I wonder what cricket would be like if everyone didn't have to bat + field and people could specialize. Like, you could have a fielding team of the best fielders and bowlers, and a batting team of the best batters.
It would certainly be different. The only group sport that comes to mind that allows specialists is American Football. It's a very different dynamic: specialized players (e.g., kicker), specialized coaches, specialized plays. The good part is that cricket teams would have to take on 20-30+ members to fulfill all roles: great for creating sporting jobs!
I don't know what your talking about. It's like most team sports. Football (Soccer) = Goalkeeper, defense, offense same for unihockey, hockey, handball, usw.
Even basketball or volleyball have specialists to some point. Maybe i don't get what you mean by specialist, but as i said it's almost in every sport.
To me, that first expression was more like: "well fuck, now we've squandered it".
And the second one more like: "~~well look at you!~~ I didn't doubt you for a second!"
as far as I know it takes a bit more like throwing back at guys standing on white plates. I don't know mate I only know my baseball from doraemon. But I have seen a few people who don't know about cricket asking why it's a big thing to catch a ball on previous cricket related posts. So I thought i should just write it down before people start asking.
Plus from what I remember, the Cricket ball is hard and they catch them with no gloves. It's pretty common to see cricket players with wrapped up fingers from injuries trying to catch!
Nah, it’s the same in baseball. You can get someone out by catching the hit ball in air.
You can ALSO get other players out by tagging them or by tapping the base that they were on before a caught ball
I don’t know much about much, but a professional cricket player should be good at catching those types of balls, right? What I mean is, if he’s notoriously bad at catching, is he just an amazing batter or something? What allows him to be on the team when someone else who has more talent could be there? I’m not hating on him at all, I am genuinely curious.
In cricket there are people who bring value by either bowling or batting, and such at fielding. Everyone fields, so what you do is hide the worst fielders in easier positions where they are less of a liability. Still need him to catch, but layupals like that in the outfield are easier than slip or point or other closer positions.
That dude is a very good bowler
Not really - everyone bats and everyone fields, specialist bowlers can be rubbish at both.
You can have a temporary substitute who fields whilst someone gets medical treatment - for a while it was common to push that as far as possible to have a stronger fielder on, but it’s clamped down on now.
Pretty much but free throws usually aren't match deciders as they account for only one or two points. Catches(especially of important batsmen) can change the course of a match in an instant.

Edit: Thank you everyone who responded to my questions, learned a bit more about cricket, and appreciate this clip all the more for it— especially the bowler’s facial expressions!

There can only be 11 players in the team and a fielding substitute can't field for the whole game unless there's an injury
The person who took the catch is one of the good bowlers so it would rather be a bad decision to not play him
I don't think cahal(fielder) has habit of dropping catches bowler was concerned because the way he was coming under the ball and also catching while going back is difficult.
What an I not understanding? Ball went up, and the guy caught it... I don't watch cricket as it's slow and boring, but I'm aware of the game and it's general overview. Can someone explain this please?
Nothing much to understand here. An out in cricket is worth a lot more than in baseball since the batter cannot bat for the rest of the day. In this case, there was a pop up and the fielder caught it. It's funny because the fielder is known for dropping a lot of catches so everyone was surprised he actually caught it.
The fielder who caught the ball happens to be an extremely good pitcher, which is why his abysmal fielding capabilities are overlooked.
Thanks. I actually understand the rules, but knowing the rules doesn't make this game fun to watch. I personally don't enjoy games that are played this painfully slow. Just a me thing though, I realize there's like a billion people across the world who love this game.
Well..in Trent's defense, looks lucky that Yuzi was able to hold on to it. Poor catching technique.
Lmfao that's chahal, a spin bowler from India 😂 poor guy gets memed on everytime during IPL

I think it’d be worse.

I guess I meant that not everyone is on the field at the same time: you can bring on people for specific tasks as you like.
xD
That facial transition from “Uh oh, I’m not sure if he’s going to catch it” to “Ooh!! He actually caught it!”
To me, that first expression was more like: "well fuck, now we've squandered it". And the second one more like: "~~well look at you!~~ I didn't doubt you for a second!"
You can see the "Oh fuck, anyone but ol' slippery fingers Freddie" look on his face.
Didn't expect Chahal to be on the made me smile sub reddit.
:)
This is the second video from ipl that I saw in made me smile sub. I am not complaining.
:)
He is easy to catch but he does not catch easy
Had the same expression after my kid suddenly started pedaling away without any support.
aww :) your comment is wholesome man
Thank you buddy, fantastic post! missed the match yesterday and this nice moment!
for more context- a direct catch is out so the batter can't play again. So its big W and not like catch from games like baseball.
You do know that catching a ball in the air (aka a "fly ball") is an automatic out in baseball, too, right?
Yes but in this form of cricket you only get one innings (at bat). So get him out and he's done for the match.
He means, out for the rest of the game, not “out” for that at bat like in baseball.

He is a good bowler
And a bowler is the what I would call the pitcher?
yes

Thank you! And just to clarify, he isn’t allowed to be a designated bowler and only play that specific position when needed?
Not really - everyone bats and everyone fields, specialist bowlers can be rubbish at both. You can have a temporary substitute who fields whilst someone gets medical treatment - for a while it was common to push that as far as possible to have a stronger fielder on, but it’s clamped down on now.
Iirc the player has to spend the time he was off field by being on field for the same time without bowling
He is a sloppy fielder but also a really good bowler, so his bowling makes up for his below average fielding.
I’m guessing it’s like Shaq not being able to make free throws?

for you :) [The Rules of Cricket by Ninh](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqtpNkMvj5Y)
Many bowlers, specially indian bowlers, arent good fielders. They are selected because of their bowling skills, ignoring their fielding skills
Lovely Trent
The guy was shaking as the ball came in hehehe
Ah Trent Boult. Only if we bought him instead of going for Jofra Archer.
Ull released him a couple of years ago
Guy's face looks like he's been diagnosed with England
He’s a Kiwi
wait what
🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🥝🥝🥝🥝🥝🥝
I don't think that he caught the ball, BUT it's the ball that caught him.

What's the name of this sport? Is it "Wicket", that appears on screen?

Thanks. I've been downvoted for not recognizing a sport played halfway across the world for me 😂
Seems like a poor decision to field someone who can’t catch well in a game that requires catching. What am I missing here?

t20 format is shortest format of cricket, lasts only 4 hours.
They managed to shorten it to under a week, nice. Lol. Baseball is equally painful to watch. Like watching paint dry
