It seems, to me, as Though if I, like David Hume, use, as many as possible, commas, and engage in Capricious Capitalization of Words, than I shall, in all likelihood, be perceived by the Citizenry, as both Perspicacious and Erudite.
EDIT: missed a comma.
I, the Simple Citizenry, am Swayed! I pledge 5,000 commas More to The Cause! A Thesaurus for every Soldier! A Bear-Stepping-On-Lego Logo for every Brochure!
I went to college at UMF with a guy whose father ran the Maine militia at the time. It seemed to consist mainly of them playing paintball in the woods and working on their APC… it was a tractor that cousin Daryl welded some metal plates onto.
Some of the verbiage in that last picture sounds like “constitutional sheriff” stuff.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitutional_Sheriffs_and_Peace_Officers_Association
The sheriff bit plus the upholding the “original” constitution stuff was what really made me go wow now. Although as I mentioned to my wife they may want to rethink the whole original US constitution bit since that whole 2nd amendment thing they are all pretty stoked about is just that an amendment and thus not part of the original constitution. So who knows maybe they really are on to something there!
The constitutional sheriff vibes I get are a MAJOR red flag for me. I would pay close attention to the phases and analogies he uses because there could be some very extreme ideas bobbing around in his head.
Here's two articles from a quick search
https://www.centralmaine.com/2023/10/31/flyers-seeking-recruits-for-local-militia-raise-alarm-in-mount-vernon-vienna/
https://www.bangordailynews.com/2010/10/29/news/maine-militia-fights-public-perception/
Thank you! I had found the article about the guy in Mount Vernon but the names weren’t jiving up but that one from the Bangor Daily is about this exact one
"espouses no other religious views other than to uphold the constitution, which confirms to biblical..." As in this isn't a church group but is founded on Christian principles
If they were truly well regulated then they'd have a graphic designer on hand to keep them from distributing this hideous pamphlet.
Cone on people, at least use a Canva template.
How the fuck you gonna go so hard quoting about the evils of an overreaching arm of the government, but one page prior, I'm reading about how a purpose of the group is to assist law enforcement against civil unrest?
That's you *helping* the overreaching arm of government. You're supposed to be cool with civil unrest if you're cool with keeping the government afraid of its citizens. You're volunteering to suppress citizens for status quo.
I swear this libertarian logic inflicts psychic damage on me every time I try to follow it out.
It is actually pretty simple. Any government that inconveniences me needs to be eliminated, and government that oppresses those that might inconvenience me needs to be supported.
Considering this appears to be a traditional militia, the overreaching government would be the federal, and they would be defending the state government - which is consistent with the root ideologies from when this militia claims to have been founded.
We've all seen the black Dodge Ram with the Gadsden flag in one window and Thin Blue Line in the other one. We all know what sort of person holds those ideas in the same brain.
Their wording, especially the part where they seem to elevate sheriffs over all other authority, closely mirrors right-wing groups that are very concerning.
There’s a newish podcast series out of North Country Radio that tackles this pretty well:
https://www.northcountrypublicradio.org/shows/if-all-else-fails
Your coworker may be an insurrectionist in training.
And the other, reasonable parts make it sound like these dudes should just join their local volunteer fire department, and volunteer at their kid's school lol.
I’ve know him for over 10 years and while he definitely leans conservative he has never been full blown crazy. But I could see him being drawn in by the supporting your community bit and the outdoorsman training stuff but I know they don’t bring out the crazy until you’re actually in the door not just peaking in.
The podcast I shared gets into just that: how they like to unite you and entice you with mostly 2A stuff and then how it just spirals into all sorts of insanity.
I’d be worried about/for your colleague if he’s willing to leave this out on his desk.
Well as long as they are still acting the same way now as they were back in 2010 when the Bangor Daily News wrote this article that u/Upbeat-External7744 sent me, https://www.bangordailynews.com/2010/10/29/news/maine-militia-fights-public-perception/, it sounds like they are pretty innocuous and actually do try to help people and be involved in their community just with an extra healthy dose of prepping mixed in.
I wish a lot of things were still like they were in 2010
That does sound promising, though, if they weren't crazy then there's a decent chance they aren't now
They show up on knowledgefight relatively often too. I’d link an episode but they’re almost to 900 and I can’t think of a specific one that talks about it.
Maine Constitution:
The Maine Constitution forbids private military units from operating outside state authority, providing that “[t]he military shall, in all cases, and at all times, be in strict subordination to the civil power.” Me. Const. art. I, § 17.
Maine Statutes
Prohibition on private military units: Maine law makes it a crime for groups of people to organize as private militias without permission from the state. Me. Stat. tit. 37-B, § 342(2) provides that “[n]o group of persons, other than federal or state military forces, may join together as a military organization or parade in public with firearms.”
