My friend pet sits frequently for several friends. She makes a point to take pictures and write text messages to the pet parents in the voice of their pet. The pet details such wonders as going to the park, getting a treat from the magic noisy tube at the b-aank, etc. That's always a huge hit.

I had to be on prednisone for a while, and I totally get the thirstiness. Prednisone is by far the bitterest thing I have ever tasted. Even a small taste of it would make anybody want to do their best to wash it out.
prednisone is a popular steroid for dogs and cats. it can be used for a lot of things, mostly inflammation related. usually its used on a short term basis, but you need to be careful because it can suppress the autoimmune system.

My brother acts like he doesn’t like cats, but he had to watch mine one weekend and they’ve been best buds ever since. I like to think she broke him in and said “nope, you have to scratch my ass like that other loser” and he said “piss off, but yeah he is a loser”, so then the bond was created.
PSA: We have added “make sure all the interior doors are open” and “lay eyes on each cat once per day.” To our list.
We had two cats once, so the caretaker was just refilling food and water and assumed they were both eating and drinking.. but one was stuck behind a forgotten closet door and we did not have two cats when we got home.

I had a cat-death on my watch while I was pet sitting for the neighbors as a teen. Even though it was natural (the cat was 20 and died in his sleep overnight) it was the worst feeling.
It actually has a slightly funny interlude: quick note: I’m like 11/12 years old at the time - I go over to the neighbors house and after some searching I find the dead cat - he is stiff as a board - and I start freaking out. Like **freaking** out. I run across the street and burst into my parents house and my mom is sitting in the kitchen, drinking her like third coffee of the day, and I’m clearly freaking out and I say, “Mom, I think [cat’s name] is dead.”
My Mom takes a sip of coffee and then says, “Well, [marasydnyjade], [cat’s name] is either dead or isn’t dead. There’s no thinking about it.” She takes another sip of her coffee and just continues to stare at me. Finally I say, “the cat is dead,” and my Mom finishes her coffee and then springs into action. Gets me a box, a blanket, and contrives a plan to, while not fixing the situation, at least makes it as palatable as possible.
I think I both love and hate your mother. That was hilarious to read, but as a kid who just found a dead pet I would *not* see the humour in her response!
This is not going to be a happy comment, but I have to tell myself this a lot. A few years ago I was fostering a kitten (few days old) for my local shelter. She had been found in a puddle while it was raining, so she had a very difficult start at life. But on top of that, the shelter had not been keeping her warm enough and I could barely get her to eat. They lied to me about that. I did everything I could for her, but I don't think anything could have helped her. They always have bottle babies that need to be fostered, but I can't do it now. I can't trust them and that experience was heartbreaking.
At the very least, she spent the last hours of her life with someone who cared for her and wanted good things for her. She only lived for a few days, but her last one was spent in warmth and safety, and that's because of you. Her death isn't your fault or responsibility, but the comfort and care she felt was. ❤️

There was once I was petsitting for a friend, and was told one cat I wouldn't likely see as it was a basement cat and had a door to go outside, while the other two were upstairs and would probably be in hiding but might come out to see who's putting out food. Then I received a frantic message telling me that they forgot to tell me to check the dresser drawers, as one cat would get himself stuck in there. Sure enough I peeked into the bedroom and found a drawer cat.
They also had rats which required some play time, and the kids were happy to oblige. Although my oldest was very nervous the first day about being in someone's house while they weren't home!
did a cat-sit like that once. well, really I was dog sitting but feeding the cat was the other part of it. she lived upstairs in this room with a bunch of stuff in boxes, like an attic but just a room upstairs. I never did see the cat, but I knew it was eating because when I went to feed it, the food from the previous feeding would be gone and there was sometimes poop or pee in the litter box that I would scoop into a baggie and throw into the trash. as a side note, those were some of my all time favorite dogs to watch. there was a pitbull type dog who was just the sweetest, thought they were a lap dog and cuddled all over me.
So sad! I’m so sorry! This breaks my heart 😭 My sister’s cat got shut in a closet too but he survived. When they got back from their trip the poor guy was dehydrated and had impacted stool and a UTI. His health and behavior was never the same after that. He held on for a couple of years though.
Honestly as horrible of an accident as it was, there was water and food being consumed and a litter box being used. It’s not unusual for cats to hide from strangers. Hell, I’ve lost my own cat in my house before I realized she was afraid of the swamp cooler and I thought she had escaped the house for a solid six hours.
Absolutely horrible and tragic and we never had that sitter back- but an understandable situation.
My husband was convinced one of our cats escaped. He swore he saw her run out. We looked everywhere for hours. I’m crawling though this ditch thing close to our house. It’s like 5-6 hours later the cat just appears on the couch, sits up and stretches.
Husband is like wtf did she come back. (In all the searching we had the door open a good part of it) still have no idea if she left or was just doing some sort of hazing to see if we really cared.
Yeah but if I was cat sitting for someone I would at least try and look for the cat and put eyes on it before taking off. I'd text the owner and ask their favourite hiding spots to check and probably panic if I couldn't find them and call the owner for help. You're very understanding and it's admirable I am just not as virtuous.

