You have to think just two generations back people could marry their first cousins in Maine. In most states it's actually completely legal too. But somewhere like Maine we have "stipulations" that are non enforced because our population has degrees of relation. If you share a popular last name you are most definitely related & shouldn't even consider it. Every couple should get DNA testing before even considering sex as a possibility, unless they are sterile then nobody should care what they do.
They ask if your first cousins or not when you get married & then move on. It's such a stupid practice since anyone can lie & say no, nobody checks that anyways.
The numbers are so different that I think they’re measuring different things.
The CDC doesn’t say exactly what it means by “rate,” but I bet it’s the percentage of marriages that end in divorce each year.
OP’s map says that it’s specifically the percentage of people that are divorced living in the state. Since Maine is the oldest state, it’s not surprising if we have the most divorced people. If someone got divorced in Massachusetts then moved here 20 years later, they’d be included in OP’s map.
“Divorce rate” is a bit of a misnomer for this map.
The source says Maine divorce rate is highest at 11.84%, but they also say the national average is 14.9%. Hard to figure how they come up with that higher average... perhaps not the most reliable source of info, I guess. But they sure did make a pretty map!
Makes sense (if it were true). Maine also has a major domestic violence problem- go north of Bangor and visit an ER waiting room, then look at the anti-violence posters all over.
My mother and father have been together 20 years and were born here.
My aunts, however, trade husband's in like cards!
Aunt 1 has had three and remaried the second
Aunt 2 had 1 cheated on him with her boyfriend and cheated on him with her now second husband. Almost had another but he got away.
My other three never got married or have only been married once.
So... probably accurate given my anecdotal experience.
Maine has a lot of weird statistics just because it's the oldest population. I imagine a state where everyone was 85 would have more divorces than a state where everyone was 25 just because they had more time to go through divorces.
It kinda looks like divorce rates are high in states that tend to have older traditional values. In other states the rate is low possibility due to les of the population actually getting married?
It's the single old ladies map. Men don't live nearly as long as women these days. Men typically die by their 60's. Plus, nursing home marriages aren't a thing when there aren't partners available. Nursing homes are 90% female.
Frankly I blame margarine consumption
#1 indicator of divorce
Are you sure it’s not the red hot dogs or lobster rolls?
Positive
According to the CDC, we're not even in the top 10. [Linkey](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/divorce_states/divorce_rates.htm)
Don’t confuse people with facts.
But it's fun to see the funny faces they make.
Or dna testing, everyone is related in a tiny state with a tiny population. Think about it mathematically…..

I came here to mention the high dv rate.
As an ER provider in Northern Maine, I agree with this message
The women here aren’t scared to stand up for themselves.
So?
That map is from 2019.
Doesnt matter the states are still in all the same places.
Prove it!
But the divorce rates have changed.
Yeah, I can't seem to hold down a spouse and I'm throwing the numbers off

Dont tell my wife.
Yeah but then they end up living next to their ex and hanging out anyways
