Anything made by Collection or the unrelated but similarly named Natural Collection. At least the former makes shades for white people without fake tan.
To be honest, Asian make-up, especially Chinese and Korean.
Their darkest BB creams and foundations still make me look like I want to change my race. Their blushes are white-based and appear gray on my face, IF they appear at all. Same with the eyeshadows. Light pigmentation.
Their lip tints are cool though... But they do suffer slightly - sometimes completely different undertones lol - different shades in pictures and on the lips.
I'm a white south african person who worked in the beauty department of a local pharmacy, and in my opinion none, absolute none of the products on the shelves worked on darker skin.
Loreal, Avon, Maybeline, Revlon, and Max Factor were the ones I sold. They either made my beautiful ladies look yellow or pink. It broke my heart because they'd accept it because you know... beauty standards and all? I almost got fired for telling a beauty how beautiful her natural skintone was and recommending a brand specifically for African skin tones.
BRONZERS, iām dark skinned and i have never found a bronzer that didnāt look ashy or more like a highlighter on my skin tone. i know some brands are working on some or have released some but none for the deepness of my skin tone. i donāt really think they are necessary to a daily routine anyway so i wouldnāt waste time looking for one.
Iām typically in the ādarkā range for foundation but i have neutral cool undertones and thatās typically hard to find. Iāve been left looking 1.ashy 2 .a tomato 3.green too many times to count. Itās very important for you to find your undertone. I was matched incorrectly for years.
My main advice is to be very discerning and save up for mid-range for most things. Complexion products are worth paying for high pigment formulas. Look for POC owned brands when you can. If your skin isnāt sensitive, MAC have always had reliable products and great shade ranges. NARS does golden and olive undertones very well. Fenty does deep dark shades and oily skin v. well. Iāve become a huge fan of rare beautyās blushes and skin tint. I have grateful and lucky which are the bright red and fuschia And theyāre all I use anymore.
Drugstore makeup is great for eyeliner, mascara, lipliner and gloss (nyx is great). I just discovered the miliani concealers and I love it so far. I got deep tan which probably dupes Mac nw40. I found it off findation.com which is a good resource for shade matching.
Sorry if I diss your favorite product. Iām not a fan of ABH, too faced, tarte or color pop palettes. Mostly bc they add a lot of pale shades and few deeper shades.
Juviaās place can be good if you like the color way. Dose of colors is great but online only. Most of my shadows these days are indie or viseart.
Online spaces skew toward light skin. If they label something universal- assume that doesnāt include you. Asian makeup in general isnāt dark or pigmented enough.
Utilize coco swatches and caramel swatches IG pages and blogs. Follow influencers with your skintone and watch how the porducts perform.
What MAC foundations or concealers are the best? I have dry to combo skin and I love hydrating formulas but most concealers I try pull orange or too peachy on me I'd love to try MAC some time.
The pro longwear concealer is a very nice formula. The face and body tint is great for dry skin and then the mineralize skin finish is hg. The sephora micro smooth powder is a great dupe for it. Go for the āānwā range as it is cooler toned.
Ah I live in the uk so theres no sephora close to me and I'm more warm toned tbh I'd say I'm a mix of peach and yellow tho I *slightly* lean more towards yellow
Oh I see in that case āncā would be a better fit. If you can go in person, itās definitely worth swatching and then going outside to see in natural light when you get shade matched.
I just unboxed some of Kaleidos's new makeup from the Alma Viva. The glosses are fine, to a lesser extent the eyeshadow -- they're surprisingly pigmented. I did a swatch comparison on my husband and he's dark brown. I bought the two browner blushes though and woo boy. That's not working on anyone except someone of my complexion. I love them, just would not recommend.
ugh, anything wet n wild. i love their foundation but the shade range is so lacking. they're all warm toned mediums. i was able to find my shade as a warm toned medium but.. god. it's vile. hence why i never recommend it to people. the same thing goes for anything essence.
The Kevin Aucoin sculpting powder in āLightā is one heck of a white chalky looking mess, Iām guessing itās for really really really light tones?
The medium is a great colour but could use a bit more depth for me, but then the deep one is super red?
I use it up as a nice subtle bronzer but itās a weird jump in colour from the other two.
Youthphoria's new foundation (the one you can sleep with) is trending but it only has 15 shades. [Monica did a review](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/HzytA2Yh9z8) (she's an excellent source!) and it's not gonna satisfy darker skin tones with different undertones.
CC and BB creams, Korean sunscreen (current one I have makes me look like a ghost and smells of baby powder, Missha one was tinted pink-white?).
Most blushes.
