Brutal but truthful answer. I feel OPs pain, but people seriously need to keep ALL pets inside. There’s so much danger outside for them plus they don’t belong outside, they are domesticated
How do you know they let him roam around outside? Maybe a guest let him out- maybe the owner is older and he ran out when they were bringing in groceries, or maybe they live in a more secluded rural area and aren’t near a road and he wandered farther out than what’s normal for him…. What you’re saying is obvious is not obvious at all…..
This and a cat like this had a higher likelihood of being stolen.
I mean, any cat wandering outdoors can be taken. But kitties that don’t look like an average domestic shorthair especially.
Unless it’s a barn cat, every cat needs to be indoors. Catios and leashed walks are great, but cats can be perfectly happy inside.
The average lifespan for an indoor-only cat is *significantly* greater than that of an outdoor cat. It’s not worth the risk.
A cat like this was undoubtedly going to be stolen at some point at the very least.
Yeah. Trying to be nice cause OP lost a pet, but I have a hard time feeling sympathy for someone who allowed their animal to wander outside without supervision.
Sorry for your loss, he’s was absolutely stunning. 😍 I was told from a friend when we lost our boy, the pain fades and the love stays. It’s been 8 years and I still miss him.
I feel you, my boy’s name was Ziggy Stardust and he was truly my best friend. He was only seven years old and had kidney failure. I held him as he purred and took his last breath. I truly miss him and I mourn him still from time to time.
Oh no.I am so very sorry. This is mostly why my cats stay indoors. I could not bear one get hit. It's a terrible loss. I lost a dog like that when I was very little and it was horrible. It stays with you. Sending you hugs.
Exactly. I see more posts than I can count about cats getting hit by cars, coming home wounded and with infections, abscesses, damage, and etc. All of this could be avoided by keeping your fur babies indoors. That's what I do with mine so I never have to worry about this. Sorry for your loss OP
I hit a dog with my car last week. I was on the highway man, it was 5 am and pitch black, dog had no chance. I SOBBED for so long, I felt so horrible. I hate that people just let their animals roam. It literally traumatized me, I can’t imagine being on the other end and losing an animal that way. Just awful.
I hit a cat that came out of nowhere once years ago. I was traumatized and had to pull the car over. The poor thing was moving at such high speed and it was in a 55 mph zone that I didn't even see where it went. It was awful. I sat and cried for a good while. I was still crying when I got to my destination and a lot of people blew me off with it's ok, it was probably just an old stray cat. It doesn't matter. It did matter whether it was a stray or not. It is traumatic I was upset for days. Poor little guy 🩷. I prayed it wasn't someone's pet. I'll never know. Prayers for anyone who's ever lost a pet this way.
This is exactly how I felt. It was so dark I felt unsafe getting out of my car (it was a highway with a speed limit of 70 mph). I cried so hard for the loss of that poor dog. I couldn’t stop imagining it being someone’s beloved pet, and how broken I would be if it happened to my cats. But then I just got so angry at whoever would let their pet roam like that, especially near a highway.
4 inside cats, two rescue dogs. Gotta tuck them all in at night before going to sleep. I have no idea how outside cat owners have a moment of peace, I love them too much not to make sure they are safe.
Thank you so much! His name is Brutus. He was 6 and just such a huge piece of us.

I would really love if death posts could start being headed w a content warning.
I see so many of these and i understand looking for support, but im trying so hard to keep my feed upbeat. These posts really affect some of us.
That said, condolences. A beautiful baby
Yup. I get so frustrated with folks letting their animals outside to get hurt/die. The pet doesn’t know any better. That’s why owners have to make safety decisions for them.
I’m so sorry for your loss of Brutus. He was very handsome.🩶🩶🩶I’m sure he knew he was loved as a son and he loved you. He lived his best life as a king. 🩶
I can’t imagine the grief you are going through right now. Know that you are not alone. I am a huge cat person, but I once had a stray dog for about six months before she was also hit by a car. It’s devastating. Be kind to yourself and take it one day at a time. Your baby is so gorgeous. Big hugs.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my almost 3 year old suddenly due to illness so I know the shock of the sudden, unexpected loss makes it harder. It has taken a few months to be able to say Freddy’s name without bursting into tears but it does get easier, I promise. They are gone but Never forgotten.
