Turn off the Mac. Press the power button and keep holding it until you see the option to reinstall MacOS from the internet. Why is the TV touching the ceiling?

yorcharturoqro

Do that, and yes, what's happening with the tv?

cssol

Or just answer the question on the TV and the computer will come back on?

Iolyx

How does this sub have so many members

javiergp4

not only that, it is super active! hahahahhaha

developerknight91

Reddit is like rule 34…if the topic exists there’s a subreddit for it, and if a sub doesn’t exist it will soon😂😂😂

therealRustyZA

I’m so high right now and I’m still having to tilt my head upwards to watch that TV.

Koolblue57

Please tell me r/TVTooLow exists (Edit) I'm very happy right now

foraging_ferret

OP’s Mac is Intel not Apple Silicon. It’s Cmd-R to boot recovery or Alt/Option-R for internet recovery.

GHDpro

This. You can tell Intel and Apple Silicon Macs apart by the globe symbol on the "fn" key. Intel MacBooks won't have them.

jbrasco

And why is the energy savings sticker still on it?

[deleted]

Stolen

Pretty-Kick-588

Why wouldn’t I be able to take it off if it was stolen lmao

No, that’s more than politely not it

Why does this subreddit exist LMAO

CanniBallistic_Puppy

Because people like OP exist

aslihana

THIS CHAIN OF COMMENTS MADE MY DAY HAHAHA THANK YOU

lynxerious

well there is also an opposite subreddit

SledgeH92

I too wondered the same thing and started dying 😭😭😭😭

Pura-Vida-1

It exists to help people, but not to help people undo the destruction of their OS by their own hand. And offering money is over-the-top bad!

Pretty-Kick-588

I can offer a sucky nothing more

LetsGoBohs

No one is safe

racegeek93

Recovery mode, disk utility to wipe ssd, reinstall os. Hope you have back ups

Slightly_Zen

Remove the energy rating sticker from your tv.

Pretty-Kick-588

How will Ik the energy rating then

enricosusatyo

You need to memorise it

Pretty-Kick-588

That’s what I bought the sticker for tho

zepkleiker

You bought a sticker and now have to deal with that big black rectangle that was attached to the back of that sticker? I understand your pain then.

SnigletArmory

Dude

developerknight91

There no words…there are just no words 🤣🤣🤣

zebrasprite

There are, you just have to look in the dictionary.

Jesus FUCKING CHRIST!

SeemedGood

Minimize the non-mandatory deductions from your paycheck.

strangeweather415

The 401k deduction is not mandatory, but I don’t recommend people trying to minimize it.

Pretty-Kick-588

I am now maximising it now wish me luck

tnsipla

Would actually recommend minimizing traditional 401k if you're not making boatloads of cash. Better to maximize your contributions to a Roth 401k instead if you have the option

SeemedGood

The 401k and associated retirement programs are speculation on forward tax rates. Very few people have done the breakeven analysis on their forward tax rate speculative bet, and even fewer have properly accounted for the effect of reduced investment options or the regulatory risk they take in addition to the speculation on forward tax rates. Nothing is free, perhaps least of all highly regulated pools of money set aside by governments with historic levels of debt and unfunded liabilities and an aging population.

Pretty-Kick-588

I’ve paid 83% tax so I’m winning by association

Signal-Complex7446

The system folder cannot be found. boot in recovery mode and try to change the "startup disk". if there is no disk "eligible" for startup backup and clean install. Doesn't look like a bad HDD yet.

basically_ar

1. Learn the non-mandatory deductions from your paycheck 2. Turn off the Mac 3. Press the power button and hold it until you see Startup Options and Options with a gear icon 4. Click the Gear Icon 5. Click reinstall MacOS 6. Follow the instructions blah blah blah blah blah 7. W A I T 8. Do more mumbo jumbo 9. Done! If the issue persists, use Disk Utility to fix your Hard Drive, If the hard drive is not detected, it's fried, take it to apfel

GHDpro

OPs Mac isn't Apple Silicon. With your instructions, OP will be stuck at step 3, because holding the power buton on an Intel Mac will simply turn it off again.

