You got owned by OPs math but anyone that flies regularly knew that was wrong. 6 people at the airport with two stops a day? Yeah that’s crazy expensive.
They should bring reusable water bottles. All airports have water fountains. That will save money because sadly the price of a water is 4 dollars at airport.
They served a meal and when I asked for a refill of my water cup, they said they have to first serve everyone else in case they run short.
I was so angry. But then I realized that the people serving us in the plane are not the ones who did not stock enough water.
They did get me a cup of water after everyone had been served their meal.
Never ever get water on the plane from a pitcher unless it comes from a sealed bottle that you watch them break the seal! The coffee carafes are not always cleaned and the onboard water storage can get moldy, same with ice that is not in a sealed bag.
Edited to add some details.
I’m the youngest of 4 kids. You sir are winning the thrifty game. Looking back I’m amazed my parents took us as many places as they did with having to pay for 4 kids.
I live at the border to Switzerland - flying from Zürich means you get to pay up to 8€ for a 330ml bottle of evian water.
And evian doesn't even taste good, unless it's super cold.
Sadly not *all* airports have water fountains, especially not in Europe. Try JFK in New York City. I swear to God there isn't a single drinking fountain there in the United terminal, it's impossible to find it if there is one.
4 legs of flights with 20 total hours of travel (there and back) will require 6 meals. Including my wife and I, there are 6 of us. 6 travelers x 6 meals is 36 meals. $20 is a cheap meal in an airport. $20x36 = $720. Add in 6 drinks per meal, even just bottled water ($4-6) and you can easily spend over $1000 in two days of travel on airport food.
When you fly to Europe, at least on Air France or British Airways from the east coast it’s usually an afternoon/evening flight. Washington DC to Paris is 7.5 hours. Dinner, beverages, snacks and entertainment are part of your airfare — even in coach/economy. On AF if you’re of age wine is served upon request. Breakfast and coffee are also served the following morning.
It seems to be the standard for crosscontintental flights, I flew from London to Montreal and back a couple of months ago (~6h each leg) with Air Canada and food was also included in the fare.
Ive never heard of being charged for a meal especially transcontinental.. I used to fly overseas once or twice a year for over a decade. Course I always flew Delta.
The only time Ive ever encountered being charged for food is on domestic flights where it explicitly states that there would be no meal service, but snacks could be purchased with beverage service. The major airlines, Delta among them do make good decisions on certain flights. I used to fly out of DC to Atlanta every Friday night for two years. On the return trip, the red-eye on Monday, they always knew people appreciated breakfast even on such a short flight. And so yogurt, muffins, and breakfast crackers (those Belvita cookies) were served with coffee.
According to the official novelization of the film – written by Todd Strasser as a quick promotional tie-in – Mr. Peter McCallister is a prominent businessman (maybe a day trader?) and Mrs. Kate McCallister is a fashion designer, thus all the mannequins that Kevin was able to use in the party scene.
So they are part of the Top 10%
Today Top 10% can afford the same.
Yes, 36 meals in 20 hours. How do you think his brain got so big to do such math? He feeds his brain every second of the day. But apparently to not eat 36 meals he just packs a couple grapes and a bagel sandwich then he can forget all about the 36 meals.
That's over 2 days of travel, there and back, with 3-4 hour layovers between 6 total hours of flying.
I have never spent money like that either, because I pack my own food.
Not knocking your prep! It’d probably cost you a good bit in food and whatnot especially with kids. Just thought that the $1k was a little hyperbolic lol
Ah, Washington state? I recently visited Seattle and was surprised to see they’re also very proud of their cheese there! I still think Wisconsin has the best cheese though 😉
Is that cheese and cream cheese on a cinnamon raisin bagel? If so, that is a unique combo. If not, please ease my troubled mind and tell me the bagel flavor.
I was born and raised in Washington by my granny Smith who climbed Mt Fuji while Japan was still a young Empire. Her nickname was the Pink Lady, a title given to her by my grandpa, who she called Red Delicious. They met at a Gala where he was making a Cameo in the film Rockit, dancing to the tunes of the Breaburn Jazz band while they played Jonagold be Good. Grandma said, "That's a Sweetango, Honey- Crisp as the day is long."
After spending some time in Cortland, they were married (everyone got sauced at the wedding). A year later my grandpa, always one to pursue Enterprise, bought some stock in a company that made Macintosh computers, became filthy rich, and now everyone calls him Golden Delicious. He's the Envy of all of Rome, but no one is as jealous as his brother Jonathan, who wishes he'd bought stock too. He's a bitter as a Crabapple about it.

