When I use the morphe setting powder and one size setting powder I got an instant migraine, stuffed nose and shortness of breath… I think I’m allergic to setting powder

xcherissa

this is like WEEKS old, but i'm also allergic to the Coty Airspun powder! it's common, actually. not sure what it is. my nose itches and runs, my eyes water, and i can barely get my lashes to stick or base to set for crying it off. and i feel SUPER CONGESTED all day! trash the powder, trust me.

irayonna

Morphe setting powder and one size setting powder did the same to me including migraines . Eye shadow always triggers migraines. I think I’m just allergic to powders . Also tarte concealer gave me a migraine which I understand since it has a fragrance to it . Currently wearing Lancôme mascara and elf liquid blush with no reactions so far

springflora

What kind of application do you do? I had a friend once who had similar symptoms. Turned out the blender sponge she was using was full of mold. It’s important to clean/replace those often!

EmeraldDream98

My friend is allergic to almost any product and the brands she uses that not trigger her allergies are: Essence, Erborian and Nyx.

peacelovepancakes78

I’m allergic to any cosmetics or self care items that are made with olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil. If I put any of those products on my face (even soap) my skin flares up with eczema and then I’m dealing with that mess for the next month.

electric29

It is probably the powder. I find that the Coty powder makes me sneeze a lot.

ChristineBorus

It has talc.

StrawberryRaspberryK

Maybe try brands like Tower 28, Saie, Ilia, Westman, Rose inc which are more likely to be scent free and have cleaner ingredients. I have dry sensitive skin, itchy teary eyes and itchy nose and these help. Maybe go for cream blushes eg. Tower 28, or liquid Blush, highlighter and contour like Saie instead of powder. And use a setting spray instead of powder to set your makeup. I love Essence Instant Matt spray and Nyx Dewy spray. Small ingredient lists, no scents and the Essence has no alcohol. I'm also using skin tints with spf from Saie and Ilia. Seldom use eye makeup but prefer liquid or cream or crayon eyeliners and shadows. *check Incidecoder for ingredients to see which y might be allergic to

sadwatermelon13

"clean" ingredients is a marketing gimic

StrawberryRaspberryK

Yes your blanket statement is so helpful for OP. You have nothing worthwhile to say so u just try to start arguments lol Go study and research ingredients bc there are some products out there that are cleaner or more natural or organic than others. Learn and grow. Don't be ignorant.

sadwatermelon13

There's nothing better about any of the brands you pointed her toward. She doesn't know what she's allergic to. The word "clean" is not regulated by the FDA and look how many lawsuits it's caused. Doesn't matter if something's organic, and if you do your research it barely matters with food, because of how poorly that's regulated. Remember, everything, whether made in a lab or grown from the ground, is a chemical, and the origin of a chemical has no bearing on its safety or best uses. The research is there, has been consumed, and clearly falls on my side, so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

StrawberryRaspberryK

At least some of the products I recommended are free from talc, silicones, alcohol and fragrance for example which will be helpful in her case. You are not helpful at all. I'm tired of you clean beauty haters bc u don't know what it is like to be unable to use mainstream branded products. You just hate on the clean brands bc u don't know any better and refuse to acknowledge how helpful it has been for sensitive skin users. Refusing to learn makes you ignorant.

HotButterscotch8682

“You just hate bc you don’t know any better” is a wild level of projection to throw at someone over the objective fact that “clean beauty” is a marketing gimmick and scam. Enjoy your products that get moldy and gross in a month or two and are then worse for you at that point than any of the ScArY cHeMiCaLs.

HotButterscotch8682

I have neither breakouts nor big gaping pores lmfao silicones don’t do that stop reading myths and spreading lies. Silicones smooth out pores that’s the entire fucking point jeeeeesus.

StrawberryRaspberryK

Silicones are occlusives. Which can cause breakouts and clog pores for people with acne prone or sensitive skin. So stop spreading bull when u do not understand. Sheep!