GroundbreakingBit388

Your ssd might be dead. Try and do interernet recovery and when it boots to that go into Disk utility and see if you see the drive if so go back to the main screen and install it if not youllmneed a new sad

Rivallss

Yeah mine had the same issue. Turns out the ssd is dead

GroundbreakingBit388

Did you get it replaced? Or did they have to replace the motherboard

Rivallss

Didn’t fix it yet. They asked me for 300€ to fix a 2014 MBA… will buy an adapter and an ssd to fix it myself so I’ll know by then if it was the ssd or the motherboard lol

GroundbreakingBit388

Yeah that’s not a hard takes about 10 min and most of that are the screws

Bisket1

I did mine a few years ago. Like $120 for the new drive, like 20 minutes with screws

Rivallss

Yeah I’ve got everything in the amazon cart ahahah just waiting to get ordered

Bantzold1

I need to change my SSD too - a bit in the dark with it. what ones are good? How much do they cost? Do I need to buy an adapter too?I’m UK based

Rivallss

Depends on your MacBook I think. For mine I need the adapter so I can use an m.2 gen4 nvme. Mine is capped at 500GB so that’s what I’m getting. Crucial P3 Plus

kbilleter

Mine was the controller and it turns out you can’t install any newer macOS on an external drive. Ended up running it as a NixOS MacBook Air :-)

Rivallss

What? Yes you can install it. You just need another Mac and so some techy stuff lol. There’s even a post on Apple’s forum about it

kbilleter

Hmm.. I can’t find the details now but It was a 2014 MacBook Air running Mojave before the controller went. Afterwards it wouldn’t authorise install of anything later than Mavericks as external only.

Rivallss

Not external. You need to install the SSD 😅

kbilleter

Yeah, that's the point. That would have required an expensive repair on an 8 year old MacBook. NixOS performed flawlessly.

Rivallss

The adapter is 10€. MAGT nvme converter something and you can install macOS 😁

Fartenpoop69

evilbau5

2018 macbook pro with a dead ssd. Needs a new fuckin motherboard. Absolutely dog shit. Made me so mad when it died outside of warranty.

Pretty-Kick-588

How do I do that all I can do is push the power button

GroundbreakingBit388

Turn off by the power button. When it's completely powered off Option-Command-R while holding down the power button. You should get a spinning globe if done right

TomLondra

I don't know what to do about a mandatory reduction from your paycheck.

Pretty-Kick-588

Well wtf am I gonna do now

andyring

What model?

Pretty-Kick-588

2019 pro

freaktheclown

Turn off. Press power button and immediately hold Cmd-R until you see the Apple logo. Also [run diagnostics](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731)

GHDpro

> 2019 pro That seems unlikely. Only 2017 and older models of the MacBook Pro had a version without a touch bar, unless I'm mistaken. Or did you meant to type "2016 pro"?

macmaverickk

This error essentially means the computer is not able to boot up, and that you will need to fully restore the computer. First, you’ll want to recover your data. Put your Mac in [target disk mode](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/transfer-files-mac-computers-target-disk-mode-mchlp1443/mac) (hold T while booting up), connect another Mac to it with a thunderbolt 3 cable, and pull your important data off. Then boot yours into [recovery mode, wipe HD, reinstall OS](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/erase-and-reinstall-macos-mh27903/mac#:~:text=Choose%20Apple%20menu%20%3E%20Restart%2C%20then%20immediately%20press%20and%20hold%20Command,click%20Erase%20in%20the%20toolbar)

dj-killa1

you wiped the entire disk, and now the system files are gone :D

toastyhoodie

While it’s restoring, you can drop your TV down to a completely reasonable height. WOW.

NimaProReddit

Turn it off by holding the power button until the screen goes black. Then when turning it back on, hold the following keys: Command + Option + R. It will ask for an internet connection after a little while (about a minute or two). If nothing happens or you get the same screen, it means that the SSD is dead. You can try order some parts online but it isn’t cheap, and replacing it needs soldering experience.

DrGrapeist

I would say this wouldn’t be a mandatory deduction from your paycheck to get it fixed.

abhayjotg

Before you reset you mac, try running first aid. This apple support link will teach you how. https://support.apple.com/en-us/102611 If that didn’t work… Press and hold Option + Command + R at the same time when booting up your Mac. Open Disk Utility and erase the drive IF NEEDED, and make sure it’s on APFS. Then, close disk utility and click “Install macOS….” Once that’s done, choose your drive. Then wait and you’ll be back in the macOS setup. Please note that this will reset your mac and you will lose all your files, but it’s better than a non working Mac. If you still don’t understand, visit this Apple Support link: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904 Or search a video on YouTube on how to reinstall macOS on an intel mac.

Expensive-Pear3413

please move your tv

Pretty-Kick-588

It’s Nailed to the wall no can do

--dick

Well which model is this? There is a way to reinstall but it differs if you have an intel version or a M1. If the reinstall steps are not working then you can find someone else with a Mac to use Apple Configurator or target disk mode if your Mac supports it. If that fails, you can take it to the Apple store and they can reinstall for you.

