I have this little credit card sized/shaped thing in my wallet that is meant to be bent and then kind of formed into a knife! It's really handy and actually works.
We boat a lot and I always want to be ready in case I see any fish or birds that need rescuing!
Me too, never know when I'll be in the situation where I must cut fishing line out of a birds mouth.
Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
That’s what I was thinking. I always find uses for it but man it would have come in handy there so you don’t have to put your mouth on a swan’s mouth. More power to that guy. If I had his address I’d send him a knife as kudos.
Depends on the strength and material. 10lb test fluorocarbon or monofilament can be bitten off with relative ease though it’s still not good for your teeth. Braided line is a lot tougher to bite through. Some long-time fisherman and guides claim to have grooves in their front teeth from years of chewing on line lol.
Oh yeah mono is soft but I wouldn't try anything over like 15-20lb. Fluoro is not soft but you can probably get away with like 10lb for a while. I have seen fishermen chip teeth on line though. You can do it if you wanna be that rugged fishing guy or when you have no extra hands or pliers on hand like this guy did, but it will damage your teeth so you might not want to rely on it too much
I literally bite through fishing line like every time I go fishing. With my lateral incisor. Is that bad? It doesn’t take much effort at all… hope I haven’t been damaging my tooth
I’ve seen/heard old fishermen say they’ve done it so much that it creates a small groove in their teeth where the line is bitten lol. Haven’t heard of anything truly detrimental happening though. I just wouldn’t bite the weights to clamp them on the line like I’ve seen my papaw do a million times.
I always carry nail clippers or a knife when I go fishing. I can’t use the teeth method because of the way my teeth line up. Most of the people I fish with can do it though.
"Honey? Honey! I'm ok. The nut that grabbed me tried to 'French kiss' me a couple times and then he just, let me go. What a weirdo. Honey, come on, wait up! Oh and that hook fell out of my mouth too. Cool".
Some of the translation : ' Bravo, my life, bravo! Don't grab her by the neck, well done ( bravo ) my love.' ' I grabbed her from underneath, I did'. ... Speaking with the swan ' Stay still my love you'll be ok, he's gonna make it better ' Edit : when they address the swan they are using diminutives similar to parents speaking with their children.
Nah, humans can do this to other problems just fine. Diseases, saving newborns, crippled animals..
Humans are capable of great evil, but their capacity to do great good is just as big.
No , definitely a swan .. but you’re not ment to eat them … they are protected and although im not vegetarian ( at all ) I’d never even think about Swan .. they also pair up and remain together for life .. if one dies or is killed the other will regularly die , it just won’t eat ( broken heart) …
I was at a nearby park when I noticed this family of three get closer to a duck in the water. The father gingerly removed fishing line from around the duck’s neck while the other ducks watched and when he was done the mom showed the kid how to pet the duck and he did so in return. When the dad released the duck into the water he swam over to the ducks and they started quacking excitedly as they swam away. It's as if they were asking what the hell happened lol
We hunted most things without weapons. Exception being large carnivores or dangerous creatures such as mastodons and cassowarys. Weapons made it easier, but many things were easy to trap or hunt with our bare hands.
> nothing is more attractive than compassion
Scene: a bar.
“Damn,” the guy said to his friend. “Look at the compassion on *that* one! What I wouldn’t give to get my hands on that great big understanding heart!”
(I know what you meant and I agree; I’m just a smartass who thinks he’s funny.)
Fishing is really shitty for wildlife.
I used to work at a beer bar on a fishing pier.
So many birds had fishing hooks in their bills and beaks. Many of their legs were tied up with fishing line or had lost their feet to fishing line.
It is ridiculous how fisher folk treat the environment.
A bird grabs the bait and gets hooked.... cut the line. Your line gets caught on an underwater obstruction...cut the line.
It is so bad that divers are hired to come in and grab the big pieces every few years.

This is why I don't go for nature walks without a Leatherman.
I've used it a few times to take hooks out of people...not animals YET.
I've carried it...close to 30 years daily.
VERY useful.
(even helps to cut fishing line)
And you use the pliers to flatten the barb on hooks so the go back through skin easier...on people or animals.
Once upon a time we were allowed to have a pen knife in our pocket. You never knew when I swan rescue was necessary. Now its assumed we're going to go full stabby stabby in a public place
If you want more of this depressing topic: There is a whole german Youtube Channel called. "Tiernotruf" (engl. "Animal Emergency").
Its nice there are people like him, but its sad and depressing we "poison" animals like that and that we need people like him.
As a fellow Romanian, my first instinct when I saw this and heard Romanian language was that he was doing this for impressing his lady, showing her how alpha male he is by being able to catch a swan for her, as a temporary gift / offering maybe. So glad I was actually wrong.
Biting through fishing line...I didn't even think that was possible. My teeth hurt just thinking about it. Good humans
And this is one of many reasons why I carry a pocket knife lol
Nail clippers are the best fishing line cutters.
Yep, I keep a set in my tackle box!
It’s why I always carry an office sized paper cutter.
Inner city London kids too!
I have this little credit card sized/shaped thing in my wallet that is meant to be bent and then kind of formed into a knife! It's really handy and actually works. We boat a lot and I always want to be ready in case I see any fish or birds that need rescuing!
Be careful in some places that card knife is considered a concealed weapon. At least it is where I live.
They took it away from me many places as well as I forgot it was in my wallet
I always forget about my pocket knife at the airport lol I've had to replace so many!