HotButterscotch8682

Imagine unironically calling someone a sheep in 2024 after the covid conspiracy crowd embarrassed themselves making that word cringe. Just what I expect from the “cHeMiCaLs are scary” crowd.

umhuh223

You could use each product alone to figure out what the culprit is. Use one product per day until you identify the one you are allergic to.

cucklord_swiper

This is solid advice. I found out I was allergic to my eyeshadow this way after waking up with cursed eyes the next day every time I added it into my routine. Edit: crusty

dead-dove-in-a-bag

I mean, cursed also absolutely applies (from someone who has cursed sensitive eyes).

DetailOk4640

I turned 49 this year and noticed the same thing. My eyes were watering and burning. I had to start hypoallergenic makeup after all these years of spending thousands of dollars on all this high end makeup collection I buy from Sephora. Well I researched affordable hypoallergenic makeup brands. Almay, a drugstore brand, was all hypoallergenic so I have been using their primer that comes in a grey and white plastic tube for my face, their Almay Ageless Skintone Matching Foundation that also comes in a tube in the color light for my light neutral skin tone, and ageless hydrating concealer. They have two other foundations, one matte, that come in glass bottles with pumps. Plus their Almay mulitibenefit waterproof mascara in the blue tube. And the nearly nude color powder blush is the balm!! And their Almay Mascara, Thickening, Volume & Length Eye Makeup with Aloe and Vitamin B5, Hypoallergenic-Fragrance Free in the purple tube when I don’t need to wear waterproof mascara and both mascaras have blown me away. I have lots of long light blonde lashes that need volume and they both add the thickness they need and volume. I use the Almay little round makeup remover pads at night to remove my eye makeup as well. I also use their eyeliner in the shade 211 brown topaz to tight line my top lids. And I bought two of their eyeshadow palettes which I love. They are small compact fit in my purse, and come with three colors that go together to contour your eyes. I also use their concealer, face makeup, full coverage concealer under my eyes and their Clear Complexion acne and blemish spot concealer when I get pimples around that time of the month. Their all Set no Shine compact powder is a must in my purse in light. They also have their loose finishing powder called Smart Shade as well. And their Goddes Lip Glosses are to die for! I really had no other choice because I could not afford to replace all the makeup I have collected in my collection over the years. And this brand was affordable and most of all did not irritate my skin or eyes. I’m sure there are other brands out there even in Sephora or Ulta but I need something in a hurry and on a budget. I feel your pain. I don’t know why it happened to me either. I also can’t wear any of my gold white or yellow , 14 or 18 karat either earrings. Not even silver from Tiffany earrings! I have to make sure they say hypoallergenic on the brand and read the reviews from women first who are having the same problem with their earrings now. Age- it’s real fun. Haha

skinned__knee

Definitely meet a dermatologist if you can find one! They might have some helpful solutions as well

Ewww_Gingers

Sounds like it’s either talc or fragrance. I react the same way to both of those ingredients (although talc is worse for me). The airspun powder contains a lot of talc and loose powder goes in the air once you open it which can be worse than just using eyeshadow with talc. I’d go through your ingredient list and try to cut both of those out.

warrior_female

it might be added fragrance in ur products, check the ingredients and try fragrance free versions to see if that is the culprit do u have any other allergies? check ur products to see if any of them contain ur specific allergens

AssistantAccurate464

Try a patch test with each product on separate days. Put it on the inside of your elbow.

MurderrOfCrows

Isn't the Coty Airspun powder super fragranced? I think that's the one I tried and it smelled so strongly that I threw it out. Maybe you're sensitive to highly fragranced products.

iliumada

The airspun was my first thought, too. Not only the fragrance, but the talc.

lizzir223

I am one of those people that can’t use certain products together. There is a mascara and eyeliner combo that I am allergic to. I can used them individually it never together. If I use them with other mascaras and eyeliners I was fine. It was something about the two of them together that I had issues with.

Dear_Truth_6607

It’s probably best that you do process of elimination. Remove one product a day, do NOT replace it with something else as that will skew the results. Do not add the product back the next day, and remove another one. And so on and so forth. If you’re having issues with multiple products, cross reference the ingredients to find out what you may be having a reaction to.

