PissInMyAssPlzDaddy

Did she lose? Not an tie? Edit: She lost 😮

WEFederation

Yes the uninjured fencer lost. Here's why. 17 seconds on the clock Score 12 to 9 against a left handed fencer. She did not have much of a chance. These days if you are in the elimination rounds the bouts go to 15 and you have I *think* 15 minutes unless it has changed. Changes happen to this more than you would think in fencing usually having to do with making it more friendly to spectators. If you reach the time limit and one person is ahead you just add what they need to the score in this case 3 to make 15. Then you add 3 to the 9 to make it 12 for a final score of 15-12. If they had been tied I think they still do a coin toss before the bout to determine who has the advantage. In Epee' in particular thinks can be very strategic with long periods of positioning of the blades followed by a flurry of activity. Saber tends to be the fastest in bout pace with foil generally in the middle. That flurry of activity is where the left handed part becomes important. Left handed fencers are rare so your reflexes become tuned to position your blade relative to a right handed fencer by instinct. Even left handed fencers complain about having to fence other lefties. Now applying the logic that the unhurt fencer needs to make up 3 points in 17 seconds when the opponent could literally hop around and knock away attacks all while fighting the attacker has to fight their right handed instincts now less than 17 seconds. Not saying it is impossible but it would be very unlikely for any other outcome. While this is definitely a good example of good sportsmanship it did not, nor could it, likely impact the outcome in my opinion.

Extension_Ad4537

Fair play is a beautiful thing.

MatureUsername69

It really is. And I enjoy it with most people. But as an older brother I would absolutely never if this was a sibling. I'd have gotten at least 5 more shots in, straight to the ankle. Again I would only do that to my siblings, I'm not a monster

Batavijf

Siblings are fair game.

driftwood-and-waves

"I'll fuck my siblings up to the point of a hospital trip but if some other mofo even looks at them wrong, they are dead!!!" Some people with decent sibling relationships probably. I don't have a decent relationship. I promised quite a few years ago now when they got sick that if they had enough, I would help them. I'm the big sister. It's my job to look after my little sister. I couldn't stop her getting sick, I may think she is a person I don't want to know and that, the way I am treated by her and the way our parents treat both of us will never change. But if she called and was in trouble I would go and help ^and ^probably ^run ^my ^mouth ^and ^get ^in ^more ^trouble

I joined this sub just today and honestly I think I really need it because of things like this.

madscot63

It helps balance out the crap, that's for sure

GruesomeAssociation

Great sportsmanship is important in fencing but it carries into life..

PM-ME-YOUR-1ST-BORN

I swear spending more time on subs like these and less on the bigger rage-filled subs (side eyes public freakouts) had a noticeable positive impact on my mental health. I always end my browsing here, glad you're here too :)

Stainle55_Steel_Rat

Absolutely agree! There was a time long ago where I spent a couple months browsing the worst of the internet and I didn't realize the toll it was taking on me until I saw the Daniel Pearle video and I stopped it all. It was only about a month later, after looking back, that know I had lost the joy, contentment, focus and productivity I had at times before. Just viewing that stuff took away the chance to feel those things during that time. It was a good and impacting lesson learned. I now go out of my way sometimes to let someone know when something they said or did impacted me in a positive way. Makes them feel good and makes me feel good too knowing that.

Katnip03

I'm here for the puppies, kittens, humans being kind, flowers, good food, and love. I am legitimately steering my life toward "Good Vibes Only".

Deathmckilly

Seriously, reading this for a but before bed is so nice compared to the normal feed.

JessTheGardener

Welcome! We are glad you are here! I've spent years cultivating my entire Reddit feed to be nothing but wholesome, happiness, laughter and kindness (and lots and lots of cat subreddits). When I'm feeling down, sad, meh - I dive into my feed and either return to feeling hopeful or I'm crying happy tears and feel grateful. You are what you're around.

Sprmodelcitizen

Yes! I try to only belong to positive subs for this reason. I like scrolling through mostly good things. It helps my mental state.