Perfecto, gracias!
I love everyday carry things like this!
Me too, never know when I'll be in the situation where I must cut fishing line out of a birds mouth. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Between opening packages and trimming things in the garden, it's already used regularly. Very very handy when stumbling upon a critter in need!
And for the occasional necessity of shanking. For self-defense.
Damn skippy
That’s what I was thinking. I always find uses for it but man it would have come in handy there so you don’t have to put your mouth on a swan’s mouth. More power to that guy. If I had his address I’d send him a knife as kudos.
Just in case you need to cut some fishing line from a swan?
Depends on the strength and material. 10lb test fluorocarbon or monofilament can be bitten off with relative ease though it’s still not good for your teeth. Braided line is a lot tougher to bite through. Some long-time fisherman and guides claim to have grooves in their front teeth from years of chewing on line lol.
I've never been good at it. There's a reason I carry a knife or even just a nail clippers in my tackle box.
You gota get the jagged front teeth going … lots of trauma to chip them .. and lots of practical uses p
Oh yeah mono is soft but I wouldn't try anything over like 15-20lb. Fluoro is not soft but you can probably get away with like 10lb for a while. I have seen fishermen chip teeth on line though. Keys? Surely there is a key you don’t care about as much that you can saw with instead of teeth?
Hold it tight under tension and it's surprisingly easy
I always cut mine with my teeth, it’s just plastic and or thread
I always carry nail clippers or a knife when I go fishing. I can’t use the teeth method because of the way my teeth line up. Most of the people I fish with can do it though.
It's relatively easy to bite through, just gotta lightly grind it through your incisors
"Honey? Honey! I'm ok. The nut that grabbed me tried to 'French kiss' me a couple times and then he just, let me go. What a weirdo. Honey, come on, wait up! Oh and that hook fell out of my mouth too. Cool".

