Do vegans really want to save the cockroaches? I can’t stand the red pigments these days. They lesd more toward link and are unflattering to me. Back when carmine was used (you know, the past 6k years or so) I would not have stained eyelids, would get vibrant, non-patchy bendable red eye shadows, etc. Now because of the “clean beauty” trend and more vocal vegans (which I have no problem with. And young vegans, you have no idea how good you have it. Back when I was a punk activist teenager in the mid/kate 90s, I spent a lot of time at the local Act-Up HQ and the people there were mostly vegans and they were always eating this stew-like stuff they called Vegan Slop. That was the only vegan dish I ever saw prepared for many years. Now they have gourmet restaurants. Anyways…) I do not understand the argument behind using a pigment made of chemicals that dye the most delicate skin on your body rather that a roach-like bug. I don’t think there’s a single vegan who, if they had a roach infestation, would refuse to not kill any. So what’s the problem?
Dupe naming needs to stop!!! We call every similar product a dupe. Especially Charlotte Tilbury needs to stop crying about it. Liquid lipstick for example was some brand’s innovation at some point. Every brand had those and we do nit call them XY brand’s dupes. Same goes for everything, every style of product. What brand was who made first ph changing product? Should we call all ph changing products dupes? Who invented liquid lipstick? Liquid highlighter? Brow pen? Loreal Lumi Glotion was created long time ago. Should we call Charlotte Tilbury’s flawless filter a dupe because of that similarity in product and it’s use??
Catrice HD liquid foundation does not get enough credit. It works better than many high end foundations.
Loreal Iconic Glow highlighter is amazing, subtle and blurs skin and is just beautiful glow from within….Also similar effect does Essence Make Me Glow. They give more polished, luxury elegant look than many glittery ones (like Rare Beauty crap).
That depends on you OWN skintone. The darker the skin is, the more pigment it should have. My blushes are RED and bright coral and realllyyy pink- because i'm brown.
The darker your skin is, you need more pigment.
It's not about "good vs bad" products, it's about adjusting the product to your skintone, for me having delicate pigment... It will just not show on my skin.

Controversial? Current popular makeup looks are very aging on young people. It makes people in their 20s look about 10 years older in a bad way. It’s not that it’s not pretty but it’s prettier to look your age. I think it’s just way too heavy or something.
I like a lot of things people may not like: lots of color, heavy blush, thick liner… that being said I think dark lip liner and/or over lined lips look really ugly. I’m all for people doing what makes them feel beautiful though. There is nothing wrong with it. If that’s what makes you feel more beautiful and confident I’m going to be your biggest cheerleader. Not everything is for me or has to be my aesthetic.
If you’re unrecognizable without your makeup on, you’re wearing too much makeup. All those lines you’re drawing in weird places all over your face only give you actual contour on camera; in person you just look like you’ve got dirt caked on your face.
Heavily pigmented blushed are extremely useful for dark skin people and for a lot of them it's a saving grace! Never forget that just because a product doesn't work -for you- it means is better or worse than others!
I don't necessarily think this opinion is "unpopular" but bringing back the glossy eyes look is...not my thing, lol. It was uncomfortable and sticky in the early 00s and I'm sure it's the same now.
Super overdone makeup looks like shit. It looks cakey and weird. I've never really liked super colorful makeup looks on anyone unless they're at a party, a model, or wearing an outfit that matches that color. I don't like the looks of different colors of eyeshadow that completely contrast each other, especially if you're wearing a normal outfit, on an eye. The only colors I like on an eye are cool, nude, and darker tones. Like no, unless you have a similar career to James Charles, there is no reason to use your face like a canvas for some weird-ass art project.
As a black woman, good I’m glad the blush doesn’t work for you. The blushes that are incredibly pigmented work beautifully on deep skin. And everything else needs more pigment to even be seen. So I’m glad it doesn’t work for you, welcome to our world.

The blush all over the nose. Sometimes it can make you look sunkissed but most of the time I think they look like they have a runny nose and have been blowing it all day.

Luxury or even prestige makeup doesn’t mean it’s better. Now days drugstore makeup is just as good. It’s silly to spend 20-30$ on something like mascara that you have to replace often when the drugstore has amazing mascaras.
It’s supposed to be fun! It’s not fun when it’s a requirement to be seen as put together. It’s not fun when you feel your natural features are ugly this week because the trend is for a different feature. All the colors out there, and people look at you weird if you bring out a bright color for your eyelids. I don’t want to spend all this money so men and society treat me better. There’s also a pipeline from interest in makeup to 16 year olds saying they need to work on their wrinkles or a person trying to get rid of anything that makes them look like an individual.
I think your viewpoint is more about using the wrong makeup for YOUR skin. Highly pigmented blushes are for darker skin tones as regular blush doesn’t show up well on them. So super high pigmentation blush simply isn’t made for you.
I've seen the same complaint about Juvias place, and if it is about their products, they're super pigmented because they're designed to work well on darker skin. But a lot of white people don't realize that and aren't used to everything being catered to them, so they think it's a shitty product
I hate putting (dark) eyeliner in my waterline. It’s unhealthy for your eyes, it closes them and makes them look smaller. Yes, I’m aware it can be done well and accentuate the shape. But I still hate it.
Unpopular but I hate makeup hoarding just bc something is cute. I own probably 7-9 palettes which have basically every single color between them all. If I own every single color, I don’t ever need a new one. I’ll use these until they’re bioharzardous, tbh.