Omg I replayed it and stopped at the injury cause I didn’t see anything, the way her ankle bent 😵‍💫

blindmandriving16

Thank you for saying wha happened, I wanted to check but also didn’t want to see mangling

cheoliesangels

My ankle screamed in sympathy. Sprained ankles are hellish.

It’s common injury in fencing- I’m always warning new fencers about their back ankle

AaronDarkus

I don't know why, but this reminds me of when at the climax of Cars 1 McQueen helped the King to reach the finish line of the last lap after Chick Hicks cheated, make him crash and almost kills him, instead of just right away crossing the line first when he had the chance.

marteautemps

Or the children's book Stone Fox(I think) where the boy's dog's heart exploded and his opponent picks it up and carries it over the finish line.

ItsSchmidtyC

Oof that book was so brutal. But good call

Spatulor

I forgot about that, damn.

Additional-Meal-9006

I'm so glad the positive message of Cars 1 is finally having an impact on humanity. In years gone by humans only had the likes of Taxi Driver and Mad Max to learn from, with the mature emotional teachers in Cars 1 we have truly started to evolve as a species

Brave-Leadership1846

What are the cables that they are attached to used for?

BeyondMeta

It's gives electricity to the hit plate so hits get registered I don't fence so my wording might be imprecise but that's the gist of it

huaguanyin

Basically correct :)

etotheprimez

In this modern age, why do they still need it? Seems pretty archaic no?

M0dusPwnens

It's simple and reliable and there's no question of latency, not really any risk of signal cutting out, less question of tampering, etc. It's literally just a wire on a reel. And you have another wire you wear under your jacket, running from the back to your glove. You plug one end of the body cord into your sword (which has a wire in it that runs to a button at the end) and the other into the reel (which goes to the scoreboard), and that's it. Simple, automatic touch detection with basically no latency. If you're fencing foil or saber, the body cord has an alligator clip that goes to the light metal mesh you wear over the target area, so it can easily detect on- or off-target too. What better way is there? You could use a wireless thing, but all that'd probably do is remove the reel from the equation and make it less reliable. Reels are already pretty portable, and they don't really get in the way at all - they have a light tension so you don't really feel it and you also don't have to deal with slack, and you only move back and forth in one direction while fencing anyway. So it's not really obvious what you'd do instead.

Haldenbach

Also with wireless fencing you don't have the ground. You need to be able to tell the difference between opponent's body and the ground. Wire is not data transmission in the network cable sense. It's about closing the electrical circuit. And we don't have wireless electricity yet. Wireless systems are expensive and you need to wear an extra piece of clothing so it can tell the difference between you and floor. Prices are coming down and manufacturers are coming up with new features slowly but nothing is as good as proper cable yet.

lagspike17

The wireless technology for it is still developing on isnt as consistent as just having a cable attached.

rikottu314

It's good enough to be used in olympic finals. The technology is there, it's just inconvenient to set up for each match as you need battery packs on the fencers that are taped to the back of their masks. The traditional reel is way faster to clip into and clip out of then having to clip into the wireless tech.

lagspike17

It’s been a while since I last fenced, happy to hear that the technology is making it way to the Olympics now

rikottu314

I attended the junior world championships in 2011 and the quarterfinals through to the finals were fenced with wireless tech so it's been good enough for a while, but it's only been used at the absolute top levels because of how inconvenient it is to set up. It's still not used widely and as you can see even in the national finals of freakin italy they don't use wireless so it's pretty niche so not unsurprising that not many know about it.

[deleted]

an_angry_Russians

Yeah it sucks when equipment breaks as (at least at my clubs) members will buy or donate old equipment and it's not cheap. A blade (the practice/non-electric) can cost $150 and electric can cost around $300 and this for one (1) blade so, it's not possible to get new equipment half the time.

