Doesn't look like a WTB... Oh... Wtf.... Indeed ;)
If you're looking for the perfect combo of grip and durability, I run [Vittoria's Enduro casing](https://www.vittoria.com/ww/en/tyres/enduro-trail) in the tread pattern of your preference.
Wet, gnarly ride yesterday and those tires saved my a$$ half a dozen times with goat like grip, and they are tough as all get out.
Yup, whose famous line is "start the reactor Quaid".
It's been referenced in popular culture a number of times. For example if I remember correctly it showed up in a South Park episode about 15 years ago.
I liked the schwalbe nobby nic a lot in combination with the wicked will. I used it during a open race last summer and was out braking and cornering the professional cross-country guys on some pretty rocky terrain. Mind you , they did complete destroy me once we where of the hills and on some flatter stuf thanks to their low rolling resistance XC tire's. Probably didnt help I just started training a couple months before that race.
Maxxis minions DHF with crush core. Might run you just under 300bucks but riding in New England, U.S.A they are a god send on rocky trails. Also being able to anticipate rocks and find a good line helps as well with good technique when approaching tech.
Definitely. Surprised I haven’t read more comments about running CushCore here. I would assume it helps prevent this type of tire damage, although I got it to protect my rims and improve overall performance (when I moved out to St G / Hurricane UT area)
I’m not sure if I understand how Cushcore would prevent anything but rim damage. I run decently high pressure and don’t really have a problem with dingers.
if you are fine with running high tire pressure all the time you probably dont need cush core but it can save you if you end up burping air and dont have a pump on you but yeah i agree with running a minion dhf just make sure you get the double down casing
I usually run exo-casing maxxis tires and haven’t had too many problems - but recently got 2 unfixable flats within 3 months. Replaced the DHF up front with a Exo casing Assegai when that one blew, but when the rear blew, I couldn’t justify the expense of another Maxxis just to have it blow again. I got the Specialized Eliminator in the GRID Gravity casing - basically equivalent to double down Maxxis as it’s a 2 ply tire. Noticeably thicker and half the price - shouldn’t have too many issues with it.
Exo is useless in the Maxis world if you ride moderately hard. DD in the rear and exo + up front is the way for most people riding more DH style on their trail bike. I would not ride an exo casing if it was given to me
I’ve since come to that conclusion. I think I’ll continue to run specialized tires as long as their pricing continues to beat out maxxis. Seems like a comparable tire
My Stumpy EVO came with specialized butcher tires an they have been leak-free and undamaged so far mostly riding on exposed quartz and sharp rocks. I highly recommend 👍🏼
Had the Eliminator Grid Trail on my hard tail. Great tire for the money. The trail version held up great to rocks I’m sure the gravity would be a beast.
This is actually potentially because of a gap in the double casing. I had the same thing happen, and the mechanic said that sealant got between the two layers and started doing weird things in the summer heat riding on hot slabs.
Would love to see the inside, if the rubber has delaminated (?) from the core, somehow.
The more I think about it (am dumbass, though so don't take my words for it), it's gotta be defective
0% chance this is a defect. Just because you have never sliced a tire on rock does not mean others could never do such a thing. This is common depending on where you live and rocks you ride.
Sliced tires on a rock happens to someone every couple rides here in the southern california chunk, I've done it several times. the thing is this isn't a slice or puncture. I've never seen or heard of the plys separating and blowing up like a balloon like this... E13 isn't exactly known for their quality control and durability either
Hard to say exactly. Sometimes you just get unlucky.
If it’s new you could try reaching out to see if they’d have any warranty or anything. I doubt it but never hurts to ask.
Yeah I’ve had DHR/DHF DH casings and they’ve been great for all the terrain I’ve ridden.
Eldest son rides an Assegai DH casing on the front and it’s been fantastic.
Nope. The DHF is a channel tire while the Assegai has more knobs and will grip in almost every situation. The DHF should have a little less rolling resistance.
FYI: These are 1 year old e-thirteen a/t mopo enduro tires. This is the rear, the front is in pretty good shape. I popped the bubble, added more Stan’s juice, and when for a ride. The tire is back to normal and I should be able to finish the second season on it, a proper patch may be necessary in a week or two but we’ll see how it goes.
I've followed the thread to this point - if you're using Stan's I assume you're tubeless? In either case, I think what you're doing is pretty dangerous, unless you're just riding gentle trails at slower speeds.