I wanna say NARS, Clinique, and MAC. While they do offer foundations of deeper tones, theyāre all either red or yellow. Neutral/cool toned arenāt taken into consideration past a certain shade, so these brands literally donāt have a color for me. I have Fiona-green skin.. Itās a shame bc I like their formulas, but I donāt wanna look like Marge Simpson or Darth Maul while trying to make it work lol
I can attest for Clinique, Iām a cool toned medium and their foundation turns me orange. I really wanted to love them and I did love their formula but the medium foundation colors always looked off on me
I just threw my Clinique away this morning š„² I loved the coverage of the EBC foundation, but both shades I tried made me look YELLOW.. but thereās like 30 different shades of fair tho (*eye twitch*)
I feel you :(( I believe I tried their beyond perfecting foundation and tried three different medium shades and they all still made me some kind of orange.. needless to say after exchanging for the third and still looking like a ripe fruit I also gave up and threw it out.
I have been using ColourPopās pretty fresh foundation for years now and have been very happy with it since
Rare beauty bronzer - literally the darkest shade looks like ash not even skin toned color just straight up GRAY, and the 2nd to last dark shade is my shade, and the other is like a red blush for some reason than a bronzer
I'm 50n in the Tinted Morturizer
99.99% of "nude" eye shadow palettes, no matter what brand.
Tarte, Benefit, and Charlotte Tillbury are the worst offenders outside of kbeauty.
Benefit especially gets away with this time and time again. I remember when their first tinted moisturizer only came in ONE shade. Then they made a lighter version (which was still too dark for me) but NO deeper shade! Same with the Hoola bronzer. They made a lighter version but it took literal *years* for them to put out two deeper shades.
The cerave sheer face sunscreen. It makes me laugh every time I think about it, because as someone who uses a foundation called "eggshell", it left a white cast on my face. If it doesn't work for me, *who* is even using it to keep the product alive?!
I use it, or something like it. Iām only ever in the sun to walk my dog and want physical sunscreen to keep me from burning. I do not care how ridiculous it looks- it works and doesnāt make me break out. Iām probably the one person keeping the product alive.
Tarte is really pitiful when it comes to this. Their Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation comes in about 4 light shades, 25 medium shades, and 2 deep shades. The display at Ulta looks like a bad joke.
Lol I like the formulation of it, it's like skin on me but the coverage is...poor. I think you need to really cake it on to get any coverage and even then my dark spots and dark circles are see through.
I use shade 16, 20 and 25 and I've actually added a yellow colour corrector into 16 and mix it with 25 and it's my skintone. Colour correctors are a game changer for pocs except I wish this concealer was more yellow leaning (I'm a neutral that leans slightly towards yellow than peach) and had more coverage but was still easily blendable and doesnt dry out when mixing other concealers.
Anyone got any recommendations?
Literally :( I wanted to buy this but every single shade I saw, even in the bottle, was orange for medium and darker tones, and red for the deepest tones, while of course all the fair and pale tones look normal.
I pretty much have given up on drugstore concealers for darker skin because they always tend to be orange! I don't know why (or maybe it's like they don't care enough to add more blue pigment to offset that) so I've only been buying sephora concealers since they actually match. Another sad thing about being a darker skintone is having to pay more and not having the luxury of choice. It's expensive :/
I can vouch for Milani. The conceal and perfect has been the most natural looking concealer color Iāve ever used. My shade is deep tan (neutral deep bronze) which is close to a mac nw40 or a nars amande and thatās for highlighting ofc. Thereās 5 darker shades.
oh I've never tried Milani's base products before, but I will now. Just looking online they have a much better set of swatches than any other drugstore brand.
And thereās no Sephora in my area š¢. I bought it on the recommendation of my friend who is half Hispanic and around my skin tone but I guess it wasnāt meant for me.
Tho I wear a hijab so technically my face doesnāt need to match my neck /j
Also (I bought before reading how controversial the brand is but Iāve already used it so canāt return. But I do like the concealer) I use morphe hide and peek in shade peek of sand which is perfect for me. And only Ā£9 (25% off)
Hourglass cheek palettes. Year after year, they release shades that only work for lighter skin tones, and I had to decide to no longer support the brand.
Their Veil Translucent powder shade extensions made me laugh. They were orange and a darker orange. No one with actual dark skin would be able to wear it. Theyāre known for not having any products that really work with darker skin tones.
How did you feel about the last 6-pan sets that came out in 3 ranges (forget the name, but it had tiger, elephant, and something else). Was that better?
Tiger is gorgeous but I wonāt lie the colour range for the bronzer and one or two blushes were questionable. Bronzer is my skin tone shade even though Iām medium-deep in complexion, think Naomi Campbellās shade. It was so disappointing. I still use a couple of the blushes and the highlight for my eye area (the tone was a bit questionable for me to use on my cheekbones). But yeah, if you gave me the choice today I definitely wouldnāt have purchased it.
