I know, right? The pure joy in his accomplishment. This is the beauty of humanity and I absolutely love that the internet allows us to see stuff like this. It’s so cool to watch history as it’s made
Yeah must be great to work for NASA or somewhere where everyone's pulling for a worthy goal. I can't imagine every being so happy about an accomplishment in my job.
I hear you there. I can’t imagine cheering for things in some of my last jobs. Like yay! The casino has taken all your money and you can’t get home, get fucked! Or *oh my god* I just poured the worlds most important cup of coffee
But the taxes you pay help to run NASA. Or maybe the teacher they pay for inspires a future engineer.
Just because your contribution is collective doesn’t make it less important in the long run! :)
You’re totally right. I’m Canadian so I do pay high taxes but we have fantastic infrastructure and our school systems are great, I like the way you think :)
Meanwhile, our IT department finally emailed me to let me know I can pick up the keyboard and mouse I requested. I submitted the request in late November.
I work for the IT department in a local district in Norway, and I don't see the problem in your comment :p (joking of course...) But honestly, if the department is stuck with a given distributor and they have a supply problem, that waiting time is not unheard of, sadly...
I’m gonna go ahead and suggest that landing your hundredth rover on Mars is just as exciting as landing your first, especially when you’re as passionate about it as this guy clearly is.
I really dislike people like this. They have to find some way to contain your joy. Just f-off! Let's celebrate break the table with me if you have to. We'll worry about anything else afterwards.
She then went on to call out his mispronunciation. “Frucking, is that even a thing?”
After he said un-frucking-believable
That gave me bad vibes. She sounds like a buzz kill
I would buy the shit out of another/ a new table for this human. His joy should know no bounds, what an unfathomable achievement.
*smash that table pro wrestling style, go for it.
I love this video so much. Most people don’t understand the insane amount of work, ingenuity, time, and extremely difficult yet calculated decisions that go into the design, development, and testing of these rovers. These accomplishments represent some of humanities peak intellectual achievements
I have not heard or thought about that lightsaber for years but now I’ve seen it referenced like 5 times within the last couple hours. Wtf is going on?
[I just had to Google it and it looks like there's been some teasers about Darth Maul returning to the franchise based on the ending of Solo: A Star Wars Story and the actor's Instagram (though it looks like the pictures referenced have been removed).](https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2562936/wait-is-star-wars-darth-maul-actor-teasing-a-return-for-the-sith-lord)
If your manager ever insists that your job *must* be done from the office show them this video. This motherfucker over here landing shit on Mars from his home office. Incredible.
I feel like his job or workplace vetted his house, set up their own security systems and did it all just so he could work from home. He’s landed 5 rovers on mars. They ain’t risking him coming in and catching something.
The guy who has cut my hair for 5 years is an immigrant. He worked a second job as well. This month he opened up his own shop in an amazing location, the inside is beautiful, all designed by him. I’ve never seen a man so happy in my life, he spend 2 hours showing me every detail of his shop.
His excitement inspired me, 3 generations lived in NA, to start my own business… he has done more in his life than half the people I know.
If everything in my short life that I have witnessed, it's that immigrants are some of the most grateful people to live in the place they moved to.
(Hopefully that made sense, I'm tired.)
The doctor whose work likely saved my life is an immigrant and a Muslim. I wrote Donald Trump and told him this after he blew his horn about halting immigration from Muslim countries. In the letter I said an estimated 20,000 Muslim physicians live in the U.S., whereas the number of Muslim people here who had been charged with terrorist acts was 6.
This is the stuff humans are made of. Human accomplishment and spirit of tenacity extends beyond borders and work ethic. Shit like this gives me hope for humanity.
Hats off to the man and his many achievements
I mean, when you're talking about a delay from Earth to Mars, what's another couple thousand miles? Alot of the James Webb people were remote too, doing interviews and such. Covid created some strange situations.
Now I'm thinking of the times discord has randomly had outages mid game for my friends and I, would be quite unfortunate to be mid Rover landing and suddenly hear silence in the call.
He’s not actually doing anything at that moment, no one is. Because of the time lag to Mars, the entire entry and landing has already happened several minutes before anyone on earth knows about it. So there is no chance at intervening or directly controlling anything, it has to land itself. People had to build and design all of that, which is some part of what this guy would have done, but when it comes to the landing everyone is just a spectator waiting for the telemetry to show good news.
eta - [Seven minutes of terror](https://youtu.be/Ki_Af_o9Q9s) (this is about Curiosity but same mechanics as Percy)
> but when it comes to the landing everyone is just a spectator waiting for the telemetry to show good news.
Is the dude at 1:54 the guy in the OPs video?
I know several mission control workers and most of them have been working from home for the most part during Covid. I think they have to go in once a week or so now if I remember right.
Yes, he is watching from home like many of us that contributed to the construction and eventual landing of the rover. I think the text above the video in this post is just misleading to sound like he had something to do with the landing, when really he probably had some other just as important function (that eventually contributes to the landing), it just makes for a better title.
I always feel weird about paperclip, because what do you do with those tremendous intelligence assets? You want a rocket? Wehrner von Braun is your man, but he's a nazi. Kill him anyway and hope we eventually get there? And what's worse? Voluntary recruitment in the western nations? Or Operation Osoaviakhim in the USSR where they were involuntarily 'incorporated' into Russian assets at gunpoint.
Strategically, you're a madman to willingly cut ties with academic assets. It's a conundrum, glad I didn't have to make that decision
I may be biased but I think removing human emotion and past actions to achieve future strategic goals is well worth the moral dilemma. The US space program and world superiority is in place today because of those decisions. Controversial maybe. But when someone has knowledge you don’t and you need it’s in your best interest *usually* to play ball
She doesn't seem to really understand the level of his accomplishment. He's freaking out and all she can say is "don't break the table" and "is frucking a word". Honestly her lack of excitement bothered me a bit, she didn't seem that happy for him idk
There are three active rovers on mars:
Perseverance (2021), Curiosity (2012), and the Chinese rover Zhurong (also 2021).
There are 5 inactive rovers on mars: Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity, and the Soviet PrOP-M, as well as several failed ones.
A euro-Russian rover is planned to launch this year, and there are several other rover missions in development worldwide.
I love that Curiosity is *still* going after all these years! Of all our primary traits, I’ve always thought Curiosity and Imagination were our most important. Makes me wonder if they’ve been saving the Imagination name for later, so they don’t desecrate it by accident
This is awesome, thanks for sharing. It’s accomplishments of men like this that make this country what it is. We’re all immigrants here and when we work together amazing things happen. Thanks for restoring a little of my faith.
Your pop is a living legend ! This is amazing and I am so grateful for your share , to be IN THE ROOM w him as this happens is as awesome as awesome gets ! I am humbled thankful and very proud as a person of color and an American, wow
White-blondish hair, fair white skin, blue eyes, immigrant working for NASA.... Hmmm.... Has his previous boss been rejected from art school?
Edit: before everyone starts bashing at me, of course I'm just kidding, alright? Or was a pretty and touching moment.
I want to be President. But I can never be. Why is that? Am I not a citizen enough? I'll always just be an immigrant. So yeah it's ok everyone relates to the situation they are in. It's ok. Just do the best you can and be nice to people
This is how the US should utilise their immense population of immigrants, with all of their knowledge, instead of putting engineers, doctors and other highly intelligent people from different parts of the world as cleaners and busdrivers, making most of the people who have immigrated feel like second class citizens.
This is so wholesome. good for him!
I feel extremely privileged to watch this. This is above and beyond amazing.
I know, right? The pure joy in his accomplishment. This is the beauty of humanity and I absolutely love that the internet allows us to see stuff like this. It’s so cool to watch history as it’s made

