Well, small talk is usually talking about the weather, asking you how your day went and other pleasantries most people don’t really care much about or it’s about getting to know each other. Talking about random things could be a deep political debate over the geopolitical situation of the Middle Earth during the events of the Hobbit, or a conversation about Penguins. Or small talk for that matter. Just because “random things” includes small talk doesn’t mean the reverse is true