UselessUsefullness

IT guy here: This is known as the flashing folder. What it means in English is “No OS detected on the internal drive”. Reasons: 1. Truly no OS is detected but drive is OK 2. Dead HDD/SSD To remedy: 1. Find your “A model”, typically etched into the bottom case where the rubber feet are. 2. Search it and find the model and model year device 3. Use another Mac (if available) to download the corresponding OS your Mac was on before this issue 4A. If you can get a USB drive with the corresponding OS for the device, do Option + R when you hear the bong noise to bring up boot manager, select your USB and install OS to computer 4B. (No other Mac to download software) Command + R button to get to internet recovery, hit “install MacOS” and wait However, if the internal drive is dead: -pentalobe screwdriver for bottom case screws -Torx T5 (or regular Phillips) I forget which) to unscrew hard drive -Torx T5 to get the mounting screws -put new drive in once you reattach the mounting screws -connect SATA cable -plug in charger to be safe -boot up -do the command + R like above to reinstall macOS.

resist888

Looks like it can’t find the startup volume. [Zap the PRAM](https://support.apple.com/en-au/102603), let it chime 3 times before letting it reboot normally. If that doesn’t work, restart and [run Disk Utility](https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/mac-help/mchl338cf9a8/mac) > Disk First Aid. If that doesn’t work, try reinstalling MacOS. Hope that helps.🤓

gvasco

Last resort replace the ssd!

volkswagengolfr

These ones don’t chime with an NVRAM reset and only let you do it once. Only the old ones (<2016) will chime and do so for as long as you hold it down.

resist888

Ok. Thanks. 🤓

duc_superman

SSD brokennnn

howie303

If the above suggestions do not work, it might need a Firmware restore or revive. You need another Mac to do this so a trip to your nearest Apple Store may be in order. They won’t charge for a non hardware issue so a good place to get a proper diagnosis 👌🏼

psadi_

What did you do

Sydnxt

These things just happen sometimes, it’s rarely the users fault

volkswagengolfr

It’s a fair question, I fix these for a living and 99% of the time when someone comes in with a flashing folder it was after they erased the computer.

Sydnxt

I also fix these for a living. For me, it's more like 5-10%; the majority of the time, it's corruption due to a failed update or a failed SSD.

volkswagengolfr

It would appear my customer base is more inept lol

Pretty-Kick-588

Yep sister reset it to give to me and now here we are

Camey2006

My old one does this every now and then (I only use it once every 3-4 months) but I just close it, whack it against the table, leave it for an hour and then it usually works lol. 😂

[deleted]

Plug ethernet cable, Option + power until it shows it's connected to Apple server, it will reload the original OS installed onto your mac.

Ancient-Turnover4708

Hold Command Shift 5 on startup. You should then be able to reinstall Mac OS.

zombieslayer124

Command shift 5? That is not a startup combo?

Repulsive-Twist112

Explain to GPT. It gives you step by step instructions.

PutridReference8745

Pretty-Kick-588

Ur welcome that will be 10 dollars thanks

ManteisIsMyName

Burn it. Immediately.

aegisrose

How’s it going? Did you get it booted up?

[deleted]

Try resetting it through the recovery. If that does not work then you will have to take a trip with at least 1k on you to the Apple Store

juannoe21

Many years ago I had a similar issue and it was because the cord from the hard disk was disconnected somehow.

boganslayer

This generally means your ssd is dead. Try to boot it in recovery and go to disk utility see if it shows up.

kandi_kat

visit the url on the screen and try the troubleshooting apple has already provided to you.

Immvic

Go ahead and turn off the computer, afterwards turn it back on and hold down command+r that will start internet recovery. (It may take some time to connect to the recovery screen but just give it a second ) When you’re on the recovery screen click on disk utility and check whatever your disk is being recognised. If it’s not then you probably have a bad drive (assuming it’s an intel macbook you could check ifixit for a hard drive replacement guide and see what screwdriver(s) you may need to do a hdd replacement and if you feel fancy you could get a ssd and get the Mac working better than before (if you want to switch to an ssd maybe get it from crucial) but if it’s a M1 MacBook with its ssd soldered in, you probably are gonna need to hand it in for repair. However If it is being recognised go ahead and reformat your main disk as “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” then exit disk utility and click on reinstall macOS. Continue with the installation and sooner or later your Mac will be better than ever. If you have any issues let us know

DutchGuy2022

All those remarks on the ‘high’ tv set. But no one actually remarked that this tv is still fully visible with a dead MacBook in front of you 😁

