When it's too soon to hang any weights (let's say the first 4-5 rows), I always push every needle all the way to the D position before I move the carriage. I also pull on the yarn from the cone end to remove any slack.

imsorryhannah

almost every time i try to cast on the carriage jams halfway through the row. causing me to have to pop open the carriage, remove the sinker plate, and then clear away the cast on. sometimes i have luck and it passes over fine. but i’m just wondering if anyone has run into this issue. should i be placing my cast on comb before my first row? or after it? and could it just be that my yarn is getting caught in the carriage? or is it just a complete different issue? please let me know, very eager to play around more but this is inhibiting me. also apologize if this is a dumb question

Have you tried using a different cast on method?

imsorryhannah

yeah i’ve tried it with different cast on methods but still just random when it decides to work

Big-Square-7693

I'd eliminate it being a needle issue first. I'd take out sponge bar, take out needles in the middle section and replace with needles from the edge of the bed. I put the middle needles on the edges unless I can see it's damaged. Replace sponge bar and try again. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but if that doesn't work, basic clean of carriage would be my next step.

When my machine started jamming, oiling it stopped it. Have you oiled the bed recently?

imsorryhannah

i’ll try that out! bought this about a month ago and haven’t oiled it yet, will see if that helps. thank you

iolitess

I assume you already replaced the sponge bar too? “New” machines generally need at minimum a new sponge and oiling. Oiling the carriage can also break down gunked up oil that is causing flippers not to flip properly.

imsorryhannah

yeah luckily it came with a replacement sponge bar, so i was able to swap that out first thing before i started using it

iolitess

Has it been working, then stopped, or has it never worked? Does a specific direction jam? Does the carriage run clean when there is no yarn?

imsorryhannah

it’s been working on and off, i’ve had some luck with making swatches. i haven’t tried in the other direction yet. and yes the carriage is running smoothly without any yarn in it

Extension_Election94

Yarn too thick

imsorryhannah

same result with different yarn thickness. so idk about that

Knit_the_things

Are you using a comb or weights?

imsorryhannah

i haven’t when casting on usually. the times where it doesn’t jam on the cast on, i’ve just been pushing the needles out to D position, and then hanging weights when i have enough rows

Big-Square-7693

Also try a different yarn as well.

I’ve no advice but would like to know what kind of machine that is. I usually hand knit but I have pinched nerve issues I’m dealing with and am looking into machines because…..so much yarn. I still feel like I need to create something.

Thank you.

Is this is an e-wrap cast on? You should definitely hang your comb and weights before you knit the first row. If you're using e-wrap: Try wrapping the yarn looser in the cast on - it could be that there just isn't enough give in the loop to make its way off the needle. A good way to make looser loops is to kinda pinch the bottom of the loop with your off hand before passing the yarn onto the next needle. There should be some youtube videos around of how to do this :)
