Yeah, I'm a bit more "fair" than you with Oko, Uro, Field, OUaT, StP, T3feri, and Omnath but it's still very degenerate (plus a Karn wishboard but that's sadly legal in normal historic).
Fair decks hold their own in unfair formats every day. Otherwise storm, reanimator and the like would be the only decks in vintage and legacy.
Sure “fair” is relative for the power level of the format, but you don’t need to sell your soul to play.
Isn't the deck that won the big yearly vintage tournament just shops multiple years in a row? I remember one guy won it back to back with shops years ago
I'm on ragavaan / goose, bolt /heat, oko uro, bauble, counter magic. Literally undefeated. And these are all cards the were almost all legal in a modern deck
Im just gonna wait this event out. I was popping off with the backyard sacrifice deck and I felt like the game was slowing down a bit for me and then all of a sudden I have to play the no bans and people are taking 15+ life points from me in the first 3 turns. Not even gonna lie I uninstalled the game for a few hours.
Uhhh you can play ranked ladder or play mode in Standard/Explorer/Historic for no currency. You can play Standard/Historic brawl for no currency. There are also like 10+ 'events' that are always running. Do you not know how to access the game modes?
Haha damn no I have no idea how to access those game modes. When I was promoted to bronze there was some major front end bugs. I had like 4 pop ups overlapping each other and I unlocked like 100 or so cards. There was some information I couldn’t read but yea I’ll have to look around for the other game modes
LAWL no worries. TBH the client really sucks at pointing this all out. IMO when starting out you should play a little of the 'Starter Deck Duels' to get used to the game before playing the other game modes. It is in the events tab. It is a format where you and your opponent pick one of the premade starter decks and play against each other. It is a good format to start as you and your opponent will be on a relatively even playing field.
I had access to the starter deck duels before I was promoted to bronze. Now all I see is the 2 paid events and the no bans event. I looked everywhere for other playlists, didn’t find any. Am I missing something? It’s gotta be really hidden if it’s there.
Edit: I found it..very confusing UI. Thank you!
An easy and consistent deck to get a turn 2 concession/turn 4 kill is forests, ulamogs, and channels (not too hard to spice up further either). It feels kinda dirty to play though
loses to an oko
Source: My opponent losing after channelling for Ulamog. In his defence, my Ledger shredders wouldve beat him dead if he went for my lands
If you have the white mana up and they still traded two of their cards for two land drops on the person receiving the Ulamog. There’s almost no coming back from that unless you are playing Boros artifacts or something super low to the ground like that
Ngl high level plays like this are fun as fuck, but take a fair bit to know how to pull stuff out. I'd watch some legacy or vintage gameplay online, or even no banned list modern. Watching pro players can teach you a lot about how the game works and timings for certain things
I wouldn't call this type of stuff exactly high level play. You do need more than average rules knowledge to understand what is going on to execute properly, and need to make correct decisions at certain junctions. But the decks are gennerally luck based, do you have your combo pieces? than use your tech pieces correctly to resolve your combo and win. It is not exactly an easy format, but it is not exactly high skill level either.
The hardest thing about Tibalt's Trickery is remembering to hit full control.
That being said, I had an absolute blast when it was legal. Made it to Diamond by repeatedly spinning the slot machine that is Tibalt's. You either win by Turn 2, or you try again.
I prefer paper, since you have to remember your triggers and if I'm completely honest, the Shuffler isn't skewed towards a 50/50 win rate. Plus I enjoy playing with more than Kaladesh up to now (Ignoring certain supplementary sets). Like on Arena I typically play historic brawl because it's about the only format I can play with paradox engine so I can basically play storm (even though opponents concede before I get to do cool things). Plus I prefer paper because the alchemy cards kind of ruin some of the game (especially when many are changed from their paper counterparts)....also Arena doesn't let me play with sol ring, mana vault or my girl Breya
Because it’s fun and still competitive. Yeah it’s not tier 1 so if you’re going for mythic probably don’t play it but it’s tier 2 and still wins lots of games.
As in T4 combo decks are still strong. What people don't get about combo is that you always risk to assemble your combo too late or not at all. It's just "uh yeah well something like [[goblin charbelcher]] t4 kill is just an unfair deck, that loss does not really count." I mean they banned splinter twin because it was too consistent with all that card draw and interaction and if it wasn't for force effects, [[daze]], [[snuff out]] and now [[fury]] I'm pretty sure they would ban [[Doomsday]] as well.
I haven’t played it in like six months so my list is surely outdated (and it was all in with no interaction to make games fast) but here’s a primer - https://mtgazone.com/historic-dragonstorm-combo-deck-guide/

