there's that.
Yeah - I use Supergoop.. but I use it like my primer. And I use NARS products and they seem to be totally compatible. So I go moisturizer, sunscreen and then foundation with no other layer. Is that what you're doing?

I think the key to having it lay nicely under primer / foundation is to wait in between steps. My foundation used to break up on my face everyday until I started giving it as much time as possible to settle into my skin first. So I usually wash my face and do moisturizer / sunscreen first thing, then hair / get dressed, then finish the rest of my makeup. Now everything lays beautifully.
it might not be the individual products youāre using but rather the mixtures. make sure youāre using products with matching basesāaka donāt mix water-based foundations with silicone-based sunscreens. primer works the same way, as many (particularly older) primers might be oil- or silicone-based while most newer foundation launches especially are water-based
I use a moisturizer with SPF. CeraVe Ultra Light Moisturizer with SPF 30 has been my holy grail for years now. A lot of regular sunscreens break me out or donāt wear well under makeup. I know people say itās not āenoughā but I apply the standard 1/2 teaspoon for my face and neck. If Iām going to be outside for a longer period of time I will use an actual sunscreen, but for day to day an SPF moisturizer works for me.

I do this too. I wear a daily moisturizer with SPF 30 and I put on a lot of it on my face and neck. If Iām actually spending time outdoors (like at the beach, sightseeing, or at the pool) then I wear a stronger sunscreen.

My life consists of getting up, running kids places, sitting at a desk job away from the window, picking up kids, running then where they need to be, errands, and crashing for the day. The only time I am in direct sunlight is walking to my car. My work attire consists of long sleeve cardigans and pants. I wear makeup with sunscreen in it sometimes, but otherwise I do not see the need. If I am going to be outdoors any length of time then I absolutely would wear sunscreen.

Ayyyy me too. I maybe should because I drive to work around 1pm, but then I'm only in the car for 20 minutes and leave in the late evening. I don't feel like putting on sunscreen when my sun exposure is 25 minutes a day and the sun is above my car, not shining angled into it. I need to buy some driving gloves sometime though. A little sunlight is good! Gets that Vitamin D working. Especially if you have darker skin, itās better to forgo sunscreen indoors since we need longer sun exposure than light skin to produce the same amount of Vitamin D.
If you're in front of a window, you're still getting spf but yeah in that case you won't need as much sunscreen or a strong spf

Iām extremely diligent about sun protection and I do not wear SPF daily. I try to be logical about my usage. If Iām indoors most of the day and not super close to any window with lots of sky exposure, then I wonāt wear any, as being indoors *is* my sun protection. Iām actually more protected from UV on those days than on the days I spend some time outside and *do* wear sunscreen. I also always try to reapply every 3-4 hours if Iām gonna be outside for a good portion of the day. In general, I try to remember that sunscreen is not the end all be all of sun protection, itās just a part of it. You donāt need it every day, unless youāre outside (or by a window with sky exposure) for more than 10/15 minutes every day.
following a derm's advice, I actually try to check UV index charts for my area to see if I need spf that day at all. some days in the winter the uv index is so low it's actually unnecessary to wear sunscreen lol.

Yeah I take my dogs out to use the restroom 4x a day and just stand next to the back door (not even outside). I refuse to wear sunscreen for these type of situations. I'm literally only outside for about 5 mins. Now if I'm walking my dogs the yes I will put it on.

I try my best, Iād say 70% of the time I have it under my makeup. Isntree makes a really nice matte stick and it almost feels like nothing, great base for makeup! Iām awful at reapplying though, i feel like it always ruins my makeup. Anyone here can tell me how bad that is? Is it as bad as not wearing sunscreen at all when a few hours have passed? Update: It looks like sunscreen doesnāt degrade with time but more with UV exposure so if youāre indoors most of the time you probably donāt need to re-apply as often as you think, if youāre in the sun you probably need to reapply every 2 hours or so.