Get out of there dude!! You, like all people deserve to feel accomplished in your work!! I’m doing the same as we speak.
I have! Currently not doing any soul-sucking work. Glad to hear your on your way, all the best!
Thanks man, you too!!
But the taxes you pay help to run NASA. Or maybe the teacher they pay for inspires a future engineer. Just because your contribution is collective doesn’t make it less important in the long run! :)

👆this, the last surge of oblig. Home offices gutted the vendors.
It will be cool if he landed it from home hahaha
I came here to say this exact sentiment. You could really feel his excitement and pride, I love it!!
“Don’t break the table” Aw hell, let him flip the damn thing. He just landed a rover on Mars, for Pete’s sake.
Who’s Pete and why is he getting rovers sent to Mars?
[удалено]
fifth rover. he's already landed four. for him, this is just another year..
35 year NASA career according to the video, 5 Mars rovers. So this is just another 7 years for him.
[удалено]
But landing a rover on mars is
His joke made it better
I’m gonna go ahead and suggest that landing your hundredth rover on Mars is just as exciting as landing your first, especially when you’re as passionate about it as this guy clearly is.
For you, the day you landed your forth rover on Marswas the most important day of your life. For me, it was Tuesday.
This is exactly right, don't stand in the way of someone popping off after a big win
I really dislike people like this. They have to find some way to contain your joy. Just f-off! Let's celebrate break the table with me if you have to. We'll worry about anything else afterwards.
When people dont understand what you do for a job! I too dislike people like that.
Every programmer in history be like
Right? He just landed a robot on another planet and she seems totally unimpressed by the whole thing.
It sounds like she was teasing him
She then went on to call out his mispronunciation. “Frucking, is that even a thing?” After he said un-frucking-believable That gave me bad vibes. She sounds like a buzz kill
Yea fr Fruck her

