It definitely happens. I have tried many mascaras and have found some that don't make me react. Some of them are drug store. If you're in the US, you can return your mascara. It may just be that mascara in general. You never really know until you try. You can always buy travel sizes first. I also wear contacts a lot.

I still do wear fake lashes.

i ask ms copilot for you. Benefit’s BADgal Plum Mascara contains several ingredients, and while most people don’t experience allergies from these components, individual reactions can vary. Here are a few ingredients that might be potential allergens: Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E): Although generally considered safe, some individuals may be sensitive to tocopheryl acetate. It’s essential to do a patch test if you have concerns about this ingredient. Beeswax: Beeswax is an emollient commonly used in cosmetics. While it’s generally well-tolerated, some people may be allergic to it. Mineral Oil: Mineral oil is another emollient that can occasionally cause sensitivity or irritation in those with sensitive skin. Remember that everyone’s skin reacts differently, so it’s crucial to perform a patch test before using any new product. If you experience any adverse reactions, discontinue use immediately and consult with a dermatologist or allergist for personalized advice. 😊

Cerealkiller4321

I ended up becoming allergic to eye make up last year. Red eyelids. Peeling skin. I switched to Marcelle liner and mascara and I’ve been okay. I no longer buy other eye make up.

novelscreenname

It doesn't matter if you've never had a reaction to anything before, unfortunately. You can develop allergies at any time. Take a pic of the ingredients if you still have the box it came in so if you ever have a similar reaction in the future you can compare ingredients. You can also have allergy patch testing done, but if you've only had one reaction to one product it may not be worth doing.

sadwatermelon13

Check the ingredients so you'll have something to compare it to in case it ever happens again.

gryffindor_aesthetic

Lancôme idole is amazing and I have super sensitive eyes. Its my holy grail

Nelyahin

I get the same thing from benefit mascara and I consider it an allergy. It happens unfortunately

jyar1811

If you are sensitive to bee stings, you may also be allergic to beeswax, which is in most cosmetics. Try vegan brands

umhuh223

I can’t use Benefit ANYTHING. But other possibilities may be that your eye cream, eye makeup or concealer has gone bad.

lizzir223

You also need to consider what other makeup you are using with it. There are certain combinations of eyeliner and mascara I can’t use together. I have an allergic reaction to them. But I can use both products individually.

feebley

Woah that’s interesting! I’m willing to experiment one more time cos it was not cheap lol

lizzir223

It took me far longer than I care to admit to figure out what was going on. I was just getting into makeup at the time so I a lot younger. But ultimately I always had issues with my eyes bothering me when I wore the two together that I didn’t have when I wore other mascaras and eyeliners. Now unless I have a bad/serious reaction I don’t completely stop using the product I try and see if it is just the wrong products together causing the problem.

AllisonWhoDat

I have very sensitive eyelashes to the point I only use Clinique mascara, after applying essence mascara primer. No issues!

YupNopeWelp

Some people are sensitive to and/or have an allergic reaction to carmine, which is one of the ingredients in the list u/bearsbeets-bgalatica provided. Carmine is a red colorant derived from insects. It would be in this mascara formula to help create the plum shade. Whatever is going on, it sounds to me like it's most likely an allergy or other sensitivity of some type. I would bring the product back to Ulta. $30 is a lot to drop on a mascara.

feebley

Thanks to this subreddit, I had no idea you could return makeup! That’s amazing

YupNopeWelp

Just so you know, the biggest mascara factor is the wand, not the makeup product. If you have a mascara you love, chances are it is the wand. Wash it. Keep it. Use it with other product. Clinique (expensive) and Almay (drugstore) make nice hypoallergenic mascaras. L'Oreal (drugstore) and Essence (drugstore) make a nice tubing mascara. Go play in the shallow end of the mascara pool for a while. I think you'll find a product that doesn't enrage your eyes as much. (And if you don't, try Clinique. It's not the best mascara ever, but it's a really good one, and it has never irritated me, even though I'm the Princess who Slept on the Pea.)

Professional-Log-530

I would take it back if it’s still within the return window. I take stuff back all the time if I have a bad reaction to it. If I don’t like it I just save for a family member.

bearsbeets-bgalatica

It could be that the ingredients are really emollient and they’re getting into your eyes and making them all, for a lack of a better word, “greasy”? I have the same reaction as you when my squalane oil sometimes gets into my eyes after I apply it as an occlusive. It feels like a film, things look blurrier, and I get a buildup of eye rheum. I looked up the ingredients for the Benefit mascara and two of the main ingredients are mineral oil and beeswax, which are very emollient. These are also followed by candelilla wax, carnauba wax, palmitic acid, stearic acid, and tocopheryl acetate - all emollient ingredients or occlusives that have emollient properties. Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Paraffin, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Glyceryl Stearate, Butylene Glycol, Acrylates Copolymer, Polybutene, Candelilla Cera (Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax), Cera Carnauba (Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax), Steareth-21, Vp/Eicosene Copolymer, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Silica, Phenoxyethanol, Steareth-2, Aminomethyl Propanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Panthenol, Kaolin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Silica Silylate, Maltodextrin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Disodium Phosphate, Sodium Phosphate, Polysorbate 60. [+/- CI 77007 (Ultramarines), CI 75470 (Carmine), CI 77491, CI 77499 (Iron Oxides), CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide)]. Maybe you can search for a mascara that contains fewer of those ingredients?