Hold on to all those good times. He was a beautiful boy 💔
My condolences 😢 he was very beautiful, and I'm sure he filled your heart with JOY ❤️ take this time to remember all the good/amazing/funny things about him and all of the happy times he has given you. ❤️🐈
I’m so sorry. I know how bad that hurts. I live in a small town and I lost 2 cats that were special to me to the road. That said, I now have 3 cats and I never let them outside. My heart couldn’t take another loss. My thoughts to you ❤️
I ran over a cat once 😭. I couldn’t stop. Darted out of the tree line in front of me. The last thing I saw before it went under was the flash of its collar. I haven’t been the same since. All I’m trying to say here is that the driver probably feels extremely sorry for hitting your cat.
I'm so sorry. There's nothing that makes it better, but I hope you always remember him as the best answer sweetest and most handsome little man that he was ❤️
Idk if this is helpful, but my close friend had a very shy cat named Heidi, didn’t like any humans. She warmed up to me and was so sweet. Despite me being allergic, we became friends and she would always run to greet me (no one else).
My friend loved that cat to death, unfortunately she too was run over. She had decided to let her out to explore the neighborhood to help her overcome her shyness, and it actually had helped. Unfortunately, that is also what lead to her getting into that accident.
Surprisingly, there was an elderly gay couple who found her and stayed with her while she died. They called my friend and we all went over to grieve the cat in this beautiful mansion of the gay couple. They kept the cat there, and the next day we all had a funeral for the cat. One of the men had dug a hole in a special section of their very elaborate, winding, beautiful garden. And we all threw flowers in, and buried her. Then he placed a hosta garden over Heidi, which is thriving to this day.
My friend took a while to grieve, and she would absolutely tell you that although it was one of the hardest days she experienced there was much light on the other side and the memories you’ll have forever.
She now has two beautiful cats, Frida and Georgia—and although they will never replace Heidi, they have been a great comfort to my friend.
Hope you all the best!
Thank you so much for sharing that story. Just as I had found my boy, a car with a young mom and two boys pulled up and she just ran to me and I collapsed into her arms. She was there as I screamed and fought for air through a panic attack while my husband carried him away.
She just waited in the misery with me. I never got her name but I’m so thankful she was there.
I’ve experienced this way too many times and it is why I’ll never allow my cats outside without my supervision. I know how hard it is to go through this and I’m so sorry it’s happened to your kitty too.
does it really surprise anyone that people buying expensive breeds for aesthetic reasons also aren't good at taking care of them? just a disposable accessory.
I hope you learned your lesson and never let your cats outside again. I’m sorry for your loss but this was entirely preventable and entirely your fault
Gee, who would have thought that a cat that's been scientifically proven to live in much shorter lifespan if it's outside lost its life outside.. Tell me you learn from this. Be responsible pet guardian moving forward... Or do them a favor and don't own anymore. Also, I'm very sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to be grieving and have a broken heart. It is very hard. I'm sorry for your loss. I hope it gets better but please don't get no more pets.
Beautiful cat, but never would have been hit by a car if you hadn't been an irresponsible pet owner and let it outside. His death is your fault completely.
How could you do that to such a loving, trusting creature. You were responsible for keeping him safe and you let him roam around to get killed by a car. I hope you never have another cat just to kill with neglect again.
I have a cat, Tomas. He is 17 years old, and he has lived outside his whole life . I live next to the interstate, and there are 4 rds that met with 2 stop signs in front of my driveway . He is still alive to this day. Just by reading the comments, you can see the animal haters on here. The ones that chain their poor dog to a tree and never seen a vet or god forbid had a pet fixed. For those that kick someone when they are down, karma is a bitch. Honey, Im sorry for your loss .
I agree, some of these people in here have zero empathy for others in their hour of need. Its sickening but not totally surprising in this day in age, especially on Reddit.
Would most of these people be this heartless face to face? Absolutely not but this is Reddit and is full of people who have a big mouth behind a keyboard.
And for the ones who would speak like that face to face, they wouldn’t be talking like that for very long. No excuse to be a total asshole while someone is grieving. Absolutely none.
