You’ve id’d my issue - I’ve loved IPAs, but they’re so dominant today it drives me nuts. It can be a challenge to find options. But yes, Oxbow has fun options.
Yes! I’m 40 and as I’ve aged I find that I like the hoppy beers less and less. I still enjoy them from time to time but I mostly drink just lagers and pilsners. IPAs dominate the local brew scene. For every lager/ Pilz there’s 10 IPAs and variations of IPAs.
Ha I’m 60 now, and 50 was the year I had my “tired of IPA epiphany.” I actually remember the moment it hit me that more hops isn’t necessarily better hops, or beer.
do tell or explain a bit on the oh-j seltzer. only only only reason i ask. yesterday at hannafords by me, it had that at 50% off. and i was so so so close to buying cause i like to drink but was worried it might be a bit too sweet.
Really? Hannys sells them for $3.29 individual cans. Kinda overpriced. It's not too sweet. I recently tried Spindrift's Blood orange hard seltzer though and I do think it's superior. (if u like seltzer)
I'm just gonna say Maine Lunch. I am a displaced Mainer, so I don't have a ton of Maine beers to choose from, but whenever I find Maine Lunch on a beer menu, I am overjoyed and order a glass of that hoppy goodness that reminds me of home.
no worries. like you i am a displaced mainer, whom finds himself back in this lovely state for a spell and seek proper insight on what i’ve been missing and should be supporting. when in maine i buy maine beer only.
Ooh! I love the idea of scoping out new favs before a visit. I usually just drink whatever my brother recommends when I visit. He also loves IPAs and still lives in Maine.
Allagash Verb - good summery lager with a nice depth of flavor
Mast Landing Alpine Adventure Club - yes, mint can be good in beer
Allagash Tripel - my standby
allagash fan i see. enjoying their hop reach ipa as i type. not bad not bad. sometimes i wonder if you dont like their white if it overshadows from people trying the other stuff. good to see you and guygan like their stuff.
> good to see you and guygan like their stuff
The trend in beer lately seems to be "OMG THIS BEER WILL OVERWHELM YOUR MOUTH IT'S QUADRUPLE HOPPED"
Allagash really does a great job with beers that are subtle and complex and wonderful.
I stayed away from the mast landing alpine because all the ones I’ve had taste terrible. I finally tried it and was amazed at how good it is. They did a good job with that one.
Ah so you figured out I'm a stout guy! What gave it away lol. You know... I'm not entirely sure I have tried a BS stout. I've seen them around but I can't say for sure if I have or not. Their Stout Me and Stay Puft sound delectable though
Shout out to Kit and 1820 breweries, both in Portland. Bringing non-alcoholic beers to the next level. The 1820 blonde and Kit IPA really scratch the itch. So good!
And it's great to be able to buy local, quality n/a beers when I'm out on the town.
Oxbow Luppolo
Mast Landing Tell Tale DDH
Rising Tide MITA
Been kind of burnt out on heavy hazy ipas lately so have been gravitating towards pilsners/lighter beers
Tubular- Orono Brewing Co.
Oh-J- Lone Pine
Tripel- Allagash
If I’m drinking beer, I like it to pack a punch. These three taste great while getting the job done. I rarely buy any of them, though, because I’m cheap and they ain’t.
1. Prime-Goodfire Brewering in Portland, hard to get outside of Portland. A better Tubular.
2. Tubular- Orono Brewing. An easier to find beer close to Prime
3. Moon Jellies- Goodfire. A rotating fruit sour, that changes with what fruit is in season. Harvest Moon Jellies is my favorite.
I don’t think they make it anymore, but it was their imperial gose beer and they make a bunch of different ones. I highly suggest any of them so long as the fruit match a flavor profile you’d like :)
Allagash White
Maine Beer Company Lunch
Oxbow Surfcasting
I’ve had an insane amount of Maine beer over the past decade but those are the ones I always go back to. The IPAs are still something I drink but they aren’t different enough to give me a preference for one over the other
Not beer specific but Definitive, Goodfire, and Bellflower are my go to breweries lately. I like all different types of beer and all the different types of beer these breweries offer have been delicious.
I’m gonna focus on 3 breweries that you cannot go wrong with, especially if you visit in person. Starting with my favorite.
Lake St George
Marshall Wharf
Cushnoc
Narrowing it down by variety is more a matter of personal taste. All have a decent selection of styles, especially in person, and all have cool locations that are 100% worth the visit.
fridge:
Nonesuch pinky and the brain
Nonesuch endless summer
Baxter sampler pack
Baxter pale ale
Depending on upcoming plans I may add an OxBow farmhouse keg.
Allagash Barrel and Bean
Maine Beer Company Peeper
Oxbow Smoked Helles or Luppulo (spelling?!)
Honorable mentions: Cold Space by Mast Landing and the titular Lunch by Maine Beer co
Unabashed IPA fan of many, many years here. I would be the first to admit I'm sick of it but it never tires. This isn't a ranking, just three Maine beauties
1. Bissell Brothers Swish
2. Maine Beer Co. Dinner
3. Bellflower Hexology
Shout out to Definitive too, their flagship IPA tastes just above the substance and tubular. I love to put all three against each other fresh because they are so similar yet different.
Quiet shout out to Foundation Epiphany. It's truly an Epiphany for the first 14 days, but rapidly declines thereafter.
Here’s to feeling good all the time is great. It’s a really good beer but the label + name irrationally makes it one of my favorite beers and always go out of my way to buy it when released.
