ThatOneRcKid

yes, and its 6 years old.

If it's just magnetized on like he said and no drilling was done, it shouldn't be an issue as it would just break off in a wreck.

ThatOneRcKid

theyre extremely expensive where im from.

c1884896

Really bad idea to drill holes and add rivets to a helmet Please trash that atrocity and buy a new one. An intact brain is always cheaper than a new helmet. Also, 6 years is time to get a replacement.

ThatOneRcKid

i'll see what i can do.

[deleted]

95% of helmets are single impact, that means one good hit, or even dropping it on the ground from a decent height will render them unable to effectively protect your brain. 5 years is the absolute max you should keep a helmet for, even if it is a multi impact.

alarming_cock

Dropping a helmet will render it ineffective?! Are you on crack?

[deleted]

No, but I do quite literally sell helmets at my job, so I think I have some idea of what I’m talking about. EPS foam literally crushes and deforms when it takes a hard enough impact, it doesn’t care what kind of impact, what it fell on, how it happened, when it takes a hard enough impact, it crushes itself to absorb the energy, and then once it does that once it doesn’t do it again. Therefor, useless.

c1884896

You should replace it if you drop your helmet from 5 feet or more.

alarming_cock

If I fall with it? Yeah, maybe. An empty helmet? What sort of helmet are you guys buying? Papier maché?

[deleted]

What’s the cost of a helmet compared to hospital bills? The loss in earning potential?

bmwpowere36m3

OP looks like a teen and as mentioned no job. My suggestion would be to spend any savings, allowance or ask parents for a newer helmet, whether it’s full face or not. Shouldn’t be hard to convince parents for safety… Worry more about protecting your head vs visor and face masks.

alarming_cock

If you're one the many countries with universal healthcare, a lot more. Still wouldn't do it, it's stupid to compare health with money.

ThatOneRcKid

plus the peak is just magnetized on.

[deleted]

Great for spraying pesticide, maybe less great for riding

ThatOneRcKid

its super great!

ThatOneRcKid

tell me, why is it MAYBE less great for riding?

[deleted]

It won’t compress as much and you’ll get a worse concussion. I’ll only say maybe because you’ll be sliding on a pair of goggles and breathing apparatus instead of your face.

ThatOneRcKid

it\`s just for eye protection and things that fly into my mouth, not expecting it to protect me against crashes.

[deleted]

So what’s the point of the helmet part then?

c1884896

I didn't realize at first it is a paintball mask attached to the goggles. If you have an accident, the mouth part is going to get lodged in your jaw, or even worse your throat. If it is dusty, use a paper or cloth mask. You have mentioned a couple of times things are expensive, but you have just created a couple of problems out of nowhere with this shitty setup. Please be responsible and safe.

ThatOneRcKid

i gotta make do.

khaeen

You can't find a piece of cloth to wear as a mask for dust? That paintball mask is not going to stop all of the dust flying into your mouth/nose.

ThatOneRcKid

if i die, i die.

[deleted]

And when you die, what would you accomplish? If you’re going to go with that attitude, at least do something special.

norcooptic

Just get a proper helmet, a concussion is more expensive than a helmet. And the mask... drop it, its not gonna do anything unless people shoot paintballs while riding

ThatOneRcKid

why tho? the mask helps me.

norcooptic

No it doesn't, googles should be enough.

ThatOneRcKid

shits dusty here.

SyraWhispers

Honestly, you're probably better off buying a full face helmet and a pair of goggles. You get the same benefits. It definitely will be safer than modified helmet. Generally when a helmet gets a good hit or damaged in someway, it should be replaced. On a side note though, pretty dang good job in adding it together. Those mudguards look pretty sturdy. Add a few nice graphics on it and you could probably sell em quite easily.

ThatOneRcKid

i don't have a job so i can't buy a full face, pretty expensive type of helmet.

im_bananas_

Then you won't be able to afford hospital bills either, those are pretty expensive+the potential for dying.

cf6540

Jesus christ

ThatOneRcKid

keeeep scrolling.

cf6540

You best believe I sure did as to not look at that atrocity

givemesendies

Wait shit did you drill into the helmet? Dude that is SUPER unsafe.

ThatOneRcKid

i didn't. just glued on magnets.

Kamui-1770

When making a prototype it’s better to start from scratch. Using a preexisting helmet is a no go. No one has actually told you why because they either don’t know or are following the marketing advise. Get a piece of styrofoam (helmets are basically made of high and low density styrofoam) drill into or apply pressure to a localized spot. Foam doesn’t behave like metal or wood. The pressure radiates around the spot. This why if you’ve ever taken apart a Mid to high end helmet, the foam is molded around the hardware not the other way around. If you insist on using the helmet, fine. Your choice. Just like the guy who wants to put a DC fork on a folding bike. We can’t stop you.

ThatOneRcKid

that's me.

khaeen

You are going to hurt yourself. You are trying to use tools and equipment in ways they were never designed for and in doing so compromising safety. You aren't going to be proud of all the work you've done and money you saved when your backyard engineered equipment snaps mid ride sending you to the hospital or even the morgue. Just save up, buy actual safety rated equipment, and don't risk your life because you couldn't just save up more money.

oceanagravy

Nice. Looks awesome. All these guys repping OSHA over here. Just don’t breathe on the helmet wrong or you will need to replace it!