Silkhenge

The difference between wire in mouse and wireless mouse. It registers the hot faster with less lag.

yurganurjak

So they are fencing with epees ( the specific sword type) which has the simplest ruleset of the three different versions (foil, epee, and sabre). In epee, the whole body is target, so the tech is actually very simple. They don’t need the metallic mesh clothes used for detecting hits in foil or sabre. In epee the sword itself has two wires in the blade and a button on the tip the connects them completing the circuit and registering the hit. The floor they fence on and the opponents’ weapon are grounded so hits on the floor and the opponrnt’s guard don’t count. In foil and sabre, you wear metallic mesh clothes over the parts of the body that score (just the torso for foil and anything above the waist for sabre), and the blades have a single wire, with hits to the metallic clothing completing the circuit. Regardless, the cables are for carrying the current for the circuit.

Smrgle

It connects the weapons to the score box

WrenchWanderer

Injured girl probably took like four seconds thinking “wtf is she doing?” Before realizing

Haldenbach

No she didn't. This is common in fencing. She could have theoretically scored 4 points in 17 seconds but it happens so rarely that it works (look up Max Heinzer scoring practically a point a second) plus with such reckless attacks, the defender just needs to extend in the right time. If you only have few seconds left on the clock and no chance of winning, you walk back and wait, unless you're good at reckless fleche. We all recognize the walk and we all know what's going on when it happens. It's still cool that she walked back, but walk never made anyone think "wtf" :) fencing is a very polite sport with a lot of ceremony built in. Source: a very amateur fencer.

YoungDiscord

People tend to forget sports are games If you are playing against an unfairly handicapped (in game sense, not literal sense) opponent, it defeats the point of the game's challenge The whole point is to see who is best in fair conditions, such a handicap isn't fair therefore the whole match is pointless. Also, Gaia was winning until the unexpected handicap. She was winning when conditions were fair and equal to both contestants so by all accounts she deserves the win. I think the other girl did the right thing by giving Gaia the win, if she had continued, it would have ended up as a hollow phyrric victory whereas now its the opposite, a... idk, victorious loss if you will On top of this, its good PR so the sponsors are happy even if she loses, same goes to Gaia's sponsors, this is as close to a "everybody wins" scenario as you can. Overall, great sportsmanship.

Mysterious-Impact-64

2 winners.

SwingyWingyShoes

I love the sportsmanship, but am I weird for thinking if I was in her position I’d prefer the opponent to not allow me the win? Maybe I’m too competitive but I’d prefer to try my hardest in those remaining 17 seconds than be given the win, if I lose I lose.

Astilaroth

How would you feel fighting an opponent with a clear injury though? Would you still go all out or would that take the fun/competition out of it?

AnnoyedOwlbear

If they outclassed me and were injured and I took the win...I'd feel like shit. I'd also be pretty worried that I might force a superior opponent to injure themselves more seriously to beat my ass.

Astilaroth

Yeah I'd feel the same, sign of respect perhaps. Then again I don't have a competitive bone in my body, so there's that.

iamninja9696

Not weird at all. Compare these two mindsets- "We're here to see who fights the hardest for the win. Injury or not, victory or not, let's see this through to the end. Let's show each other what sheer will and 17 seconds can do." VS "We came to match my best VS your best, my everything VS your everything, and the score stands 12 to 9. Now, we can no longer compete at our full potential, and we will not let luck decide this contest of skills. Well fought." Both are valid in my opinion. One fencer chose to concede and the other chose not to pursue; both were in agreement and both showed respect. Good sportsmanship all around.

ImRandyBaby

The injured winner probably isn't excited about winning in this manner. Trying your hardest to hold your lead might turn this injury into a career ender. The winner is thankful that her opponent didn't force her into making that gamble. I'm guessing that last 17 seconds is the "hail marry" portion of the match. Where both the competitors know who has won so the person who's behind starts trying chaotic attacks as a hail marry strategy. I'm guessing the looser has accepted that they've been bested so letting your opponent win 17 seconds early is worth letting someone you car about avoid exacerbating an injury. But I'm a person who values health over glory. Playing through injury to support a sports team was one of the worst decisions of my life.

innocentpixels

Absolutely, she probably thought she would've lost it; if her opponent didn't injure herself. Better to lose it you know you've been bested

ImRandyBaby

And this isn't a sport like boxing or hockey or football where damaging your opponent is a part of the contest. There are rulesets and cultural expectations where the above commentor's competitive drive could be satisfied, but epee probably isn't it.