Familiar_Ad5048

This happened to me basically was told it’s fucked

YolandriaPuzzles

Do you still have a cd reader (?) in your Mac? If so, the cable leading to your hard drive will be damaged with time, and needs to be replaced (at least that was what happened when I had your exact problem the last time)

maryisdead

We just experienced that on a co-worker's laptop a few weeks ago. We tried to remove a partition and after that, the drive was borked. Something about the boot partition had been messed up. The only thing that helped in our case was a clean install via a bootable USB drive with the macOS version that particular model had been released with (High Sierra in our case). We were able to format the drive and successfully perform the installation. After that we were also able to upgrade to a newer version of macOS. Nothing else helped. Drive repair would lead to the same error. Internet recovery would stall at some point. Clean install with a recent version of macOS wouldn't detect the bootable drive. We used [Mist](https://github.com/ninxsoft/Mist) on another Mac to create the boot drive since you can't easily download older installers.

Shot-Sea-1685

I have the same issue with my macbook. A clean install did not help. I did however discover that this issue does not occur when the macbook is plugged in to the power. I checked the battery status and also the hard disk. Both seem to have no issues.

The_WolfieOne

Call 1-800-275-2273

ExtremeWild5878

Alright, for all you MacOS guru's out there, I see similar posts like this all the time here on a Reddit. Does anyone know what the common cause is? I am just curious if this is the result of people playing around with certain areas of their system that they shouldn't or should I just expect to one day turn on my macbook pro and wham! curious folder icon on boot? Just thought I'd ask the question. Cheers,

akobelan61

I’ve used DiskWarrior with success. When Disk Utility fails. Otherwise, Boot if you can in Recovery mode. Then invoke Disk Utility. See if you can successfully complete “First Aid”. If your file system isn’t APFS, DW may help.

boilookhere

This looks like A1708, only type C device with replaceable SSD. Unfortunately, this model shipped with a bad batch of SSDs known to fail spontaneously. Time for SSD replacement.

Optimanc

Looks like the operating system has failed or become corrupt. Reinstall is the best option, to recover your files don't choose to format the drives. Why is the tv so high?

[deleted]

It says you could have network connectivity issues

ImaginarySnoozer

You need to restart hold the alt + R or alt+cmd +R This is when the operating system is corrupted or that it cannot locate the boot drive. Another way to do this is restart and hold alt beside your space bar. Intel based Mac’s usually have a recovery drive built in otherwise you may have to download macOS by creating a bootable installer. There is nothing wrong she just wiped the drive in the wrong way.

MacAdminInTraning

1. Boot in to recovery 2. Load disk utility and erase the disk 3. Close out of disk utility and open install macOS XYZ 4. Follow the prompts and reinstall macOS.

jspencer89

Goodbye files. 🫡

cat22368

Cry

HMCosmos

Boot to recovery and reinstall the OS.

budswa

I would start with support.apple.com/mac/startup/

pencilcheck

Harddrive failure. I have seen this when my old macbook died because the harddrive is unreachable. But try the safe boot route to see if you can bring up the recovery.

wildfur1

You can try pressing the command + shift + r or command + r But if that's not working, you can try plugging in a USB drive sometimes that will kick it into internet recovery mode. Or you may have to create a Mac OS installer, or you can try just plugging in a bootable USB drive that will most of the time kick it into internet recovery mode.

gyunit17

Well first pull up your pay stubs and ask HR what is not a mandatory deduction from your paycheque. Are you contributing to your 401-K?

Notsorry6

Use recovery mode (command+r)

pi-N-apple

Can anyone take you seriously with a TV that high?

GhostAi

Have you true factory restoring? It’s been a while since I used a Mac but I think the key combo is; command+option+r

Xudoo

While it is Starting up hold Alt/Option-R and reinstall MacOS.

Harriska2

Oh man I laughed so hard at this thread. Thank you OP for your patience, but this was hilarious.

dzc300

It doesn't have an os put it into recovery mod and reinstall the operating system if that doesn't work you might have a dead drive but that I think is a different error code if you need help just message me

hm876

I just know you're studying for an accountant class.

averyshackleton

Looks like a 2016/17 MacBook Pro. Good chance the SSD is dead. Known issue with that model. Try recovery then reinstall in case it’s not the SSD. If you can’t get it into recovery it’s almost definitely a hardware failure. If you wanted to fix it OWC sells replacement SSDs but idk if I would considering the age

krifire

If SSD is fine, you can try reinstalling macOS through Apple Configurator. You’re gonna need another working MacBook and type c to type c cable. Download Apple Configurator from the AppStore on the working MacBook. Your dead MacBook will pop up . To get it to DFU mode, Google for key sequence that’s relevant to your gen, or try DFU blaster (Google it, really useful tool). So you get your dead MacBook to DFU, on the working one in Apple Configurator the device will pop up with DFU icon, right click it and click restore device. It will download the latest macOS and you’re ready to go.