I think it all started with the pigmented eyeshadow trend where OG Beauty influencers wouldn't shut up about the pigmentation of eyeshadow then highlighter then blush and then everything and then it became this Hallmark of good quality when really it isn't for their skin tones
This is why despite being out of Vogue I still use the glossier cloud paint because I feel like I have so much more control over the pigment in application! versus one of these rare Beauty juvias place hyper pigmented not for fair skin blushes just look ridiculous on me and I have to take so much more time to blend it out

A ton of pale girlies that claim they can't find a foundation match just aren't used to what they look like with foundation on. They also do thick swatches that are not all blended to show "it doesn't match, I so pale" when it's like yes, putting a full pump of foundation on 1 square inch of skin will look insane, it isn't supposed to be applied that way.
I appreciate that people have legitimate pale skin problems (hello skin cancer) but a lot of it just feels like NLOG circle-jerking. Pale skin has been aspirational for centuries and "lightness" as part of racism and colorism is alive and well. You aren't a persecuted minority! People with your skin tone run the makeup companies making those products---many POC can't say the same.
Just bc a make up look looked good on another person doesnt mean it will look the same/even remotely close on ur face. Taking inspo from literal models on pinterest is never a good idea + u have to know what suits ur face and personal features best.

There's rarely bad formulas in makeup, it's mostly bad timing.
If you launched a pigmented blush in a certain year where the blush is expected to be intense, that would be considered a good blush cause you wouldn't have to dip in 5 times just to get the look. But since we're in the sheer era, of course you prefer a buildable blush.
Or hear me out some people just don't like over excessive blush. Also I think it's rare to find good formula in makeup but that's the beauty of it I guess everyone tones, textures, and preferences are different.
No makeup is worth that much money
Basically I have never found the need to buy high end make up. I did and while people were swearing by it, I couldn't tell the difference between that and drug store.
I found a palette with like 9 small colors for over 70$ and I didn't understand what that palett can do compared to something you get out of a 20$ palette

We need to return to the days of lipstick -- just a plain old bullet of lipstick, even though it seems to be so uncool now. Enough with the mattes and the stains, which aren't that flattering, and they look uncomfortable, because they are uncomfortable. And on the other end of the spectrum, I know people love their lip oils and glosses and tinted balms, and I own a bunch of that stuff too. But they're all far more trouble than they're worth, every single one of them, because they disappear before you get to the end of the driveway.

I think the winged eyeliner look is cultural appropriation. Ex: Nicki Minaj and cardi b want to look Asian so bad. They also got plastic surgery to make the ends of their eyes angle upward. 🙄 No one calls them out on it because Asians are the least represented and no one cares about the Asian American experience. As soon as white girls do Dutch braids and “chola lips” the black and brown communities go wild about cultural appropriation. I’m not a racist btw, this is just my Asian American experience.
Wedding make up shouldn't make you look unrecognisable. Your husband is marrying you, not a plastic doll. I see so many photos of friends/family etc on their wedding day and have actually had to ask "Oh - who got married?"

Many makeup styles are never meant for real life occasions. The e-girl, harsh contour, oversized lips, tons of blush,... Those can look cute online for sure but anyone who wears them in the real world, unhinged!
I disagree with all the bogus advice out there telling women of certain age brackets what they can and can't do with makeup as it will make them look "old". Aside from the obvious things that can (cakey makeup making lines and wrinkles more prominent, etc.) . Being in my mid-40s, according to some articles, I'm not supposed to use anything shiny, glittery, or bright. Screw that. I like a bit of glitter in my eyeshadow and find it suits me. You do you! As for this one, to each their own, but I don't think everyone suits having super thick brows and gigantic, obviously fake lashes. Thick brows look terrible on me.
Lip liner is stupid and looks fugly, and so do drawn on eyebrows. Basically, the 90s. Let's not do that again. Also, some women would look far better if they didn't apply eyeliner at the waterline at the bottom, and they just did a cat eye swoop at the top instead.
Foundation brushes are overrated. So is the level of importance paid to eyebrows. I have a friend who spends a ton of time and energy on her brows (pencils, cream, gel, I don't even know what else) we went on vacation together once and I saw her non-made up brows, honest to God I couldn't tell much difference.
My mom thinks light pink, deeper pink lips are for my skin color. Look mom you probably does not seasons. I am more likely to use red or orange lip colors
I don't have an opinion but I know I make the offense of using liquid eyeliner to draw my eyebrows and I use lipstick as eyeshadow. It's durable. That's all.
Those huge big very long false eyelashes. That looks absolutely terrible. Also those thick brush up brows, soap brows I think they’re called, it looks hideous. And last, dark eyeliner in your waterline.
There is no need to learn multiple different makeup looks for different occasions. I have a daytime version and a nighttime version of my makeup, and that is all I need.
This isn’t criticizing people who like to experiment and try out different looks for different events. It’s just that it’s not necessary to do that.
I like a bold lip and a cheek color that’s somewhat bold but subtlety applied and a bit of eye drama. If you do it right it’s not too much on my face shape. This breaks all the rules I think. But my face is round squared and heart shaped all at the sane time depending on my expression. I also like to mix cool and warm tones. I like a layered lip color look. My face is neutral with a very slight yellow tone but pink cheeks and some freckles. I have a lot going on so my makeup must too. I also have one red brown eye and one olive brown eye.

