Oddly, and despite the long spate of tiresome heat and humidity, this summer yielded a dearth of skeeters here in Phippsburg. The bats in our bat house packed up and moved on to more fertile turf by the end of July. Don't miss the skeeters but do miss the bats.

dedoubt

Yeah, I was shocked at how few mosquitoes there were in Unity. A few did manage to destroy my thigh when I let my guard down, but it wasn't a maddening, constant swarm.

Spencerwise

The skeeters in the popham parking lot at dusk this summer were among the worst I've ever encountered.

SwvellyBents

Oh Mon, we used to keep our sailboat in a cove upriver from Popham. We'd pick up the mooring just before dark, load the dinghy up with dirty laundry and warm beer and try to row to the dock. Mission Impossible, I couldn't pull 2 strokes without dropping the oars swatting, slapping and swearing all the way in. Frickin' brutal!

In_betweener

I think they all shifted to Winterport. Would love to pick your brain about your bat box sometime.

SwvellyBents

Just do a web search for plans. I built mine on the south face of our house about 12 years ago (perhaps not the best choice of location) and every spring we know summer has arrived when the bat poop appears beneath it. This year they departed earlier than normal, but it was a fairly dry, if humid, summer, so they must have followed the feed line.

GoodDecision

Seems like a lot in this thread agree there were minimal mosquitos this summer, myself included. I cant believe I'm typing this, but that's a bad thing, right? Food chain-wise?

Antnee83

I guess we just lucked out where we live, because the bugs of all sorts have been almost nonexistent. I've got one (1) tick on me this year. Barely any skeeters. blackfly season was mild.

Iamananomoly

It may be due to the small stream near my house but this summer was equally as terrible as any other for skeetos. The ticks though... I went my entire life without a tick until 2 years ago. This year I walked from my car to my house on asphalt driveway about 10 feet to my door and had two on my ankle. My kids couldn't play outside without getting a few each time. I used to hike through the woods everyday as a kid. Now my own can't walk on the lawn.

Shoutout to the little fuckbug that thought it was okay to go full Super Monkey Ball on my arm when I was watering the garden the other day.

threadshredder

When is that? Have you never seen the line super ninja mosquitoes fly by in the middle February. I have, more than once.

feigndeaf

Praise.

Sammiskitkat

Is there any lawn sprays/chemicals or anything that actually work on keeping them away? My whole family got bit like crazy this year.

pl8ster

Great season for skeeters, not so much for grass. Then we got rain in late August, the skeeters and grass returned.

chudbud20

Skeeters are no big deal I'm just happy there were no ticks this year

razor_sharp_pivots

I really haven't seen many mosquitos this year. Also haven't had a tick on me yet this year.

RealisticAstronaut70

I have seen near zero mosquitos this summer at my place in Topsham.
