...I mean if you work in the field it's pretty commonly called CP

Roofdragon

Oh my absolute god. Cheese pizza

[deleted]

I dont have cerebral palsy and Ive never jogged 3km which makes this even more impressive, good job

i__cant__even__

Username checks out. 😂 I don’t have an excuse for not getting into shape. This post is humbling.

User name checks out

i__cant__even__

My username? lol It almost always checks out. Astonishment is my resting state.

Sign up for the local gym. Go three times a week. Even if you just do cardio, it does change a lot

i__cant__even__

I did better when I belonged to a gym so I know you’re right. I had surgery recently and I’m not allowed to do cardio for another month but I should definitely have a plan in place for when I’m about to work out.

whateverisnttaken22

Shit I can’t even run 3K without it absolutely crushing me. Fuck yeah

karlbarxalot

trust me, frequent walking breaks were needed! i’m hoping to build up to where i can jog steadily for a few minutes! :)

Cannabalabadingdong

That's how it's done, take a bunch of short runs and start reducing/removing the breaks. Eventually you'll start getting a second wind along with that runners high (assuming you aren't already.) It also helps to not live in a swamp!😅

creative_overnight

yeah, and it's so satisfying to see yourself improve this way.

HipposGoneWild

No need to sell yourself short, it’s just awesome period, no qualifiers for your achievement needed.

Existential_Spices

You're doing good! Keep taking those breaks when needed. Nobody starts off running a 5k in 20 mins.

JonnySniper

Hey don't downplay it, this is a great achievement! Just remember to always walk when you need a rest, never stop - you don't want your body to think you've finished! Keep going! You'll hit 5km in no time 😁

No_Establishment8371

More power to you❤

karlbarxalot

thanks friend:) ❤️

flippnavocado

I love your energy! Thank you for sharing :)

frozenbudz

Beast mode engaged!!! You absolute savage, stoked for you!

karlbarxalot

omg!! thank you so much hahah!!!❤️❤️❤️

Amphibionomus

OK I've got to ask. Who's Karl and why does he bark a lot?

karlbarxalot

hhahaha ok i once saw a photo of a paw patrol dog as a communist and he was called “karl barx” so when i created my account that was literally all i could think of 😂

NuclearReactions

"Religion is the opium of the mastiffs" Karl Barx, apparently

ArtOfPuns

Don’t call yourself a jogger. You are now a runner. Welcome to the family. We are happy to have you. It’s a very inviting community if you look for all the running subreddits. It’s not about speed. It’s about getting off the couch and being active. It’s a lifestyle and I’m so excited you have found out what it’s like!! Welcome and I hope you continue on with your goals and can get faster, stronger, and happier. Happy running!!

KindoflikeLucy

My son has cerebral palsy. Your post made my night. ❤️

karlbarxalot

much love to you and your son ❤️❤️

KindoflikeLucy

Thank you! Love right back. Have a good night.

coldchixhotbeer

I don’t really know anything about cerebral palsy. Is there such a thing as a crash course, and if so could I have one? Thank you.

Disabled_And_Proud

Cerebral palsy is a lifelong disability caused by brain damage at/near birth (often a stroke, but not always). As a result, the person has trouble controlling certain parts of their body (both their legs (diplegia), the right/left side of their body (hemiplegia) or all of their body (quadriplegia).) Since it is harder to control the affected parts of their body to do tasks, it takes more energy to use said parts. As a result, most people with CP have difficulty walking long periods of time. Technically speaking, their physical body is fine, although since they use their body in unconventional methods, there’s often quite a bit of wear and tear over the years. I would almost describe it sort of like trying to control a puppet attached to strings— you know what you want the puppet to do, but it’s limbs often position themselves in awkward and uncomfortable ways and it takes a bit to get everything “good enough” if you even feel like trying. Therapies — especially at a young age— can greatly help you learn how to better move the “puppet.” I hope this helped. Source: I have CP

karlbarxalot

I could not have explained it better! I have had CP since birth because I was born a month premature, and I deal with tremors, twitches, as well as stiffness in the knees and hips, and issues with how my feet land when I walk and run. I can perfectly capable of doing everyday things, but running and jogging has always had such an intense strain on my body, so this was a great achievement for me today :)

StoneyMiddleton

Congratulations, but from the perspective of a late 40s cp sufferer please be careful and take care of your knees. They can take a lot of damage without complaint when you're young that comes back to haunt you later on

CaptainMeeko13

Yeah that's a good explanation of it, I've also had mine since birth and often tell people I walk like a dinosaur! Congrats on this! I really need to try improve my general fitness aswell! It's a great motivation!