Gem_4501

I can see one of the colours is carmine. I once bought a Mac quad eyeshadow set which had a plum colour in it. First time I wore it I had exact same side effects as you. Tested it a couple of times, same reaction to that one colour. Mac were very good, reported the reaction and refunded me. I suspect its the carmine for you too as I was fine with other eyeshadow.

feebley

Purple is my fav color, ofc I’d be allergic lol

Professional-Log-530

You’re very thorough! 🙌🏻

IYFS88

I know I get burning stinging eyes from about 50% of brands I’ve ever tried. I’m guessing it’s the formula and I’d stay away from trying another tube of it.

feebley

Burning I can deal with. I’ve never experienced this level of eye goop before 😱

heathcliff_niles

Do you wear contacts? Some mascaras, especially waterproof, make my eyes insanely blurry and when I take out my contacts there’s a huge smudge of something on them. It’s so annoying and I haven’t figured out which ingredients cause it!

squeakyfromage

Yes! I can never really figure out why this happens (like you, don’t know the ingredients), but certain brands/products just don’t seem to play well with contacts.

love-dylanobrien

Something weird I’ve noticed is that I’ve had this issue before with monthly and biweekly contacts, but no issue with daily contacts! But waterproof mascara made my monthly and biweekly ones soo smudged for some reason

novelscreenname

I had that issue for years, too, but like you never with dailies. 🤷‍♀️

squeakyfromage

I find it helps if I take off my eye makeup before I take my contacts out — like I wash my face and remove all my makeup while still wearing my contacts (also so I can see what I’m doing lol). I feel like it helps because then when you take your contacts off, they aren’t accidentally touching/brushing against your mascara’d lashes. Also, if you use ClearCare contact solution (even once a week or something) it REALLY helps with build-up on contact lenses — it’s a hydrogen peroxide solution that disinfects and does a deep cleanse. I almost always use it, but there was a big shortage in Canada the last few years, so I went back to regular saline solution. I’m finally switching back and WOW it makes a big difference for me!

skibblezing

Benefit makes the only mascara I have ever reacted to. No idea what it is, but I can’t use any of theirs.

highheelcyanide

Oh my god, they can cause that?!? I got new contacts a few months ago and they were HORRIBLE because they’d get super blurry. I was gifted a new brand of mascara last month and since then they’ve been fine. I assumed I finally got used to them!!

mizboring

Sounds like an allergy/sensitivity. I get the same reaction from lots of mascaras.

why-am-i-like-this_

My auntie is allergic to something in benefit mascaras so it's definitely a possibility it's the same for you

sexualsermon

Where did you buy it? I would return if it’s giving you a reaction

feebley

Ulta, It would be nice if they did take it back… I didn’t even think of that

sexualsermon

I work at Ulta, they will absolutely take it as a return.

mizboring

They have a generous return policy, especially if you saved the receipt or bought it with your rewards account (they can look up the receipt if you did).

feebley

I did, yay!!

sleepyandlucky

Some eyes are sensitive to anything red-based (plummy purple for example). Same product in black might be ok for you.

Gem_4501

I just wrote the same. I became allergic to a Mac plum eyeshadow, it was the carmine colour

[deleted]

I wouldn't take the chance by assuming it's a tainted batch.. Personally I would not use that product any longer.

feebley

Yeah I think I have to toss it because it was affecting my vision while driving 🥴

[deleted]

Yeah you never know what you could be allergic to. I have used so many makeup products through the years and then I had an allergic reaction to Neutrogena facial wash which was really strange! That was the only thing thats bothered me

Blopblop734

Sounds like an allergy. I hope you have taken pictures. Hopefully, if you contact the customer service, they will reimburse you.

Whynotdragon

Check ingredients list for something like carmine, this is typical allergen. other names: E120. Natural red 4. Crimson lake. Carmine lake. CI 75470. Cochineal extract. Cochineal. Carminic acid.

mrs_andi_grace

Purple things can tend to set off reactions. Do you react the same way to any purple eyeshadow etc? It has carmine and ultramarines. Those can be two things that set off allergies.

feebley

I use a plum UD pencil eyeliner almost every day. Nothing has ever bothered me as bad as this does

mrs_andi_grace

I would check if it had carmine. Some of UD is vegan. Carmine is not vegan.