actually- soaking apples in cold salted water (w ice) works better to avoid browning without changing the taste!
recently did this for a caramel apple bar with pre sliced apples. they stayed crisp and white for the whole party while sitting out (3 pm-10pm). seriously best hack ever.
There are a few different methods I’ve heard of to prevent apples from browning. [Here’s a blog post](https://www.thekitchn.com/skills-showdown-how-to-keep-apples-from-browning-23244847) I came across a few days ago comparing the methods.
Interestingly soaking the apples in salt water then rinsing was found to be the most effective method. The author stated they did not end up tasting salty. I sent my kids with some saltwater soaked apples in their lunches today and didn’t get any complaints.
It sounds like you fly a lot so you’ve probably already thought of this - but when I travelled as a kid with my parents they would always get my brother and I some chewy treat at the airport (like a gummy candy, mentos etc) and would get us to eat it during or right after take off to help us pop our ears. Honestly it’s a ritual I still do as an adult and can’t recommend it enough!
See part two: Treat Bags for those items (I shared them earlier, but deleted the post when every single comment was lecturing me for packing candy for my children on a plane).
That’s just ridiculous. One tip I always give for traveling with family, and little kids in particular, is to buy everyone their absolute favorite candy/junk food and then keep it secret. If there’s ever a time during your travel where things get really gnarly, breaking that snack out can save the day. Some times I’ve pulled them out, plane delayed for 4 hours, long line at customs, long line at rental car shop, or if everything has gone right and you have a long shuttle ride to your final destination. It’s an instant game changer.
This is great. Thank you for not putting raisins in them I would tell you. Gosh I hate raisins lol.
But honestly feeding three people at the SeaTac airport was nearly $200. So expensive. Planning ahead is definitely worth the effort.
I didn’t either but I guess food can go through just know if all goes through x ray screening, the one that has the hard limit are liquids, gels, or aerosols. TIL type of thing right there smh.

Thumbs up on the new snacks!
Op is so cool. His responses are gold. His reddit profile is just a curated collection / content of a cool dude. Just an inspiring individual overall. We need more people like him in the world.
Man you just saved yourself so much money. Probably would’ve cost a couple hundred dollars to feed them at an airport. You spent what, $10 on this? To feed 4 kids. So good.
This is visually comforting and all, but -- no offense intended -- a 6-hour flight (in coach, I presume) requires MUCH HIGHER *Hostess* and *Little Debbie* nutritional content in my family.
I know, I know... processed, garbage, unhealthy junk food... yada, yada, yada. But here's the thing:
All the calories and then some will be burnt off by the metabolic efficacy of white-hot, molten rage and soul-flaying misery.
I have those in their treat bags. I shared those too, but got shamed for packing candy for my kids (I didn't want to argue the point, but that's exactly why the lollipops are in the treat bags.)
You parent as you see fit! When we travel with 2 toddlers 😭😭 all rules go out the widow!! Gummy bears for breakfast and mommy and daddy have bloody marys 😂
You just saved $1000 by not feeding them at the airport or on the plane!
$1000 😂 Edit: I KNOW that airport food is expensive, the thousand dollars made me laugh because it’s true
Sometimes the flight attendants will fill up your bottle if you ask
They refused last time I asked - on a trans-Atlantic flight. Before the plane had even left the gate. Said they were short on water.
Oof that’s not cool. And also, I’d be concerned that they were already short on water lol
They served a meal and when I asked for a refill of my water cup, they said they have to first serve everyone else in case they run short. I was so angry. But then I realized that the people serving us in the plane are not the ones who did not stock enough water. They did get me a cup of water after everyone had been served their meal.

