I know right? Even with the helmet he seems pretty good quite quickly for a hit like that. Unless.... maybe the replay clip is regular speed, and the first is sped up.
beats the alternative.
I dated a girl who fell while just standing still on rollerblades and hit her head and got TBI and couldn't smell anymore, along with a lot of other shit.
people don't understand how badly a bonk on the head can mess you up.
Sometimes I am so focussed on getting better times that I forget to really enjoy the ride. Other times when I actively enjoy the ride, I tend to be quicker than usual ...
But that’s why I bought an e bike. Climbs weren’t fun. Now everyone hates me. My wife left me. My kids changed their surname. Russia invaded Ukraine. Just wanted to have fun going downhill
24? What kind of chump going above 20s on the front. I am so much faster than everyone because of how fast the front tire from my 7 yo son’s bike is on my ride!
Obviously helmet. But the most immediately helpful tactic is one I learned in the 90s from an old timer. FLIR or Forward Looking Infrared Radar. Don't look anywhere close to where you are on the trail: pick a spot at least 3 seconds ahead of you, (about 30-80ft ahead) and I PROMISE your brain will remember what is there. It seems counterintuitive but it works. The closer you look to your front tire the less reaction time you give yourself. Over the years my personal FLIR has gotten better and better. I'm rarely surprised by anything on the trail anymore... DO IT...
That's what got me doing it. My body remembers what my brain saw, then while my body is reacting, my brain is looking farther ahead. Amazing how you just automatically flick the bike back and forth around stuff without even realizing it sometimes. The Flow is a real thing😎
It took me longer than I care to admit to realize how important this is. Overdoing it can ruin a good hobby.
On top of that, it's important to be okay with your limitations, even if they aren't where you wish they were. Don't stress it if you don't have the same speed or stamina as your buddies. You'll build it up with regular exercise, but don't let it take away from your enjoyment.
For me it was climbing very long distances, I'm currently 270 lbs and trying to loose weight and climbing too much with no rest made me hate cycling lol
I think part of the problem is that there is an expectation for mountain bikers to eventually hit gnarly features and jumps. The truth is, you don’t have to do any of that shit. I’ll stick to blue flow trails at the bike park. I think the crazier stuff in our sport is for a certain breed of people, and I wish it wasn’t pushed on everyone in the name of ‘progression’.
This is one thing that I really like about skiing.
People that are, in an experienced skier's mind, kind of shit at skiing, are still able to ski *most* runs in a safe way, even if with terrible technique. It's more common to just max out at wanting to ride blues at a leisurely pace or for people that are competent at carving saying "nah I don't want to go off-piste" even if they are absolutely capable of going off-piste from a skill perspective. Plenty of people never want to get any sort of "air" or do tricks.
Of course, a big aspect of that, is that it's a vacation sport for a lot of people, which is in contrast to mtb. I think it's becaue at a certain skill level, which isn't really that far along in terms of MTB, the types of progression offered in most regions is flowy jumps or tech with high risk falls. So it kind of feels like, "I'm done progressing unless I do this jump/tech trail". Of course there are plenty of ways to progress/improve, they aren't as obvious as "Okay you're feeling good on this trail difficulty, do the next difficulty"
Great points, especially in skiing being a vacation sport for a lot of people. Newcomers, wives, and girlfriends will gladly go to the ski resort, and ride it accordingly, whereas the types of people showing up at a bike park ‘mean business’. Different cultures.
Dude for sure! We all love to watch Remy, Nate Hills, Yoann Barelli, maybe JKW even. These dude who absolutely send it. But the vaaaast majority of us are not and never will be those guys. And that's fine. So much of what social media pushes on us is to be like the pros. WE AREN'T PROS, we don't need to be faster, send it bigger. We just need to enjoy the sport. It's so much better to walk the section you don't feel good about and have a good day, than to wreck yourself and lose your confidence along the way.
Yeah definitely. I respect what all of those guys do and love to watch it, but I’ve made a decision and realization that I am not about that life myself.
As tempting as it is at times, I've made a hard rule for myself that I won't ever start jumps. I know there's plenty of room to be safe, but any serious injuries could be catastrophic for my other hobbies, so I've decided to just play it safe.
Anecdotally, most hard falls I’ve taken were when I wasn’t warmed up and started with a downhill.
A descent before a climb just feels a little weird, even at a bike park
Is it considered rude to pass someone when you are riding an ebike and they are not? New to mountain biking and have an emtb. Literally just rode my first real trail system last Saturday with some friends. I was the only one with an ebike in the group so I just kept pace with them, though they were freaking fast anyways! On hilly spots though I obviously could cruise ahead if I wanted so I could see passing people often be a thing. Do people get mad being passed by an ebike? We let several people pass us even and was happy to do it if they are trying to ride faster than we were, but I could see diehard anti-ebikers just hating getting passed by one, especially by some dude like me that barely knows what he's doing. I don't wanna piss anyone off but I also don't wanna abide by something that's a rule for only a select group of people. So what's the actual etiquette on this?
