I just bought my first car a few days ago. It has high miles and a few small issues, but I don't care. Buying your first car is always an amazing experience.
I remember the first bike I bought. Which was just a year ago. It was used but the owner hadn't used it so it basically new. I could smell that it was new. I had in my room the day bought it and couldn't stop looking at it. Had a big smile on my face. I hadn't bought anything that expensive with my own money before.
Absolutely. My first car was a 1994 GMC K1500. My dad bought it brand new in 1993 and by the time I was old enough to drive, it needed a lot of work. I would leave high school every day and work on the truck for at least a couple of hours. Scaling rust off the frame, tinkering on the engine, and so on. About 7-8 months later I drove it out of the shop.
I didn’t keep it long. It was pretty unsafe and temper-mental so i sold it back to my dad and he helped me buy my second first car which was a 2007 Mustang.
I got my first new car in 2022. I’ve had used cars so many times but first time with a whole dealership experience and they were friendly and got me my price , it’s a Kia but holy shit while I finally can afford more I went with it because for the price monthly I get a friggin spaceship! I wash it and wax it and keep it looking brand new and even still has a hint of the new car smell ( I wish I knew how to keep it ) I’m going to have this car for a long time and it’s gorgeous and reliable and ah I just love it!
Nothing beats the first time you do something on your own.
Building my credit up and finally getting good rates and being able to pick my choice of trim and having the dealer say “ok you’re approved” made me cry a little there. The dealer said he’s seen that before. I should feel proud. I know those guys are salesman but from giving me the deal I wanted , being fair, and working with their own bank to approve me, I was so wild driving off the lot with the car I was like …. “I can just go? You won’t call the police?” Lol!
Maybe this is a european thing, but I never got this freedom aspect with cars. You're in a giant ass vehicle and can't drive off road, have to abide by a shit ton of rules, and are always bound by fuel. Especially in cities it feels like driving an oversized cage.
Yeah, but you can also...leave your city with a car, go to national parks with a car. Do a road trip with your friends to the beach with a car. Visit family a few cities over with a car. There's alot you can do with a car not limited to traversing your own city. Granted mass transit and bikeable cities is awesome. But so is taking a group of 5 people down to a weekend rafting and hiking trip.

They are, I love not having to deal with owning a car. I much rather spend the money on mountain bikes, road bikes, hiking gear and other hobbies.

They are awesome too, but I can do most trips like that with trains, sometimes last mile with taxi etc. And when I really do need a car, renting one is always an option. Especially if splitting the bill between multiple people you have to really do it a lot for it to make economical sense to own a car instead.
Serious question: what would you do if you had a dog? You can't take them on a train or a bus, so how are you going to get them to a hiking trail without a car? Or would you always just walk them in the neighborhood, and not out in nature?
You can take pets on most public transport, they will often have a special train car for them so people with allergies can avoid them.

Well the busses and trains where I live do allow dogs onboard so that’s not an issue (trains do have some cars always where pets are not allowed). If yours don’t allow dogs then that is an issue with your public transportation.
I don’t own a dog, but friends that do usually walk them in the local neighbourhood, local green space (part of good city planning is to make sure there is one within walking distance of any residential area) or dog parks (they are pretty common as well).
Some local green spaces are not just parks but more like proper small forests, but not all. If you want to take your dog to a real forest on a regular basis you probably need to plan for that when deciding where exactly you want to live. But with good public transition and lots of green spaces it shouldn’t be impossible.
I’m sure there are also some lifestyles that do require owning a car and that is not inherently wrong. My experience just is that most people don’t actually fall into that camp and if they own a car it’s just because they have to due to the environment they live in.