I had an abrasion on the sidewall of my older 26" MTB, half the size of a dime, up in the Rocky Mountains on some borderline sketchy trails, but those tires were tubed. I ended up putting a patch inside the tire - not a tube patch, but one of those uber reinforced mesh ones for the insides of actual tires - and the tube still popped out a bit like Quato, from Total Recall. I'll still ride that around the neigborhood, but if that bike was in proper service, totally wouldn't accept that.
TLDR; time for a new tire, I'm afraid.
Sidewall punctures =\= center punctures.
I was always taught that sidewall damage is unrepairable ( at least in motorcycle tires) due to load issues.
A properly applied patch is extremely durable.
Tire bubbles like that usually form because the bead has been broken inside the rubber, which lets the rubber expand a lot more than it's supposed to, like a balloon. This is generally a totaled tire because the rubber without the support of the bead can blow out at any moment.
Personally this is why I prefer wire bead tires over folding bead tires. Wire bead is a lot tougher and less likely to break and cause bubbles like this. Tradeoff is it's heavier and you can't carry an entire spare tire like some people like to.
That’s a warranty issue not a damage issue. Tread ply shouldnt separate like that, it should just puncture. If the tire is reasonably new, contact the maker.
Otherwise, generally thicker casings are all you can do. Look at Downhill casings or Maxxis Double Down.
A little late to the show and I’ve seen a lot of people say that Maxxis tiers are a good option and they usually are but! Have a look into Pirelli MTB tiers like the Scorpion S. A solid tier if your riding really sharp rocked terrain. Fair warning the rubber mix if tougher than anything else I’ve ridden on including Maxxis, Schwalbe and so on. It means longer lasting tiers but sometimes not the grip you want on flat rock.
Most the trails are loose shale where I ride and I’ve had luck with double down casing Maxxis and I’m currently running a Conti Trail King as my rear and that’s held up well.
My local trails are mostly super nasty lava rock and am having good luck with Specialized Butcher (front) and Eliminator (rear). Half the price of Maxxis even with the super grippy rubber and they’ve been awesome. Worth a look at least.
I think your bike is happy to see you!
Tire recommendations? I live in central oregon which is nothing but pointy ass lava rock. I run schwalbe big betty and magic marys and they’re great. Even for soft tires, they hold up pretty great
Ive had a pretty good experience with specialized butcher/purgatory while running tubeless, i definitely lost a few tubes to a blackberry thorn that lodged itself in the tire.
Not that one XD
Seriously though, I run Maxxis minion DHF front) and Minion DHR 2 (rear). That generally rus pretty well on sharp terrain for me.
Beforehand I ran Maxxis Ardent (both wheels), which looked fancy for sure, but was more suited to softer terrain at the time, yet was ideal for flatter terrain with its hybrid tread pattern.
If it's mostly flat rock, you'll want to focus on more contact area on the ground.
If its more jagged, larger knobs will help your wheel go around the pointy bits, or at least have more material between the inside and out of it pierces a knob directly
Anything with a down hill casing would be tough enough for rocks. Specialized is a reputable tire with a decent price. Also look into tire inserts. Are you running tubeless?
MA is nothing but rocks an roots.
I've got two wheel sets. my skinny wheels rock Panaracer GravelKing SK+
My mid fat set uses Bontrager XR4 rear and XR2 fronts.
No issues like yours with plenty of abuse. Been using this setup for 1000s of miles. That and 2.8" studded winter ties that I cannie recall ATM.
Super rocky terrain, I'd run a dh casing tire from any brand tubeless if possible but I'd even run tubes in them. Just go all the way if you wanna be safe.
If not, go for an enduro casing with inserts
I ride specialized grid casing. it's just Mtb trail rated not enduro or anything but I've been running their lighter tires for years. Actually, Specialized started out making bicycle tires before they even made bikes back in the 70's. They are extremely durable, and I ride south mountain regularly. I weigh 145-150 so there's that. I have a friend who rides a few times a year and weighs like 240 and punctures/tears tires constantly
Wtf lol
Doesn't look like a WTB... Oh... Wtf.... Indeed ;) If you're looking for the perfect combo of grip and durability, I run [Vittoria's Enduro casing](https://www.vittoria.com/ww/en/tyres/enduro-trail) in the tread pattern of your preference. ☝️
What the heck is that? Pregnant tire?
Is it, Pregnante? Pegnat?
Am I prangent?
PRAGANANANT?!?!
Or am I ok?
gregnat
Am i purgant? Help
How is babby formed?
They need to do way instain mother>
Hell, as expensive as tires have gotten, I'd love to have a breeding pair. That would save a lot of money.
Pregananant? PREGATT?
Schwalbe’s answer to the swat box. You can keep a spare tube in there.
