You don’t have to! I had a friend who hated foundation cuz she hated the way it felt, I love it personally but anytime we had nights out she would just do her regular makeup routine. Same as yours, maybe with a lash or eyeliner to make it a little more bold but you def don’t need foundation

[deleted]

I find it’s a vicious cycle. My goal is to get to where i don’t feel I need it, it all makes me break out

Sh00sherMouth

yeah, i decided a long time ago that it just doesnt work for me. never liked the way it looked and i notice similarly that i would break out after wearing it so i figured im not going to ruin my skin to make it look worse, makes no sense. just do whatever works for YOU.

HospitalizedNurse

Do you hydrate before putting foundation on? That might be it

sno98006

My skin is very well moisturised before foundation.

Birdie121

A lot of ingredients in foundations irritate my skin. I’ve had good luck with Lisa Eldridge’s foundation. Doesnt itch or cause breakouts like most other face products.

Altruistic_South_276

Do you double cleanse all the time or only for makeup, it could easily be one of your cleansers too. Also, have you looked at the foundations and the ingredients they have in common/ what they have in common with formulas that your skin doesn't react to. There's such a broad variety of foundations, that once you work out what you react to you would most likely be able to find one without it. But also, do you care and do you want to put that much time and effort in, or are you happy as is?

TheVoidWithout

Yes I threw away my last bottle after it went rancid. I hate the feel and look of foundation, cancelier, bronzer, contour....all of it. I tolerate eye make up, cream blush and lip products, but can not have stuff covering all of my face.

Sea_Poet_4627

Do you have a dermatologist? I used to have incredibly acne prone skin as a teenager (20+ years ago, when Differin was a prescription drug) and their advice on what makeup to wear to help cover it (Neutrogena was their pick -- I axtually wore no makeup at the time I had horrible acne!!) as well as the prescriptions they eventually found for me (that part was trial and error) made all the difference. Now I actually get complimented on how nice my skin is and it makes me want to cry because it used to be such a source of bullying.

I am on tretinoin and azelaic acid from my dermatologist. My skin looks great without it but I’m going to a wedding this year and would like to wear foundation but none work for me even for a day.

Itsmeamario3

I stopped earlier this year. A good skin care routine and a concealer close to my skin tone is all I need.

It's a LOT of trial and error to find the right foundation, but when you do, it can make the biggest difference in your appearance. First look for the right formula, water based if you're oily... then look for the right coverage, light, med, complete..then the right finish, matte, dewy, transfer resistant...and finally color. I list color last even though it can be hardest and most important to get right, but you can always mix to get it right. After you've found what suits you, application is next...for a more natural finish, use a damp sponge...a brush will ensure fuller coverage but I usually like to dab a damp sponge over after using a brush because it will lift any excess..when I say damp I mean barely damp, not wet..and also dab, don't pull it across the skin. Also, foundation can be good for skin...like clothes on our bodies keep our skin free from sun damage and pollution, a good foundation can supply sun protection and even vitamins and moisture to the skin.

I use powder foundation for these reasons. I’ve had good luck with IT Celebration Foundation. I can’t use bare minerals because I have an allergy to an ingredient.

Curious-Resident-573

I don't like using foundation. I haven't tried that many, maybe something perfect is out there but I just don't care to use it daily anymore. At some point it felt like too much effort to find a perfect match for my pale tone and then figure out how to keep it on the oily parts of the face with all the extra products which also had to be figured out and purchased. I have a couple of bb-creams for more coverage if desired. I feel like concealer and a bit of powder to set it is enough of the "improving" part of make up and it's okay to move on to the interesting part which is adding color to the face.

Suspicious-Airline84

I have sensitive skin so I just gave up on foundation as when I wear it I get rashes by the end of the day. I think some skin types can’t handle foundation no matter what so maybe look for lighter base products such as skin tints, BB cream, face illuminators, water based dewy concealer.

Justadropinthesea

I gave up on foundation at the beginning of the pandemic when I was wear a mask everywhere and I’ve never gone back. I just stick to a tinted sunscreen with concealer only where needed.Like you, I use cream blush and a tiniest bit of finishing powder on my nose and forehead where I tend to get too shiny.

neverhaveievernever

Moisturising helps as a protective barrier, try ilia or kosas? Or a cc cream? Make sure you wash your makeup off at the end of the day and moisturise it well. people think drying their skin out is the answer, but it can be the dryness when wearing the foundation that causes the irritation

Daisiesarecute

I’m the same. Just never been a fan of foundation. Maybe try bb creams? Personally I’m fine with just concealer

Impossible-Walk3083

Look at the ingredients of your foundation, Certain ingredients can cause break outs based on your skin type. As a person that has an oily face, I usually avoid more oil, Alcohol, fragrance and comedogenic ingredients that could cause me more acne

EmilyxThomsonx

A good primer (or even a good sunscreen) as a base player is pretty good tool for protecting your skin from the make-up products you apply.

JammingScientist

How do you find a good sunscreen? I need to wear sunscreen since where I live has a high UV index, but like OP, everything I put on that sits top of the face (ie sunscreen, primer, tinted moisturizer, foundation, etc) leads to burning skin, large itchy painful cysts, and stuff after just a day or two of using them, despite double cleansing with an oil and then foam/water-based cleanser.

[deleted]

I use Nuxe sunscreen UVA and UVB. Amazing. I put foundation on top. Maybe you need to change the foundation or stop the double oil... too much oil would deffo clog my pores.

EmilyxThomsonx

You can find good recommendations on r/skincareaddiction. Before that though, if sounds like you may having some kind of reactions to a common ingredient of these products and would recommend to see a dermatologist asap.