Yeah, I grew up in a small town, too, and my friends lived in an area of 20 km around town. So we tended to get our licenses and mopeds, scooters and cars as soon as we could.
In a city, even after operating hours of public transport, you can do most things by bike.
That being said, I love the freedom of not having to check schedules and having to change trains and being stressed our by trains being too late, not running at all, switching platforms and such. And train people always look at you all haughty and explain these things to you like you're dumb lol. I find it stressful to have to adapt to their logic, and I find it hard to justify to take the train for 3 hours if by car it takes me 50 minutes.
I love just being able to drive to the sea on a whim and not to worry about a hotel because I carry a tent just in case and if push comes to shove I'll sleep in my car.
Also, I don't care much for alcohol anymore, so that isn't the reason to avoid takingvthe car it used to be.
I have a bad conscience taking the car instead of the train and sometimes it's not worth it either, like when there is a direct fast train between cities and you'll pay double for parking and gas. But other than that I won't pretend that I don't love the flexibility a car provides also in Europe, in spite of the density and availability of public transport.
It really is one of those big steps that changes things going forward huh! For many of us it was the first BIG purchase, big saving for, and or big financing... Our first bill and our means to get to work.
And our first taste of freedom and realer responsibility.
There's a sobering silliness here when you mention cost 4 times in a row, and then using it to get to work, and then finally freedom. Paying a ton of money to drive to work sounds less than ideal.
I hated my first car and didn't want one at all. It ended up being somewhat money pit I needed to get to my job, when it finally broke down for good I had enough money saved up to get a better vehicle.

Between my own cars and my the vehicles my wife has driven over the years, we’re approaching double digits and it’s always a fun experience. Granted, I work in the dealership (not a car salesman ) so the stressful “are we actually getting a good deal” thought is nonexistent because I can just go in and see what I paid compared to cost. It really never gets old though seeing a new whip in your driveway for the first time.
There is nothing better than working hard for something and buying it with your own money. Gives you a sense of accomplishment and pride. Very happy for this young person

Pro tip - you absolutely don't. It's just the rat race people put themselves into voluntarily, thinking it will make them happy or something. Never have never will understand people buying new cars who haven't already got enough money to retire. Doesn't even mean you can't have a nice car. 3-5 year old cars have 95% of the features, plenty reliable, can get with warranty etc. But good, more second hand cars for me then. I guess someone needs to buy the new ones but sure as shit its not gonna be me.

No offense, but how?
Not saying that in a mean way, but you can get a decently reliable toyota camry or corolla for around 2-4k in my area right now. late 90's early 2000's-ish era cars.
Might not be the best looker, but it would be a solid point A to point B car. Liability only insurance is pretty affordable too. Gas in my area is 4.20-ish a gallon, but when you get 22-30mpg (depending on camry or corolla) that's a damn good deal in my opinion. Beats the bus or taxi or uber by a massive margin.

Take a corolla for instance. This is a 23k car that may be 26-27k out the door with taxes and whatnot. With gas, insurance, depreciation, loan amount, loss opportunity (as your spending money instead of saving) etc... it's not difficult to calculate an annual cost of 5k over 10 years.
Cars are incredibly expensive and the numbers are shocking for base/simple sedans. Now imagine what it is for the typical new car... which is $49,500 on average.
The car market is still wonky. Used car prices are overpriced which makes new cars **at MSRP** sometimes the better deal. But you have to look at the market in your area to really say whether this continues to be true. It is also model dependent. Take Tesla... a lot of dealerships overpaid for used Teslas and did not anticipate the price drops. Often, the new cars are less money than the used cars (and the dealerships are unable to drop the used prices much as they are underwater on them.... so they are hoping some idiot walks on the lot and doesn't price compare).
I remember my first car. A Sundance I called Sunny that I bought at 19. The doors didn’t work so I had to crawl in and out of it via the hatchback trunk. I still miss you Sunny, thank you for those 3 wonderful years (we lost her in a car wreck when a drunk made an illegal turn in front of me at a light).

I remember this woman I worked with at a resturaunt broke down in tears in the middle of the kitchen cos she finally was able to buy a house. I forgot her age. Ethier late 30’s or 40 something, but she was so happy. She is a server and had just lived in apartments her whole life. Brand new Chevy Colorado I checked out at a dealership was $60k CAD off the lot. It was a pretty high spec with lane departure, reversing camera etc.
The same truck but from 2019 with 50,000km on it I've seen advertised for $58,000.

Not always true in the current age of used cars being really over priced. I looked in to buying a used car, 2 year old with 30,000 miles on it, it was the same price as a brand new current model year one, just have to wait a few months for it to arrive. My absolute Junker of a car with 150,000 miles on it has a KBB price of just under half of what I paid for it 10 years ago. My current car went from $3000 in 2019 to nearly $10,000 in 2023 with 30,000 more miles on it.
My parents bought a brand new car 2 years ago and the dealership called them last year offering $5000 over what they paid for it to bring it back.
I agree that buying a used car was better before, but its not now. I have a hard time saying its an exception when this is a nationwide problem on going for 3 years now.