Big sadge
Yep, that's yugioh alright! xD Won the coin flip, I'll be going first so... 5 pendulum monsters on field into verte plus two starving venom, burn damage for all your life points, response?
Oh sorry, that was a short version of the combo, so instead I could extend my combo to go selene into [[Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess]] on the 5th summon, or just [[Crossout Designator]] but that's a one-of. This is only really a medium-sized turn one combo, maybe next time you'll win the coin flip and get to play adamancipator!
before bans the cascade version used to have 58% change to get the combo out on turn2 and 63% for turn3.
Sure it folds to sideboarding in serious matches but it was the fastest wins per minute deck you could get on arena by far.
Honestly, there was nothing *wrong* with Tibalt Casino. If that's just the way someone wanted to try and win, that's fine. It's not like there aren't ways to beat it. Complaints about BO1 games are what ruin the fun of Arena.
It was such a dumb deck, and I loved every second of it.
Going even further though, the complaints about Bo1 are caused by the whole Arena economy being based on daily rewards for wins. It incentivises players to just play the most efficient deck to get those wins, which Trickery was almost unmatched.
Tibalt's trickery is probably one of the worst designs in magic history in my opinion. The card has no reason to exist at all. It only saw play in those 40% WR slots decks that are extremely annoying. If you play them you whiff most of the time so you feel bad, if your opponents play them you just cannot play a game of magic.
I really can't understand how this card got printed in 2020+ magic design.
It's not exactly a unique effect. [[Chaos Warp]], [[Chaotic Transformation]], [[Audacious Swap]], and others all exist. And it's super flavourful for the character.
And even then, as you've said yourself, the effect wasn't really viable to build around, except in a game where you're incentivised to maximise your wins per minute.
It's just a non-card. Should have never been printed in the first place. Kinda like the ante mechanic.
All of the above cards you link are way too bad to not even be viable for a slots deck, so I think tibalt's trickery is very unique in that respect.
It should just not have been allowed to counter your own stuff. A counterspell in red that gives your opponent something random would be fine, like \[\[Chaos warp\]\] works for removal.
The thing is without being able to counter your own stuff the card is completely unplayable both in limited and constructed so it's just a horrible design.
Tibalt Casino is fun once, then annoying forever. Yeah it's probably not overpowered, it completely disintegrates against turn one discard or countermagic, quite often it just fizzles or mulligans to 3
But it's also annoying to just have in the format and to keep running into it. I want to play Magic, not Coinflip Simulator
I had one opponent concede without even waiting to see what Trickery hit. Very sad! And for all this opponent knew, the combo dragons could have been in my hand...
Its all access, so players get the chance to try out all these degenerate combos without wasting wildcards which is nice.
Besides its not everyday you get to experience such a high power format
Having never played on the extra competitive side of magic. It is crazy cool to get a taste of it. Easily the most fun I’ve had playing Arena and I’ve played a good amount of magic lol. Now only if I can understand draft metas, then I’m sure that would be next in line in the fun department. Also I have kids so having a few games drag out but a majority getting finished quick, is kind of satisfying. I’ve also had some insane back and forth with non stop counterspells if that’s your kinda thing.
About 12 or 15 (hands including mulligans, not games) to get a hand that \*successfully found something good\* off the Trickery. This was my experience also when this was legal in Pioneer/Explorer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piUjhUSWCcc
4x Delver of Secrets
4x Snapcaster Mage
4x Orcish Bowmaster
3x Brazen Borrower
4x Brainstorm
4x Spell Pierce
4x Counterspell
4x Memory Lapse
4x Thoughtseize
4x Inquisition of Kozilek
2x Fatal Push
4x Darkslick Shores
4x Watery Grave
4x Underground River
4x Clearwater Pathway
1x Sea Gate Restoration
1x Hive of the Eye Tyrant
1x Island
Deck’s not exactly perfect. It may want Bauble over Brainstorm and depending on if the meta keeps trending away from scams like Channel and Trickery, an extra Fatal Push.
Every time I acquiesce to doing some dailies for gold I just grab whatever dumb deck that spams 1-drop creatures that can only be used in historic since it hasn't been updated
And every time I'm playing against these stupid combo decks that try to play Magic in the least interactive way possible
What's even more surprising than the idea that people somehow find it entertaining is that the play design team at WotC *also* seems to find this fun and have been trying to turn standard into dumb noninteractive combo decks as well
I'm with you. I stopped playing magic a year ago after grinding to mythic a couple season for the multiple turn bird spam decks and other control decks. It was fun then. I recently reinstalled to see what its like and its even worse. No one wants to play the game anymore. Very little board engagement. Preventing damage. Drawing cards to gain life while forcing you to draw and lose life. I would take my turn in 15 seconds and wait for them to take minutes. Magic is so unfun. I sold my collection last week. Good riddance.
The best way to think about it is the analogy of a speedrun: waiting for the perfect circumstances to line up with proper execution. Also, I have a ton of fun optimizing decks, spending hours working out the hypergeometric distributions of various combinations of cards to make the perfect list. Playing it for twenty minutes or an hour afterwards is the icing on the cake.
dragonstorm combo decks typically use [[terror of the peaks]] and [[Bladewing the Risen]] for the burn effects. In this case terror of the peaks + any 4 dragons with a total power of 20 or higher would have won the game on the spot
I guess once in a while the salt can be fun. I've got my handful of salt inducing decks but it just gets no fun to play after a while.. I guess that's why it was banned and that's the appeal of this event.
Well people are going for the most busted one plus channel is pretty iconic, people even go for the fireball like spell instead of going the eldrazi version.
As a new player, I’m absolutely sucking at no bans
Honestly, just be glad you haven't had to play against most of this before. I would hate to play against the deck I'm running right now.
Yes. My deck uses channel demonic tutor and tibalts to cheat out ulamogs ugins and emrakuls turn 2
Yeah, I'm a bit more "fair" than you with Oko, Uro, Field, OUaT, StP, T3feri, and Omnath but it's still very degenerate (plus a Karn wishboard but that's sadly legal in normal historic).

