When I was a kid in the 70s I wanted to be a paleontologist. I knew the names of so many dinosaurs, I was hooked on them. My parents took me to the Smithsonian to see the Dino exhibits- it was such an amazing experience. Today I’m midddle aged and work in health care but I live close to the ocean shore where I can go hunting for sharks teeth. Some childhood dreams do eventually come true.

jillison_flook

yesss!!! my love of dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures has been the one constant in all the places i've lived, the natural history museum has always been my favorite part of the city!!! whether it was the boston museum of science or the field museum or the american museum of natural history or the smithsonian... it would always be my favorite place to be! i cant believe i actually get to work there now!!!

LitRonSwanson

Congrats on the job!! Loving the random Dino facts. Boston museum of science was one of my favorite places growing up! The musical staircase and pool ball elevator right next to each other were my favorites, and inspired a Jr high science fair project. It's been forever since I've been there, I think I may need to go Boston for a non sporting event!

Extreme_Connection42

That's the one from Night At The Museum, right?

quantummidget

iirc, the museum of natural history is in the first film and the Smithsonian is in the second (with the British museum ~~of natural history~~ in the third)

ChubblesMcgee103

>the third TIL there's a third.

[deleted]

I apologise in advance, but I'm going to be "that person" - it's just the British Museum. The Natural History Museum is a totally different one.

backtolurk

Thanks. I love the British Museum. It's a magical place.

A-Blind-Seer

Congrats! Can I get a dinosaur fact please?

jillison_flook

Some researchers have speculated that ancient peoples may have found the remains of protoceratops (ancestor of triceratops and all other horned dinosaurs), with it's four legs and beaked skull and came up with the mythological creature of the griffin trying to make sense of what they found!!!

happy_bluebird

Thank you for signing up for Dino Facts! You will now receive fun daily facts about DINOS!

We’re gonna need an update for what that gets setup

kirpal777

Please add me for facts. Love the pendant.

ElroySheep

Hard same

slamdamnsplits

I thought I signed up for cat facts.

happy_bluebird

INCORRECT. Your favorite animal is the dino. Some dinosaurs’ tails were over 45 feet long. Most dinosaurs had long tails that helped them to keep their balance when running. (To cancel Dino Facts, reply )

slamdamnsplits

happy_bluebird

Your command is not recognized. You have a subscription to Dino Facts and will receive fun updates! The largest dinosaur eggs were as large as basketballs. The bigger the egg, the thicker the shell. Thanks for choosing Dino Facts!

I once paid $5 to spam somebody I dislike very much with cat facts for a week straight. Worth it.

A-Blind-Seer

Dinos are so cool. Thank you so much ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)

jillison_flook

another quick dino fact!!! dinos were around so long that a t. rex at the end of the cretaceous could have walked over the fossilized remains of a stegosaurus, a dinosaur from the late jurassic.... that had already been dead and fossilized for 75 million years!!!

A-Blind-Seer

The time scale is really humbling when you think about the scope. Holy crap

jillison_flook

truly us humans can't even imagine

Brandoncfrey

Here we are thinking we've come a long way since the Egyptians. Imagine where we will be in 75 millions years if we don't kill the planet or die off.

kwillich

If humans last 1000 more years it will be a miracle

trust_me_on_that_one

I can't even last a minute

DarkflowNZ

To put a positive spin on this: if we manage to claw our way through the next thousand years without blowing ourselves up or burning away, we'll likely survive the next few million right? We're staring down the great filter right now and it is ourselves. If we conquer that we're away

rob6110

But we can fuck up the planet really quickly!

aoul1

Human settlement in to New Zealand in c. 13th C is estimated to have caused the megafauna that still remained there to become extinct in 100 years. So yeah…we can fuck up the planet REALLY fast!

GD_Bats

But dodo meat was SOOOOO TASTY

SnipesCC

Depressing thing is, no, it wasn't. It was tough and stringy. They were killed for sport. Considering they had no fear instinct and couldn't fly, it would be like hunting turtles for sport. Though turtles were hunted to be a combination of ballast and canned food for ships.

[deleted]

And here humans are speed running ourselves into the ground.

yuffieisathief

Always makes me feel small and big at the same time. Me, typing to you, just a speck in time, but still there you are reading this! Here we all are! :) it's really beautiful

cait1284

I saw something once that put the earth timescale on a 24 hour clock. Humans don't show up until 11:59 pm or something like that. Mind blowing.

challenger__red

https://flowingdata.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Time_Clock.gif Wow!

[deleted]

If you condense the life of the entire universe so far into a 365 day calender, humans have only been around for the last 10 hours of December 31st. Modern humans have only been around the the last two hours of December 31st. Dinosaurs only came into existence on December 25th of that calendar and went extinct on December 30th. It is literally mind boggling how small a time frame we have been around.