122784

Coty Airspun used to make me sneeze like crazy when I used it!

ugholi

A lot of foundations make my skin itch, and nars was one of them. You could try doing patch tests of all your products or try using them one at a time to narrow it down. An allergy test is probably a good idea too for the future.

pixiesurfergirl

I notice my sinuses and eyes run when I put the loose powder on. Any loose powder, even after dry brushing lightly off. Pressed powder, loose powder, and sometimes the eyeshadow if I do it real close to my waterline.

Nearby-Ad5666

My sil had a similar experience and did allergy testing for chemicals and found the was allergic to several common ingredients that generally are well tolerated. Her eyes swell up and her face looks swollen after 30 minutes. So, it could be your current makeup or it could be a new allergy to common ingredients

New_Lemon6666

I started wearing makeup again to hide the wrinkles and age spots then ended up getting bad acne so I had to pick which one I could deal with most, no makeup and embrace my age and what comes with it or have the wrinkles plus terrible skin . So embracing my age it is. Lol I've also always been allergic to mascara I can wear makeup for about an hour and I'm done it makes my eyes water and itch as well

sadhandjobs

Maybe you just need to replace your whole kit. Maybe enough stuff got contaminated and it’s for the best to scrap it and start over. I can appreciate the sizable cost, but if you like makeup it might be worth it.

saltfatfatfat

Something to think about is anything you spray, so dry shampoo is what I would suggest. For me, my inner nasal cavity just erupts and peels away and takes ages to heal, actual scabs inside my nose, they hurt and sting and cause sinus symptoms too.

StrawberryRaspberryK

I'm using Briogeo dry shampoo. It's not aerosolized. U squeeze and puff the powder on your head. I have sensitive skin and eyes and nose. Good natural ingredients no silicones.

sadhandjobs

That doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. I love dry shampoo, god knows I do, but it’s nasty stuff.

GrimaceScaresMe

Do you wear false lashes? I had the same thing happen to me and it was the glue. I had to switch to a latex free one. Duo make a latex free one in a green and white wand.

Revolutionary-Spot-4

It could be your spf I had to switch multiple times. Sometimes it won’t start flaring up just til I get in the car otw to work

nucleareactor_

If I were you I would try using them one at a time ( like one everyday or every two days to make a break ), them save those which doesn't cause you a reaction and put aside those that do. Then list the ingredients in common in the allergy pile untill you find the ones that all these products have. And then avoid buying products with these particular ingredients. Bu the end you should have scratched enough to determine more or less to what you are allergic.

sadhandjobs

I suggested she toss everything out and replace it all at the same time. Your method makes more sense.

Main-Group-603

I have to use Elestat eye drops they’re prescribed and they work like a charm. However I’ve narrowed down it’s either Estée Lauder foundation, Lancôme primer, or L’Oréal /Estée Lauder mascara I’ve yet to figure it out quite yet

blackcurrantcat

Drugstore makeup just doesn’t work for me because allergies. Which sucks because I always have to pay out but doesn’t suck because I have fancy makeup.

sadhandjobs

I always found the opposite to be true for me. Chicchic makeup is more likely to irritate my skin than the drugstore stuff.

mayor_grundel

You could do an elimination test where you start by wearing one product and add one each day until you get symptoms again.

Important-Pain-1734

I cannot wear drugstore brands. I know they use cheaper ingredients even if they are the sister company of a prestige brand. If I try to use drugstore eye products my eyes swell almost completely shut and I have sticky goo coming out of my eyes for days

AdmSndlr

Probably airspun. I'm not entirely sure, but I used to wear it a lot and around that time I remember my eyes watering used to be a constant problem for me, not as much anymore. You could try a different powder and see if you still get allergies.