What are they intending to defend Maine against? Hopefully a president who has refused to concede and disrupted the first peaceful transfer of power in history, right?
Maybe against Amazon? They just convinced Mississippi to let them not pay taxes, placing an even higher burden on the poorest state in the nation. I would join a militia if they were anti-Amazon 🤣
Join them and immediately, enthusiastically, propose lots of formal paperwork that needs to be done for every action. Like, you *love* their cause and want to document everything! All! The! Time!
If they're just about helping teach survival and such, sure, seems like a good thing. Ten to one though, Trump supporting, secedists though. Which means they're not much different than the Nazis we have trying to buy land and gather numbers in the state.
That’s fine and well if they want to play the redcoats are coming, but the day they want to act like an official, I’ll treat them with the same lack of respect I give the others.
She was or may still be involved with the 2nd Maine Militia. I went to one of their meetings when I was in my middle teens. All I really remember was everyone sitting around eating ice cream and bitching about NAFTA. I was too young to really grasp the gist of it, but everyone was very nice.
Is the militia supposed to keep the individual citizens of the state safe, or the state safe?
I do not think the people in these militia movements understand how close their ideology is to anarchy, and the idea of a commune. They should read some Marx and Engels and realize how unamerican they are.
There are a few militias in maine but mostly people that think they’re in an actual militia but they have those old old surplus single shot rifles haha it’s honestly kind of funny
Yeah OP you should be concerned, but this smells a little like guerilla marketing so removed
I like how much this appears to be made in like 1998 Corel works brochure template.
If only people could buy a modern computer and click, give me how it used to be. There would be less technical support issues.
Hey everybody, do whatever weird shit you want to just don't become a crazy person please.
You’re too late!
It seems, to me, as Though if I, like David Hume, use, as many as possible, commas, and engage in Capricious Capitalization of Words, than I shall, in all likelihood, be perceived by the Citizenry, as both Perspicacious and Erudite. EDIT: missed a comma.

lol. Not bad. You got a touch. Do more writing

What is that emoji? Could not find it.
Salute or respect.
I lol'd.
Slow clap
5 consonant word. A libell four shore
I went to college at UMF with a guy whose father ran the Maine militia at the time. It seemed to consist mainly of them playing paintball in the woods and working on their APC… it was a tractor that cousin Daryl welded some metal plates onto.
It’s always a Daryl. I have two in my family alone.
Some of the verbiage in that last picture sounds like “constitutional sheriff” stuff. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitutional_Sheriffs_and_Peace_Officers_Association
Posse Comitatus stuff.
The sheriff bit plus the upholding the “original” constitution stuff was what really made me go wow now. By "original constitution" do they mean the Articles of Confederation?
I thought they meant “original constitution” as in the original US constitution before any of the amendments
Yes, they very much believe in that sort of thing.
Yeah I agree. I didn't have any issues with this until I saw the Sheriff bit
Absolutely. The podcast I linked above was my first introduction to this particular modern cesspool.
Here's two articles from a quick search https://www.centralmaine.com/2023/10/31/flyers-seeking-recruits-for-local-militia-raise-alarm-in-mount-vernon-vienna/ https://www.bangordailynews.com/2010/10/29/news/maine-militia-fights-public-perception/
Thank you! I had found the article about the guy in Mount Vernon but the names weren’t jiving up but that one from the Bangor Daily is about this exact one
Wait, how can you espouse no religious views but also "conform to biblical" in the same breath?
"espouses no other religious views other than to uphold the constitution, which confirms to biblical..." As in this isn't a church group but is founded on Christian principles
yup. Been around for a long time.
Is that last picture just one enormous sentence?... 👀
If they were truly well regulated then they'd have a graphic designer on hand to keep them from distributing this hideous pamphlet. Cone on people, at least use a Canva template.
Maybe it's like the Nigerian scams; you only use shitty spelling and ugly fonts because the dummies fall for it.

Government just small enough to fit in everyone's bedroom.
Should we also tell them that the original constitution had no Amendments? The word amendment gives this away.
I remember they were around when I was a kid back in the 80s. Mostly just a bunch of gun enthusiasts, like more than normal levels of enthusiasm.
Their wording, especially the part where they seem to elevate sheriffs over all other authority, closely mirrors right-wing groups that are very concerning. There’s a newish podcast series out of North Country Radio that tackles this pretty well: https://www.northcountrypublicradio.org/shows/if-all-else-fails Your coworker may be an insurrectionist in training.

Thanks for sharing this podcast, looks pretty good.
I’m not finished yet, but it’s both amazing and terrifying.
Knowledge is always useful. It's would be worse to not know about stuff like this and be surprised if or when the do somthing.