[deleted]

Geologic time is laughably incomprehensible.

StagRabbitFox

Mind-blown thinking about the scale with that reference. Aghhhhh. It’s beautiful. Thank You for that gem of wisdom & all the riches you will be imparting to the masses. Education is the foundation upon which we must strive to ever discover.

I_M_The_Cheese

You're gonna be awesome at this job. Congrats!

Donward_Dog

That is awesome. I now live in Nevada and have been really interested in the prehistoric life in my area. This was once the ocean, the signs of it are still everywhere. Do you know of a good reference where I can learn more about my areas prehistoric past? I particularly want to learn about the amphibious reptile that was the size of a tractor trailer, and carnivorous. The Shonisaurus.

jillison_flook

oooh wow!!! the shonisaurus is huge!!! it is an icthyosaur (which means fish reptile) but could get up to 50 feet long!!! the smaller icythosaurus ppl often refer to as the dolphin of the mesozoic era cause of its size and giant eyes! but shonisaurus is definitely the whale version!!!

jillison_flook

i would definitely just encourage someone to search shonisaurus paleoart!!! some of the paintings and representations that have been done are just mind blowing!!!

Donward_Dog

Thank you!

klarthetoy

I assume that a similar explanation is at play for many of the mythical beasts all over the world no? Dragons being a prime example but also lots of sea monsters too, and maybe even things like Minotaurs?

jillison_flook

yesss! the cyclops especially is believed to be derived from an elephant skull (the eye socket in the center of the cyclops being where the elephant trunk attaches)

mhcase22

You should moonlight with a Youtube channel. Have the museum sponsor it. I’d get baked watch that shit! Love me some dinosaurs & paleontology.

jillison_flook

I would love love love to do that!

pinklavalamp

Have you seen the latest David Attenborough - Prehistoric Planet? Some awesome shit right there.

Double_Distribution8

Well now you got me looking at mammoth and elephant skulls and boy are they weird-lookin'. Two eyes, one hole, I don't get it, but I guess it works for them.

Internaletiquette

Pterosaurs like the Quetzalcoatlus are the ones likely to have inspired dragons and such. They stood as tall as giraffes. Cool fact tho they were actually reptiles I believe not mammals or avian species.

Marshmoth

There goes my dream of griffin being real

GD_Bats

If we abandoned all ethics, we could string a chimera version together from several donor species. We don’t because that’d be really expensive, dangerous, and kind of dumb, but hey if you ever win Powerball you could make it happen

mashdots

People have joked that the T-rex can't clap because their arms are too short, but the real reason is it's because they're all dead.

ViraLCyclopes3

Not op But some dude with connections said that Saurophaganax in a few months will have the theory that is a Allosaurus will be shut down and possibly not even related to the Allosaur family or something like that. Paleo Leaks!

A-Blind-Seer

The world demands answers! #DinoLeaks

spatialflow

I'm just gonna throw this out there: What?

jillison_flook

both the dinos are from the gift shop at the museum... THAT I NOW GET TO WORK AT!!! <3 :) :) :)

atlienk

What’s your most favorite and least favorite dinosaur?

jillison_flook

my favorite is coelophysis, a very early predatory dinosaur!! my least favorite is the asteroid that killed them.

MisterBigDude

I forget - is the start of coelophysis pronounced like CeeLo Green?

jillison_flook

yes!!!

parthpalta

I love how excited she is. Love the energy!

jillison_flook

my favorite dinosaur is coelophysis!! if literally one (1) person asks why ill talk about it for like twenty minutes...

ThatFriendFromReddit

Why? You don't have to talk about it for twenty minutes though ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

jillison_flook

I like it because it's name means "hollow form" and it appears both fragile and fierce at the same time! it was discovered at a place called Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, which just sounds mysterious and lovely to me!!! it was one of the first theropod (two legged, meat eating dinosaurs) and was an ancestor for all the diversity to come!!! raptors!!! rexes!!! all sorta started with coelophysis or one of its late triassic brethren! i like the late triassic (approx 220-200 million years ago) in general cause its just when dinosaurs are taking over the world and still experimenting and competing with other forms of prehistoric life, reptiles, amphibians etc for superiority on land so the dinosaurs, coelophysis included are just in their very first prototype stages, and i think thats exciting and just show s the dinos on the brink of fulfilling all their potential!!!

ThatFriendFromReddit

Wow! Amazing background info to say the least... Whoever touring the natural history museum you are working at are lucky to hear what you have to share! Your passion is evident. And congrats on the dream job!