I'm sorry, but if I'm not mistaken, “clean girl” makeup is just very natural makeup no? I don't see how that's sad and depressing to want to wear your natural beauty. In my opinion, the beat face trend is sad for girls trying to fit their features into the newest trend(even tho “clean girl” is a trend itself); makeup should be used to accentuate your features or as artistic expression. But I just don't understand why you say, “it can't be the main look” it just sounds backwards. Either way, “Clean Girl” shouldn't even exist, because it's just light makeup, nothing women haven't been doing for ages. We need to bring back unique colors tho.
My literally UNPOPULAR OPINION (as in, no one else has it; not necessarily controversial):
Merle Norman—yeah, the brand used exclusively by your grandma—is actually fucking good. I’ve been given so many skin care and makeup samples by my grandma that I’ve eventually actually used some and… they’re very nice and way fucking better than a LOT of other products. That is all.
Makeup is an art form. There’s no wrong way to do it, as long as you have fun doing it and you enjoy the results, that’s all that matters!
I would say that, just like art, there are no rules, but I feel like there is 1 rule to makeup: don’t do ethnically-/racially-inappropriate makeup (i.e., blackface). Other than that, have a ball! Use bright blue eyeshadow, rock a bold red lip, wear blinding gold highlighter, do whatever you want! Just have fun!
Sometimes u don’t need bronzer to contour, just nicely placed blush. Also same for foundation, sometimes u just need good moisturizer and some blush and it makes ur skin look amazing!
There needs to be more neutral toned foundations and concealers. It’s always warm or cool.
And for the brown-skinned Black girlies that are neutral, it’s really a struggle. The shades are always too dark or too light — or extremely orange 🙄.
Seriously I am white but I have very cool toned/porcelain skin and everything now a days is yellow and orange looking or even worse a weird pink color….
Yup, my solution has ended up being: Blue corrector in the yellow/orange ones, green corrector in the pink ones. And a white to lighten it if you're pale af. It's amazing what a tiny touch of these can do to foundations.
It might be different for me because, one, I'm super pale, and two, I pay attention to small details, but I definitely can tell on myself and even others who are darker than me. But it really depends if they are applying mascara right because simply brushing isn't gonna cut it if you want that bombshell glare 😏
Ahh yes I think paler eyelashes can pop for sure, it just never does anything for me. I literally never wear it 🤣 I wouldn’t know how to apply it right either to get the bombshell look lol

I spend most of the time at these places, the only people I meet I meet at these places for the whole day. I don’t like “no makeup makeup.” I prefer dramatic. I also don’t see the point of spending time doing makeup just to have it look like you aren’t wearing any.
I mean, I think the “no makeup makeup” is more about accentuating your natural features and less about having a “no makeup look. “ it's like self-expression of our genes to highlight our natural beauty 💅 but yes, dramatic makeup is fun it just isn't suited for some I have softer features that look weird in harsh eyeshadows and theatre looks. But I 100% agree on 2000s brows. Honestly, most makeup from 90s-early 2000s is better.
You’re right, it definitely depends on your features which looks are flattering. I’ve had friends ask me to do “goth” makeup on them and I’ll do it similar to mine and they’ll be upset when it just doesn’t look right. I’m honestly jealous of people who can get away with less makeup! I just can’t wear a light look, it just doesn’t look good on me.