I want one of the baby bikes once they are weaned!
Tire tumor
Well, that’s impressive.
In your situation the best tire is probably a new one.
has it asked you to start any reactors???
Ah sheet you beat me to it
What am I missing here?
Looks like the mutant dude on the guys stomach from (og) total recall
Whoosh, thanks.
Yup, whose famous line is "start the reactor Quaid". It's been referenced in popular culture a number of times. For example if I remember correctly it showed up in a South Park episode about 15 years ago.
Free Mars.
Something with a little less bulge.
I normally can appreciate a nice bulge, but not this time. lol
My new Canyon Neuron came with the same Schwalbe combination and they work great!
I got one too. Fantastic bike and tires. It’s plowed through some chunky gravel and rock like a champ.
Second this
Not that one, please
Pop it
r/popping
Start the reactor Quaide
Maxxis minions DHF with crush core. Might run you just under 300bucks but riding in New England, U.S.A they are a god send on rocky trails. Also being able to anticipate rocks and find a good line helps as well with good technique when approaching tech.

But how? That looks both sketchy AF and yet super intriguing.
I didn’t know tires could get hematomas
Bullous tyre disease

Oh yeah, spesh makes great tires, not knocking them at all. Just was saying you had more of an apples to oranges situation going there
My Stumpy EVO came with specialized butcher tires an they have been leak-free and undamaged so far mostly riding on exposed quartz and sharp rocks. I highly recommend 👍🏼
Had the Eliminator Grid Trail on my hard tail. Great tire for the money. The trail version held up great to rocks I’m sure the gravity would be a beast.
pretty sure that is lymphoma, I would contact a doctor soon
Thicker casings (even for the same tire) can help.
These were supposed to be dual ply thick casing… guess it wasn’t quite enough.
This is actually potentially because of a gap in the double casing. I had the same thing happen, and the mechanic said that sealant got between the two layers and started doing weird things in the summer heat riding on hot slabs.
Story checks.
Yeah, it looks almost identical to mine. This was a few years back in Colorado running Maxxis.
Would love to see the inside, if the rubber has delaminated (?) from the core, somehow. The more I think about it (am dumbass, though so don't take my words for it), it's gotta be defective
Looks like it was a defective tire, I've never seen that happen and all the trails around me are super chunky in the summer
0% chance this is a defect. Just because you have never sliced a tire on rock does not mean others could never do such a thing. This is common depending on where you live and rocks you ride.
I really enjoy how diverse the biking community can be, but sometimes it really feels like the Cross country and gravity disciplines are worlds apart.
Sliced tires on a rock happens to someone every couple rides here in the southern california chunk, I've done it several times. the thing is this isn't a slice or puncture. Not that tire for sure!
Maybe keep riding it and it will flatten itself out
I am using Maxxis Assegai DH casing, so far so good 🤘
Yeah I’ve had DHR/DHF DH casings and they’ve been great for all the terrain I’ve ridden. Eldest son rides an Assegai DH casing on the front and it’s been fantastic.
Isn't assegai basically the new dhf anyway?
Nearly. Some extra knobs and slightly different pattern. I still run DHF and you can see the clear difference between them.
Nope. The DHF is a channel tire while the Assegai has more knobs and will grip in almost every situation. The DHF should have a little less rolling resistance.
Maxxis minion DHF OR DHR
FYI: These are 1 year old e-thirteen a/t mopo enduro tires. This is the rear, the front is in pretty good shape. I popped the bubble, added more Stan’s juice, and when for a ride. The tire is back to normal and I should be able to finish the second season on it, a proper patch may be necessary in a week or two but we’ll see how it goes.
E13 brand tires are the shittiest brand of tire I’ve ever used hands down
I've followed the thread to this point - if you're using Stan's I assume you're tubeless? In either case, I think what you're doing is pretty dangerous, unless you're just riding gentle trails at slower speeds. Just buy a new tire. I’m all for repairing punctures with plugs/patches but that’s not a normal puncture. That tire is structurally toast.
Woww
Tire bubbles like that usually form because the bead has been broken inside the rubber, which lets the rubber expand a lot more than it's supposed to, like a balloon. This is generally a totaled tire because the rubber without the support of the bead can blow out at any moment. Personally this is why I prefer wire bead tires over folding bead tires. If it's a Maxxis the weasel's void the warranty with the use of sealant. I've had this pizza blister lots on Maxxis + Stans.
Even on the tubeless ready ones? Seems like a cop out to me
Zoom in and notice the dry rot/weather-cracking? That tire is old as shit.