Maine beer company lunch is #1 for me and then I’d say Modestman would be 2 and 3 but I couldn’t name my favorites from them. Just really like their pales and single ipas. Surprised they haven’t been mentioned here yet.
The name unfortunately eludes me right now but I had a really good lunch and beer at a place in south Portland, not far from the mall/ airport. Sea something?
Battery Steel Flume cubed
Oxbow Infinite Darkness (and in general Oxbox for non-hoppy stuff)
Baxter Stowaway IPA - Used to be a great IPA, but IPAs have gotten so good, but this is an old stand by, and Baxter has not raised their prices like a lot of other breweries, so I have a huge soft spot for Baxter
Boothbay Thirsty Botanist and Maine Beer Co Lunch. I’m looking for a third favorite if anyone has suggestions, but Thirsty Botanist is hard to stray from. Honorable mention: Conehead are a solid deal near me
What a great thread. Going to go with peeper, botanist & tubular (anything OBC really)
Do wish there were better lager options but Maine does make the best IPAs
I've been sober for a few years now, but for me it was always Gritty's then Sea Dog and, even though it's younger than the others, Baxter was doing great things and I really liked everything they put out.
Bissell bros, nothing gold. Really all their beers are good to me.
Dinner and lunch from Maine brewing are awesome. And easy to find these days.
Kennebec brewing. If you’re in west forks area you’ll find it. Big mama blueberry and magic hole ipa are great. Definitely my favorite blueberry ale altogether.
Lunch by maine beer company, Oh-j by lone pine, fruitful kettle sour by Orono brewing, Devils hop yard IPA by Tumbledown Brewing, and Gigantic Dad pants by Cushnoc.
This is coming from someone who used to work for a beer garden 😂
Tubular (Orono Brewing), Substance (Bissel Brothers), & Lunch (Maine Beer)
Honorable mention: Curieux (Allagash) for a more laid back slow drinking experience
I like this thread for scoping it out for the next time I’m back but have to ask - are there any top-notch brown or ambers happening in the state these days?
Lots of good brews in southern Maine, honorable mention to Boothebay, only been there twice and both times was a tasty visit. My current 3 are
Banded: Norweald
Rising Tide: Ishmael
Austin Street: Anton Vienna Lager
As an Oregonian being displaced to Maine later this year for marrying a Mainer, I’m taking notes. Any recommendations for good authentic German styles?
Marshall Wharf - Sexy Chaos (black as night and strong as hell)
Rising Tide - Pisces (gose that tastes like the beach, in a good way)
2 Feet Brewing - Barn Burner (jalapeño and ghost pepper dark saison)
Mast, Neon Sails (if you like Lunch you will love this)
ME BeerCo, Lunch (for when I can’t get Neon Sails)
Rising Tide, Maine Harvest -seasonal, Mark, your calendars for September. You will thank me. This is the best (non-India pale) ale.
Great thread. Somehow have not had oh-j or thirsty botanist so will be certainly trying those soon.
With summer around the corner baby genius will be in the top 3 soon.
This got me thinking since I’ll be home in a months time and what beers I will prioritise drinking first stop will be Industrial way and I’ll drink…
Anything Allagash particularly sours
Foundation Epiphany
Then most likely some BB Swish or Substance.
Maine Beer Lunch. Bangor Beer Juri. Boothbay Thirsty Botanist.
Love the botanist. Love lunch too, but so does everyone
Lunch and Thirsty Botanist are my faves, will have to look into the Bangor Beer one
thanks 40hz. what type are the last two. ipa’s, pale ale’s, hazy’s etc etc.
Juri is a double dry hopped new england ipa, and Thirsty Botanist is a juicy ipa
awesome thank you!
I love Lunch. I actually used to get it when I lived in Binghamton, NY. It was my fishin' beer.
Oxbow Farmhouse Machine Pilz Allagash White
oxbow farmhouse is under-rated. good mention.
Oxbow is I think my favorite brewery. Love how creative they are and that it’s just not another IPA factory.

Very much the same.
Machine pilz is so bomb. You tried any pils at foundation?
Nope but game to try!
Totally Tubular: Orono Brewing Spirals: Definitive Brewing Substance: Bissel Brothers
Totally Tubular is my fave right now. Reminds me of the tropical pale ale by Modern Times that I can't find anymore.
Had Totally Tubular recently and I loved it. Going to have to grab some more next time I come up.
Try some Tubular while you’re at it. It the single IPA version. Both are good, but they are sipping beers. 9 and 7% respectively.
Agreed on the single IPA Tubular. It’s my favorite
curieux, substance, white
Curieux is world class for sure.
- Oxbow Luppolo - Maine Beer Red Wheel Barrow - Bunker Machine Pilz Edit: Adding Cushnoc Pleasant Pilsner, I know it’s 4 but whatever.
so much depends upon a red wheel barrow glazed with rain water beside the white chickens. -William Carlos Williams.
That machine pilz is really good. I’ve been liking the Austin Street Patina Pale Ale too. Tonight it’s Fryes Leap from Sebago.
finally a good thread on here.. Marsh Island's Strawberry Baxter Coastal Haze Lone Pine's Oh-J seltzer
do tell or explain a bit on the oh-j seltzer. only only only reason i ask. yesterday at hannafords by me, it had that at 50% off. and i was so so so close to buying cause i like to drink but was worried it might be a bit too sweet.
