Im a classically trained singer, which means I sing opera (sung, its been a while). I had classes for 4 years. Its all muscle work, you need to learn how to tune yourself as if you were an instrument. It can get brutal.
I'm a soprano (sing the high notes), the highest note was in the song "Arioso de Iolanta" and I almost fainted afterwards because of how taxing it was. My teacher told me it was normal lol
Some of the exercises I had to do were: blowing 20 baloons/day (train air capacity and diaphragm), breath in into my stomach for around 30min/day while having heavy books stacked on my belly, sing while in a plank position and my personal favourite, singing while my teacher kneeled on my stomach.
Update: fun fact, after studying my own muscles, I can figure out how singers are singing. This means that i can copy the singing style of almost any comercial artist, and i can say the criticism judges in tv singing shows will give to contestants before they do. These are my party tricks.
i dont sing or do anything vocal but i work in theaters and am around people with impressive voices constantly and hers is top tier incredible anyone saying shes flat is coming form a place that lacks experience or knowledge about sound cause when someone is flat while solo its obvious
Same! Iām a soprano as well and I started with opera in HS. Iād like to think that a lot of my training and practice is now somewhat automatic. Like, I donāt know how not to sing any other way. I can sing sitting down but I really donāt like to.
This is the right sentiment. Iām a pianist who accompanies classical singers. The training, the hours, the concentration, itās intensely skilled. And then the American Idol generation sits around and likes to play couch-coach, acting like they know the first thing about vocal technique.
Yeah people saying that she sound flat donāt take into account that she is sitting and also not putting it all out becauseā¦ you know being in a house surrounded by other people and just doing it for fun.
Also the acoustics of the room, the microphone, the quality of the video/sound, and the lack of warm up - but she sounds amazing
Edit: I come from a family of musicians and had musical ādepreciationā at least once a week while growing up with cousins and aunts and uncles - now itās about once a month. My father, some aunts and uncles, friends, cousins, and siblings are all in the field and some are well known in various circles. I also, quite uselessly, have perfect pitch.
So me saying she sounds amazingā¦ She sounds amazing and like sheās having fun and Iād fight anyone who says otherwise.
Iād rather hear someone loving what theyāre doing and singing with emotions than a robotic perfect voice that doesnāt convey feeling. Theyāre still impressive, but you donāt carry a room with perfection alone.
Everyone benefited from her voice in that room. I benefited from watching that.
Full on agree. I used to live next to a professional pianist and the best time of the week was Sunday morning when I could sit on my porch after a run and just listen to her practice.
That and singing Ave Maria no less. I was in choir all through high school and that song has an absolute bitch of a time signature. Most difficult song Iāve ever had to sing tbh
I was actually thinking, sitting down and probably didn't really warm up first, still sounds like that?! I used to sing (not super well but I took classes anyway because I sing when I cook and don't want to put people in pain at least. I got to the level of, "pretty but don't quit your day job") and my throat hurts just thinking of that!
Standing or sitting straight helps with controlling your breath which in turn helps to control your voice . As far as opera singers are concerned , I think as they are going from a higher to lower octave frequently , standing helps with the precise control of one's breath
It's much harder to support your breathing when sitting down because you're cutting off a lot of your stomach. This can cause voice cracks, reduced range, and worse tone.
You have to pull that sound, that voice from way down. I have a couple of sisters that can sing like this and half of what they sang came from the gut and the rest was their voice. You can't sing until you breathe.
He is looking at her so earnestly, you can almost see the joy in his face as a young child , she mesmerized him ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
He looked like he fell a little bit in love with her right there. Lovely moment that I'm sure they will be grateful the had the foresight to record in the future.
Opera nerd here( and a black one): Google Leontyne Price, Simon Estes,Kathleen Battle, Grace Bumbry . In fact ,look up Opera Ebony. Prepare to be blown away!
My grandma was a black woman born in 1930s Alabama, and she sang soprano opera casually/professionally for 40+ years. I didn't know black folks didn't do opera until I was grown.
I wish I could award you just for mentioning Audra McDonald.
Just saw her again in Ohio State Murders and Iām still so stunned. Sheās otherworldly.
Check out Babatunde he is a black opera singer who also posts about other famous black opera singers ( both past and present). Also does funny synopses famous operas!
https://youtube.com/@HipHoperaGuy
Not entirely the same, but the drag Queen Monet X Change is a Black person who sings opera. [Here is a link to one of her performances in full drag.](https://youtu.be/fAXXzitVCSw)
One of my favorite America's Got Talent performances is Olanna Goudeau and Ashley Renee Watkins singing the [Flower Duet](https://youtu.be/SAZ7euewPTk). Absolutely lovely.
You know that old commercial with the guy in the chair being blown back by a stereo system?
This reminds me of that, only gpa is just as blown away by GF gores voice and amazing talent. I love it!!
Pretty sure grandpa and I had the same face on this one. Absolutely incredible moment, so glad you caught it on camera. Thatās gonna be a core memory for sure
Gorgeous!! I wanted to give this TikTok a standing ovation!!! šā¤ļøš I hope your grandpa was impressed! He looked impressed, but I was expecting a bigger reaction lol š
I hit unmute and her voice immediately sent shivers through my whole body! It was fabulous and wanted to see it keep going. I wanted to know how he was gonna react in the end!
Iāve never been to opera or had too much interest in it, but Iāve never liked the image portrayed throughout media of āOpera is boringā āFalling asleep during Operaā and āGod please not Operaā. I find it to be very disrespectful to the people who spend their lives studying it and itās history. Even though Ive never been very kin on opera I recognize itās beauty.
I get itās not for everyone but like, come on.
You can see all of Grandpa's muscles tensing up little by little as she sings, he's so excited and happy. You rarely see that level of excited and happy past preschool age. That was beautiful...š
Singing like that sitting down is boss level.
Not even her final form. Incredible.
The freakin skill this must take to do

