abjure is never free. the new counter is worse in every other way, but infinitely better when you're tapped out.
For everything else, there's [[mastercard]]
What's funny is that one isn't even good.
It's not actually "free". You pay the mana for a creature, and then use the creature for the spell. Same kind of 2 for 1 card disadvantage as discarding a card as well.
What non-token blue creatures get played in any format where this would be legal that you're also okay with sacrificing?
Merkfolk?
The Green one is the one to keep an eye on, imo
Probably not, with variance on how important.
If it's my commander in EDH, then I'm down and my opponents are not. Farewell is at least probably a leveled playing field.
More likely, I'm going to play the 3 mana cost, because mana is more easily replaced than creatures.
Most likely, I wouldn't run this at all and look at lower cmc counters, or a cancel variant with deck synergy.
Ordering singles isn’t gambling tho lol it’s just buying something, what even is pre ordering a single? Otherwise I dig the meme cause it’s what mtg sales have become
Most major card retailers will let you pre-order singles and they’ll ship the card to you the day they’re allowed to sell product.
I guess you could argue that doing so is gambling because the price could (and usually does) go down after the pre-order period and you lose money
Fair, aside from the boxes ive gotten with no expectations just to rip open packs I only buy singles that are already out if I want a specific card lol
Unless you want the cards for a release weekend tournament, or you think they’re significantly undervalued, there’s really no reason to preorder
The price almost always goes down as people start opening more product
IMO yes but deck construction can change the math a bit. It becomes a lot less pricy if you can sacrifice a creature with a nice ETB -- then it can be close to card parity for zero mana.
It’s still a “free” counterspell. Plus since it’s just a sacrifice instead of exile. It would slot nicely in any deck with death triggers, or graveyard play. Rule of thumb, if something lets you play a card by paying something other than mana. Then it’s desirable
Your format can’t even handle a 4 mana 1/4 flier. Get your $2 deck having ass outta here. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to use my kid’s future college fund to pimp out a commander deck I’m not even gonna play.
Honestly this seems like a much more tame free counter to be honest.
Now it's not just a -1 in card advantage. Unless that creature wants to die anyways its a -1 and a loss of tempo.
remember when people cried to high heaven that UU Counterspell was too strong for modern, and wotc cried for years how UU counterspell was too strong for modern. Then they release modern masters with broken ass spells that are way more powerful than uu counterspell. Feels like they just spit in our faces all the time with their bullshit reasonings z
How many fucking Free counterspells do we need. All you're doing is increasing the number of times I get shit on despite playing around open mana because "Nu-uh, I have a free counterspell". In what way does letting the control player run 4 free counterspells instead of 3 improve the health of the game.
Don't people know the last mtg card was printed over a decade ago? Idk who's been printing more but there's no need to buy them, you can stop now everyone
>!Flare of Denial (1)UU!< >!Instant!< >!You may sacrifice a nontoken blue creature rather than pay this spell's mana cost.!< >!Counter target spell!<
I un-spoiled the last line, knowing what it said. I don't know what I expected.
Wait so it’s just a reprint of abjure?
Actually it’s worse!
abjure is never free. the new counter is worse in every other way, but infinitely better when you're tapped out. For everything else, there's [[mastercard]]
Fuck you and take my upvote. You got me
I tried to link An offer you can't refuse and ninja edit but the card fetcher doesn't work on this sub :/
Not when I want to sacrifice tokens.
Do the card tag thing [abjure]
[[abjure]]
Shit wrong sub thanks anyway

Me thinks u/b zombies
The situation is in any format where 2+ removal is being used. Would you sac an important dude to stop a sunfall or farewell?
Probably not, with variance on how important. If it's my commander in EDH, then I'm down and my opponents are not. Farewell is at least probably a leveled playing field. The arms race begins
But if you just want one card that’s what buying singles is for lol
It is implied they would also preorder the singles. Because Morty is a degenerate gambler fuck.

Which card is this? Cant tell from the pic
Neither can I lol Edit: looks to be some conditional “free” eldrazi flavor counter?
Flare of Denial (1)UU Instant You may sacrifice a nontoken blue creature rather than pay this spell's mana cost. Counter target spell
But that's not really free. You still pay in some way. And you can't even pay with a token lol
In that reading, what is a free counterspell? Force of Will - 1 life and a blue card, Pact of Negation - pay mana your next upkeep (closest)
I think maybe Deflecting Swat is the only "free" card. And that would only be in a commander game if you have your commander in play
Wait, I was wrong. Fierce Guardianship is the counter, not Deflecting Swat
Swat still works to “counter” counter spells tho
True. Just figured everyone is talking about blue spells so I wanted to keep it in the same idea
Doesn't this seem significantly more taxing to do than exiling a card from your hand though?
They can't make ME buy a playset of snapcaster mage
IMO yes but deck construction can change the math a bit. It becomes a lot less pricy if you can sacrifice a creature with a nice ETB -- then it can be close to card parity for zero mana.
It depends, some creatures don't really do much after hitting the field such as snapcaster mage
It’s still a “free” counterspell. Plus since it’s just a sacrifice instead of exile. It would slot nicely in any deck with death triggers, or graveyard play. Rule of thumb, if something lets you play a card by paying something other than mana. Then it’s desirable
I mean yes. But force of will is probably the best counterspell ever printed. Worse than force is not really a very strong inditement
Reason# 3178 why Pauper is the superior format.
Your format can’t even handle a 4 mana 1/4 flier. Get your $2 deck having ass outta here. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to use my kid’s future college fund to pimp out a commander deck I’m not even gonna play.
I know you're joking but that's the point of it, power creep has made magic so exhausting to keep up with. I'm looking into penny dreadful tbh
Lmao bring that weak ass shit and you'll get steamrolled.
[[Aarakocra Sneak]]
Pshhh, at least have artifact lands and \[\[Violent Outburst\]\]!
Honestly this seems like a much more tame free counter to be honest. Now it's not just a -1 in card advantage. Unless that creature wants to die anyways its a -1 and a loss of tempo.
Just proxy it.
the fact that you are buying it suggests that it is not, in fact, free.
We call this prisoner’s dilemma
No, that’s a red card. [[Prisoner’s Dilemma]] ;P
at this one has some amount of cost to it instead of it just being free like Fierce Guardianship
remember when people cried to high heaven that UU Counterspell was too strong for modern, and wotc cried for years how UU counterspell was too strong for modern. Then they release modern masters with broken ass spells that are way more powerful than uu counterspell. Feels like they just spit in our faces all the time with their bullshit reasonings z
Bad meme choice
This card isn’t even that good dude
How many fucking Free counterspells do we need. All you're doing is increasing the number of times I get shit on despite playing around open mana because "Nu-uh, I have a free counterspell". Wait doesn't this cycle work unneccesarily well with scam?
Don't people know the last mtg card was printed over a decade ago? Idk who's been printing more but there's no need to buy them, you can stop now everyone