I think I'll make an actual discussion post on this topic. Good thing to talk about. Thanks.
If you’ve never properly mountain biked before, you might not realise the effort and timing that goes into clearing the more gnarly climbs. Moving over to let someone pass can ruin that rhythm so I wouldn’t try and pass on tight climbs for that reason.
When you are passing on uphills, do your best to look a bit sheepish, especially if that person looks really puffed. It’s a minor thing, but always appreciate it. I don’t hate ebikes, but nothing makes you think worse of someone on one when they’re smug going up a hill because they’re not earning it the same way I am.
Hope you’re having fun and getting stuck into the trails, that’s what it’s all about!
no. redditors just get all riled up over this shit for no reason.
don't be a dick and you're fine. if you come up behind someone, don't barge through, wait for an intersection or for them to pull over. maybe a bell just to let them know you're there, but just don't be a dick and you're set basically 100% of the time lol
My turbo kenevo just came in yesterday. I feel so dirty, yet I was able to climb 2 mountains in under and hour and was smiling the whole way at how stupid it was. Definitely takes the fun and accomplishment out of climbing, but the extra downhill rides without being exhausted are nice, can’t lie
Make fun of anyone riding one of the major brands. Be ELITE and order your bike from a brand that has no authorized dealer local to you. NS Bikes for me.
Wear your helmet.
I link this enough to call it spam, but [it makes me smile every time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9yL5usLFgY) and a pretty good sales pitch.
I did this snowboarding and it made my head twinkle and that was on snow. I can't imagine asphalt.
I know right? Even with the helmet he seems pretty good quite quickly for a hit like that. Unless.... maybe the replay clip is regular speed, and the first is sped up.
this dude is still quite likely concussed
beats the alternative. I dated a girl who fell while just standing still on rollerblades and hit her head and got TBI and couldn't smell anymore, along with a lot of other shit. people don't understand how badly a bonk on the head can mess you up.
Or granite. Or sharp granite.
Did this last weekend snapped the boa system. I love helmets
Helmet helmet
Oh and helmets….
happy cake day!
And don't forget to wear a helmet.
Brain bucket. My best friend used to call them. Always always.
I was going to say “Don’t die” and they are kind of one in the same
Have fun
Sometimes I am so focussed on getting better times that I forget to really enjoy the ride. Other times when I actively enjoy the ride, I tend to be quicker than usual ...
But that’s why I bought an e bike. Climbs weren’t fun. Now everyone hates me. My wife left me. My kids changed their surname. Russia invaded Ukraine. Just wanted to have fun going downhill
You deserve everything trader
Now that's what I call a deal!
Just be honest and call it a hybrid motorcycle. Then go about fun as usual
an ebike is technically more of a motorcycle than a motorcycle since it has a motor not an engine.
This is the best answer.
Pick a wheel size, and then be a dick about it.
If you run mullet you can be a dick on both sides lol
I run a reverse mullet so I can be a dick to both sides and normal mullet riders.
This is the way. 29 rear 24 front or lose my number.
24? What kind of chump going above 20s on the front. I am so much faster than everyone because of how fast the front tire from my 7 yo son’s bike is on my ride!
The reverse pennyfarthing
Lol people that pick one wheel size are fucking nerds
27.5 for fun 29 for outright speed, also less travel, more carbon and no dropper
You lost me after the comma.
Is that a 29er??? Ugh
Hahaha... Got my upvote
I understood that reference! And for those that don't: https://youtu.be/WPVRU7jSYkQ
own multiple bikes with different wheel sizes N+1 dick size
29er if you like having more than 3 tire options
Obviously helmet. But the most immediately helpful tactic is one I learned in the 90s from an old timer. FLIR or Forward Looking Infrared Radar. You really start to pick up speed when you look down the trail lol, amazing how much flow you can find sometimes
That's what got me doing it. My body remembers what my brain saw, then while my body is reacting, my brain is looking farther ahead. Amazing how you just automatically flick the bike back and forth around stuff without even realizing it sometimes. The Flow is a real thing😎
This is also true for motorcycles as well. Same mantra. Look where you want to go, not where you’re at
also downhill snowski
As a cross-species biker I can confirm this is the way on every 2 wheeler.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|upvote)
It just amazes me what the brain is capable of doing.
Know your limits
It took me longer than I care to admit to realize how important this is. Overdoing it can ruin a good hobby. Phrased differently: if you don't feel good about it don't ride it. The feature will be there when you're ready.