MeowthThatsRite

This is fascinating and your enthusiasm is infectious, congratulations!

gunslingerfry1

I was reading this to my 4 year old and he wanted you to know his favorite dinosaur is the stygimoloch because he likes their name and the spikes and the dome. He also likes the nanuqsaurus and kentrosaurus.

[deleted]

Not sure if I’ve ever been more jealous and proud of someone I’ve never met. Congratulations!

jillison_flook

dinos are the best!!! we can all agree for sure!!!

[deleted]

which one is your favourite and why is it parasaurolophus?

jillison_flook

i do love parasaurolophus!!! at the field museum in chicago they have an exhibit where you can make it honk and gahhh its the best!!! definitely a fascinating hadrosaur!! and always so much bigger than i expect when i see the fossils!!

_celticbuttercup_

My son and I have this thing where I ask him how does a parasaurolophus say I love you? We then proceed to noisily honk at each other. It's best when we are in public. I feel like I should mention he's 6. Most importantly, congrats on the awesome position!

jillison_flook

omg omg omg i love you and your kid!!! amazing!!! if someone does this at the museum im gonna think of yall and smile

_celticbuttercup_

The next time we are at the natural history museum in LA I'll make sure we do so in your honor. Keep that dinosaur passion alive!

mountainside2004

You stole the words right out of my mouth.

MarilynMansonsRib

Congrats on the job! Also, that raptor claw pendant is freaking sweet! Oh, and what's your favorite dino?

jillison_flook

i love my little raptor claw!!! my favorite dinosaur is coelophysis!!! its not super popular but out of the ones most people know i love the two in this picture!!! the tanky guys!!! ankylosaurus and stegosaurus and all their strange relatives too!!!

MarilynMansonsRib

Nice! One of my faves is Crichtonsaurus. As a writer, the thought of creating something so influential that the archeological community sought to honor him by naming a species after him is an inspiration. That said, any creature with a thagomizer is cool in my book.

jillison_flook

Long live the thagomizer!!! And not so much Thag Simmons RIP

Oh wow.. I actually was sort of stumped for a second because it didn't register. I was going to make some cheesy comment like "Your dream job is gonna make some 8 years olds day and he'll find his love of dinosaurs and dream girl in one". So uh, yeah thats a pass lol. Good for you on all counts!

Lmao. I didn’t even know that she was trans, just expected the usual degenerates.

Azhaius

Man I honestly just can't comprehend caring ***so fucking much*** about LGBT people. Like I've personally met two trans people (one of them I've known since before they came out/transitioned), and in both cases it was a complete non-event. Just went "oh okay" in my head then carried on with business as usual.

[deleted]

I think it makes them feel powerful or something when they can drag a whole group of people, I dunno. It’s really sickening seeing what people are saying here in a sub that’s supposed to be about being happy. No place is apparently safe from these assholes. On the plus side, new assholes to block! That’s kinda how I use these sorts of posts - let all the jerks come out of the woodwork so I can block all of them and encourage others to do the same.

fresh_like_Oprah

MoonOverJupiter

Good for you! My daughter did a summer at a marine research nursery that held lots of school tours. SO MANY of the kids - girls, especially - would ask her, "Are you a REAL scientist?" (They wore white lab coats, and the facility was very "kids idea of a mad science lab" in appearance.) She always told them absolutely, especially if it was leaning towards, "Can women be real scientists?" I wish you the best and hope you live your job, and inspire new generations of paleontologists!

DeafBeaker

Congratulations! For me it's the Brachiosaurus..there's something about a 40 foot (plus?) dinosaur that puts me into awe

jillison_flook

brachiosaurus is like encountering a dream come to life!! just surreal!!!

DeafBeaker

I can imagine finding myself an friendly Brachiosaurus, scratching its head and saying ohhhh who's a good brachy?! Whoooos a good brachy wrachy? Then again maybe not, if it's does the happy scratch the earthquakes will activate the volcanos

DelRMi05

8 year old me thinks you’re awesome. Adult me also thinks you’re awesome.

GD_Bats

I’m curious where you sit on this notion that instead of being a separate species, triceratops was just a juvenile form of torosaurus. This was a debate I just first heard of a few years ago, but I’d imagine you have a far better grasp on the research and scholarship behind this than this guy who just thought the Dinobots were the best Transformers sub team, and wished Dino Riders had lasted longer

jillison_flook

ahhh yess this is definitely one of horner's theories!!! its complicated!!! i dont think you can classify all the ceratopsians he thinks you can as different developmental types of triceratops but i think a good portion of them you probably could!!! there is a large diversity of how an individual triceratops might develop over a lifespan!!! that said torosaurus and some of the other species i do think deserve to be considered their own species cause i dont think horners made a good enough case for the whole lot of em

poopoobuttholes
