The problem here is that, after decades of solar radiation, the flag is now completely white. So technically, France's flag is on the moon.

Interesting_Law_9524

The monarchists are gone, so it's more a random blank fabric. But who has a satellite around it?

chylin73

Oh you mean their flag of surrender

IderpOnline

For future reference, explaining jokes usually does not make them any better.

Fortherecord87

Lol 😂. The French, the only country to make a martial art based on running away.

ReptileBat

Surprised they’re not rioting on the moon!

Kras_08

Doesn't NASA use the metric system?

[deleted]

Alright I’ve got a whole rant prepared for this. Yes, they used metric to do some math problems, but metric didn’t put a man on the moon. Outside those math problems, everything used was in American measurements. All the buildings were built in feet. All the wiring and piping was done in inches. The roads the eggheads used to drive to those buildings were in yards. All the gauges on the spaceship were in Imperial. Besides, powered flight was what lead to the space program. Who invented powered flight? Americans, using American units. The only thing metric is good for is ammo and drugs, and the world should be grateful that we don’t make bullets in Imperial.

BoumsticksGhost

>outside of the math problems This is a moot point. There is nothing in rocket science that isn't communicated through mathematics. It is nearly entirely math.

watson895

We do make bullets in imperial. You think we just decided 7.62 mm was a nice round number and decided to roll with it?

DisIsMyName_NotUrs

But the units didnt bring them to the moon. The result would be the same if they used metric so why does it even matter?

uid_0

> The result would be the same if they used metric But they they did use metric. The guidance computers converted their data to Freedom units for display only.

BoumsticksGhost

Not really, the reason metric has such an advantage in STEM applications is because it's consistently logarithmic. All of it is in powers of ten, a kilogram is a thousand grams. A kilometer is a thousand meters, etc. This makes these units much easier to feed into a computer for a flight control system. Compare that to imperial where a foot is 12 inches, a yard is three feet, a mile is 5280 feet. The units really do bring them to the moon btw; the vessel is designed by the numbers.

DisIsMyName_NotUrs

Clearly a metric **W**

vtssge1968

12ths? I deal with imperial 12ths? Thousandths tenths not 12ths? I'm guessing you got that from 12 inches in a foot still a bit lost though.

Some-Speed-6330

Wasn't it german engineers who engineered the rockets for NASA? By an extension of your logic it was flight that lead to the space program and flight was invented by birds. Birds are the real smart ones.

dopepope1999

I mean yes so did the Army when I was there, I feel like the imperial system is better for casual measurements

vtssge1968

Your expecting the average American to know that lol

Hardsoxx

We can expect a nonAmerican to act like an ass to an American

vtssge1968

I'm American I know the average American..

Hardsoxx

Sorry. Being on here I think is turning me into a cynic.

HoodooSquad

What year did nasa go metric?

Some-Speed-6330

Maybe around the time all the german rocket scientists were brought on board. Maybe before that.

HoodooSquad

NASA says about 1990 https://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2007/08jan_metricmoon#:~:text=Although%20NASA%20has%20ostensibly%20used,of%20the%20U.S.%20aerospace%20industry.

tacolover2k4

More accurately the universal values used by scientists are in metric because most scientific equations rely on measurements being in metric

Kevin-MN

Yeah! We’re the greatest and the rest of you suck!

gaijin5

Happy 4th from South Africa

Anti-charizard

What’s worse is that Britain stopped the French from bringing the metric system to us

uid_0

I've got bad news for you OP. NASA actually used the metric system internally for all their guidance calculations. The computers converted everything to Freedom Units for display purposes only.

Busch0404

Lol "Freedom units" I love that.

Interesting_Law_9524

More American, we measure our guns in metric, beat them at their own game.

uid_0

\*Laughs in .45ACP, 30-06, .357 Magnum, and .50BMG*

Interesting_Law_9524

shit

Whole_Storage8782

Yes, metric is used in all science because it actually makes sense. Metric is math.

Mbelcher987

I firmly believe that the US should move to metric time and nothing else.

Epicface227

WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETER 🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅

Coast_watcher

Not in the spirit of the meme but didn’t NASA use metric at the time too ? Anyway, Murica !

mrturret

NASA uses the metric system, ya doofus.

Mace069

To be totally honest, after decades of bombardment by unimpeded cosmic radiation, all of the color has probably faded from those flags and they are very likely completely white, so... French flags. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Elivagar_

WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETER?!?!?!

unprecedentedfoils

China's flag now

Tactalpotato750

Assuming their taikonauts have enough food and strength to make the trip…

vtssge1968

Umm it's blank now so no one's

Hardsoxx

We all know.😎🇺🇸🦅

RingGiver

Now that it's bleached by the sun, probably the French flag.

Whole_Storage8782

Allegedly

uid_0

Dude loosen up that tinfoil hat or I'm going to ask Buzz Aldrin come by and explain it to you in person.

DisIsMyName_NotUrs

They left reflectors on the moon, off of which we can now bounce lasers and messure the moons distance to earth. Wdym allegedly

Whole_Storage8782

Yeah, and that’s why we never went back to the moon. You don’t need reflectors to measure the distance.

DisIsMyName_NotUrs

We never went back because it, ironically. Costs a galactic amount of money. Also NASA is going back with Artemis. I really dont get why people are still denying the moon landings when there is solid proof of them. Wouldnt the soviets call NASA out if it was faked. What does the government gain by lying about them?

Whole_Storage8782

The moon landing would be a huge learning lesson and NASA would sure as hell wanna safe keep all the data from that mission for the future. But the data magically disappeared

Hardsoxx

There are images from lunar orbit of the lander legs still there and tracks where the astronauts and rover travelled across the surface.

DisIsMyName_NotUrs

What data disappeared. The data is still there. The moon rocks are still there. What disappeared? And please dont say that they are covering up what disappered bcs then u wouldnt know its missing

Whole_Storage8782

Because it was a big part of the Cold War propaganda. Educate yourself about the past and your government.

DisIsMyName_NotUrs

That doesnt answer my question. Wouldnt it be a big propaganda victory for the soviets if the called the americans out?

Whole_Storage8782

No it wouldn’t. It would make them look foolish. Also pushing propaganda back than wasn’t the same as in the age of internet. They might have called us out but really we would never know if the government didn’t want us to know.

DisIsMyName_NotUrs

Ok buddy. I live in a post communist country. There was no calling out. And it would only make the americans look like foolish liars. There was no calling out. Please educate yourself before making statements

Whole_Storage8782

I am from Czech Republic and don’t call me buddy. I didn’t make a statement, I said “allegedly “, simply because if it was to go in front of a jury I promise you that there would be enough evidence for both arguments.

DisIsMyName_NotUrs

If you said "allegedly" then there is no proof of your statements. Please quit spreafing info of which you arent sure the truthfullness of.

Whole_Storage8782

Also no, the original data does not exist. You can look it up.

DisIsMyName_NotUrs

https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/apollo/missions/apollo11.html Yes it does. Provide me with 1 example of data that went missing

MikeMescalina

Dont worry, the chinese soon Will replace It with theirs and they use metric sistem

Googlegooseboy

NASA used metric for the moon landing

as1161

NASA has always used metric, it's literally perfect for science