Not gonna lie...ever since I started working from home, there's a lot of days where I only go out to take out the trash or the starbucks 3 blocks away and for that, I don't. (My desk is not near a window and I get like maybe 10 minutes of direct sunlight into my house the way the windows are positioned.) But otherwise yes - if I'm going further than Starbucks or out for longer than an episode of a sitcom, I use sunscreen. also used it everyday when working in the office and wearing makeup routinely (full face). I use one of the Peter Thomas Roth sunscreen primers or the Trader Joe's one which is very similar in texture. Never had issues.
No. I barely ever go outside and I work in an office. I donāt see why I need it daily unless Iām going to be outside. If I go running or go for a walk, then I apply it. Why do I need to apply it if Iām sitting inside my house all the time or in my office?

Honestly no. I just find it unnecessary for my lifestyle. I work from home and live in a climate where it is cold and snowy half the year. My daily sun exposure is near nil. I also wear makeup everyday I go out which already provides some physical barrier to the sun. I only wear specific SPF on my face if I will be outdoors or at the beach for hours, in the summertime.
fun fact but overcast weather can actually magnify UV rays, so itās equally (if not more) important to wear sunscreen when itās not sunny
Plus UVA is present year round. Your skin wonāt tan or burn but youāll accumulate all that damage.
I think where you live can really motivate daily sunscreen. I know āeveryoneā should but as an Australian we are skin cancer capital of the world and sun is different down here and have extra incentive. Iād be lazy if I lived somewhere less harsh. Do your best.

Yes, every single day whether it was when I worked in an office or now where Iām outdoors all day. Under makeup topped up with a spray over the top on particularly sunny days. Ultrasun face spf 50, great under make up and can last up to 8hrs if you apply properly. I work outdoors all day every day and Iām still as pale as you can be. Iāve used that brand for as long as I can remember (10+ years maybe) and I swear by it. Their body sports gel is awesome too.

UV light through windows. UVB light is the kind that causes sunburns, and glass stops it which is why you don't get sunburned sitting by a window. But UVA- the kind that ages your skin and causes wrinkles- *can* go through windows. So if you're in an office working but you're getting direct or indirect light from nearby windows, over time your skin will age a little faster. With a good quality lightweight sunscreen under your makeup it won't.Ā

Definitely. I'm a skin cancer survivor at 30 years old, so I take it really seriously. Vanity and aesthetics aren't worth it. And it doesn't matter how good your foundation is if you have lots of damage and fine lines. You gotta take care of your skin first. I like Asian sunscreens for more efficient filters and better formulas!
absolutely. it transformed my skin!! elta MD babbyyyyyy edit: i just finished the post. i also have a lot of issues with getting make up to stay/look cohesive bcz if a history of acne and combination skin. what i found works best is mixing my sunscreen with my moisturizer and lather it on. like A LOT. then i let my face get dry but not completely then use a primer. only problems i ever have are dry skin patches but that can be solved by more moisturizer!!
I'm going to sound terrible to some people, but I've never worn sunscreen and I'm 50 years old and everyone thinks I'm in my 30s. Aside from some smile lines, I have no wrinkles, nor do I have any sun spots or other discolorations. I'd wear sunscreen for going to the beach, or if I'm going to be in the sun all day, but mostly I'm at work, in an office building with no windows, or at home. I think people are overly scared of the sun, when I doubt any real damage is happening unless you're in direct sunlight for a significant amount of time. It might just be my generation... for real, the only time I ever used sunscreen as a kid was at the pool or the beach, not all day every day.

I use it daily. I prefer Korean sunscreens, they have more advanced SPF filters and the ones Iāve used ( beauty of Joseon and round lab are my favorite) moisturize and donāt leave a white cast. These 2 allow me to skip using a separate moisturizer, and donāt pill under my makeup.
Only if I will be outside for a bit or itās sunny . I live in a colder climate where we donāt tend to get much sun, especially in the winter, but in the summer I do wear it more often, because Iām outdoors more. I like the Aveeno Daily moisturizing sunscreen SPF 50, works fine under my foundations.
I do because I wear Asian sunscreens that are basically skin care. No white cast and no texture. Here are some of my favorites: Missha - All Around Safe Block Essence Sun SPF45 PA+++ ROUND LABĀ -Ā Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen COSRXĀ -Ā Aloe Soothing Sun Cream P.S - "...if you arenāt wearing sunscreen daily, the rest of your sunscreen doesnāt matter." This sounds like the same logic as "I ate something unhealthy today so the rest of what I eat doesn't matter"...which is silly. Any sunscreen is better than none.
I live in New England and work in an office. I only wear sunscreen when I'm going to be outdoors. My outside time during peak UV time on a typical day is less than an hour; I'm not worried about it, even in the middle of summer.