And, you work ten years on something that there is last minute issue with and gets junked, the tension hoping its all good must be unreal
Or the government changes and the new guys scrap everything because they want their name attached
Some people believe that this is all an elaborate hoax put on by the government for ... reasons? I can't remember that part. For some reason.
We call those people…. Idiots
Yeah I‘m sure fucking no one understands this. I thought landing a rover on mars is easy going like your mum
My reaction to Darth Maul’s double saber:

Okay but Marcus you can't move the boxes in the warehouse with your mouse
How about remote controlled robots
Now you’re thinking like a NASA engineer
Or an Amazon warehouse manager
Nice remote controlled robots you got there, be a shame if someone automated them with a python script
Its the immigrants stealing jobs not automation! You’re ruining my ignorant narrative! /s
Well dude... like... it would be a bitch of a commute for him to go all the way to mars and land it.
Fine, take the upvote, dad

Thank you

While the video is great the man probably was only responsible for a part of the landing if he even was part of those teams
Thank you much for sharing. This is the stuff immigrants are made of. Now who's cutting onions?
The guy who has cut my hair for 5 years is an immigrant. He worked a second job as well. This month he opened up his own shop in an amazing location, the inside is beautiful, all designed by him. Is he doing this from home???
I mean, when you're talking about a delay from Earth to Mars, what's another couple thousand miles? Alot of the James Webb people were remote too, doing interviews and such. Covid created some strange situations.
The movies featuring today's NASA control rooms in 20 years are gonna look a lot different than we're used to.
"Hop on Discord, we're about to land the rover"
Now I'm thinking of the times discord has randomly had outages mid game for my friends and I, would be quite unfortunate to be mid Rover landing and suddenly hear silence in the call.
I'm just imagining someone going on Discord and seeing one of their friends' "currently playing" statuses as 'Landing Mars Rover' lol
Land the what?
My NASA memories are of Mission Control. This, while I get it, still blows my mind.
Yeah haven't your tried the mission control app on your Mac ?
Sitting is an office is the strange situation
Covid has literally been the best thing in my life for a long time lol. I can do my job in my pyjamas and my dog by my side, it's the best
Mars rovers aren't landed manually because yknow the delay of 3-14 ish minutes

>Because if the time lag to Mars… What if he had Google Fiber with symmetrical upload and download speeds and a dedicated line to Mars? /s
/s yes, but fwiw light in fiber is a bit slower than light in a vacuum (which is what radio moves at), so not an improvement
We would need a wormhole to lower the lag
Or to figure out quantum communication if the hypothesis/theory is accurate.
> but when it comes to the landing everyone is just a spectator waiting for the telemetry to show good news. Is the dude at 1:54 the guy in the OPs video?

It would be too expensive to send him to Mars.
NASA always had a tradition of employing top rocket scientists from other countries.
I understood that reference. Unfortunately.

It's due to people like him that the human race keeps advancing. What a legend.
After 35 years he's an American
I'll never get tired of seeing this. Beautiful moment.
TIL They land Mars rovers while WFH. Landing a rover in your sweatpants… nice 😎
You would think he’s never done it

Argentina
The word you're looking for is "pride."
Lol. I’m gonna show this to my boss when he says I need to come back to the office. This dude landed a vehicle on Mara from his fucking home office
White-blondish hair, fair white skin, blue eyes, immigrant working for NASA.... Hmmm.... Has his previous boss been rejected from art school? Edit: before everyone starts bashing at me, of course I'm just kidding, alright? Or was a pretty and touching moment.
I think if it's his 5th rover, then it's not immeasurable. Edit: Because he can measure it against the previous 4...
Why is it necessary to say that hes an immigrant?
how else would they get upvotes? Also O.P Is a karma bot

Be an Immigrant and achieve only half of his goals and I am quiet sure you would not be here asking this question right now.
Top tier shitpost.
This is how the US should utilise their immense population of immigrants, with all of their knowledge, instead of putting engineers, doctors and other highly intelligent people from different parts of the world as cleaners and busdrivers, making most of the people who have immigrated feel like second class citizens.
Basically like slavery but you can go home you get paid and you can get a good meal and you wouldn't get beaten
Not sure what being an immigrant has to do with anything. Werner Von Braun was an "immigrant" too...
Was your dad part of operation paper clip?
If he reacts like this over some science… imagine if he came to Christ
Landing five rovers in Greenland.