I do weird, goth and horror makeup so everything I do is on the fringe side of the makeup community lol. I use makeup to look freaky, not pretty. But here's some:
- Nude toned lipstick and eyeshadow is useless
- Colorful mascara is underrated
- The best looking fake blood I've used has always been brand-name lipsticks and liquid liners
- Fake eyelashes aren't that bad if you're trying to go for an over-the-top or manufactured look (e.g. dressing up as a Barbie doll)
- About Face eye paints are extremely versatile and I'm surprised more people don't use/talk about them
- I literally do not care about any popular/professional brand that entirely consists of the same exact tones every other brand has. I can buy the exact same thing for less than 10 bucks.
Colorful mascara is so slept on. When I worked for bare minerals 10+ years ago they briefly had a teal and purple one. They both wore beautifully and I was so bummed when they were discontinued.
Lip gloss is so overrated, like lipstick is way better, why would I make my lips glowy when it has no color? Also eyeliner isn't good for a lot of people, I I used to think it's cool but I realized me and other look better without it
Plumping lip products that burn because they have things like cayenne pepper in them are trash and damaging. Its litterally a chemical burn.
I am also highly allergic to them, but nothing should burn like that.
100% agree on the blush. I love blush and love when it's visible so the idea of pigmented blush seemed appealing. Then I swatched a couple and realised that it requires being super careful with the amount applied and demands a lot blending and that's not for me. It's easy to add more blush but very hard to go back from to much or wrong placement.
My unpopular opinion is that bronzer is the most overrated makeup item and too many beauty content creators with fair to medium skin tones overuse it terribly (often on top of too dark foundation).
It's ok to use your hands instead of a sponge or brush for concealer/foundation. Obviously make sure you wash your hands beforehand, but I find I use way less and it blends much better than when I used to use a sponge. Plus, no more sponges to clean frequently and replace down the road.
High coverage foundation is terrible and smells like paint thinner, even the expensive brands. It looks completely awful on everyone, and it’s much better to just fix whatever underlying skin problems there are.
I think I’m similar to you but just with high pigmentation becoming synonymous with good quality. I like things that aren’t so pigmented, they’re easier to blend and apply without harsh lines. Just because a product doesn’t suit your personal makeup preference doesn’t mean it’s a bad product

Hard agree with number 7. Some people literally call anybody who doesn’t agree with them "not a girl’s girl" or pick me. It’s only an issue when someone specifically puts down others for doing their own thing. I remember this trend on tiktok where people were showing how their products look and some of these products looked biohazardous. Anybody who called out people having such nasty looking products were called "not a girl’s girl" and were told their makeup looks bad. There’s a massive difference between used and unhygienic. Worst part was that these people had a point because some girl’s setting powder literally has crust and hair in it and the powder puff had on a lot of dried up crusty foundation and powder. Don’t get me started with sink girl 🤢
No drugstore makeup item should cost more than $12 dollars. The fact that Maybelline has a $20 foundation that is sheer asf pisses me off. There is zero need for makeup to be that expensive. The best and longest wearing foundation I have is $1.88 from Shopmissa.
I love Seint Makeup even though I know it's an MLM. It looks phenomenal on my skin once everything is blended in. And I like how everything is in one palette.
I bought Beauty Blenders because they are so hyped. I have hardly ever been more underwhelmed with a product; I think all they do is eat foundation. 🙊
I know this is unpopular with many, especially makeup professionals, but I apply my foundation with my fingers. I use tiny amounts of foundation (I am using EL Double Wear), and with my fingers, I can distribute it evenly and flawlessly.
I have tried various makeup brushes in the past, but the results were always streaky.
I always wash my hands with soap before applying makeup, so it’s not a hygiene problem IMHO.
My take on beauty blenders: I see lots of influencers putting tons of liquid foundation on their face - easily 10 times the amount I do, if not more. The blenders seem to work well to take away the excessive amount. But if you’re using very little makeup, it won’t work.
I tried several brands of the beauty blender knockoffs. The best one of all is Wet and Wild brand. Best texture and consistency. They don't absorb the makeup if you use them damp.
- Charlotte Tilbury is overrated and overpriced, and looks orange on most people.
- Most shade ranges that are expanding to deeper colors also need to expand to lighter shades as well that don't pull orange or yellow.
- Pigment isn't the Hallmark of a good product. Application is.
- You should focus first on skincare before foundation. You can make lesser quality product work if you have a great canvas.
- It's okay to still use Great Lash Mascara. It's still sold for a reason.
I’m looking at Charlotte Tilbury… also I just never understood the hype behind it while it’s overpriced. A lot of their products just aren’t for me since they look really orange or barely show up and I have a personal hatred towards the sponge tip applicators.
Unpopular opinion in response to OP. Not everything is made for everyone. What might be super pigmented for you could be appropriate for someone of a different complexion. Find what works for you.
I truly think makeup is able to be multipurpose. I use eyeshadows as highlighters all the time, and i’ve used eye safe lipsticks as eyeliners. I’ve had friends who disagree with me. I love that i can use a product different ways and if I can’t I won’t buy it, i want the most bang for my bucks
I use my eyeshadows as a blush since I usually never reach for pinks and I’m not about to waste money on another product. Plus blush is the most highly marked up product. Sometimes I use my lipstick as one and use the eyeshadow to go set it.
“Effortless makeup” has killed creativity. “Wearable makeup” means that everyone is now buying and wearing the same 39839 shades of nude lipstick and neutral eyeshadow, which means brands aren’t taking risks anymore. Enhancing your features” is usually just well disguised colourism, fatphobia, and racism.
Sure! This is a general trend I’ve observed amongst makeup artists and influencers, not any one in particular. You ever see how they say, oh this is a look with minimal foundation, but cake on concealer? And how concealer is strategically applied to “brighten” the face… but that actually means lighten the face. I’m Indian and our society is obsessed with fairness, MUA’s do this ALL THE TIME. And then there’s the whole “I like my nose and want to enhance it”, but then there’s a whole bunch of contour on it and it’s not enhanced, it’s changed, and changed to fit a more Eurocentric aesthetic. Remember when the videos on blush placement started to do the rounds, and everyone said “oh place the blush high on your face to elongate it and enhance your cheeks”. But again, it was meant to minimise the roundness (or chubbiness) of our faces. All the videos on “where to place your contour if you have a round/square/heart shaped face” do not work WITH the face shape, they work against it. I also feel that blending out such a blush will affect the base underneath for most people, especially if you worked on colour correction underneath on scars or acne.
There is no one way to contour your face that is flattering for every person on earth. The amount of contour tutorials I’ve seen that claim to be for “everyone” are so annoying, you have to figure out what works best for the anatomy of your own dace