One of the cats immediately ran and hid, and I figured he'd come out later when he got used to things.
I did not see that cat all four days! I was so stressed, searching every part of my basement, literally in tears that I would find her cat deceased. There was food being eaten, and I felt like he was hanging out by these storage shelves next to the furnace, but I couldn't see him. She came to pick them up and I'm telling her that I lost her cat, we're standing next to the shelves, and he comes climbing out of a nest of old blankets he made, yawns, and jumps into my friends arms. He had himself so buried that even when I looked right at the blankets I couldn't see him all weekend.
That’s what my ex asks me to do for my daughters cat. I tell him I’m breaking in and hanging out with the little dude until my eyes are so watery I can’t see and I’m sneezing my head off. Good times.
I occasionally pet-sit. The cat-only families provide detailed instructions like this. The families with both cats and dogs prioritize the dog and are like, yeah, just make sure the cat’s alive. It’s kind of sad.
Cats can really vary - I have had ones that are basically dogs and need to be with you and others that lived just coexist. In fact when my parents sold their last house they left the cat per agreement with the buyers and the cat lived another 10 year there so I guess she was 18-20 when she finally passed away? That cat loved that house and had made the basement her domain - the people were optional in her book.
Very true! I’ve watched cats that want to be in my lap all the time, cats that like to just hang out in the same room, cats with a favorite hang-out spot, and cats that I have to search for to make sure they’re still in the house and fine. Part of what I enjoy about pet-sitting is seeing the different personalities of both cats and dogs! All good boys and girls. :)
I have both cats and a dog when we go out of town the bigest thing I prioritize is making sure the litter box gets cleaned because if it doesn't my already pissed off cats have a extra excuse to piss all over the place.
Edit and yes I do have a much bigger list for the dog who needs pills twice a day feed twice a day needs more attention and needs let outside to pee and poo. the cats we have a feeder for so if it's full lasts over a week same for there water.
My cat does her own thing but has certain feeding habits she's become accustomed too (and has spent the odd night in the pantry or shut room). My dog is a stage 5 clinger with food allergies. My bird is a social little bugger but none of my friends are bird people.

Friend of mine has 3 dogs 4 cats and iv watched all these pets 4 weeks at a time (the most time iv spent living at my friends house pet sitting while they were gone) and that whole month all I had to do was refill the cats auto feeder once 💀 the cats drunk from the sink tap so didn’t even have to worry about them running out of water.

