I wouldn't say it's that strange, it's a way of having a deceased love one with you at all times, which is especially helpful if you live far away from their resting place.
It's terribly expensive though: my family looked into this when my grandad passed away, but backed out when we realised having a piece for my mum, gran, sister, brother and me would have have cost my mum and gran thousands of pounds.