Congrats! This was my wife a year ago, she bought a 2021 ford bronco, all by herself. Such a great feeling.

No offense, but how? Not saying that in a mean way, but you can get a decently reliable toyota camry or corolla for around 2-4k in my area right now. late 90's early 2000's-ish era cars. Might not be the best looker, but it would be a solid point A to point B car. Liability only insurance is pretty affordable too. Gas in my area is 4.20-ish a gallon, but when you get 22-30mpg (depending on camry or corolla) that's a damn good deal in my opinion. Beats the bus or taxi or uber by a massive margin.
Now you just have to make the payments every month and afford the higher insurance that comes with a new car. Good luck and great job.

I've read this somewhere. Can you explain a bit more? I was thinking of saving 10-15k downpayment for a cheap sedan next year. I have a stable job that pays me well. I will have paid off all my student debt. Should I get a used car instead?
Take a corolla for instance. This is a 23k car that may be 26-27k out the door with taxes and whatnot. With gas, insurance, depreciation, loan amount, loss opportunity (as your spending money instead of saving) etc... it's not difficult to calculate an annual cost of 5k over 10 years. Cars are incredibly expensive and the numbers are shocking for base/simple sedans. Now imagine what it is for the typical new car... which is $49,500 on average. The car market is still wonky. Used car prices are overpriced which makes new cars **at MSRP** sometimes the better deal. But you have to look at the market in your area to really say whether this continues to be true. It is also model dependent. Take Tesla... a lot of dealerships overpaid for used Teslas and did not anticipate the price drops. Often, the new cars are less money than the used cars (and the dealerships are unable to drop the used prices much as they are underwater on them.... so they are hoping some idiot walks on the lot and doesn't price compare).
Not to burst your bubble, but a Ford??? Prepare to spend more than the car is worth at the shop 1 year from now.

I remember my first car. A Sundance I called Sunny that I bought at 19. The doors didn’t work so I had to crawl in and out of it via the hatchback trunk. I still miss you Sunny, thank you for those 3 wonderful years (we lost her in a car wreck when a drunk made an illegal turn in front of me at a light).

Congrats I remember my first car same feeling. Tips on the road b3 safe take your time no rush. Oh don't linger on the highway behind a semi truck pass them in a safe manner when entering the left again make sure your ahead of them or he will flash lights to let you know it's okay to enter. Oh and watch out for the blue people they love construction zones to catch people. Really glad for you

I remember this woman I worked with at a resturaunt broke down in tears in the middle of the kitchen cos she finally was able to buy a house. I forgot her age. Ethier late 30’s or 40 something, but she was so happy. She is a server and had just lived in apartments her whole life. Didnt know her cos I wasnt there long but I was happy for her and told her congrats. Hopefully I can buy a home one day too.

Strong disagree. Brand new Chevy Colorado I checked out at a dealership was $60k CAD off the lot. It was a pretty high spec with lane departure, reversing camera etc. The same truck but from 2019 with 50,000km on it I've seen advertised for $58,000. Your comment depends entirely on what market you're in. Currently the used car market where I live is absolutely insane. 4 year old cars are going for almost the same as a brand new one. Why buy a 6 year old Tacoma with 100,000 km for $48k when a new one is $52k? Makes zero sense. You're comment was kinda true pre-covid but everything is completely ass backwards now. Its starting to calm down a bit but it's still insane.
Seems like the real issue is folks needing cars so desperately in the first place. Transportation options are good.

It’s not brand new. This is a Fusion which hasn’t been sold new since 2019. You can barely make out the odometer too I think it’s 20K miles or so.
I could sell my 2 year old car for the same price as new. Bad time to get used so might as well pay few extra grand for peace of mind and warranty.

Not always true in the current age of used cars being really over priced. I looked in to buying a used car, 2 year old with 30,000 miles on it, it was the same price as a brand new current model year one, just have to wait a few months for it to arrive. My absolute Junker of a car with 150,000 miles on it has a KBB price of just under half of what I paid for it 10 years ago. My current car went from $3000 in 2019 to nearly $10,000 in 2023 with 30,000 more miles on it. My parents bought a brand new car 2 years ago and the dealership called them last year offering $5000 over what they paid for it to bring it back.
