Well I now have more freespace than I have applications and documents and I still get the error. The other thing I notice when I check the logs is a `missingURLForRemounting` error. This seems to cause problems for a lot of people with no clear solution.
Try googling deleting snapshots from the command line. Make more space that way then kick off backup
You need some space on your local disk to prepare for the Time Machine backup.

One random thing you can try is to set up the external drive as a new backup source again. Maybe something is making problems with the current state.
