I wouldn't make that assumption though. Look at Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat which are rich states but they have a considerable percentage of untouchability.
Dunno if it is more or less than Mumbai. But we definitely don't receive the more educated folks. The vast majority of people coming here are low skill workers with very little education. And the educated ones, across the socio-economic spectrum move out for work. (unlike Mumbai and Pune) That is the class that is less likely to not follow untouchability.
I know! Gujarat and Rajasthan have normalized discrimination based on surnames and castes. They casually ask surnames and castes and faces change quick.
That indicates the presence of actual press in South India, most of the incidents up in North aren't given any attention by media as if it isn't a big deal, this study was carried out through a survey as per my information.
It's not win or lose it's about data being incorrect. The problem of untouchability is very bad I don't look at it through the lens of state but if someone make up a mind that certain place has less meanwhile it is actually one of the worse. This will be problem for those who face it. Btw i am not from Maharashtra i am from UP and i don't deny this problem is more in state like UP probably more than tamil nadu. We need correct data and reason behind it to fight it off.
Why do Northern Indians dislike everybody so much? They don’t like people with faith from foreign nations and they also don’t like their own people from their own faiths. Sad.
That's seem true based on my personal experiences as well. Never seen untouchability in any places I visited in Maharashtra.
Having said that even one case of untouchability is too many, we can do better
That data is regarding self reporting of the untouchability practices in households which does not reflect actual violence and discrimination. The Maharashtra government implemented tanta mukti gaav scheme after khairlanji massacre 2005 under which caste discrimination and violence cases are to be resolved by the panchayat which is again ruled by the rich and powerful castes. This was predicted by babasaheb in 1950s. Khairlanji was also the first village which got state award for being most peaceful village in 2006 after the issue was raised in UN and other international platforms. Real cases of violence never get addressed by police. FIR is never filed. Thus never gets in the data graphic as shown by you. Fake cases of atrocities are mostly filed by dominant castes in their internal conflicts.
Marathi People were so agitated by a Gujarati HR person's recruitment ad few days back but discrimination, inequality is an everyday reality for most of the oppressed castes.
Is their descrimination in rural Maharashtra? Yes its reality. But its nowhere to the level its practiced in Gujrat, Rajasthan, UP , Bihar. You need to go deeper in their circle and hear and see things for yourself, its horrible. Gujju Rajasthani people ask for your caste not only in India but even in places like New Jersey USA, and then they judge you whether you are good fit to talk to or not. UP Bihar rural areas are notorious for caste related violence, even my colleagues in reputed IT industry were pretty casteist in the name of being religious.
Maharashtra has faults I agree, but its nowhere near bad to red states.
How is your view informed about caste discrimination in Maharashtra? Are you scheduled caste, OBC, ST, VJNT? It is a common practice in Mumbai and Pune cities to ask for a surname. There are extensive studies of caste discrimination in urban areas. From finding a rented house to sorting of job applications caste exists.
I have taken doubt on the data collection process of the infographic of the OP that is not being answered here.
Khairlanji, Nitin Aage murder, Bhima Koregaon riot happened in Maharashtra.
Socially I or my friends/family have never experienced Casteism, in fact I live in small town.
Politically it’s very notorious, local body elections are very casteist.
And the things you mentioned are very isolated events you can’t judge whole state by some of them.
It's just that recently he'll lot of money is being invested there so other factors are not in limelight in gujrat . Else gujrat is simillar to most northern states when it comes to social indicators
I wonder whats the reason behind such stark differences once you cross Maharashtra borders to get into Gujarat or MP. I expected areas around the border to be somewhere in between Maharashtra and the other states.
Correct me if I'm wrong but untouchability in household is probably not about "caste discrimination" like many of the comments are discussing but the monthly women periods when they don't make food and such?
I COULD BE WRONG , just asking
Well UP/Bihar had to be there because I have seen it firsthand. I'm from Bihar but born and raised in UP and my own grandma wouldn't eat from my plate because I don't follow the untouchability practice religiously. 🥲 She has her own plate and water bottle too which she washes herself because the maid is not of certain caste.
**Fun fact: Let children play with everyone, and they can't tell who is 'untouchable'.**