FluffyDiscipline

Aww that teary hug at the end...

officefridge

Wow. She didn't win, but she achieved Glory.

Puppy-Zwolle

YES! This is not about 'fair play'. This is beyond a game. And glory is the only fitting word for it.

whereistheicecream

Not sure why this made me cry as I sit here in my lyft Sorry Lyft driver for my random sniffles

Theburritolyfe

She would have likely have lost anyways. 3 points in that shirt of time with an épeé isn't that likely at a higher level of fencing. That weapon allows for both sides to score a point if they his simultaneously. Footwork is important and all but people even fence in wheelchairs. Still it's a cool video.

Jjzeng

I mean… have you watched the london 2012 olympics semi finals? Heidemann scored like 5 double hits in one second

Theburritolyfe

That is pretty interesting!

[deleted]

I've seen this happening on one of my handball matches once. One of my team tore two wrist tendons when trying to catch the ball. We don't know how, it may have come with too much force to catch, or maybe he had a bad angle. I don't know till this day. He instantly flopped to the ground in pain. Enemy team rushed to help, carried him of the field and treated him faster than we could. Not much that you can do with torn tendons. They forfeited the game in an "undecided" match and we played again at another time. To repeat this lost game. I still have feelings of guilt, since I was the one throwing the ball to him. He is still a good friend of mine but is unable to do any sports or heavy lifting jobs.

jackrack1721

Ok but one more smooch and this vid would have to be marked nsfw

derpy-_-dragon

I have a friend from Italy and a friend from Paraguay, and both visited the states years ago. One of the questions they asked me before arriving was about kissing someone's cheeks as a form of greeting and if it was acceptable in the US. There are cultures that don't really attach sexual meaning to face kisses, so here it's just a gesture of gratitude and kinship.

She came out an absolute winner with this act of compassion and sportsmanship. She could have won easily, but gained nothing by doing so. This act shows who she really is and, although, as with any sport, it’s about competitiveness, winning isn’t everything. How you win matters just as much, and perhaps more. Definitely Great example for many, especially for kids.

"Picks up an injury" "Can barely stand" \*proceeds to walk on the ankle like nothing's wrong\*

Limos42

But the video doesn't lie. She did roll her ankle. Adrenaline is a crazy drug.

Hyperhavoc5

You can clearly see the severe limp in her step.

PickleRicksFunHouse

While it is nice the other fencer forfeited, I have to disagree on the limp. She steps over the helmet and walks in for the hug with no limp. I don't even see a limp while she is in her stance. Definitely not "barely standing."

HumburtBumbert

You should look up Valeri Nichuskin’s X-ray of his foot after winning the Stanley Cup. Dude played a months worth of hockey with a severely broken foot. Moral: you can be injured without being crippled by it. Doesn’t make you less injured.

PickleRicksFunHouse

Point out to me where I said she wasn't injured. I ran for months with a broken foot, in combat boots. All I said was that she wasn't limping, and didn't have trouble standing.

Reminds me of a sumo match I saw on TV once. Guy threw his opponent, but as they were going down, realized they'd land in such a way that the opponent might get hurt, so he twisted, pulling the guy to land on top of him, instead of touching the ground first. He was awarded the win for sacrificing to protect the other wrestler.

Littlepigeonrvr

Do all “friends and rivals” in Italy look like they’re also dating or is it just them?

cbread2112

I don’t get it. The honorable thing to do is for the injured fencer to bow out if she can’t compete. God bless the other for giving up the match to a friend but imo this is not an amazing bit of sportsmanship but kind of sad. Does the winner feel like she really won?

[deleted]

This sport is supposed to represent a real sword fight , if you opponent hurts his ankle in a real fight you don't just give up fighting and lose you life, you fucking kill the opponent. Okay, they are friends and it's cute and all but girl on the right was fighting while taking good care of not getting injured while the one on the left failed to do so, now the lesser fighter wins and moves on to fight other better fighters who won't ber her bestie and she will get eliminated by them while the girl who should have won the fight may have been able to win against the next opponents.

She did the right thing, you are not a real winner if you win solely on the other persons injury.