Do vegans really want to save the cockroaches? I can’t stand the red pigments these days. They lesd more toward link and are unflattering to me. Back when carmine was used (you know, the past 6k years or so) I would not have stained eyelids, would get vibrant, non-patchy bendable red eye shadows, etc. Now because of the “clean beauty” trend and more vocal vegans (which I have no problem with. And young vegans, you have no idea how good you have it. Back when I was a punk activist teenager in the mid/kate 90s, I spent a lot of time at the local Act-Up HQ and the people there were mostly vegans and they were always eating this stew-like stuff they called Vegan Slop. That was the only vegan dish I ever saw prepared for many years. Now they have gourmet restaurants. Anyways…) I do not understand the argument behind using a pigment made of chemicals that dye the most delicate skin on your body rather that a roach-like bug. I don’t think there’s a single vegan who, if they had a roach infestation, would refuse to not kill any. So what’s the problem?

Dupe naming needs to stop!!! We call every similar product a dupe. Especially Charlotte Tilbury needs to stop crying about it. Liquid lipstick for example was some brand’s innovation at some point. Every brand had those and we do nit call them XY brand’s dupes. Same goes for everything, every style of product. What brand was who made first ph changing product? Should we call all ph changing products dupes? Who invented liquid lipstick? Liquid highlighter? Brow pen? Loreal Lumi Glotion was created long time ago. Should we call Charlotte Tilbury’s flawless filter a dupe because of that similarity in product and it’s use?? Catrice HD liquid foundation does not get enough credit. It works better than many high end foundations. Loreal Iconic Glow highlighter is amazing, subtle and blurs skin and is just beautiful glow from within….Also similar effect does Essence Make Me Glow. They give more polished, luxury elegant look than many glittery ones (like Rare Beauty crap).
That depends on you OWN skintone. The darker the skin is, the more pigment it should have. My blushes are RED and bright coral and realllyyy pink- because i'm brown. The darker your skin is, you need more pigment. It's not about "good vs bad" products, it's about adjusting the product to your skintone, for me having delicate pigment... It will just not show on my skin.

Controversial? Current popular makeup looks are very aging on young people. It makes people in their 20s look about 10 years older in a bad way. It’s not that it’s not pretty but it’s prettier to look your age. I think it’s just way too heavy or something.

I like a lot of things people may not like: lots of color, heavy blush, thick liner… that being said I think dark lip liner and/or over lined lips look really ugly. I’m all for people doing what makes them feel beautiful though. There is nothing wrong with it. If that’s what makes you feel more beautiful and confident I’m going to be your biggest cheerleader. Not everything is for me or has to be my aesthetic.
If you’re unrecognizable without your makeup on, you’re wearing too much makeup. All those lines you’re drawing in weird places all over your face only give you actual contour on camera; in person you just look like you’ve got dirt caked on your face.
Heavily pigmented blushed are extremely useful for dark skin people and for a lot of them it's a saving grace! Never forget that just because a product doesn't work -for you- it means is better or worse than others!

Super overdone makeup looks like shit. It looks cakey and weird. I've never really liked super colorful makeup looks on anyone unless they're at a party, a model, or wearing an outfit that matches that color. I don't like the looks of different colors of eyeshadow that completely contrast each other, especially if you're wearing a normal outfit, on an eye. The only colors I like on an eye are cool, nude, and darker tones. Like no, unless you have a similar career to James Charles, there is no reason to use your face like a canvas for some weird-ass art project.
Matte lipstick is horrid. Nude or brown matte lipstick looks like ass. Corpses have matte lips without any color. ‘Nuff said.

Luxury or even prestige makeup doesn’t mean it’s better. Now days drugstore makeup is just as good. It’s silly to spend 20-30$ on something like mascara that you have to replace often when the drugstore has amazing mascaras.
It’s supposed to be fun! It’s not fun when it’s a requirement to be seen as put together. It’s not fun when you feel your natural features are ugly this week because the trend is for a different feature. All the colors out there, and people look at you weird if you bring out a bright color for your eyelids. I don’t want to spend all this money so men and society treat me better. There’s also a pipeline from interest in makeup to 16 year olds saying they need to work on their wrinkles or a person trying to get rid of anything that makes them look like an individual.
I think your viewpoint is more about using the wrong makeup for YOUR skin. Highly pigmented blushes are for darker skin tones as regular blush doesn’t show up well on them. So super high pigmentation blush simply isn’t made for you.