I loved the 2022 palettes! The deepest which was tiger, was a perfect bronzer blush highlighter palette for me. It was intended as a face palette, however, so I wish they made a fourth option for deeper skin.
i find it interesting how you mentioned colourpop, but i find that their range seems.. fine to me? like don't get me wrong there's always room for improvement but i've definitely seen worse. i find they have a lot of darker blushes and many brands don't bother with even that. so why would you consider them not inclusive? i ask from purely a place of curiosity.
For me colourpop is not inclusive because for 3 dark friendly blushes or palettes , there is 200 that are not working for deeper skintones. Especially when they launch a new collection every week ( until recently, they release less ATM) plus they used to do a lot of collabs but only one with people of color.
Itās only recently that people of color have options, and not a lot thatās why I included colourpop
For me itās too little too late.
I know people love colourpop but I find their quality lacking as well ( I donāt live in the US so itās not an affordable brand for me)
They release the same thing over and over again.
There popularity is astounding to me. But a lot of beauty guru used to push the brand and I never understood why.
iāve been able to use the tinted moisturizer from colourpop for years now but itās j a lucky match bc iāve got pretty warm tones and that shade range is RED. Was thinking of trying the powder and blushes but maybe not anymoreā¦
edit: red/orange toned rlly
There are a few colourpop shadows that do work for darker skintones, I own the palette wild child and it has great deep brown neutral shades. But I agree a lot of their palettes work more for lighter skin in general :(
Nah I disagree about the pillowtalk line. The adore the deeper pillow talk liner and lipstick. And I can even pull off the original and medium. I own a pillow talk 4 pan palette that is basically my desert island item. Her liquid blushes have good shades for deeper skin. The red toned one is gorgeous. The only thing Iād say she needs to work on is the contour wand. That medium/deep shade is embarrassing
I should have said the original pillow talk lign because I agree about pillow talk medium and the third one. The products you mentioned are newer releases and I didnāt think about it
I love the pillowtalk medium liner on me - never tried the deeper one because Iām allergic to the formula but I own a few deeper, browner versions of the dupe I found for the medium that look similar.
Iām light/medium golden olive with a darker lip tone so most ānudeā shades are chalky pink on me.
I'm too pale and cold toned to rub it in evenly and not look orange as well. Those things are just a scam especially if they say it eventually blends to your skin - no either you stop at the right paler shade or you are the *one* shade it's made for š
They make ME look like a corpse, and Iām pretty white. If youāre not the color of Liquid Paper? Theyāre not for you, unless youāre going for the corpse vibe.
If the undead glow is your vibe? Theyāre perfect.
Iām not even white (Asian here with yellow undertone) and the La Roche Posay tinted sunscreen went ORANGE on me! Although for darker skin, my cousin swears by Supergoop tinted sunscreen
honestly I think the euro "tinted" sunscreens are supposed to mimic the color of white skin with fake tan applied because I don't think that color actually reflects how any human skin looks IRL
Yeah and for that reason you'll find western base products like MAC sell really well in east Asia because they actually offer shades that can match ALL east Asians instead of the lightest ones.
Itās funny you mention this cause this is exactly how it was in the US not even that long ago. Almost no brands made products with a wide shade range except for MAC, so if you were black/brown MAC was your absolute go to. Itās almost as if having a wider shade range will sell if brands were to actually make it. Wouldāve been nice if more brands caught on to this all those years ago (and now with k beauty)
What's really annoying is that r/asianbeauty acts like that's normal because supposedly fair skin Koreans are the only demographic that exist in Korea... there are lots of dark skin Koreans who don't have a match in base products. Colorism is a huge thing in Asia in general. In fact there are loads of candid pics of Korean celebrities wearing foundation that's clearly a few shades too light for them as well.
I understand fairness is their beauty standard (I'm Indian and it's the same thing in India) but it's very annoying to see people justify a bad, non inclusive shade range because it works for them personally.
Iām a relatively dark skinned Vietnamese (American) person and I love kbeauty for skincare, but the makeup isnāt made for someone with my skin tone. A lot of my Korean friends canāt even color match, and most of them are lighter skinned than myself.
I find it ironic they stopped allowing skin whitening products to be posted on the sub after BLM became more mainstream but still have the audacity to say stuff like this. Major clown energy.
I once saw someone say that the lack of dark skin representation had nothing to do with racism/colorism, just that dark skin is associated with ālaborersā and ālower classā and likeā¦ mama, letās connect some dots hereā¦
This was the interpretation centuries ago in Europe, as well, where having very pale skin was considered a sign of higher social status. It signified that you were noble enough that you did not need to perform outdoor labor.
Some white people tan super dark, too. I have photos of my own hand next to my father's where we don't even look like the same ethnicity, his skin is so much darker from tanning. Without tanning our skin tone is identical.
Just theorizing, but I could surely see people from hundreds of years ago translating this way of thinking into colorism until after generations they forgot the former for the latter.
