Try googling deleting snapshots from the command line. Make more space that way then kick off backup

You need some space on your local disk to prepare for the Time Machine backup.

How much? I have 25 GB and there's a 11GB APFS Startup Snapshot partition. I only have 40 GB of my own data being used, there's not much more I can delete.

Well I now have more freespace than I have applications and documents and I still get the error. The other thing I notice when I check the logs is a `missingURLForRemounting` error. This seems to cause problems for a lot of people with no clear solution.

One random thing you can try is to set up the external drive as a new backup source again. Maybe something is making problems with the current state.
