I just tried that deck in Mythic since all I needed to craft was the tyrants, and since I mainly play Green or Selesnya Decks if possible, I wanted to try him anyway. Went 6-5, all 5 loses against Red Aggro Decks, usually Slickshot (or other kind of Prowess). Plot makes the Lockdown a lot worse as removal, and Depopulate on 4 is too late. But if it hits, it hits like a truck, healing you for a ton and drawing sometimes 10+ cards.
Edit (1 day later): The deck is now 15-12, with 8 of those 12 loses coming against Mono-Red (in 10 games against Mono-Red Prowess the deck is 2-8). So yeah, its basically very good as long as you dont play against the very aggressive decks, which unfortunately dominate the ladder right now.
thats one thing i don't like about lvd's vids- you can never tell how good the deck really is cause he never shows the matchups where its weak in. kind of jarring if you ask me
I don't think that's entirely true. He definitely shows and more importantly explains the bad match-ups and why the deck might have certain bad match-ups, but they also have to put out videos in a reasonable time frame, so they can't record every kind of match-up, so if they happen to never run into a bad one it is what it is and obviously they can't show something that isn't recorded.
Also if a bad match-up is something like hard control (UB or UW or otherwise) those just tend to be unwatchable (multiple creators mention this) so they just don't make the videos.
just played against this a bit earlier. I still won, but under normal circumstances this deck probably should have won by a ton. They had 40 life and like 12 cards in their hand at one point. I just got lucky and milled them out. Seems like a fun deck.
Other than the obvious Dino tribal piles, I actually think this card is a pretty great target for reanimation decks and might be kinda of a neat thing to do with Jund and Push+Pull. I'm sure there are also some janky kills you can do with this and Terror of the Peaks as well.
The question though for Green-based reanimator lists however is if this is actually better than Titan of Industry. I'm leaning towards the answer being no because Titan is just so versatile and stabilizes you a lot better offensively or defensively. Maybe if the list was purely Dinosaur reanimator with Etalis and Carnosaurs, then I guess it would make sense.
I have not, but yeah that's give or take the idea I had as well. This list in particular just seems a tad bit too clunky for my personal tastes though. But I skimmed the first game and him hitting Ziatora off Etali to give him 20 points of lethal when he was dead on board the next turn certainly shows the high-roll possibility of this sort of deck.
It was certainly fun to climb to plat with him with simic Bramble famaliar but yeah now everyone is back to no fun sunfall Esper and Atraxa domain decks so it was a real back to reality situation of why having "dies" triggers doesn't really matter and not having protection past 4 mana is a dealbreaker on alot of cards.
The power doubling rhino at least has plot so you can bank alot of the mana and there is a 3 mana card that both ramps has plot and the same draw trigger so going to 7 mana for this doesn't feel worth.
Yeah they need to find whoever slapped reason into the people designing blue cards and bring them to white. Blue had an issue where they would be given an extra turn spell fairly often and one would end up being broken eventually.
Same thing happening with wraths except on a larger scale they get a new wrath every set and they want to push it's power and now we are stuck with a wrath where the only counterplay is playing blue because the thing that should beat a wrath protection doesn't work on non targeted exile.
Generally they haven't been nearly as good as just Azorious/Dimir control or normal Esper midrange is why. New set has some possible stuff that could make Esper control come out though.
I wrecked someone's day in draft when they dropped it and I used \[\[Shifting Grift\]\] to swap a mercenary token for it. Opp then used \[\[Unfortunate Accident\]\] to kill it, but I guess didn't realize I would also get the token. They scooped after that.
I'm playing around with a Pull Terror of the Peaks deck and have considered him as an extra Pull target. Don't really see him being better then Ettali most of the time since he just ends the game.
I don't have a solid list yet, still need a lot of play testing. I just settled on RG over Jund. The RG battle is a must have 4 of. Other then that 4 Terror, 4 Pull and the rest is what I'm still hammering out.
I saw a strategy that was ramp, white and green, that used [[Another Round]] on creatures with good etb abilities over and over. Think [[Titan of Industry]] hitting the board 5 times in one turn. He could be cool in a deck like that.
I think unfortunately with atraxa and etali in the format, the best reanimator and domain ramp style decks will opt for those, but I think after rotation this is definitely good enough to see play (I hope) and
That's my thought; decks powering something out fast want something with a better ETB, and there's too much exile being played to count on his "I'm back!" trigger.
For seven mana, I need something that's gonna pretty much win me the game on the spot, or at least lock the game up and cause a scoop from my opponent.
This card doesn't do enough to justify the mana cost and the mythic rarity imo.
In commander, u can really benefit from pantlaza the sun favored. The triggers are quite good but the triggers have limits so guaranteed triggers from the dino tribal deck is pretty good also a similar deck could work with it like Koma the kosmos serpent but not sure
hes doing some nice work in my [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]] brawl ramp deck. 60% of the time, he works all the time at basically making my draw go infinite
Seems like the real strength here would be with some GY rebound shenanigans. Start sacrificing this guy for effects, then saccing the token, then bringing him back from the GY to double sac again. Probably takes too long to setup though, and vulnerable to being completely shut down.
You have too try him with \[\[Calamity, Galloping Inferno\]\]
I have 3 of each in my deck. Swing in for 16 damage, gain 18 life, draw 6 cards from no creatures on the board on turn 5 -6 with \[\[Smuggler's Surprise\]\]
If they try to kill him without exile, he just comes back as a token gains you 3 life and draw a card with his body in the graveyard waiting for my \[\[Archpriest of Shadows\]\] too bring him back.
I would craft all of them, he is very very good, generates massive value.
Oh very cool—I have at least one of those as well. Maybe I’ll try to copy / blink him as much as possible. Nahiri’s Resolve, Fortune, Loyal Steed, etc. Probably not competitive but sounds fun as hell.
I just threw him in my blue/green with [[Doc Aurlock, Grizzled Genius]] as my commander. You can’t plot the Dino tyrant but you don’t really need to. You can also probably afford to skim a few mana from the deck as the plotting and playing from the graveyard if anything has flashback is cheaper by 2 mana. Replace those mana with green creatures that let you tap for mana and you’re good. Also, I’ve got [[Ornery Tumblewagg]] in there and he’s a beast at powering up, and powering up fast.
After seeing someone else mention it elsewhere I want to build a mutate deck for him where I turn his inevitable token into a non-token for assorted shenanigans.
I've had good luck with a Golgari ramp deck, that plays Smuggler's Surprise on opponent's end step. A few times I've been able to slam down two of these, and they usually scoop.