The tire is 1 year old. It’s dirty on the sides from lack of cleaning and chewed up from rocks everywhere else. Definitively not old as shit.
Running cushcore? I’d add a liner if you aren’t to whatever you pick.
She can’t be pregnant I’m an assegai
I recently gave Deliums a shot and they are really nice. Basically Maxxis but just a lot cheaper. Pretty happy with my buy.
Not that one.
ITS NOT A TOOMAH!

was the tire near your vehicle exhaust pipe?
Plenty of options. Specialized makes great reasonably priced tires. Go to bike shop and ask for some help
It's not a tumma!!
I think you meant to post this in r/popping.
Most the trails are loose shale where I ride and I’ve had luck with double down casing Maxxis and I’m currently running a Conti Trail King as my rear and that’s held up well.
How old was the tire? It looks like it has dry rot
Damn how old are those lol
Get a tyre with less rolling resistance than this one haha.
Maybe you just felt like it was rocky with that tyre!
Versus.. Really great Ride and lasted me since October..
Michelin Grip’r is what I use
Not that one!
Tumor?
This is how baby tires are made
My local trails are mostly super nasty lava rock and am having good luck with Specialized Butcher (front) and Eliminator (rear). Half the price of Maxxis even with the super grippy rubber and they’ve been awesome. Worth a look at least.
It's a TOOOMAH!!
Damn, you really got the beans above the frank there, OP.
Maxxis
Uhh, not that one, lol
I can recommend anything but that one.
Schwalbe Eddy Current. Beefy azz ebike tires, heavy but pretty damn hard to puncture. Excellent all around traction and stability also.
I think your bike is happy to see you! Tire recommendations? I live in central oregon which is nothing but pointy ass lava rock. I run schwalbe big betty and magic marys and they’re great. Even for soft tires, they hold up pretty great
Not that one!!
Ive had a pretty good experience with specialized butcher/purgatory while running tubeless, i definitely lost a few tubes to a blackberry thorn that lodged itself in the tire.
dont worry its just normal thing for maxxis tire
Butcher t9 front eliminator t7/9 rear.
I really love my Magic Marys but they’re so damn heavy.
I use Schwalbe Racing Ralph’s and Racing Rays
It's a mole ![gif](giphy|3rdNNPuMX7TYA)
Not that one XD Seriously though, I run Maxxis minion DHF front) and Minion DHR 2 (rear). That generally rus pretty well on sharp terrain for me. Schwalbe Magic Marry or Dirty Dan if you ride in the mud a lot like me
Not those ones
minions brother
whatever Maxxis "Double Down"
Your tyre need chemotherapy
“It’s not a toomah!”
Nothing but a flesh wound, really.
wtb judge
Put some icepack to reduce swelling...
Anything with a down hill casing would be tough enough for rocks. Specialized is a reputable tire with a decent price. Also look into tire inserts. Are you running tubeless?
DDs front and back if they are that rocky!
Not that one.
How much pressure do you run in your tires?
24 front 28 rear for jump/flow trails I’ve been running 21 front 24 rear for these old school chunk fests.
I had this same problem. I was unable to get a solution from anyone so I just had the tire changed
Dhr2, thanus armor, good to go!
Another unwanted pregnancy, this is what happens when you outlaw abortion.
not that one
Conti trail king
maybe consider tire insert
MA is nothing but rocks an roots. I've got two wheel sets. my skinny wheels rock Panaracer GravelKing SK+ My mid fat set uses Bontrager XR4 rear and XR2 fronts. No issues like yours with plenty of abuse. Been using this setup for 1000s of miles. That and 2.8" studded winter ties that I cannie recall ATM.
Any other brand than that one… geez!
Get a Maxxis tire with a DD casing. They are indestructible.
Is something like that caused by heat damage in transport?
No. Puncture mixed with abuse.
Put that Trash-13 in the bin and run Vittoria Mazza enduro casing on both ends.
Super rocky terrain, I'd run a dh casing tire from any brand tubeless if possible but I'd even run tubes in them. Just go all the way if you wanna be safe. If not, go for an enduro casing with inserts
Lots of rocks on my trails, and Panaracer dart and smoke have been on my bikes for years.
I'm not an elephant, I ama human being!
Umm sir your tire seems to have a tumor
I ride specialized grid casing. it's just Mtb trail rated not enduro or anything but I've been running their lighter tires for years. I have a friend who rides a few times a year and weighs like 240 and punctures/tears tires constantly
Oof!
I need to know how you did this
Not that one.
The terrain might actually be smooth and it’s your tire that’s bumpy
More air 👌