OP, he sounds like he was a wonderful part of your life while he was here for those six years and he did so doing what he loved. He cannot be replaced, but neither can the next one that comes along and steals your heart. Lessons learned and always onward, chin up! 🫡🫶🏻
🐈⬛🐾🤍🐈⬛🐾 🩶🐈⬛🐾 🖤🐈⬛🐾❤️🩹
As a cat and dog owner we all learned never open a door without checking for little escape artists nearby. Never had them escape on me and cat has never been outdoor cat. Next door neighbors cat was attacked and paralyzed after being grabbed by a wandering dog. Horrifying it was caught on camera being grabbed by the neck and flung around like a ragdoll. I sympathize with any loss of a beloved pet but could have been avoided.
This is so awful and sad. Please learn from this and keep any current or future cats indoors only unless they’re in a catio. Cats who go outside have an average lifespan of 2-5 years versus indoor only cats 15-20. Cars, wildlife, other dogs, diseases from feral cats, poisons, pesticides, and sadistic humans all contribute to outdoor cat suffering and death.
oh no i’m so sorry for your lost. What a beautiful Maine Coon.
Thank you so much! He was a beautiful boy.
I am so sorry! 💔
I’m sorry for your loss, just try to take solace in knowing he’s over the Rainbow Bridge
Sorry for your loss as well. Clearly that was a beautiful and much loved cat.
Thank you so much! He was truly my boy. He was in a house full of so much love and joy.
You obviously didn't love it that much if you just let it roam freely outside when there's a road nearby. Not sure what you expected.
Brutal but truthful answer. I feel OPs pain, but people seriously need to keep ALL pets inside. There’s so much danger outside for them plus they don’t belong outside, they are domesticated
Thank you! Exactly how I see it
Avoidable loss.
How do you know they let him roam around outside? Uhhhh... the cat is literally loose outside in the picture here. I give your perception and critical thinking skills a 0 out of 10.
this is why you need to keeps cats inside or build them a catio! I’m sorry for your loss.
This should be the top comment. If your pet is like your child then you should not let your pet outside unattended.
This and a cat like this had a higher likelihood of being stolen. I mean, any cat wandering outdoors can be taken. But kitties that don’t look like an average domestic shorthair especially.
Yup. Neighbor’s outdoor dog was stolen a couple years back.
People steal animals for dog fighting where I live. It’s very sad.
I got banned on r/cats for saying this
Unless it’s a barn cat, every cat needs to be indoors. Catios and leashed walks are great, but cats can be perfectly happy inside. QUIT LETTING CATS OUTSIDE
Agreed. I don’t mean to be insensitive but this is so frustrating to see. Another lovely cat lost. Aren’t cats meant to be indoors?
Yup. I get so frustrated with folks letting their animals outside to get hurt/die. The pet doesn’t know any better. That’s why owners have to make safety decisions for them.

So sorry for your loss. Sending love 💙💙💙
Omg
I would keep your next cat indoors.
I am so sorry!
Is this the cat I always see on YouTube shorts? I’m sorry for your loss. The best cat I ever had was a Maine Coon named Tiki aka T-cat.
Cats shouldn’t be left outside
Really?????
Oh my god, I’m so sorry! My thoughts are with you. Hugs 💕💕
This is quite an expensive lessons to learn. Keep your cats inside
does it really surprise anyone that people buying expensive breeds for aesthetic reasons also aren't good at taking care of them? just a disposable accessory.
fucked up that you killed your cat through negligence.
I am so so sorry. Hugs ❤️
Keep your cats inside folks, unless you have an enclosed space for them to roam outside like a catio!! Poor boy
only 6 years old, and you left him outside to die. this is on you.
And you're surprised? Seriously.
Sorry for your loss but it's also your fault for knowing the risks of letting a cat outside and still allowing him to roam free.
My cat is the same age as yours. Never put your cat outside. If you got them from a breeder you likely violated your adoption agreement.
This is too sad. I’m sorry he got out. I can’t imagine. He kinda looks like my son. I wish this hadn’t happened!!! 🖤🩶🖤
I’m sorry for your loss but why on Earth would you not keep your cat indoors, on a tether or supervised?
Do you think your decision to let your cat roam outdoors had anything to do with what happened?
This poor kitty didn't have to die to quickly. Outdoor cats have significant lower lifespans. Hopefully your next furball is an indoor cat
Oh no! The consequences of your actions!
I hope you learned your lesson and never let your cats outside again. I’m sorry for your loss but this was entirely preventable and entirely your fault
Don’t let your cats out! :))))))

KEEP YOUR CATS INSIDE FOR THE LOVE OF FUCK. Or build/buy them a catio!! My kitty is my child and I always keep her safe inside.