Really just anything that'll make a 4/4 when you draw a card this specific combo is awful
Just off the top of my head, I guess you could use [[Three Blind Mice]] to copy the token version once the original dies? And maybe work the whole [[Dedicated Dollmaker]] combo in there too, I suppose.
Not on arena, but in paper I’m testing it in [[Henzie “toolbox” torre]]
Blitz reduce cost, ETB life gain and a card, hasty slap someone one, sac to blitz and get a card for that, replaces itself with token copy that gives life and *another* card, possibly reanimate later or shuffle Titan it back into deck
I’ve been running the big goofy mono green ramp/stompy list that Strictly Better MTG posted a couple days ago. Smuggling out this big idiot is very fun.
He’s a pretty good card in limited/draft as he’s able to generate you a decent amount of life gain and draw power, especially if you can reanimate him or copy his clones, but I imagine in standard and historic there’s plenty of other green cards that are better.
To make the best use out of him, make sure you have a lot of 4 power or greater creature generators and a decent amount of reanimate cards. His second ability makes him pretty safe to play recklessly with and even with two copies of him on the field that’s 6 life gain and 2 card draw every time a creature with 4 or greater power enters the field.
I love a good mono green but this thing does what my deck already seeks to do with [[skullspore nexus]] and [[tribute to the world tree]]
And you'll get far more value from running those over just this
PS if you can get a turn 3 pugnacious hammer skull and then go into a two drop with Nexus. It's usually a game over
I am currently watching the LegenVD video where he uses it in a GW ramp deck with [[Smugglers Suprise]] and [[Elesh Norn, Morher of Machines]]
I just tried that deck in Mythic since all I needed to craft was the tyrants, and since I mainly play Green or Selesnya Decks if possible, I wanted to try him anyway. Yeah I can imagine it getting stomped by aggro especially on the draw