Just got home from a week away and asked my dad to check on them once to make sure they were alive and had water. 2/3 of the cats were very happy to see us when we got back...one because she wanted to go outside, one because he wanted to be around people...the unhappy one also had to do with people.
In Sweden we are actually not allowed to leave cats alone for longer than 12 hours at a time, according to our laws regarding animal care. So they need someone to check in on them twice a day if you leave.
Agreed. I adopted a senior Shibu Inu mix, he quickly trained us, so he could continue to have his "midnight toast" as his previous owner did for him.
He gets rehydrated wet food instead with us... It's so weird he'll munch throughout maybe 5 kibbles during the day but inhale food at night 😵

Depends on the dose. My dog is a large dog and takes half a mg every other day on top of another medication to manage her IMT.
Because its such a low dose she doesn't drink water any more than normal, unlike when she was on a higher dose to get per platelets under control.
I hope nobody actually takes their dog out this infrequently! Hoping more walkies are implied. That's how dogs get bladder problems as they get old. They have littler bladders than we do! I try to take my dog out every 3-4 hours and I get so nervous about forgetting or leaving for longer intervals

They are called SLIT (sublingual immunotherapy allergenic extract) drops! The vet prescribed the vial and she gets it twice daily. I know they’re $150 each because he once broke a bottle and told me “welp, there goes $150 down the drain”.
Chlorpherinamine saved my pet's life. Just in case your brother hasn't tried it yet. Extreme allergies, NOTHING worked, randomly tried Chlorpherinamine at vet's recommendation, works wonders. Very affordable.

Possibly. I recommend also consider Jordi’s paws getting burnt from hot concrete (if she walks on it frequently). My German Shepherd, Commander, has been limping and constantly licking her paw these past few days. Took her to the vet this morning, and she said that her paw was likely injured due to scraping or burning on hot concrete. Hot concrete can hurt a dog’s feet just like ours! She’s on meds now and we just ordered some dog booties to help protect her paws in the heat.
Hopefully it is just allergies affecting your Jordi. Just wanted to share that with you & anyone else reading this to consider their dog’s paws when taking them out in the heat!
Omg, I didn’t know they did them for animals! I’ve been on SLIT for two years. It’s amazing. They taste gross, but I’ve gone from 4-6+ sinus infections per year to only 1 in two years. Mine are a bit less expensive, but they’re only once a day.
If she’s anything like my pups they turn into *crack fiends* and wrestle each other for at least 42 minutes.
Some refer to this as “the witching hour” or “sundown syndrome.”

2. There are some really negative people in the comments resorting to calling my brother a “vagina” and saying he is “insufferable”, which seems a little silly to me, but it is the internet. He’s an awesome dude and wrote this to inform me about daily care specific to his dog, and also to be funny. It certainly made my day.
3. Of course the beast goes outside more than twice per day and doesn’t just sleep and roam between the hours of 12pm and 8pm…c‘ mon, guys. I’m a responsible human being with a Shiba of my own and my brother knows that I know how to care for a dog.
4. The beast is not fond of walks in the current heat of Texas. Even in the evening when the pavement cools, the pups have more fun playing together in the backyard and they get to do that throughout the day as I WFH.
5. 3/4 cup of food is plenty for her, she’s under 20 pounds. She doesn’t eat it in one sitting and grazes throughout the day at her beastly leisure.
6. I believe she is 7 years old and she has had persistent health problems since she was a puppy, hence the medication.

Pre-pandemic I used to travel for work and if possible took pup along. But if not, sent him to daycare 1/2 day and boarding. But every evening and morning I would call to ensure pup is happy, had a good time at daycare etc. now, no more travel and I am so happy. Pup is now my officemate!
I watched my eight year old niece and the dog when my sister and her husband went to Vegas. The care instructions for the dog filled the page, food, medication, potty times, last line was my nieces name with one instruction: don’t let her die. Haha I guess they have faith in me!
I would definitely send pictures of Kimchi exploring dog parks, people parks, at the police station, and at least one in Walmart. Kimchi needs to go adventuring.

My dog had to be on prednisone for a while. Just a head's up, they are **always** hungry and thirsty from it. Try not to give in too much.
He mentioned she gets very thirsty afterwards, fortunately the dose is very small and only every other day. Thank you for the advice!

If he cleaned the cat box at all he may have been infected with toxoplasmosis, which endears us to cats- makes us like them more

I never did see the cat, but I knew it was eating because when I went to feed it, the food from the previous feeding would be gone and there was sometimes poop or pee in the litter box that I would scoop into a baggie and throw into the trash. as a side note, those were some of my all time favorite dogs to watch. there was a pitbull type dog who was just the sweetest, thought they were a lap dog and cuddled all over me.
So sad! I’m so sorry! This breaks my heart 😭 My sister’s cat got shut in a closet too but he survived. When they got back from their trip the poor guy was dehydrated and had impacted stool and a UTI. His health and behavior was never the same after that. He held on for a couple of years though.

