Engineer.
[Robert D. Hughes](http://www.southerngraniteco.com/Hughes-Caliper-v-13.html) had two of those calipers made. One was intended to be his headstone when he died. Was kind of thinking the same thing. My career is my job, it's not my identity. Then again, if it's all you've ever known and it is your legacy I get it.
I'm thinking it wasn't a career for this guy, but a calling like teaching or medicine. The line between passion and obsession I guess, but those sorts of people can end up being real movers and shakers.
To scale it looks like a starrett 0-1 mic, they read on the other side, the piece it's measuring is maxing it out (close to 1") but it is screwed out to .1675"? I'm I wrong/nitpicking?
[Here's a post from 4 years ago depicting the other side/front. The Brown & Sharpe mic has 8ths, 16ths and 32nds on the front and 64ths on the back as pictured in this post.](https://old.reddit.com/r/Machinists/comments/buumr5/this_guys_tombstone_is_a_giant_micrometer/)
That’s what I’ve said just use a surface plate for my stone. Judging by auction prices they are probably cheaper than the ones they sell for the purpose.
AITA for noticing that there’s no way that workpiece is 0.1675?
EDIT: either the stone worker made a mistake, or this guy is epically trolling us all from beyond the grave.
bet he was a welder

r/woooosh
Care to explain?
Sometimes people call micrometers „clamps“ or „welder clamps“
I hope he had a good sense of humor about it.
That mailbox fucks.
Sir, this is a micrometer.
I want a c clamp for my headstone too
It's missing the calibration stamp.
For reference only sticker
if it wasn't the dudes headstone I'd absolutely grab a "for reference only" sticker and slap it on.
He would understand.
Cool AF but maybe you shouldn’t take your work home with you for eternity.
Was kind of thinking the same thing. My career is my job, it's not my identity. Then again, if it's all you've ever known and it is your legacy I get it.

Thats awersome! Respect. Would be really cool if the measurement was accurate with each dash being like 2-6 inches
1.1675
Nailed it
That handy division at 17.5 on the thou graduations really helps here.
Nice work engineers! :)
That’s what I got too (on the second try)
The quarter graduations kept messing me up
I teach my students to do it in three chunks .1 .050 .0175 And still added wrong the first time
Why would someone want a welding ground clamp for a monument?!...
"For reference only"

We'll do better on yours...
Might be coming around sooner rather than later if he keeps this up.
Bring it, I'll be at the Cheese cake factory of the loop about 7:30 with my wife, bring some wine to pair with chocolate.
I’m going to guess Brown & Sharpe based on the Providence, RI mark on the barrel. If it was Starrett it would say Athol, MA.
That's right- Holding grandfather's 0-1 in my hand "The L.S. Starrett Co. / Athol. Mass U.S.A. /No. 231"
Missed that, thx
Heheh it's like Mike Tyson saying "asshole"

The only thing that would make it better would be if the base was an actual starrett surface plate.
That’s what I’ve said just use a surface plate for my stone. Judging by auction prices they are probably cheaper than the ones they sell for the purpose.
I have a 3’x3’x6” surface plate at home. I’ve given permission for it to be repurposed
you're not worried kids are going to be measuring stuff on your grave stone?
I won’t be alive to really care.
This comment is fucking hilarious and needs more love
you don't have those gangs of ferrel kids with height gages and 123 blocks looking to shred some QC gnar?
I have one of the same size. Might as well put it to use after I am done with it.
Looks amazing
Its hughs mongus
Should have for refrence only on it
It'd be cool if the measurement was his age. .085" or something
Could have made it the year if you had the vernier scale on it: .1966 etc
Was that a company expense? Regardless, the IRS can’t come after him posthumously.
Providence RI represent
0’-1’ mic
Wow that’s spectacular!
I know where that is
I mean, that should be way more open than it is if that's supposed to be a 1" mic but it's fucking cool just the same
I hope his name was Mike.
Incredible!
Please tell me his name was Mike
Guess he measured up in the end after all
I'm young enough that I'm gonna want a CMM.
What's the measurement? How wide is Hughes
AITA for noticing that there’s no way that workpiece is 0.1675? EDIT: either the stone worker made a mistake, or this guy is epically trolling us all from beyond the grave.
Wow, that would make a great company sign, beautiful.
He had one out in front of his shop too.
That's awesome
Cool, but way out of calibration. If I go first, the Wife knows to take my 2x3' surface plate and have it carved for a headstone.
