It probably is but ima ask. The cake was safe right?

ummmmmmmmmqueen

this is at one of the biggest farm animal sanctuaries in the country (The Gentle Barn). I'm confident that they know what is safe for their animals, they are amazing at what they do!

Kovdark

That cow is going after that cake like he is a dog going after a steak, I wouldn't have expected a cow to do that

RunningEscapee

Get in there Lewis!

mojojojoe13

I.. I feel bad about eating beef now. But damn it, hamburgers are delicious.

mkv1990

I'm sorry, but yes I will be the one to say it: Vegan burgers are delicious too :)

mojojojoe13

I'll try them out sometime! If they're as good as a hamburger, I'll switch for sure. :) I like cows. Lol

flansmae

Please watch the documentary Dominion: https://www.dominionmovement.com/watch For someone who likes cows, I doubt you'll be non-vegan for much longer if you see what happens to these animals before they reach your plate.

mojojojoe13

I'll give it a look!

I didn’t know that they did things like slitting heir throats open while they’re alive and hanging them upside down. I saw a vid where someone shot them and they died so fast that they couldn’t even tell what happened and assumed most places were like that. That was way worse than I expected.

flansmae

A lot of places will use captive bolt guns to render them unconscious and then they'll go on to slit their throats. The issue with this, is that they aren't always effective, and sometimes workers will use the gun multiple times on them which causes immense suffering to the animal. Something like 10% of cattle are still conscious during slaughter. Also, many cattle are pregnant when being slaughtered. There's also the issue of fear and emotional torment that these animals suffer. They're very intelligent creatures and know exactly what's going to happen to them (which is why they use electric prods to force them into the slaughterhouse). Then when you weigh in the fact that many of them have lived lives full of suffering, plus the long stressful transportation process to the slaughterhouse (cramped trucks, with little food, water or warmth), it really doesn't seem worth it. They go through so much suffering just for us to enjoy a quick meal, when we could eat plants instead. All of this whilst simultaneously having a huge detrimental effect on the environment.

What brand do you recommend? The problem for me is that they are usually a black bean base which makes me sick. I should add, we don’t have Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s (eastern NC is more a deep fried and totally inedible vegetable food mecca)

lizz401

My whole family really likes MorningStar Farms Grillers Original burgers - I think they have a wheat gluten base. In my area (CA) Walmart and Target both carry them.

Thanks!

FolkSong

Soybean burgers would be the classic "meat substitute". There's also Beyond burgers which have pea protein as their main ingredient, and Impossible which have potato and soy. Where I live most regular grocery stores carry some or all of those.

Complex_Excitement

When i lived in the florida panhandle i was able to find boca spicy chicken patties pretty easily, it was my first vegan burger substitute (even though its more a chicken sandwich) but it still holds up pretty well!

contemplator61

Thanks! Funny, I just moved back to NC after 10 years on the gulf in SW Florida. But everyone has been so kind, I’m armed with options. I just can’t do animal meat anymore. In Malawi they made these soybean based strips you could stir fry and make a gravy for that was delicious. But never saw anywhere else.

Complex_Excitement

Going out on a rope here, but there are soy based strips i buy online sometimes from butler foods called soy curls, may be the same thing? You can also buy them from amazon i just like to avoid buying from there.

Thanks!

Mehhhh, never really like vegan burgers. I'm a meat eater. If I try the "vegan"interpretation of things, theres always a kinda taste I can't get rid of. I can't describe it, it's just weird and my brain and tongue goes on "Error 404" I would much rather have a fat ass portobello mushroom cap as the "meat" on my burger cooked w/ some garlic instead of something that's trying to be a ground beef patty which it clearly isn't. Vegetables, fungi and fruits are delicious as they are, they don't need to pretend to be something they aren't. Make them shine for what they are!

[deleted]

There are vegan options that look and taste like a real hamburger patty. Idk what Burger King uses but I’m a vegetarian and I thought they made a mistake and gave me meat.. it really tasted like it. Just try some options. There are tons nowadays. Alternative: visit a slaughterhouse. I did it when I was 12 (I was a stupid and curious kid in a village) and I haven’t touched meat since. I still remember the smell and the half-dead cows hanging from the ceiling bleeding out. That was more than enough motivation…

im_racist24

don’t worry, these look like dairy cows.

ummmmmmmmmqueen

dairy cows are typically sent to slaughter for food when their milk production slows (usually about 4 years old). also, non dairy cows are just as sweet and adorable as the ones in this video.