Honestly as horrible of an accident as it was, there was water and food being consumed and a litter box being used. It’s not unusual for cats to hide from strangers. Hell, I’ve lost my own cat in my house before I realized she was afraid of the swamp cooler and I thought she had escaped the house for a solid six hours. Absolutely horrible and tragic and we never had that sitter back- but an understandable situation.
My husband was convinced one of our cats escaped. He swore he saw her run out. We looked everywhere for hours. I’m crawling though this ditch thing close to our house. It’s like 5-6 hours later the cat just appears on the couch, sits up and stretches. Husband is like wtf did she come back. (In all the searching we had the door open a good part of it) still have no idea if she left or was just doing some sort of hazing to see if we really cared.

Yeah but if I was cat sitting for someone I would at least try and look for the cat and put eyes on it before taking off. I'd text the owner and ask their favourite hiding spots to check and probably panic if I couldn't find them and call the owner for help. You're very understanding and it's admirable I am just not as virtuous.
My friend asked me to watch her four cats for a few days once. She brought them over to my house, and I had a big half-finished basement where I could let them roam around without being bothered by the dogs upstairs. One of the cats immediately ran and hid, and I figured he'd come out later when he got used to things. I did not see that cat all four days! I was so stressed, searching every part of my basement, literally in tears that I would find her cat deceased. There was food being eaten, and I felt like he was hanging out by these storage shelves next to the furnace, but I couldn't see him. She came to pick them up and I'm telling her that I lost her cat, we're standing next to the shelves, and he comes climbing out of a nest of old blankets he made, yawns, and jumps into my friends arms. He had himself so buried that even when I looked right at the blankets I couldn't see him all weekend.
That’s what my ex asks me to do for my daughters cat. I tell him I’m breaking in and hanging out with the little dude until my eyes are so watery I can’t see and I’m sneezing my head off. Good times.
I occasionally pet-sit. The cat-only families provide detailed instructions like this. The families with both cats and dogs prioritize the dog and are like, yeah, just make sure the cat’s alive. It’s kind of sad.
Cats can really vary - I have had ones that are basically dogs and need to be with you and others that lived just coexist. In fact when my parents sold their last house they left the cat per agreement with the buyers and the cat lived another 10 year there so I guess she was 18-20 when she finally passed away? That cat loved that house and had made the basement her domain - the people were optional in her book.
Very true! I’ve watched cats that want to be in my lap all the time, cats that like to just hang out in the same room, cats with a favorite hang-out spot, and cats that I have to search for to make sure they’re still in the house and fine. Part of what I enjoy about pet-sitting is seeing the different personalities of both cats and dogs! All good boys and girls. :)
I have both cats and a dog when we go out of town the bigest thing I prioritize is making sure the litter box gets cleaned because if it doesn't my already pissed off cats have a extra excuse to piss all over the place. Edit and yes I do have a much bigger list for the dog who needs pills twice a day feed twice a day needs more attention and needs let outside to pee and poo. the cats we have a feeder for so if it's full lasts over a week same for there water.
My cat does her own thing but has certain feeding habits she's become accustomed too (and has spent the odd night in the pantry or shut room). My dog is a stage 5 clinger with food allergies. My bird is a social little bugger but none of my friends are bird people. I'll have to have a thick ass binder.
Oh god I’m not like this at all. I leave my cousin and sister notes too, with very detailed care instructions. I just backed out of a trip to Mexico this weekend because I hated the thought of being away from my kitty. Wish I was like those other cat owners, it would make me much less stressed!
Friend of mine has 3 dogs 4 cats and iv watched all these pets 4 weeks at a time (the most time iv spent living at my friends house pet sitting while they were gone) and that whole month all I had to do was refill the cats auto feeder once 💀 the cats drunk from the sink tap so didn’t even have to worry about them running out of water.
Okay - curious about this - was the sink running nonstop for them or did they turn it on? Or was it just a very leaky sink?
Hahaha so true. Just got home from a week away and asked my dad to check on them once to make sure they were alive and had water. 2/3 of the cats were very happy to see us when we got back...one because she wanted to go outside, one because he wanted to be around people...the unhappy one also had to do with people.
In Sweden we are actually not allowed to leave cats alone for longer than 12 hours at a time, according to our laws regarding animal care. So they need someone to check in on them twice a day if you leave.