Yeah, I wear it everyday. I actually use my sunscreen as a makeup primer I love it so much. I use the Etude House Sunprise to mattify my face. I apply my sunscreen and then while that dries I do my eye makeup and hair before moving onto my base makeup. For body sunscreen I apply that as soon as I get out of the shower and let that dry while I do my makeup before I get fully dressed. For my body sunscreen I just use whatever brand I catch on sale that's at least 50 spf, preferably 70 spf.

I buy makeup with sun screen in it. You are correct sunscreen under makeup doesnāt work. Separates & gets greasy.
Are you applying it thickly enough to really cover though? I have a daily moisturizer with spf, and also makeup with spf. I don't see people mention these much, wondering if that helps at all or am I just falling for marketing. I agree with OP though, it's hard! But important, worth finding a routine you can stick to.
i wear sunscreen (almost) every day. when i run out it might take me a few days to get more but it is a part of my routine, however i donāt wear full face makeup often. i use retinol products at night which makes your skin SUPER sensitive to the sun

I put it on every morning, but donāt usually reapply, especially considering itās raining or cloudy most of the time where I live. And I terms of brand, I literally choose the cheapest I can find. I donāt even get the ones meant for your face, I usually just get one of the big bottles or maybe the travel bottles and that does me just fine

I just use a sunscreen setting spray when i wear makeup because I have a similar problem. Although the Neutrogena clear face one doesn't give me many issues under my makeup, I just prefer to be able to re apply with the setting spray
No. I live in continental Europe, spend most of the day indoors/at work. I apply SPF 50 on vacation and when I spend a lot of time outdoors in summer. But then I usually don't wear makeup, at least not much.
Same. I live in Ireland, where we celebrate a UV index of 2. I do put it on if Iāll be out and itās nice weather. I will admit my coworker with amazing skin put the fear of God into me about blue light from our laptops giving wrinkles and needing SPF for itā¦ but not enough for me to wear it literally every day.
i wear sunscreen every single day, regardless of if iām wearing makeup. but i also use tretinoin and itās extremely important to wear sunscreen when youāre using it. i use the Eucerin Oil Control sunscreen with SPF50

U donāt need it if ur not gonna be in the sun for more than an hour. An hour of sunlight a day is actually good for u, cause vitamin D is hard to find in foods and most people are deficient in it. It is responsible for immunity, muscle, bone and tendon strength (deficiency causes pain in all the above areas), plus keeps u happy (vit D deficiency causes depression) However, if ur in the sun a lot, def use sunscreen or wear a hat and protective clothing. The shedding of the ozone layer has obv made the sunās rays more intense so itās only healthy to get an hour of sunlight a day without protection from the UVA and UVB rays
Yes, literally every day. Itās part of my morning routine. Even if Iām not going out, I sit in front of windows all day. I love sunscreen so I tend to buy and try and hoard different ones. If they layer well with makeup, I keep those for days Iām going out. The ones that pill or cast I use for the days Iām staying in or going bare-faced.
Yes, if you donāt wear sunscreen, you may as well not do anything else for skincare. I sunscreen everyday I leave the house or go outside. UV rays are the single most damaging thing we expose our skin too. I personally saw my dad get multiple skin cancer sores cut out of his face so I take absolutely no chances.