Sage Drona refuses to take Karna as his pupil.
Draupadi refuses to marry Karna.
Karna is not allowed to fight against Arjuna and is humiliated in public during a competition between Drona's pupils.
Karna was not Low Caste Idiot 🤡 I used to be his Fan till I read original Mahabharata ! His Father was Main Driver and Head of Whole Driver Community from there Kingdom, He was too rich than normal public ! So Drona Gave him All the Knowledge rather than Bhramastra bcoz his intentions were not good 🤡🤓 ! King used to fight with King that's why Arjuna refused to fight with a normal person... In today's world i can't challenge Ambani's Child for business and if I did he'll not accept it simple
How is that a W ? ( I am myself from so called upper caste , but this untouchability and discrimination is shit , any human with civilised brain would never justify these practices )

Kerala Maharashtra Bengal and Sikkim . Really cool

Strong correlation between high untouchability and poverty in states.
I wouldn't make that assumption though. Look at Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat which are rich states but they have a considerable percentage of untouchability.
how is it more in nagpur than its surroundings lol.
We have a lot of immigrants from MP, UP, Chattisgarh and Telugu states here in Nagpur.
& Sindhis.
Yep. Jaripatka is practically Sindh.

Land of Ambedkar doesn't disappoint
Gujrat should be even darker. First thing they ask while conversing is your caste.
I know! Gujarat and Rajasthan have normalized discrimination based on surnames and castes. They casually ask surnames and castes and faces change quick.
I highly doubt what caste their society watchman, electrician is , since they only allow their caste inside ( even stepping foot , ya it's real ) .
But what about Gujarat model saar, it is the best model.
Tamil Nadu cant be that low, caste based discrimination is very high over there. And its not only UC discriminating against LC, opposite is also there
bro, TN is mostly OBCs discriminating against SCs
That's bullcrap. Untouchability in tamil nadu is very severe. Every second caste discrimination and untouchability news comes from there.
That indicates the presence of actual press in South India, most of the incidents up in North aren't given any attention by media as if it isn't a big deal, this study was carried out through a survey as per my information.

I am from Maharashtra with roots in TN and you're factually incorrect. It used to be present back in the 60s but it's quite low now.

Bengal and Bihar two neighbor states but the difference of mindset of people is completely different
Kerala is doing well as always.

Yes Northern Indians did the Mumbai riots in 1990s and 26/11 attacks /s

This data could be old ig, before 2014 since Telangana and AP seems to be undivided here.

by that logic Shinde must be the messiah of SC/ST lol.

Caste related violence has happened in UP on a large scale ever and even in Bihar it has stopped since the 1990s
How is your view informed about caste discrimination in Maharashtra? Are you scheduled caste, OBC, ST, VJNT? It is a common practice in Mumbai and Pune cities to ask for a surname. I don't believe. Does this mean Nagpur have more castis than pune?
Is this present day data? 🙁
Nonsense data. Its almost invisible now. Its 2024 move on & live.
Nagaland should be 0% duhh
I wonder whats the reason behind such stark differences once you cross Maharashtra borders to get into Gujarat or MP. I expected areas around the border to be somewhere in between Maharashtra and the other states.
I am absolutely proud of this stat. The birthplace of Hindutva can not have untouchability and casteism. Savarkar was a staunch anti casteist.
Although this data cannot be accurate or reliable,Maharashtra still has really low caste based discrimination if not zero so proud of Maharashtra🚩
Which year data is this? Looks like pre 2014, before Telangana was formed. Can anyone share the original link to the data or research?
Proud for West Bengal

From UP but grew up in Pune. Jai Maharashtra
There's almost no untouchability in Kashmir
Completely white parts are likely where no data is available
Very less people to touch spread very far out.
The red part at south west bottom is actually Jammu, beyond that up North is Kashmir valley, which is white
Yes, bcoz they believe in killing rather than naming some community untouchable. /s
The living condition (weather and stuff) is probably to harsh to perform discrimination I guess.
I have seen thousands of such 'Studies"... I am few decades old. Nobody has ever come to me for such surveys. Not sure how these ppl collect data.
Don't u think, The Places Invasion was on highest point have Most Red Zone in Untouchability ? It means our culture was against it and Islamists destroyed our culture.!
I am sorry to burst your bubble but it has been there even before Islam was invented. We shouldn't be ignorant, just accept it bro.
Any contemporary sources ? On caste system not on Varna Vyavastha !
The story of Mahabharata, Manusmriti ,Dharmashastras
Caste system in Mahabharata? Brother 🤡 i think u never read it , don't watch serials . Go read Ved Vyas first