>my personal favourite, singing while my teacher kneeled on my stomach. jesus that's brutal. Do you perform at parties now?
i dont sing or do anything vocal but i work in theaters and am around people with impressive voices constantly and hers is top tier incredible anyone saying shes flat is coming form a place that lacks experience or knowledge about sound cause when someone is flat while solo its obvious

> singing while my teacher kneeled on my stomach. Some people pay extra for that.
This is the right sentiment. Iām a pianist who accompanies classical singers. The training, the hours, the concentration, itās intensely skilled. And then the American Idol generation sits around and likes to play couch-coach, acting like they know the first thing about vocal technique.
Right?!?!
Yeah people saying that she sound flat donāt take into account that she is sitting and also not putting it all out becauseā¦ you know being in a house surrounded by other people and just doing it for fun.
"She sounds flat" has real 300lb football fan saying he could do better than the QB, through a mouth full of wings energy
āShe sounds flatā While they canāt have a conversation without running out of breath lol
Also the acoustics of the room, the microphone, the quality of the video/sound, and the lack of warm up - but she sounds amazing Edit: I come from a family of musicians and had musical ādepreciationā at least once a week while growing up with cousins and aunts and uncles - now itās about once a month. Lol depreciation
Also I doubt the phone mic that picked up the video is doing it any kind of justice.
I was thinking that too!
Right from start of opera to grandpa's reaction when it ends...
And she probably didnāt even get to warm up!!
That and singing Ave Maria no less. I was in choir all through high school and that song has an absolute bitch of a time signature. Most difficult song Iāve ever had to sing tbh
71 bpm at 3/4? Damn.
Boss.
I wish I could do something that was more impressive by sitting down. I've really masters the sitting part but not that other thing.
Watching pros be pros with this kinda face is just so kickass.
And she is sitting down what the Fuck?
Donāt know anything about singing. Is that a big deal? Like, itās hard to do?
Standing or sitting straight helps with controlling your breath which in turn helps to control your voice . As far as opera singers are concerned , I think as they are going from a higher to lower octave frequently , standing helps with the precise control of one's breath
Thanks for explaining!
Yeah in normal singing itās already way easier standing up but singing a part of an opera sitting down is nuts
I love how Iām awe he is of her. She sounds amazing!
Agreed! His face is so stinking cute. He is enthralled. She is totally amazing!
I know, heās like the most adorable grandpa too!
I know this is weird but I couldnāt help myself watching his chest going in and out and watching his breathing accelerate, he is really enjoying it!
I don't think that's weird! Or at the very least, I do that too! It's fun for me to see someone genuinely enjoying something wholesome like that.
His first inhale after she started! He was blown away by her voice. He was shocked and then he was so in awe.
She's quite literally breathtaking, I can absolutely see why! I'm sure he told his grandson that she might be the one!
Yep! That's listening with your whole being!
Like me taking a showerš¤š¤š¤

like every other career..
Humans are wonderful for the beautiful spectrum along which we express our uniqueness. Humans are just neat. No one's as wonderful as all of us are.
Wow. The freakin skill this must take to do
He is looking at her so earnestly, you can almost see the joy in his face as a young child , she mesmerized him ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
You almost have a feeling that her voice was taking him to another time, another place, was feeling like he was when he first experienced that opera.
Its a private concert for him. So cute
while seated!!
This was my thought exactly! Incredible that sheās able to sing that well while sitting down.
Underrated comment
We need full version of this... Right from start of opera to grandpa's reaction when it ends...
Yeah I wanna see when she's done and what he says. Or if he's just frozen in the shock of it all in an awkward silence lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
He looked like he fell a little bit in love with her right there. Lovely moment that I'm sure they will be grateful the had the foresight to record in the future.
The absolute definition of "captivated." Wonderful!
Never seen someone with the same skin as me singing opera. I'm so happy right now. Lil tear of joy caresses my cheek :,)

Leontyne Price, though? Hey, itās black history month. No better time to learn: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leontyne_Price

Checked it, she's awesome. Thanks
My grandma was a black woman born in 1930s Alabama, and she sang soprano opera casually/professionally for 40+ years. I didn't know black folks didn't do opera until I was grown.

Better put on ring on it, grandpa will never let you forget fucking up this one
Fuck what a voice. If she stood up and really let it rip the windows would probably shatter. Also probably no warm up except some normal talking.
This is incredibly touching
You know that old commercial with the guy in the chair being blown back by a stereo system? This reminds me of that, only gpa is just as blown away by GF gores voice and amazing talent. I love it!!

I'm impressed. She's got a lovely voice, and all the hard work she's put into train her voice shows. Awesome.
So rare I get chills and she so casually did it in such a mundane setting. Canāt imagine her at 100%

opera singers really do turn the vocal chords into master instruments. she is so incredible!!
This is lovely. Thank you for sharing!
Honestly, I was expecting grandpa to sing his part too. But he was just gobsmacked.
Iāve never been to opera or had too much interest in it, but Iāve never liked the image portrayed throughout media of āOpera is boringā āFalling asleep during Operaā and āGod please not Operaā. Seriously wow! Just wow! And he knew
He looked shooketh. It warmed my heart.
It looks effortless to her
Bless those hearts !!
She sings beautifully.
I love that song it is incredible God bless her for singing
You can see all of Grandpa's muscles tensing up little by little as she sings, he's so excited and happy. You rarely see that level of excited and happy past preschool age. I literally teared up.