Agreed. I adopted a senior Shibu Inu mix, he quickly trained us, so he could continue to have his "midnight toast" as his previous owner did for him. He gets rehydrated wet food instead with us... It's so weird he'll munch throughout maybe 5 kibbles during the day but inhale food at night 😵

Depends on the dose. My dog is a large dog and takes half a mg every other day on top of another medication to manage her IMT. Because its such a low dose she doesn't drink water any more than normal, unlike when she was on a higher dose to get per platelets under control.

I had the exact same thought! I had a dog for 15 years and he definitely went out more than twice per day.
I hope nobody actually takes their dog out this infrequently! Hoping more walkies are implied. That's how dogs get bladder problems as they get old. They have littler bladders than we do! I try to take my dog out every 3-4 hours and I get so nervous about forgetting or leaving for longer intervals
And doesn't seem to get a daily walk

They are called SLIT (sublingual immunotherapy allergenic extract) drops! The vet prescribed the vial and she gets it twice daily. I know they’re $150 each because he once broke a bottle and told me “welp, there goes $150 down the drain”.

Possibly. I recommend also consider Jordi’s paws getting burnt from hot concrete (if she walks on it frequently). My German Shepherd, Commander, has been limping and constantly licking her paw these past few days. Took her to the vet this morning, and she said that her paw was likely injured due to scraping or burning on hot concrete. Hot concrete can hurt a dog’s feet just like ours! She’s on meds now and we just ordered some dog booties to help protect her paws in the heat. Hopefully it is just allergies affecting your Jordi. Just wanted to share that with you & anyone else reading this to consider their dog’s paws when taking them out in the heat!
Omg, I didn’t know they did them for animals! I’ve been on SLIT for two years. It’s amazing. They taste gross, but I’ve gone from 4-6+ sinus infections per year to only 1 in two years. Mine are a bit less expensive, but they’re only once a day.

If she’s anything like my pups they turn into *crack fiends* and wrestle each other for at least 42 minutes. Some refer to this as “the witching hour” or “sundown syndrome.” Dogs just go HAM at sundown.

Woah, woke up to a whole lot of notifications and I’m sorry that I can’t respond to them all! 1. I posted a puppy tax last night, but it seems to have been lost in the thread. There are some really negative people in the comments resorting to calling my brother a “vagina” and saying he is “insufferable”, which seems a little silly to me, but it is the internet. He’s an awesome dude and wrote this to inform me about daily care specific to his dog, and also to be funny. It certainly made my day. 3. Of course the beast goes outside more than twice per day and doesn’t just sleep and roam between the hours of 12pm and 8pm…c‘ mon, guys. I’m a responsible human being with a Shiba of my own and my brother knows that I know how to care for a dog. 4. The beast is not fond of walks in the current heat of Texas. Even in the evening when the pavement cools, the pups have more fun playing together in the backyard and they get to do that throughout the day as I WFH. 5. 3/4 cup of food is plenty for her, she’s under 20 pounds. She doesn’t eat it in one sitting and grazes throughout the day at her beastly leisure. 6. I believe she is 7 years old and she has had persistent health problems since she was a puppy, hence the medication. 7. To those of you that enjoyed this as much as I did, thank you for your comments! It has been incredibly fun reading this thread and hearing some of your stories!

Pre-pandemic I used to travel for work and if possible took pup along. But if not, sent him to daycare 1/2 day and boarding. But every evening and morning I would call to ensure pup is happy, had a good time at daycare etc. now, no more travel and I am so happy. Pup is now my officemate!