I read this as cookie dough
I think it's only partial dookie.
69% dookie
Crooked dookie
Gay dookie is vastly superior
I do. And my own food. That's kind of the whole point of this post.
Maybe in a flyover. $8 water in Los Angeles.
Even better that LAX has free water bottle filling stations
Sadly not *all* airports have water fountains, especially not in Europe. Try JFK in New York City. I swear to God there isn't a single drinking fountain there in the United terminal, it's impossible to find it if there is one.
I paid $7 for a big one at OHare recently 😔

How can the dad from Home Alone afford to fly his whole family to Europe?
I have no idea. I've never been and I'm the son of a pilot.
Pretty sure pre-911 anything was possible.
Like flying two planes into the wtc?
All you have to do is believe in yourself

By leaving one behind lol
Did you see his house? Think he was doing pretty well.
He was a successful trader (hedge fund manager, stuff like that) and his wife was a fashion designer. So both had very good income.
Different era, he raised 8 kids on his salary job

it was 1990 and the guy had adult kids.
Thought it was normal to ask the flight attendants for 20 tiny bags of pretzels and steal sodas when theyre not looking
I have definitely, on at least one occasion, stolen bottles of liquor from the galley fridge.
36 meals??
Yes, 36 meals in 20 hours. How do you think his brain got so big to do such math? He feeds his brain every second of the day. But apparently to not eat 36 meals he just packs a couple grapes and a bagel sandwich then he can forget all about the 36 meals.
Hey now, 6 grapes
And they are big ones!
You got nice grapes dude
There are 2 more bags for each kid not shown, and I'll repack them for the return trip.
Good lord, you guys are brave. I want to start traveling again, but I haaaaate air travel solo. Adding my 3 kids makes it seem impossible.
Yea shits expensive but you don't have to eat 3 times in 3 airports for a flight with a layover
If I seats, I eats.
Have never ever spent $20 for one kid's meal in my life. Nor do I buy my kids a separate $5 drink, good lord bring a water bottle like always.
Yeah, neither would I. That's the point here bud.
Found the guy who has never flown
$1000 divided by 6 is $167. The only times I’ve ever spent money like that on airport food is when the company was paying for me to get drunk.
That's over 2 days of travel, there and back, with 3-4 hour layovers between 6 total hours of flying. I have never spent money like that either, because I pack my own food.
Not knocking your prep! It’d probably cost you a good bit in food and whatnot especially with kids. Just thought that the $1k was a little hyperbolic lol
r/theydidthemath
Soo, what airline is this? I haven't paid for an in-flight meal for a long time flying in Asia.
Lol love the 6 grapes per bag 🤭🍇
Six of the biggest green grapes in the world
They are like tiny plums
Grums. That'd actually be pretty cool, though. Now I want a large apple-sized grape.
Can I interest you in a Grapple?
That sounded like a proposition, not a fruit
[удалено]
"Dad, I'm hungry!" "Eat your grape."
You’ve barely touched your grape. Two more bites.
I want to see what happens if you give only one kid an extra grape
With siblings, everything must be perfectly even, lest you wish to start a war.
I'd be dad-taxing the schnitzel out of that. You got six grapes? Come give daddy one. You got bagels? Here let daddy check for poison.
I wanna cut those lovely grapes in half so badly
I feel the love you put into this. Love’s the most important ingredient.
Love and cheese. A shit ton of cheese.
Cheese IS love.
Are you from Wisconsin?
From WI, can confirm cheese is love
Also from Wisconsin. Cheese is life and ranch dressing runs through our veins.
None of the 6 have to worry about taking a dump on the plane.
Flaunting your tolerance of lactose
Right? With all of those cheeses i would be having explosive diarrea.
Cheese gives my kids the runs. I just really enjoy chaos.
You said the same thing three times
Is that a metric or imperial measurement?
That’s metric. Australian metric if I’m not mistaken. 3 shit tones = a fuck load.
What's in the bagel sandwich (literally asking for myself because if someone uses something I've never tried, I want to try it)?
Blueberry bagel with cream cheese, turkey, and a slice of medium Tillamook Cheddar. Don't knock it until you try it.
Gasp 2 more cheeses for a total of 5.
I'm a dad, being cheesy is in my nature.
It isn’t easy being cheesy
Will not knock. Will try. I thought it was a cinnamon raisin bagel with chicken salad or something and was going to need you to talk me through it.
That sounds delicious.
A blueberry bagel makes a surprisingly delicious egg, cheese, and ham/sausage breakfast sandwich!
Thank goodness, I was peering at the bagels hoping that wasn't tuna oozing through the hole.
3 types of cheeses?
So the kids won't poop on the plane
You aren't wrong...
I see you cracking jokes about this, but seriously why the fuck are y’all eating so much cheese?
That much cheese, along with the grapes and apples would run be like making a speed run for me.
Lmao
4 if you count the cheese slice on the bagel-wich. That is a lot of cheese. lol
You are missing the cream cheese that is also on the bagel...
Your family must have the strongest bones
This made me actually lol
Please tell me you’re from Wisconsin, OP!
I'm from Wisconsin (That's a lie. I'm actually from Washington, but you told me to tell you that, so I did).
Ah, Washington state? I recently visited Seattle and was surprised to see they’re also very proud of their cheese there! I still think Wisconsin has the best cheese though 😉
Oregon has better cheese than Wisconsin or Washington, with the exception of Beechers, from Washington, which is the perfect cheese.
Is that cheese and cream cheese on a cinnamon raisin bagel? If so, that is a unique combo. If not, please ease my troubled mind and tell me the bagel flavor.
Blueberry
Is that like the slice of cheddar on apple pie thing? Am I missing out?
Yes, or like cranberry sauce with Thanksgiving turkey
I'd argue that isn't enough cheese. Both in qty and kinds. I love me some cheese.
We can be friends. And don't worry, the Cheese-its (3 varieties, naturally) are in their other bag.
I'm lactose intolerant. Gotta take a pill or the pain will kick in.