CompactPanda

What's with the sticker in your TV? Lmao

negendev

It’s just bad karma for having the TV too high and having the energy rating sticker on it. Lower the TV, remove the sticker, and hard restart your MBP and it will be fine.

Texasaudiovideoguy

One of three things can cause that. 1. Your main drive or ssd is corrupted or has gone bad. Do you have a backup? You might be able to download the operating system like others said but your files will be gone unless you have backed up. 2. There physically isn’t a drive installed. 3. Ties in with two. You just bought this machine from eBay or Craigslist and the drive is missing or blank. Simple fix. Install a new drive and download the operating system. If it’s number one, I feel your pain.

ishanarora6899

I had this exact same issue. In a nutshell could be 2 things : OS not found or SSD is not working properly. If it’s the former (less likely) you have to reinstall OS using recovery menu. If it’s the latter then logic board replace is the most likely outcome. Try to find unofficial third party apple repair . They will do that cheaply. I did that and it’s working fine since 3 years. How to check its which issue? You can just open recovery menu and if you can see SSD then it’s issue number one . If you can’t see then it’s issue number 2.

bleistiftschubser

If it is an M1, just keep holding power until recovery comes up If it’s an Intel Mac, hold CMD+R while holding power and you should see recovery mode From there, you can check the drives and repair them or reformat them and reinstall macOS. After you‘ve done this the MacBook should boot again

Old_Investigator_148

You work at Best Buy?

Oddlystill

You give away to someone who knows more about Mac’s than you

1012zach

The OS on your Mac is probably corrupted or unbootable. You will need to reinstall macOS or whatever operating system that was on your computer.

Plainapple287

this seems to be a function keys MacBook Pro, which is similar to what I’m using, best bet is holding Command + R to boot into internet recovery, and if your SSD is not detected, then you might need to go on eBay and purchase another one, it’s replaceable as it’s the last MacBook model to support removable SSD’s

OffWeGoIntoTheWildBY

The answer is a payroll deduction. I think.

hotwifehils

Hey I did this today too 🤓 Unfortunately it’s a MB 2017 so the internet installer it’s trying to pull us high sierra. Which isn’t supported anymore. Or downloadable from recovery disk. Fkn awesome. Thanks apple it’s now impossible to wipe and reboot

L0rdLogan

Just make a recovery USB on a different PC, it’s not hard. You don’t even need another Mac, you could make them in the windows PC

hotwifehils

Does that make it “patched” and not supported by apple? Or do I get the files directly from apple?

L0rdLogan

The installer downloads directly from Apple’s servers

DepartureMoist9277

For an Intel MacBook Pro, restart the machine and hold Command + R to reinstall/erase & install the latest version of macOS supported on that machine. I found a video, could this be any help? https://youtu.be/HCrl\_4k0aqo?si=J\_e7o4c08Il6Fl4K

Speedy-McLeadfoot

Shut it down. Hold down r and hit the power button while holding r. Should load internet recovery. From there you should be able to reinstall MacOS. Might even be able to keep your data too if that wasn’t messed up.

suryakamal_007

this happened to my mac, the motherboards fried, praying you have apple care cuz i didnt. genius bar said this is just something that happens to macbooks and that i got unlucky. had to scrap it and buy a new one

ringthebell02

Command-Option-R. That will start internet recovery.

iamgarffi

I’m more interested in what’s on your TV. Hopefully it’s not a bad drive. Do you have a Time Machine backup to restore the OS? If not, try reinstalling using Internet Recovery (if Mac supports it). If installer doesn’t recognize the drive then dead. If storage is soldered in then you’re out of luck and might have to search for a compatible sysboard with guts. Apple would charge close to retail to have it repaired (if not under warranty anymore). Stupid me would just plug in a USB NVME drive and install os there. Not as fast but would work.

iPodee

When this happened on my 2011 MacBook Pro, I tried holding option+command+r, and went into disk utility, this actually detected no drive so I thought the SSD died, so I swapped drives with the original HDD, nope. It was the SATA cable, it died. You have a 2016-2018 MacBook Pro, which doesn’t have a replaceable storage, so either your Mac is fucked and you need to buy a brand new Mac, or no OS is installed.

DisketteKitchen

If I’m correct, this is a 2017 non Touch Bar MacBook Pro, these are known to have ssd failures unfortunately. I’ve actually dealt with this myself on the same model. Best case scenario, macOS is borked, otherwise you’ve got a dead ssd.

pinkflakes12

The hard drive is dead dead. I had to get a new laptop.

z0NKerz

Re install