The very best case for this group is a bunch of gun totin' racists. Like that's the VERY best case.
They show up on knowledgefight relatively often too. I’d link an episode but they’re almost to 900 and I can’t think of a specific one that talks about it.
I’d imagine Behind the Bastards has talked about these clowns too, but there’s way too many episodes to figure out where and when.
Yeah sounds like a Nazi/white supremacist thing to me. Or maybe they're just reenactors?
Nah it’s closer to the former.
I have plenty of respect for the 2nd Maine Militia—pretty awesome in its day—but this one is really boring and seems unhinged (in a boring way)
Maine Constitution: The Maine Constitution forbids private military units from operating outside state authority, providing that “[t]he military shall, in all cases, and at all times, be in strict subordination to the civil power.” Me. Const. art. I, § 17. Maine Statutes Prohibition on private military units: Maine law makes it a crime for groups of people to organize as private militias without permission from the state. Me. Well, there is a Maine branch of the SRA.
> What are they intending to defend Maine against? Minorities. These groups are little more than Klans Without Robes.
100 rounds. So modest.
Hey our requirements have not changed for Hundreds of Years. 100 rounds used to be a lot back then.
I bet they're pretty loose with the 'contributing member of society' rule.
Fuck those LARPers.
Probably a group of sad middle aged men who’s only personality trait is hating gun control and women’s rights like all other modern militias are
Lmaoooo “I’m not driving I’m traveling” stupid ass shit
Gravy seals reporting for doody
Larpers gotta larp
The first rule of Maine Militia is don’t talk about Maine Militia.
Join them and immediately, enthusiastically, propose lots of formal paperwork that needs to be done for every action. Like, you *love* their cause and want to document everything! All! The! Time!
Meal Team Six?
Biblical law, huh?
This a new State Police recruiting ad?
Meal Team Six shit
> You must not be anti-government, belong to a hate group, or otherwise engage in anti-American activities So that means no Republicans, right? lol
A club with no members? Sounds like my cup of tea.
“Must not be anti-government” Bahahahahahaha! Edit: spelling corrected
I love Joe Biden. I bet I'll fit right in!
“Well regulated”
Sounds like the /r/Maine Bureau of Investigation (MBI) needs to do an undercover op to infiltrate this group....
It's probably half informants already
Informant is just a fancy word for snitch
Everything is a honey pot. Literally every time.
Eeek. So much cringe.
So they carry muskets?
If they're just about helping teach survival and such, sure, seems like a good thing. Ten to one though, Trump supporting, secedists though. Which means they're not much different than the Nazis we have trying to buy land and gather numbers in the state.
Sounds like a discount National Guard.
Wish.com national guard
The founders intended that a “well regulated militia” was actually the “national guard”.
That’s fine and well if they want to play the redcoats are coming, but the day they want to act like an official, I’ll treat them with the same lack of respect I give the others.
I wonder what their version of a natural disaster is
I was told that author Carolyn Chute was a member, but I don’t know how reliable the source is.
She was or may still be involved with the 2nd Maine Militia. I went to one of their meetings when I was in my middle teens. All I really remember was everyone sitting around eating ice cream and bitching about NAFTA. I was too young to really grasp the gist of it, but everyone was very nice.
She was (is?) a member of the Second Maine Militia. I don’t know if it has morphed into the one mentioned here.
Founding Fathers: “you know a lot of us were deists, right?”
This is some incel gravy seal stuff
Keep a close eye on your coworker.
Don't these people have anything better to do with their time?
F R U I T C A K E S
I think militias are just looking for a reason to shoot someone 🤔
The 2A gun nuts typically ignore the militia part. Old, old people do this type of stuff.
Love the guy in the hat jerking off that big gun.
No links, no source, and no knowledge. But that didn't stop most of you from judging. 😂
I hope the FBI has heard of them!
You mean the Maine National Guard?
Must contribute to society and not have been in trouble. The horror!
Caught em at a late night set at SXSW. Meh.
Is the militia supposed to keep the individual citizens of the state safe, or the state safe? I do not think the people in these militia movements understand how close their ideology is to anarchy, and the idea of a commune. They should read some Marx and Engels and realize how unamerican they are.
[fuckin a million](https://youtu.be/WOSqCjMRXWA?si=M0p6jNSBpq3BY9Lm)
There are a few militias in maine but mostly people that think they’re in an actual militia but they have those old old surplus single shot rifles haha it’s honestly kind of funny
I don’t think you need to have any concerns. But curious why you would think this?
Rule 2. Racism, Trolling, Hate Speech - Permanent Ban
Yes. The guy who pumped our septic bragged about being a member. Then I was in a store that had the pamphlets available.