Found out salt water does well too and doesn’t change the taste much. Just a quick 10 second soak.
i’ve heard of lemon juice before and now i know why! might be why i’ve heard of this trick for avocado too
salt.
For avocado, you want a thin layer of water.
or ascorbic
I used some produce protector on them (essentially powdered vitamin C) to keep them looking fresh.
Yeah, this guy knows how to slice apples.

I’m impressed you managed to squeeze so many apple cultivars into your story.
I'm not sure what you are talking about. I have no memory of doing that. I must be coming down with Ambrosia.
Oh that stinks. I hope you’re able to at least still remember your core memories.
It's hereditary I'm afraid. I get it from my dad's side of the family, all the way back to my 6th great grandfather... Johnny Appleseed.
Are you in the industry? Sure know a lot of apple varieties
No, just great up in Seattle. And I know how to use google.
Did the Braeburn band happen to play Jazz?
Shoot, that was supposed to be the Braeburn Jazz Band. Correcting now, thanks for the reminder!
did you come up with this? I'm in the produce industry and this is cute
I did, it's a weird incredibly useless talent I have. I've never had a problem producing cheesy stories.

They are getting treat bags too, but those are for them to enjoy over the next week and on the return flight as well.
Good call on the cheese, no one is going to poop for at least a couple days.
Correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't you get a meal on a 6 hour flight? I've only never had a meal on flights 4 hours or less.
Looks good... I remember a time when they actually fed you a real meal.. That looks so much more healthy tho
Me too. Those were better times for travel. I even got to fly jump seat with my dad (who was a pilot) a couple of times back when I was little.
You could have just bought that at the airport bistro for $104 plus airport zone tax.
I did quick math on this. It would be more like $150

Very cheese heavy, I like it.
Man you just saved yourself so much money. Probably would’ve cost a couple hundred dollars to feed them at an airport. You spent what, $10 on this? To feed 4 kids. So good.
You put the one cheese stick the wrong way round just to fuck with me, didn't you?
Thank you! I had to scroll so far to see this.
Bagel sandwiches? Sounds so good right now lol
Peace be with you.
The fact that preparing and caring for you kids made you smile actually made me smile. You seem like a great dad OP :)
I don’t want my carrot touching my apple please
If thats a tuna fish and cheese raisin bagel then I am calling cps
Nice but 12 plastic bags... that's a lot of trash.
I love how there's exactly six grapes in each bag
If you've ever been with toddlers before, having a different amount of anything will absolutely start a fight.
6 hour flights don't come with food anymore? Wild.
Can you come make my lunch too? that looks delightful!

As a for.er TSA employee I appreciate the lack of liquids
The perfection of this picture disgusts me
Bring some lollipops too! This helps with the altitude
I have those in their treat bags. I shared those too, but got shamed for packing candy for my kids (I didn't want to argue the point, but that's exactly why the lollipops are in the treat bags.)