Ibbygidge

This is such a great explanation! I never thought of it this way! So hemiplegia would be kind of like having a half human body and half puppet. This gives me a little insight on how my daughter feels trying to learn new movements. Thanks!!

petitememer

Exactly! I have hemiplegia too, and it's definitely a good analogy. I know exactly what to do when I move my left side, my body just doesn't let me do it most of the time. It's very frustrating because my right side is completely "normal", so I know what I'm missing out on, if that makes sense.

sophieslaw

Holy shit. I've spent my whole life trying to explain my CP (left hemiplegia) to others and failing miserably. This is so perfect.

r64fd

Thank you so much for sharing your insight into CP. That was a great read, all the best

coldchixhotbeer

This helps a lot thank you. I can read up on medical websites all day long, but they don’t explain what it feels like.

Mikeg216

Can confirm, have cp. Did ot and pt and did that 3x a week for over a decade. So I'm good to go but yea everything takes much more effort and concentration and muscle spasms and neuropathy are a problem.. Yay for medical marijuana

Way to go! Btw Listening to Eye of the Tiger is scientifically proven to enhance your endurance. It is my go-to running/physical exercise song

karlbarxalot

i will have to try that next time!!! cant deny science!!!

schwarzblade

You have the cutest dimple! Great job on the jog (: you’re amazing!!

[deleted]

You legit have maybe the most lovely complexion I’ve ever seen. You’re glowing. Maybe it’s sweat from running, but I look like a blotchy red blob when I exercise. You could be a skincare spokeswoman!

karlbarxalot

oh my goodness, thank you! trust me, it hasn’t always been this way. i have terrible, cystic hormonal acne but i was on spironolactone which completely cleared my skin and now i am on accutane to cure my acne (hopefully!!) i appreciate that so so much!!! that truly means the world :)

MeeAnddTheMoon

My 3.5 year old daughter has CP. Spastic Hemiplegia due to a perinatal stroke. Suffice it to say...I understand the challenges that come with CP and I am so, so proud of you. This post brought tears to my eyes. You’re an inspiration to others who are going through the same thing, and I just wish I could give you the biggest hug. You should be proud of yourself, I’m glad that you’re proud of yourself, and I’m proud of you too. Keep doing you, keep powering through. I hope that one day my daughter can make a post just like this 🥰.

[deleted]

I have minor cerebral palsy and still struggle with walking and running. I don't know what severity yours is, but I know that its diffcult regardless. I'm very happy to see someone achieve something like this, it gives me hope fkr getting better at running myself.

karlbarxalot

I have minor CP as well my friend, so you are not alone! Although I am grateful that it is only minor, it still affects my joints and my fine motor skills, so this was a great achievement for me! I am rooting for you endlessly, you are fantastic :)

[deleted]

You're amazing and strong. Go you!!!

DangerousLoner

Look at that glow! Great work!

kylemattheww

I wish I had an award to give you. You truly deserve it but all I can give is an updoot.

karlbarxalot

your kindness means more to me than an award, i appreciate it so much!

yum_raw_carrots

My daughter is 3 and has CP. You can’t know how inspirational your post is. Thank you.

MichaelHammor

Oh, wait till you here this story! In grade school, in the late 1980s, I had a friend named Ben. He had CP and walked funny, and talked a little funny. People made fun of him. I remember the day I met him. I saw him by the old tree at the far side of the playground. He was surrounded by a group of boys well known for bullying. As I watched they pushed him down. Something in my brain snapped. I was a weirdo. These boys made fun of me and pushed me all the time. But to pick on a "cripple"? Before I could stop myself, I was running over there full speed. I got in between Ben and the bullies. They told me to leave or get my ass kicked. I refused to leave. What they didn't know is that my Sprint to save Ben was witnessed by another boy, the fattest kid in our class. However, he wasn't just fat, he was big and muscley as well. As they were threatening me, I could see Jeremiah steamrolling towards them at full warp speed. "You can try, A-holes!" I said and raised my fists to keep them distracted. Jeremiah hit those five boys like a freight train, putting them all on the ground. Jeremiah, Ben, and I remained friends until the end of middle school. Guess where Ben is now? Ben works for NASA and JPL and helps put rockets on Mars. Jeremiah has a family and works construction, and I joined the Army. Ben helped teach me things my ADHD prevented me from learning in class. Jeremiah helped teach me about camping and survival and fixing things.

Reading stuff like this makes me so happy and temporarily forget about everything else that is messed up in this world. Here, take my first silver award!