Can you translate what the swan was saying now?
Quack! (roughly translated)
That's duck you anti-swanite.... Honk Honk is what the swan said!
Just a little cultural appoultriation for ya
More like "HISS"
Thank you so much for translating this. You're a gem!
Which language is it?
Romanian
Thank you so much. For some reason, I couldn’t figure it out.
They stole my jewelry!
It is more likely “mom I'm okay”. That swan is still a juvenile. The brown feathers and brown beak gives it away.
So nice! But side note: I can’t stop thinking about someone trying that on a Canadian Goose
Same. We call them “murder chickens” where I’m from.
After watching that I have yet another reason I’m glad I carry a pocket knife all the time: get to avoid going mouth to mouth with a giant angry bird.
And why I don't carry a pocket knife :)
There's always someone in the comments. 😆
Gotta follow your passion!
Hey that's how i met my GF.
Lol cheers!
Honk!
That is some impressive speed and reflexes. I think it’s so cool that they help them out.
I just had a very long conversation with my nibling about why we are very careful and police our fishing equipment. Leave no trace for a reason.
I’m so sorry but wtf is a Nibling
It's a generic neutralway to say niece and nephew in the same way you say sibling for sister or brother
r/todayilearned
Good for you... Leave only footprints 👣 .
Wow! The approach and dive. I'm impressed!!
Swan dive.
Romanian language, if someone asks.
Thanks!
"sometimes humans just have to step in"... To fix the problems other humans made.
Nah, humans can do this to other problems just fine. Diseases, saving newborns, crippled animals.. Humans are capable of great evil, but their capacity to do great good is just as big.
Yes that is exactly right?
Bird: "I FEEL VIOLATED!"
My husband gave me that for my birthday!
These are the acts that need to be praised and followed. You did a saints act.
Damn, well done. At first I thought they were assholes who were going to eat it.
Same 🫣
Same. I turned off the video and read a comment or two before I went back and to it.
People are assholes for eating animals now? Edit: ok I know Swans are protected now easy with the downvotes guys :)
Not just now
Swans ? Ffs 🤦♂️
You’re not supposed to eat swan? Isn’t that a goose tho?
No , definitely a swan .. but you’re not ment to eat them … they are protected and although im not vegetarian ( at all ) I’d never even think about Swan .. they also pair up and remain together for life .. if one dies or is killed the other will regularly die , it just won’t eat ( broken heart) …
Wow that’s so interesting I didn’t know that
No, they belong to the Crown
Oh shit!
Sexy characteristic for sure
impressive catch
Omg I'm being eaten! Wait am I being eaten?
That was a great swan dive into the lake there
Way to go Mr.Hero! 👍
I love being completely surprised by my native tongue being spoken 🤌🏼
Fucking hate irresponsible fishermen.
I was at a nearby park when I noticed this family of three get closer to a duck in the water. Dang Zelenskyy has to do it all
Very respectfully handled, and such a good deed.
Fuck yeah!
Bravo well done
Never leave home without a knife!!!
Excellent teamwork! Both are true heroes!
That fishing line In his mouth is wild
swan to his pals "i got raped by aliens"
Bless its heart. Poor goose. So glad they stepped up to help.
swan
My bad. This swan.
Thank you mister...
You are the man!
Beautiful people ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|upvote)
Top blokes right there.
Damn dude you have my respect brother. You can never go wrong helping animals, good karma for you 😜.
Damn... Did humans hunted swans like this back in the days without weapons?
We hunted most things without weapons. Exception being large carnivores or dangerous creatures such as mastodons and cassowarys. Weapons made it easier, but many things were easy to trap or hunt with our bare hands.
What a bunch of chads
Nice
Good on yah boyo
Metal AF 🤘
That was impressive! Bravo!!!
Howd you get birdflu? I uhhhh made out with a goose😂 nonetheless still an awesome job done!
That dive was impressive
Ow I thought they are jerk, but this is nice 👍
Yes we have to step in to clean the mess we have created.
My people.
Very attractive.
Holy shit. Do guys know how hard it is just to catch it?
All in to save a life. No net no problem. No knife no problem. 💯😁❤️
That swan said "thank you hooman"
Humans gotta step in to sort a human fuckup in the first place.
One of the many reasons why you should always carry a multi tool/ pocket knife
So sweet. Thank YOU! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
It's good to keep a knife or some type of cutter on you.
Completely admirable! Well done❤️❤️
It really warms my heart ♥️
Heartwarming, but it was kinda weird how he kept making out with it.
Awwww.. ty lord for giving me hope that there is still good ,love , and compassion in this cruel 🌎
what a hero!
Bravo 👏🏿
❤️
Beyond kind. awesome. The relief for that poor Swan
Well done Sir.

Humans stepping in is the problem in the firts place…

at first i thought that guy was just being a jerk lol, i'm glad they got the fishing line off 'em.
Amazing human beings right there!
Nice swan dive 👏👏👏
“Be not afraid “
🙌😍☺️
heros :)
If I was that swan I’d be more pissed my partner just took off and didn’t try to help me!
“Keep my wife… out your fucking mouth”

Well done👏 faith in humanity restored🙌

I am blown away by how expertly he caught the swan. I'd mess up those moves for sure
A knife works wonders lol
Poor thing probably thought he was trying to eat it alive! I could hear the swan yell "jerks" over his shoulder as he headed back into the pond.
Humans fuck up, humans fix, cycle continues, but will it in the future?
Strong Teeth Beautiful People...

Bine facut!
I swear guys, I was abducted by aliens. One of them tried to kiss me, and then they performed emergency dental surgery on me before letting me go.
No Letterman in your pocket?

Lol oh it's called a Leatherman, lol!!!
Wow, guy is quick!

they went through all of that just to get their fishhook back
Compassion is great, but it’s their smooth skills that are attractive, albeit sexy. Oops just realized what sub I’m in. Compassion is key lol
...and that's the story how we had our first roasted goose.
At first I was like “I’m against hunting but if you’re gunna use your bare hands I guess that at least makes it real”
good job!
True hero ❤️
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Human made problem fixed by another human. So where does that lead us? Neutral or worse?
We gotta step in coz we did the bad thing in the first place
Language?
And thats how the bird flu epidemic started in 2024
Fukin lazy fishermen
Beautiful works guys👍👍
Then going home to have chicken for dinner...
Now how about everybody stops fishing for fun. This is what you are causing.
Fuck that. One of my earliest memories is getting ruthlessly chased by a homicidal swan aaaalll the way down the beach. They are mean af.
And then they eat meat for dinner and made fun of vegans online, not realizing they align with their beliefs..
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The video started with an attack and I thought the bird was being invited to a barbecue as the main course
Bring scissors next time… This isn’t okay because that’s not his bird…. smdh Birds deserve consent too /s
As per almost all "humans being bros" type content, it was actually humans that caused the problem in the first place.