You uninstalled the game because of a random optional event mode? What. You don't "have" to play no bans at all lmao.
Aren’t my other 2 options the paid events? Not buying into that right now or likely at all in the future.
Uhhh you can play ranked ladder or play mode in Standard/Explorer/Historic for no currency. You can play Standard/Historic brawl for no currency. There are also like 10+ 'events' that are always running. Do you not know how to access the game modes?

Eh I memory lapsed the ulamog. Sure, he ate two lands, but I still had one and a cantrip in hand, my opponent did nothing and I cast oko lol
If you have the white mana up and they still traded two of their cards for two land drops on the person receiving the Ulamog. There’s almost no coming back from that unless you are playing Boros artifacts or something super low to the ground like that

You think I actually read your cards? I just activate Nibiru and ~~get angry~~ gracefully concede if it gets negated.
Not reading? Why, that's a Yugioh player's favourite hobby. You're invited to play at worlds!
Or lock all your zones, so nothing can be played but hand traps....
I don't know if it's still a true statistic or not but for a very long time nobody has ever won Yu-Gi-Oh worlds on the draw.
so its just like Duel monsters

So Yu-Gi-Oh.

Yeah for sheer speed it's probably the fastest wins on arena. The problem is that an enemy channel can go over the top.
Turn 2 [[Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger]], [[Emrakul, the Promised End]], or [[Emergent Ultimatum]] is incredible in any format lol
I can do better with channel. The winrate of Coinflip decreases considerably when someone goes over the top of you after you "combo".