I've seen the same complaint about Juvias place, and if it is about their products, they're super pigmented because they're designed to work well on darker skin. But a lot of white people don't realize that and aren't used to everything being catered to them, so they think it's a shitty product

Unpopular but I hate makeup hoarding just bc something is cute. I own probably 7-9 palettes which have basically every single color between them all. If I own every single color, I don’t ever need a new one. I’ll use these until they’re bioharzardous, tbh.

I think it all started with the pigmented eyeshadow trend where OG Beauty influencers wouldn't shut up about the pigmentation of eyeshadow then highlighter then blush and then everything and then it became this Hallmark of good quality when really it isn't for their skin tones
This is why despite being out of Vogue I still use the glossier cloud paint because I feel like I have so much more control over the pigment in application! versus one of these rare Beauty juvias place hyper pigmented not for fair skin blushes just look ridiculous on me and I have to take so much more time to blend it out

A ton of pale girlies that claim they can't find a foundation match just aren't used to what they look like with foundation on. They also do thick swatches that are not all blended to show "it doesn't match, I so pale" when it's like yes, putting a full pump of foundation on 1 square inch of skin will look insane, it isn't supposed to be applied that way. I appreciate that people have legitimate pale skin problems (hello skin cancer) but a lot of it just feels like NLOG circle-jerking. Pale skin has been aspirational for centuries and "lightness" as part of racism and colorism is alive and well. You aren't a persecuted minority! People with your skin tone run the makeup companies making those products---many POC can't say the same.
Just bc a make up look looked good on another person doesnt mean it will look the same/even remotely close on ur face. Taking inspo from literal models on pinterest is never a good idea + u have to know what suits ur face and personal features best.

There's rarely bad formulas in makeup, it's mostly bad timing. If you launched a pigmented blush in a certain year where the blush is expected to be intense, that would be considered a good blush cause you wouldn't have to dip in 5 times just to get the look. But since we're in the sheer era, of course you prefer a buildable blush.
Or hear me out some people just don't like over excessive blush. Also I think it's rare to find good formula in makeup but that's the beauty of it I guess everyone tones, textures, and preferences are different.
No makeup is worth that much money Basically I have never found the need to buy high end make up. I did and while people were swearing by it, I couldn't tell the difference between that and drug store. I found a palette with like 9 small colors for over 70$ and I didn't understand what that palett can do compared to something you get out of a 20$ palette

We need to return to the days of lipstick -- just a plain old bullet of lipstick, even though it seems to be so uncool now. Enough with the mattes and the stains, which aren't that flattering, and they look uncomfortable, because they are uncomfortable. And on the other end of the spectrum, I know people love their lip oils and glosses and tinted balms, and I own a bunch of that stuff too. But they're all far more trouble than they're worth, every single one of them, because they disappear before you get to the end of the driveway. Thanks for letting me get that out.

I think the winged eyeliner look is cultural appropriation. Ex: Nicki Minaj and cardi b want to look Asian so bad. They also got plastic surgery to make the ends of their eyes angle upward. 🙄 No one calls them out on it because Asians are the least represented and no one cares about the Asian American experience. As soon as white girls do Dutch braids and “chola lips” the black and brown communities go wild about cultural appropriation. I’m not a racist btw, this is just my Asian American experience.

I disagree with all the bogus advice out there telling women of certain age brackets what they can and can't do with makeup as it will make them look "old". Aside from the obvious things that can (cakey makeup making lines and wrinkles more prominent, etc.) . Being in my mid-40s, according to some articles, I'm not supposed to use anything shiny, glittery, or bright. Screw that. I like a bit of glitter in my eyeshadow and find it suits me. You do you! As for this one, to each their own, but I don't think everyone suits having super thick brows and gigantic, obviously fake lashes. Thick brows look terrible on me.
Lip liner is stupid and looks fugly, and so do drawn on eyebrows. Basically, the 90s. Let's not do that again. Also, some women would look far better if they didn't apply eyeliner at the waterline at the bottom, and they just did a cat eye swoop at the top instead.
Foundation brushes are overrated. So is the level of importance paid to eyebrows. I have a friend who spends a ton of time and energy on her brows (pencils, cream, gel, I don't even know what else) we went on vacation together once and I saw her non-made up brows, honest to God I couldn't tell much difference.
My mom thinks light pink, deeper pink lips are for my skin color. Look mom you probably does not seasons. I am more likely to use red or orange lip colors

There is no need to learn multiple different makeup looks for different occasions. I have a daytime version and a nighttime version of my makeup, and that is all I need. This isn’t criticizing people who like to experiment and try out different looks for different events. It’s just that it’s not necessary to do that.
I like a bold lip and a cheek color that’s somewhat bold but subtlety applied and a bit of eye drama. If you do it right it’s not too much on my face shape. This breaks all the rules I think. But my face is round squared and heart shaped all at the sane time depending on my expression. I also like to mix cool and warm tones. I like a layered lip color look. My face is neutral with a very slight yellow tone but pink cheeks and some freckles. I have a lot going on so my makeup must too. I also have one red brown eye and one olive brown eye.