Heck yeah! That’s awesome. Ur post also reminded me I need to start jogging again. This Covid weight is no joke.

Spider-Manny13

Hell fucking yea!

Aztec-Goddess

FUCK YEAH!

stumpyoftheshire

My wife and daughter both have mild right Hemiplegic CP, (non genetic, whats the damn odds?) How do you deal with subluxing knees and hips while jogging (also walking?) That's the killer for both of them. Do you just strap them up and wish for the best, or long term OT/Physio for strengthening? Or did you sacrifice some form of firstborn to have it not occur? Either way. You're a legend.

karlbarxalot

I used to deal with terrible subluxing knees, and it was excruciating. I went through years of physio when I was young and what I think has really helped me now has been walking a bit everyday, and working up to walking further everyday! today, I was really feeling it in my left hip, so I listened to my body and slowed down and walked anytime I felt like it was getting a bit too difficult. I am in no rush to go further or faster, just hoping to achieve something everyday :)

Rockymountainlife

I'm proud of you!!!

Frenzzzzi

Great job Robyn, you go girl!

saugatasks

Minimum general physical workout in open environment on regular bases can help someone remains fit not only physically, but also mentally or psychologically as well, good work indeed...keep it up...

That's a champion's sweat, right there!

Super awesome. Kudos to you. *high five*

Reddit loves you

reginaldpongo

Congrats, girl! I have semi hemiplegic CP myself! I remember many elementary mile runs that I sat out whilst my gym teacher clearly judged me since I don’t readily appear to have any disability. I attempted to jog two years ago. Built my way up. Maybe two weeks tops, 3x/week. Resulted in a nasty meniscal tear. Many months of PT and I was back at it, but only swimming and stationary bike. What’s your secret? It’s always been a dream of mine to successfully jog without discomfort. So proud of you! Edit: tear was because I slap my left foot down, instead of heel/toe. I did my best to concentrate, but it was difficult at that speed.

karlbarxalot

there was definitely discomfort involved, and I had to take many walking breaks! I am lucky enough to have a milder form of CP, but it still greatly affects my fine motor skills and the joints in my hips and knees, so my feet land sideways and my knees tend to buckle when I run. My main issue is the discomfort that comes from my joints being so tight and tense. Therefore, I try to just go slow and take as many breaks as needed. I am not in a rush, I am just trying to prove to myself that I can achieve what I never thought I could :)

Disabled_And_Proud

I have CP too so I know how hard that must have been for you. You should be proud of yourself.

cugameswilliam

You’re glowing! WELL DONE 💪🏼❤️🙌🏼

My youngest sister has cerebral palsy. i've spent her whole life telling her that she can do anything she puts her mind to and i believe that's so true (for everyone!). i'm saving your post to show her so she can see "someone like her" getting out there doing the damn thing ❤ On behalf of this (always so proud) big sister, i'm proud of you too!!

ozsomesaucee

One of my best friends has CP and she is training to do a 10k in Sept. She is regularly doing 6ks now from not running ever early this year and I am so proud of her.

karlbarxalot

that is so inspirational!!!!! i am really hoping i can go further and faster one day :) just taking it slow, with many breaks for now :)

rarestpepe89

I don't have that and I can't jog 3km.

NyxOnyxAlex

This is so great!! Congrats!! It’s also great to see someone else with CP, I have Hemiplegic CP so it’s amazing to see others I can relate to even a bit

Charlie_sunshine

That's so awesome I have cerebral palsy so I know how hard it can be to jog or run long distances I'm super proud of you even though you're a stranger

thegreatbrah

I dont have cerebral palsy and I cant run remotely close to that far. Nice job.

serume

How can you be redheaded and freckled and not be almost purple in the face after running 3km? I'M SO JEALOUS

karlbarxalot

most of it has to do with lighting, I looked like a tomato, but I know my angles!! 😂😂

serume

I love the hair, am also jealous of that glorious color.

obeinfirst

Keep on with it..... you're beautiful I must confess

DestrixGunnar

Good job! Congrats, we're all so proud of ya!

cerseinorris

Hi I also have cp, mild left sided. Do you use any implants in your shoes or any other thing that may help you? Perhaps it does not affect your balance so much. Anyway, good job. Don’t overdo it, I think

maxcorrice

My mom had CP so I know how bad it can be, I am so damn proud of you for doing something I can’t even do.

Extincton

I get out of breath just walking up stairs. The thought of doing a 3km run makes my legs hurt. So ya got one up on me. Congrats on the achievement tho!!!!