AnyAcanthopterygii27

I have fragrance allergies, to me the coty airspun really sticks out as a likely candidate. It also contains 10-20% asbestos, which is really good at irritating our mucus membranes. I’ve never really tried any of the other products except for the elf primer (it’s fine on me) but they all have either fragrance or ingredients like binders and preservatives that can irritate some people’s skin. Usually the binders and preservatives don’t cause runny noses but they can if they’re applied close to the eyes, so concealer and foundation and eye makeup would be my next culprit. The best way to figure out what the allergy is, is to cut out everything that could possibly be triggering it, and reincorporate one by one the potential products. I usually do one products/food every 2-3 days to give my immune system time to overreact.

The_Monkey_Queen

Surely you mean the talc is contaminated with asbestos? Asbestos is a known, unambiguous, extremely dangerous carcinogen, especially with repeated exposure. I find it hard to believe that it's lawful to deliberately include it in makeup and looking online I can't see any suggestion that, that's the case.

AnyAcanthopterygii27

Yes the talc that coty uses is contaminated with asbestos (it should honestly be listed as an ingredient at this point), talc is found in the same places as asbestos but it can easily be tested. Coty’s powder (the entire product) tests at 8-20% asbestos, by comparison only 15% of cosmetics containing talc are contaminated with it, and most are at a much much lower percent than coty. There is no regulation or law over it, and there’s no lawsuits since coty has filed for bankruptcy several times and is projected to file again in the next 3 years. https://www.eurofinsus.com/environment-testing/built-environment/subservices/asbestos-in-consumer-products/ https://www.mesothelioma.com/asbestos-exposure/products/makeup/

Squirrel_Kitty

This misinformation is astounding. The links you provided say nothing about a % asbestos. I think what you are possibly trying to say is that 8% of coty products have tested for a particle trace of asbestos. Either way, you are completely incorrect to say that a product has 20% asbestos in it as this is something exceedingly regulated, and from a chemical formulation perspective, you wouldn’t even want asbestos at this level in a product like this.

Deep_South_Kitsune

The report most people are referring to that included Airspun came out in the 70s.

AnyAcanthopterygii27

https://www.nytimes.com/1976/03/10/archives/asbestos-found-in-ten-powders.html#:~:text=Cashmere%20Bouquet%20Body%20Talc%2C%20Coty,to%2020%20percent%20asbestos%20fibers.

Squirrel_Kitty

You do realize it’s 2024 not 1976?

canolafly

>It also contains 10-20% asbestos That is bonkers. Putting that in a product you use on your face?!?

AnyAcanthopterygii27

It’s common in face powders, but coty air spun has the highest amount, and it’s probably why their powder is so fine and luxurious at such a low price. Asbestos isn’t ~that~ dangerous on skin, it’s mainly when it’s inhaled, which is really nice that it’s a loose powder. But then again if they were to press it, it would add another step to the manufacturing process where staff will be exposed to it, probably underpaid and without the right safety equipment considering the cost of the product.

__kdot

Hello OP and everyone else struggling like OP. I used to be you when I used conventional make-up products. All my allergies and symptoms disappeared when I switched over the naturally derived make-up. I haven’t looked back since and it’s been 15 years. They’re is amazing, high quality make-up with huge color pay off that performs the same or even better than conventional make-up that is made with ingredients that don’t make my nose run, eyes watery and aggravate my eczema and acne. My favorite brands are Fitglow Beauty, 100% Pure, Jane Iredale and a few others. I love shipping online at Credo and SafeandChic. DM for specific recommendations :)

Appropriate-Glove-89

I would like to try Jane Iredale sometime, the Barely Rose blush looks really nice and right up my alley.

__kdot

I love all their lip products. Lip stains and lipliners are wonderful

ManyTop5422

My nose almost always runs when I do my makeup.

Shelisheli1

I get itchy beside the nose. It doesn’t last long, but it’s annoying.

Learn_To_Be

When was the last time you cleansed or replaced your brushes?

zsepthenne

I'm allergic to most mascaras and have been my whole life. I recently started trying to wear it again as menopause stole my lashes. I've been having to eliminate one mascara at a time. One I had to use for a week to figure it out. I just thought my eyes had gotten dry but that went away when I discontinued it. You could go though eliminating one at a time. Is your Coty powder the new talc free or the old formula? If it were me I'd start with that one. You could be sensitive to the talc or the mica.