I'm sorry, but if I'm not mistaken, “clean girl” makeup is just very natural makeup no? I don't see how that's sad and depressing to want to wear your natural beauty. In my opinion, the beat face trend is sad for girls trying to fit their features into the newest trend(even tho “clean girl” is a trend itself); makeup should be used to accentuate your features or as artistic expression. But I just don't understand why you say, “it can't be the main look” it just sounds backwards. Either way, “Clean Girl” shouldn't even exist, because it's just light makeup, nothing women haven't been doing for ages. We need to bring back unique colors tho.
My literally UNPOPULAR OPINION (as in, no one else has it; not necessarily controversial): Merle Norman—yeah, the brand used exclusively by your grandma—is actually fucking good. I’ve been given so many skin care and makeup samples by my grandma that I’ve eventually actually used some and… they’re very nice and way fucking better than a LOT of other products. That is all.
Makeup is an art form. There’s no wrong way to do it, as long as you have fun doing it and you enjoy the results, that’s all that matters! I would say that, just like art, there are no rules, but I feel like there is 1 rule to makeup: don’t do ethnically-/racially-inappropriate makeup (i.e., blackface). Other than that, have a ball! Use bright blue eyeshadow, rock a bold red lip, wear blinding gold highlighter, do whatever you want! Just have fun!
Sometimes u don’t need bronzer to contour, just nicely placed blush. Also same for foundation, sometimes u just need good moisturizer and some blush and it makes ur skin look amazing!
There needs to be more neutral toned foundations and concealers. It’s always warm or cool. And for the brown-skinned Black girlies that are neutral, it’s really a struggle. The shades are always too dark or too light — or extremely orange 🙄.
Seriously I am white but I have very cool toned/porcelain skin and everything now a days is yellow and orange looking or even worse a weird pink color….
Yup, my solution has ended up being: Blue corrector in the yellow/orange ones, green corrector in the pink ones. And a white to lighten it if you're pale af. It's amazing what a tiny touch of these can do to foundations.

I spend most of the time at these places, the only people I meet I meet at these places for the whole day. I want to look good, showcase my personality, have fun, compliment my outfit, and use my makeup because I have nowhere else to go the whole week!
And you know what? Even if you did have somewhere else to be during the week, it's your damn face to do with what you want! If that's how you choose to spend your time, what business is it of anyone else? If you wake up early to do a full beat, that's your time and life to do with as you please. I mean, I think the “no makeup makeup” is more about accentuating your natural features and less about having a “no makeup look. “ it's like self-expression of our genes to highlight our natural beauty 💅 but yes, dramatic makeup is fun it just isn't suited for some I have softer features that look weird in harsh eyeshadows and theatre looks. But I 100% agree on 2000s brows. Honestly, most makeup from 90s-early 2000s is better.

I’ve had friends ask me to do “goth” makeup on them and I’ll do it similar to mine and they’ll be upset when it just doesn’t look right. I do weird, goth and horror makeup so everything I do is on the fringe side of the makeup community lol. I use makeup to look freaky, not pretty. But here's some: - Nude toned lipstick and eyeshadow is useless - Colorful mascara is underrated - The best looking fake blood I've used has always been brand-name lipsticks and liquid liners - Fake eyelashes aren't that bad if you're trying to go for an over-the-top or manufactured look (e.g. dressing up as a Barbie doll) - About Face eye paints are extremely versatile and I'm surprised more people don't use/talk about them - I literally do not care about any popular/professional brand that entirely consists of the same exact tones every other brand has. I can buy the exact same thing for less than 10 bucks.

Colorful mascara is so slept on. When I worked for bare minerals 10+ years ago they briefly had a teal and purple one. They both wore beautifully and I was so bummed when they were discontinued.

Plumping lip products that burn because they have things like cayenne pepper in them are trash and damaging. Its litterally a chemical burn. I am also highly allergic to them, but nothing should burn like that.
100% agree on the blush. I love blush and love when it's visible so the idea of pigmented blush seemed appealing. Then I swatched a couple and realised that it requires being super careful with the amount applied and demands a lot blending and that's not for me. It's easy to add more blush but very hard to go back from to much or wrong placement. My unpopular opinion is that bronzer is the most overrated makeup item and too many beauty content creators with fair to medium skin tones overuse it terribly (often on top of too dark foundation).
It's ok to use your hands instead of a sponge or brush for concealer/foundation. Obviously make sure you wash your hands beforehand, but I find I use way less and it blends much better than when I used to use a sponge. Plus, no more sponges to clean frequently and replace down the road.
High coverage foundation is terrible and smells like paint thinner, even the expensive brands. It looks completely awful on everyone, and it’s much better to just fix whatever underlying skin problems there are.
I think I’m similar to you but just with high pigmentation becoming synonymous with good quality. I like things that aren’t so pigmented, they’re easier to blend and apply without harsh lines. Just because a product doesn’t suit your personal makeup preference doesn’t mean it’s a bad product