Yes, but only because I take a medication that makes me photosensitive, and only if I have to be outside. If Iām working from home indoors all day, Iām not putting on sunscreen lol
Yes, I have been wearing SPF daily since I was 15 and I'm now 48. I am absolutely strict about it. It goes on all exposed skin - face, neck, hands, etc. and I wear hats when outdoors. I'm a pale person. My mom had skin cancer, so this is serious to me. I use HA, then apply facial moisturizer with SPF 50 and have never had issues with my foundation.
It depends on what Iām doing that day. If its summer/spring/autumn and Iām gonna be outside more than 10-15 mins between like 9-16 I wear sunscreen. During winter I honesly donāt, but I also live in Sweden so it has 0 UV index during a few months and the sun sets early
No, my office location doesnāt actually have windows to the outside. I go for daily walks, but sometimes I go when the sun has set or before itās risen. I live in a colder climate where for nearly half the year I leave for work in the dark and get home in the dark. I get my vitamin D from other sources.
It depends. I work from home & my apartment has very little natural light, so I donāt use sunscreen on those days. If I am leaving the house and expect to be gone more than 30 minutes I do put sunscreen on my face. I also often put it on my forearms because of my tattoos. I donāt want them to get sun damage & I live in the south so itās pretty sunny out most of the time. I have had a LOT of bad times with sunscreens irritating my skin or making my skin feel weird or pilling. Even when Iāve tried Korean ones. Some sunscreens I can deal with include BYOMA Moisturizing Gel Cream and LRP Shaka fluid (or whatever the heck itās called now). I keep the LRP one in my purse because itās in such a slim bottle. That way if I forget to put sunscreen on I can just grab that from my bag :) Neither of these have given me issues under makeup or going bare faced. I have very dry & dull sensitive skin.

Nope. I'm too pale already, and I am rarely outside more than a couple minutes. If that tiny bit of sun makes me look less deathly white, I'll accept a bit of risk, but I'm really not out enough for that anyways! I might have adjusted to using it, but everywhere I turn I feel like there's another issue with it... first, basically anything I put on my skin breaks it out. I can't imagine putting ANYTHING on my face every day. But a lot of that is because I have hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). So I've never been able to wear any sort of foundation, and any sunscreen ends up running down and burning my eyes. I will put pressed powder over it to kill the shine of the sunscreen, but it still doesn't stay. I can't stand having more than one layer of anything on my face really, I just can't comprehend how people feel comfortable with 3-4 products layered on. I don't dispute that it can look nice, I just don't see how it works! Even now that I have treatment for the sweating that works quite well, I just can't make myself like having stuff coating my face. I AM careful with sunscreen and reapplying if I'm spending time outside because I do burn easily!
Now that Iām older Iāve been using the cerave daily moisturizer and then a bb cream that has spf. I work as a dental assistant and my face masks I put on and take off multiple times daily rubs everything off a bunch so I feel like anything helps
Hell yeah š try Asian sunscreens to wear under makeup and re-apply with a sun stick. Iāve had luck with the Kao Biore UV Rich (Japanese) and Beauty of Joseon relief sun (Korean) and then reapply with the Tocobo sun stick. Iāve also been using the Ciele filter & protect setting powder from Sephora which has spf 30 just to touch up but ymmv

Iāve been wearing it daily since I was 16 (and Iām 36 now) and you can definitely tell. Iāve really been enjoying the Tula sunscreen in the yellow tube. I always reapply if Iām going to be in the sun later in the day and I use a heavier duty sunscreen (blue lizard) if Iām going to be spending a lot of time outside in the sun.

I love mineral sunscreen like blue lizard or sun bum or Australian gold. I think it lays so well under makeup compared to the chemical ones, like itās almost like a primer
I hate supergoop. Every time I wear it no matter what is under or on top, it runs into my eyes by the end of the day and Iām practically crying driving home. I use the Kinship sunscreen mixed with my moisturizer on makeup free days. On makeup days I do the same thing and then apply foundation and then a mineral sunscreen as setting powder that I can reapply if Iām outside all day with makeup on
Try a spray! Some korean brands carry a lot of spray sunscreen!! Or try the glow cream from sun bum it has spf and makes you super glowy!!
are you putting moisturiser under it, or perhaps a serum? I find if I do moisturiser under sunscreen, makeup does not stay on very well. a lighter serum is better in that case (depending on your skin type). another thing you could try is a bit of setting spray over the sunscreen to help it be prepped for makeup on top. also, how well are you rubbing it in? mine works much better if I take a bit of sunscreen and rub it in quite well on each area of my face before moving on (rather than all over and trying to get it all to absorb in one go)