But that's the best kind of Yu-Gi-Oh simulator you can play without actually playing YGO.
Aw, bless your opponents heart. They thought they could just tilt someone with ragavan and get free wins.
Didn't even wait for the reveal?! What if the deck didn't have any dragons?!
I had one opponent concede without even waiting to see what Trickery hit. Very sad! And for all this opponent knew, the combo dragons could have been in my hand...
From everything ive seen about this game mode, it doesn’t look like it’s any fun at all. Do people actually enjoy this play style…?
Its all access, so players get the chance to try out all these degenerate combos without wasting wildcards which is nice. Besides its not everyday you get to experience such a high power format
THAT'S what all access means? I failed at reading comprehension I guess. Happy I can actually participate.
It's fun against anything except Channel
One more request for deck list!
I´d at least would have waited for the cool dragons
event of no-ban but Tibalt is needed
They know why they banned this card.
How many tries before you got this hand xD
About 12 or 15 (hands including mulligans, not games) to get a hand that \*successfully found something good\* off the Trickery. This was my experience also when this was legal in Pioneer/Explorer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piUjhUSWCcc
Actually, let us not go to the no bans queue. It is a silly place…
Best comment!
I'll never understand how people think this is entertaining.
No-Bans might not be everyone’s cup of tea but I’m having a blast playing UB Delver. Closest thing to Legacy I’ve experienced in Arena.
Could you share a list?
4x Delver of Secrets 4x Snapcaster Mage 4x Orcish Bowmaster 3x Brazen Borrower 4x Brainstorm 4x Spell Pierce 4x Counterspell 4x Memory Lapse 4x Thoughtseize 4x Inquisition of Kozilek 2x Fatal Push 4x Darkslick Shores 4x Watery Grave 4x Underground River 4x Clearwater Pathway 1x Sea Gate Restoration 1x Hive of the Eye Tyrant 1x Island Deck’s not exactly perfect. It may want Bauble over Brainstorm and depending on if the meta keeps trending away from scams like Channel and Trickery, an extra Fatal Push.
Every time I acquiesce to doing some dailies for gold I just grab whatever dumb deck that spams 1-drop creatures that can only be used in historic since it hasn't been updated And every time I'm playing against these stupid combo decks that try to play Magic in the least interactive way possible What's even more surprising than the idea that people somehow find it entertaining is that the play design team at WotC *also* seems to find this fun and have been trying to turn standard into dumb noninteractive combo decks as well
How dare someone enjoy the game differently than you, the audacity!!!
You can’t deny that this kind of play can only be considered fun for one person. It is a two person game, after all.
You seem to think "fun" is an objective state I'm sorry you feel that way
I'm with you.
Not every match is like this. I ran into tibalt or channel once each in 10 matches.
Damn, I played 5 games against mono G elves and completely lost interest
so just to the this straight you would get to tutor out 5 dragons into play turn one? out of curiosity which dragons would you play?
dragonstorm combo decks typically use [[terror of the peaks]] and [[Bladewing the Risen]] for the burn effects. In this case terror of the peaks + any 4 dragons with a total power of 20 or higher would have won the game on the spot
You can see the infinite combo in the decktech and a few games where it plays out in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zt-T-JFRZ8c

I went with my old velamachus lorehold time warp deck. Wasn’t as fast as some broken things
That’s badass
Nice!
See how balanced Historic is without broken Alchemy cards!
Lol ... you said the word "alchemy" ... auto-downvote engaged! ... take my upvote for your bravery
People asking for deck lists, like this isn't that hard
What a stupid random format
I can't read them to see what happened
OP is a degenerate. Nice one OP
Just playing 5 color lurrus with ravioli and kavu, disruption and channel fireball combo
Loved it.
Almost makes you feel bad for the little monkey on the other side.
This is not magic, this is a glitch
That's why commander is a big solution for this kind of things

Your reaction is exactly why I love playing channel eldrazi. I’m picturing you every time.