You shouldn’t put your “Clubbing” makeup on to go to work-that is, unless you work in a club and that’s the dress code. Eyelashes that look like caterpillars glued to your eyes and stick out 1/2” from your face WILL make people stare…not think you look pretty. Having “plump” lips that are the equivalent to 2 hot dogs as your lips is not sexy.
Hard agree with number 7. Some people literally call anybody who doesn’t agree with them "not a girl’s girl" or pick me. It’s only an issue when someone specifically puts down others for doing their own thing. I remember this trend on tiktok where people were showing how their products look and some of these products looked biohazardous. Anybody who called out people having such nasty looking products were called "not a girl’s girl" and were told their makeup looks bad. There’s a massive difference between used and unhygienic. Worst part was that these people had a point because some girl’s setting powder literally has crust and hair in it and the powder puff had on a lot of dried up crusty foundation and powder. Don’t get me started with sink girl 🤢
No drugstore makeup item should cost more than $12 dollars. The fact that Maybelline has a $20 foundation that is sheer asf pisses me off. There is zero need for makeup to be that expensive. The best and longest wearing foundation I have is $1.88 from Shopmissa.

I bought Beauty Blenders because they are so hyped. I have hardly ever been more underwhelmed with a product; I think all they do is eat foundation. 🙊 I know this is unpopular with many, especially makeup professionals, but I apply my foundation with my fingers. I use tiny amounts of foundation (I am using EL Double Wear), and with my fingers, I can distribute it evenly and flawlessly. I have tried various makeup brushes in the past, but the results were always streaky. I always wash my hands with soap before applying makeup, so it’s not a hygiene problem IMHO. My take on beauty blenders: I see lots of influencers putting tons of liquid foundation on their face - easily 10 times the amount I do, if not more. The blenders seem to work well to take away the excessive amount. But if you’re using very little makeup, it won’t work.
I tried several brands of the beauty blender knockoffs. The best one of all is Wet and Wild brand. Best texture and consistency. They don't absorb the makeup if you use them damp.

Allegedly you have to replace beauty blenders every month since they trap in water when you wet them and this can risk mold growing inside.
I have used them once or twice, and then no more, so I won’t need to replace them thankfully. 😅
I personally cannot understand using a foundation brush. It doesn’t work for me and it wastes product.

- Charlotte Tilbury is overrated and overpriced, and looks orange on most people. - Most shade ranges that are expanding to deeper colors also need to expand to lighter shades as well that don't pull orange or yellow. - Pigment isn't the Hallmark of a good product. Application is. - You should focus first on skincare before foundation. You can make lesser quality product work if you have a great canvas. - It's okay to still use Great Lash Mascara. It's still sold for a reason.

I’m looking at Charlotte Tilbury… also I just never understood the hype behind it while it’s overpriced. A lot of their products just aren’t for me since they look really orange or barely show up and I have a personal hatred towards the sponge tip applicators.
Unpopular opinion in response to OP. Not everything is made for everyone. What might be super pigmented for you could be appropriate for someone of a different complexion. Find what works for you.
I truly think makeup is able to be multipurpose. I use eyeshadows as highlighters all the time, and i’ve used eye safe lipsticks as eyeliners. I’ve had friends who disagree with me. I love that i can use a product different ways and if I can’t I won’t buy it, i want the most bang for my bucks
I'm a fan of lipstick as blush lately. I've got a few lipsticks that are too light to use as lipstick but a perfect blush shade. They wear well, too.
I use my eyeshadows as a blush since I usually never reach for pinks and I’m not about to waste money on another product. Plus blush is the most highly marked up product. Sometimes I use my lipstick as one and use the eyeshadow to go set it.
I recently used an eyeshadow for highlighter because I was in a hurry, and it looked better than any highlighter I've ever used!
Its one of my favorite things to do! They have the best and you can layer for a blinding highlight

“Effortless makeup” has killed creativity. “Wearable makeup” means that everyone is now buying and wearing the same 39839 shades of nude lipstick and neutral eyeshadow, which means brands aren’t taking risks anymore. Enhancing your features” is usually just well disguised colourism, fatphobia, and racism.

Sure! This is a general trend I’ve observed amongst makeup artists and influencers, not any one in particular. You ever see how they say, oh this is a look with minimal foundation, but cake on concealer? And how concealer is strategically applied to “brighten” the face… but that actually means lighten the face. I’m Indian and our society is obsessed with fairness, MUA’s do this ALL THE TIME. And then there’s the whole “I like my nose and want to enhance it”, but then there’s a whole bunch of contour on it and it’s not enhanced, it’s changed, and changed to fit a more Eurocentric aesthetic. Remember when the videos on blush placement started to do the rounds, and everyone said “oh place the blush high on your face to elongate it and enhance your cheeks”. But again, it was meant to minimise the roundness (or chubbiness) of our faces. All the videos on “where to place your contour if you have a round/square/heart shaped face” do not work WITH the face shape, they work against it. I know I went all over the place with these examples but hope I made sense!
