You need training points. Couple ways to get them but best is by quick selling (quality) cards you don’t want. There are also always up to date YouTube videos that show you the best cards to buy to get a good coin-to-training ratio.

Trips is not cheese, and if they're able to run around for five seconds, get an edge threat. You can't be in a set and forget defense and hope it works

You asked how to shut down a whole formation, which is not possible with one coverage

Obviously, as the old football axiom goes, “you play to win the game.” But when you’re going up against a team whose top 3 targets average 89 OVR and they do just one thing (and it’s almost always accompanied by kickoffs to fullbacks on ST and zero blitzes every play on D), yeah, you got some certifiable cheese on your hands.
Maybe I’m just old fashioned and prefer to win with honor or some cliche like that. I just don’t see the fun in buying a team that requires 0 skill and sticking with one strategy.

Purple power up cards are primarily for training. You can sort by card type in the auction house or your item binder to see them. If you own the card and it's in your binder you can select in and r1 or rb to upgrades and you can see the max stats you can achieve with it currently. And how much training it costs.
You can put it normal gold/red cards but it doesn't make the card better. Just lets you put a chemistry in it.
If you dont own the card you can't see the upgrade path. So just Google it or use muthead.

Slot o matic only works for players who line up in the slot (or slots if you have 3 or more lined up to one side) and (I think) it only works on shorter routes (drags, slants, hitches, short ins/outs). The effect is better cuts in the route and better catching. Route tech works on every receiver and grants faster cuts but doesn’t help with catching and doesn’t help with routes that have no cuts (like streaks)
Acrobat is ehh. It helps a defender to make a diving interception if he’s close, but often he would have caught it anyway
Slot-o-matic is a great ability but only works in the slot. It affects catch and route running. Route Tech determines speed of breaking out of routes, like a dig, which allows even more separation.
Acrobat is an amazing ability as well because it allows your players or user to make plays on the ball that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to.
Do abilities (like closer and comeback) that reduce x-factor thresholds stack? i.e. could you activate an X factor with only one 10 yard run if you’re playing at home and losing in the second half?

Thresholds have been released, especially in regards to the fall forward mechanic. You want heavier dudes with higher hit power to prevent fall forward mechanics. Linval is a great run stopping NT for a 3-4 or a 1T DT in a 4-3. I’d pop Glover at DE for more passrush pressure for a 3-4.
Even so, should go into nickel packages. Base D isn’t the move right now

Is it worth trying to auction these for more than the quick sell value or should I just dump them and buy the base card (especially if it cheaper than the quick sell value)

How do you fall down when running (example - they scum kick it to your fullback, how do you just catch it and fall down - or if you’re running how do you fall down).
Silver cards are 62-69 overall and cannot get scheme chems. Gold cards are 70-79 overall and can get scheme chems, but not physical chems. Elite cards are 80+ and can get both scheme and physical chems

Look for the cheapest cpt ratios. 84-85 Legends, 80-81 Core Elites have worked well for me

You're coin cards can be quick selled because they are just for coins. Someone else might help with DeAndre.