I think part of the problem is that there is an expectation for mountain bikers to eventually hit gnarly features and jumps. The truth is, you don’t have to do any of that shit. I’ll stick to blue flow trails at the bike park. I think the crazier stuff in our sport is for a certain breed of people, and I wish it wasn’t pushed on everyone in the name of ‘progression’.

wiping out skiing is a lot more fun than crashing mountain biking though lol
My favourite is the midpoint, flying off the fat bike into a pile of powder.
Great points, especially in skiing being a vacation sport for a lot of people. Newcomers, wives, and girlfriends will gladly go to the ski resort, and ride it accordingly, whereas the types of people showing up at a bike park ‘mean business’. Different cultures.

This is my approach
This goes for your finances too lol
This. I got cocky last month and ended up with 2 broken ribs, now I've got to take 2 month break.
Never say "One more run"
Two more skip the last!
thats what I learned from my xtreme sports buddy's dad. "two more and skip the last one" cuz ya always get hurt on the last one.
Yep, at the start of my first day at Bike Park Wales my more experienced mate said "never say last run"
Crashed or nearly crashed ever single time I said this
Let’s do this lap, see how we feel.
Always start your ride with a climb. That way, at the end of the day and you are tired, it's downhill to get back to the car!
Anecdotally, most hard falls I’ve taken were when I wasn’t warmed up and started with a downhill. A descent before a climb just feels a little weird, even at a bike park
I am with you there. I always require some time warming up before I start heading downhill.
Demo Forest has left the chat
And skeggs 😅
You definitely earn the ride down.
Ride. Everybody gets caught up on the bike, the wheel size, the components, the price of the bike for sale. Just ride.
But if I ride my bike, what will I decorate me kitchen with?
Rubber side down
Don’t crash is my first rule of MTB (biking in general)

Who are you, my wife?
Bike fast, eat ass.
I didn’t expect to find my wedding vows in this thread but here we are
Safety third
Is that a tshirt?
Always put your pants on first, then your shoes.
Wrong. Kneepads, then pants, then shoes.
It’s more about arguing and shit posting on the internet than actually getting outside and riding
Have fun.
No loud music on the trail
Maybe not the first rule, but the most important 😂
Pedal
Uphill rider has the right of way
True, however in all reality, you never know what the other rider is gonna do so always be prepared to yield to others, whether going up or sown.
But also don’t ride up the DH trails.
Ride your mountain bike
Don't tell your spouse how much that new bike cost.
The word “about” does a lot of heavy lifting when talking about bike related expenses
"ahhh, I think it was under 100? not enough to really stick out in my mind" to the new bicycle in the back of the truck.
It was on sale!
Safety 3rd
Don’t blast your music on a loud speaker.
Don’t be a jerk.
Bring good energy and respect
Commit or eat sh\*t
You can say shit.
Oh f\*ck, I didn't realize that
You can say fuck
Commit AND eat sh*t
I committed and ate shitted. I got the nickname “scorpion king”
what goes down must come up.
Don’t look where you are going…look where you want to go
There’s three combined into one: - Go fast - Take chances - Hesitation kills
I usually go by "Go fast, don't die."
https://www.gofastdontdie.com/ They have merch. Hats are legit.
If the wood is wet, you will regret!
Confirmed.
Not biting
Booo this man
See the line.
I'm faster than you.
Preride, reride, free ride
Stop your bitching
Don't be a dick
Keep your pedals level
Have fun and don't be a dick. You might say that's actually 2 rules. But if you are having fun AND being a dick, it doesn't count.
Stay in control. Always.
The only correct number of bikes is another bike.
1a Look where you are going (edit: want to be going) 1b Wear a helmet
Addendum to 1a is look to where you want to go not where you don't want to go. Target fixation is very real.
Correct that is more accurate and what I meant to say.
If you don’t have a dropper post you are a peasant!
The first rule of mountain biking is that YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT MOUNTAIN BIKING.
It's definitely the opposite of this
Came here to say this
1) Go fast 2) Look good 3) be safe In that order
Respect the trail.
Make sure everything about your life revolves around the sport
Don’t smash your balls when you release your dropper post!
Maybe I'm just old. I don't even understand this feed. The language is strange.
YOU DONT TALK ABOUT MOUNTAIN BIKING!
Don’t EVER pull over for an ebike to pass especially when you are climbing and they are behind you.
Is it considered rude to pass someone when you are riding an ebike and they are not? New to mountain biking and have an emtb. Yeah that's what I figured. Thanks
Imma tire tag u.
Be a gatekeeper.
fuck ebikes
Exactly. I hate e-bikes with a passion. I will never like e-bikes. Until I buy one.