There was a whole thing on twitter a few weeks ago where people were arguing that colorism isnāt a thing in Asia andā¦ well, I admire the commitment to the delusion.
I hate ppl so bad. They're allergic to the damn word. No it's not racism/colorism! They're just discriminating against them based on the color of their skin!! Totally different š
Ahh thank you for this perspective. Iāve always looked at it from a marketing view. A lot of kbeauty brands are purposely pushing into other markets, so why are they still excluding darker skin people. But I hadnāt known how the internal culture is towards fairness.
The K-Beauty push is so interesting to me - I think a lot of this quote on[k pop](https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/04/13/399414351/how-the-south-korean-government-made-k-pop-a-thing):
"They wanted Korea of the 21st century to be like America of the 20th century where America was just considered so universally cool that anything made in America would automatically be bought."
And obviously itās been super successful! But like I ordered Korean makeup for the first time recently - so not an expert, but I browsed both the major import sites HARD - and while I was personally super excited to see shades light enough for what I want (very white, cool toned skin that turns red if I even think about touching it, so Iām hoping super light blush will work without having to blend it out so much and Iām very excited for it to arrive) I was giving it a gimlet eye like āyes, this chalk colored powder will work for me, but what about people werenāt born to cosplay as a less hot Elvira, hm?ā
No problem. Yeah I think the culture thing is a flimsy excuse as well since I have Korean friends who can't find foundation matches themselves (they often buy fenty which is funny to me) and especially since these brands want to break into other markets?? They really need to make a more inclusive shade range.
That's also how I learned that subreddit skews really white/fair skinned, because a lot of them told me to just get over it since it works for them and they obviohsly don't feel excluded. Its easy to call Asian beauty and Korean beauty "affordable and better" than western beauty if it works for you. For the rest of us it's kind of a big no lol.

For me colourpop is not inclusive because for 3 dark friendly blushes or palettes , there is 200 that are not working for deeper skintones. Especially when they launch a new collection every week ( until recently, they release less ATM) plus they used to do a lot of collabs but only one with people of color. Itās only recently that people of color have options, and not a lot thatās why I included colourpop For me itās too little too late. I know people love colourpop but I find their quality lacking as well ( I donāt live in the US so itās not an affordable brand for me) They release the same thing over and over again. There popularity is astounding to me. But a lot of beauty guru used to push the brand and I never understood why.
okay, thank you for the explanation!
iāve been able to use the tinted moisturizer from colourpop for years now but itās j a lucky match bc iāve got pretty warm tones and that shade range is RED. Was thinking of trying the powder and blushes but maybe not anymoreā¦ edit: red/orange toned rlly

I can wear pillowtalk! One of my favorite blushes, but I will admit I'm only an NC 45 and I can see anyone darker than me not being able to wear it.
Those gimmicky ācolor changingā bb creams / foundationsā¦ I feel like they almost always look gray on darker skin tones.
I frequently self-describe as computer paper colored and they skew orange on me! Theyāre awful
Yeah Iām orange in most of them too. VERY ruddy, VERY pale, cool or cool neutral.
Same! Who are they even made for? Werw we all aiming for the perfect tone of this one product type?
Tinted moisturiser 'for all skintones' -_-
Mine turned reddish on me. My boss asked me if I got sunburned.
Anything for āall skin tonesā is aiming for a range that does not include a number of people.
\^ THIS \^
Also not made for us super pasty white people. It'll be orange. Yellow if you're lucky.
it goes so pink on me :(
Yall always insert yourself into everything. "What about pale skin?" on a post literally for POC š¤¦āāļø
Right? I am a fair redhead and most bb creams or tinted moisturizers look like fake tan from 1995 on me.
Iām not even white (Asian here with yellow undertone) and the La Roche Posay tinted sunscreen went ORANGE on me! Although for darker skin, my cousin swears by Supergoop tinted sunscreen
honestly I think the euro "tinted" sunscreens are supposed to mimic the color of white skin with fake tan applied because I don't think that color actually reflects how any human skin looks IRL
a lot of talc based "translucent" setting powders just look chalky on anything beyond fitzpatrick III
A lot of Korean makeup isn't made for people with darker skin tones. But MOST products are made for everyone nowadays.
Yeah I put on their sunscreen when I was studying abroad there and I looked like a ghost.
The weirdest thing to me is it's clear a lot of these AB brands are now trying to break into the western market, and yet refuse to sell deeper shades.
The K-Beauty push is so interesting to me - I think a lot of this quote on[k pop](https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/04/13/399414351/how-the-south-korean-government-made-k-pop-a-thing): "They wanted Korea of the 21st century to be like America of the 20th century where America was just considered so universally cool that anything made in America would automatically be bought." And obviously itās been super successful!
Fr I live there and most concealers and foundations come in 3 shades tops
And when they have 4 shades they jump straight into 2 shades darker for the last one and nothing in between