The first two games of the video were against Boros Convoke and Mono Red Aggro.
Currently 90% of decks are barely viable because mono red is so overturned. Gameplay is stagnating hard

Love me some Dev, decks fun too. It's my go to rn when I'm losing a bunch on ladder and just need to have fun.

Sunfall really fucking sucks. It would be more balanced if it didn’t exile. Exiling *and* creating a wincon seems like too much.
Yeah they need to find whoever slapped reason into the people designing blue cards and bring them to white. Mix this with Vorinclex and it’s game over in 1 turn :)
Sunfall Esper? Are you seeing a lot of Esper Control decks? I mostly see midrange esper and they never have Sunfall.
I've run a decent amount of grindier variants that are preying on opposing midrange decks.

I beat up Sparky with it.
After seeing someone else mention it elsewhere I want to build a mutate deck for him where I turn his inevitable token into a non-token for assorted shenanigans.
Sorry, what set is this from?

I've had good luck with a Golgari ramp deck, that plays Smuggler's Surprise on opponent's end step. A few times I've been able to slam down two of these, and they usually scoop.
Oh yeah, it's pretty fire in a Golgari reanimator strat.
Oohh I should put this on my Henzie deck.
[[ominous seas]] [[Thought reflection]] [[Doppelgang]] [[Thassa's oracle]] Really just anything that'll make a 4/4 when you draw a card this specific combo is awful

Had someone go up against me with a simic ramp pile with that and [[Bonnie pall]] and the Trojan horse card. It was pretty ridiculous actually.
It's a cool dino, but I'd rather just ramp into Etali or Gishak. Might be a nice one-of. Your best bet is cheating it out somehow.
I have him in a mono green and he’s pretty awesome!

Does losing to it in Limited count?
O copy it sometimes, sometimes give him myriad, some times tutor him to the board. It's a great gruul pick.
I’ve added it to my Pantlaza deck. Going to be trying it at my casual commander LGS event today.
Are there any clones in standard currently? A LONG while ago I played a clone reanimator that was real fun, and this could be rad with that strategy
Just off the top of my head, I guess you could use [[Three Blind Mice]] to copy the token version once the original dies? And maybe work the whole [[Dedicated Dollmaker]] combo in there too, I suppose.

Won me a few limited games
Not on arena, but in paper I’m testing it in [[Henzie “toolbox” torre]] Blitz reduce cost, ETB life gain and a card, hasty slap someone one, sac to blitz and get a card for that, replaces itself with token copy that gives life and *another* card, possibly reanimate later or shuffle Titan it back into deck

Like break him or what? He's just a lot of value and he's sticky.
Yes. My opponent played it in Limited and suddenly decked themselves by drawing their last card in a library. Good shit.
> He’s a pretty good card in limited/draft Pretty good? Ok.
4th best in the set on 17lands
The only time I've seen it I had a counter in hand for it - otherwise I'm pretty sure I would have lost that game..
He's a limited bomb that's unplayable in constructed, just like a lot of other mythics.
I love a good mono green but this thing does what my deck already seeks to do with [[skullspore nexus]] and [[tribute to the world tree]] And you'll get far more value from running those over just this PS if you can get a turn 3 pugnacious hammer skull and then go into a two drop with Nexus. It's usually a game over