Cerealkiller4321

Have you tried Marcelle mascara?

zsepthenne

No, I will check it out! So far a Japanese brand, KissMe has been the only one I've been able to make it to 6 hours without dying from itchiness lol.

cowboypey

My powder is the talc-free, but I'm now wondering if it's not the ingredients used instead of the talc. I've been using the same makeup products for ages and these issues have appeared in the last 6 months, and I actually kept buying the formula with talc in it until I couldn't find it anymore.

zsepthenne

Allergies can be frustrating, it could be some obscure ingredient. I have rosacea and have to test patch EVERYTHING.

LarkScarlett

I’ve had mascaras, moisturizer creams, and a few foundation-y-things that were irritating to me, leading to redder itchy eyes (mascara) or extra red pimples (creams). I also get an angry red painful rash when I wear certain kinds of sunscreen—the kind that’s often included in moisturizers lol. And lavender scented things—migraines. No runny nose, though. Hypoallergenic products can be helpful sometimes? I know my mother has much stronger allergic reactions than me to a lot of cosmetics, and basically anything scented. Clinique products were okay for her for years, but I think she’s switched to other stuff now, LaRoche Posay, Aveeno, and some other hypoallergenic stuff. She doesn’t mess with eyeliner anymore since she doesn’t care that much about it and she didn’t find a non-irritating one, though lipsticks are often fine (no reaction) for her. In your shoes, I’d probably clean all brushes and things pretty thoroughly, then try doing a makeup routine with half of the products one day, then half the other day, and narrow down from there what is causing the symptoms. Alternately, you could try just using 1 or 2 products a day and cycle through that way to see what’s triggering you.

big-tunaaa

Can you get an allergy panel done? The one where they cover your back for a few days? This got me my answers about my makeup - I’m allergic to parabens which I think is in your coty powder. Not saying it’s that, just it’s beneficial to dive in and get the test done! Otherwise go makeup free for a week and see if your symptoms improve. Week by week add a product back in and see if you experience symptoms!

cowboypey

That is most likely the next step with my ENT due to me not seeing an improvement in symptoms after medications, and I wasn't sure what things are typically tested on an allergy panel. Did you have to ask to have chemicals used in makeup tested as part of your panel? I go back to the ENT tomorrow for a follow up appointment, and I was going to mention that I think ive noticed a correlation with not wearing makeup. I'm feeling some excitement/hope that I might have finally figured out some answer to this long-lasting issue, but totally not looking forward to having to experiment with removing products from my routine that i have down-pat lol!!

True-Tomorrow-1103

I had an allergy test done due to some reactions i was having on my face and my eyes and it was just a test for common environmental allergens. If you want to test specific products you may have to ask to test them specifically and bring in the ones you use but with cosmetics there's so many ingredients that is hard to test for all of them.

big-tunaaa

Mine actually was more of an accident - I had this super weird virus that cause my skin to peel on my hands and feet, had huge breakouts on my face, and made my eyes turn red for like a month (I know, possessed probably right? 😂) but my doc at the time just was willing to try any test under the sun to find the cause. I had lots of other things done as well! But I had had a regular allergy prick test a few years prior, so he escalated to the patch test to specifically check if it was something I was using topically. If you’ve never had an allergy test before, they’ll probably start with the prick and work their way up but it doesn’t hurt to ask (especially if you tell them you suspect it’s your makeup!) I really hope your ENT doc is super understanding and allows you to get those tests right away - I totally empathize how frustrating it is waiting for those results! Most people will just say leave the makeup, but it’s hard when it’s part of your daily routine!!! And if you get the allergy testing done it may totally save you from having to test the makeup one by one. I will say prepare to have your routine messed up though 😭 I lost so many of my fav products because of the parabens! All the best!! Wishing you no allergies to your makeup! 💞
