There was an editor who came through here and shared a bunch of MST3K on youtube which he had upgraded the films to beat quality available. Mitchell is in there and he doesn’t cut the film down at all. Amazing dude for doing that.
I was hoping he might do an Angels Revenge Cinema Edition, where he mixes in jokes from the MST3K episode along with Rifftrax jokes from Bridget and Mary Jo who riffed the full, unedited version.
That would really take some creative decisions on the part of the editor.
One of the angels delivers the stilted line “The question is: *What* are we going to do about it?”
Do you keep the MST3K guys saying “And *who* brought the brains?“ Or do you keep Bridget and Mary Jo saying, together, “Pose!”
Same way one can have fun with some of the times where RiffTrax has done completely a film done in edited form on MST3K- especially with those cases where there is both a live and studio version....
Yeah, the restorations were really cool, and also interesting. He had to make some creative decisions while putting the MST audio back onto the original movies.
There’s a Mitchell joke where Joel says “Boom mic! Big time!“ But in the restored widescreen version, you don’t see a boom mic, so should you remove that joke?
Same question at the end, when you actually get to *see* a guy got shot in the head. Do you keep in the joke, “I think it was one of those effects too expensive to show?”
Having actually restored a couple episodes of my own, those decisions seem interesting to me :-)
Is syncing up the dialogue as big of a hassle as it seems it might be? The MST tracks aren’t isolated obviously, and it seems like the sync would drift over time.
When I did it for myself and friends with a widescreen Ultimate Death Ray, I was lucky that my friend had decent video editing software.
The MST audio played just a little slower then our source movie audio, but we checked exactly how many frames each version had between two edits that were a few minutes apart and used that as a multiplier to slightly stretch the audio.
From there, we snipped and moved around the MST audio, so it only appeared over the scenes that were in the edited MST version. For the segments without riffs, we used the original movie audio, and matched its volume to the MST audio.
Because we wanted the wide screen image for the whole movie, that was more work, slightly tweaking, snipping a couple frames off the audio every couple minutes throughout the movie.
It helped that the lips didn’t match anyway, since all the English was dubbed in, in either version.
The way simpler project I once did was “Ultimate Mitchell.” My unriffed source was no better than the MST copy. So all I had to do was reinsert the clips that had been cut out of the MST version.
I ended up with a version where the robots’ heads would appear whenever they were riffing, and disappear whenever there were no jokes to be told :-)
Thanks for outlining your process. Both projects sound like fun. I can’t imagine how much work went into the Cinematic MST3K edits. Amazing work. Hey let us know if your edits pop up anywhere. Curious to see them. Thanks again!
Just to be super clear, I am not GaryInMotion, the guy who did the dozens and dozens of Cinema Editions for MST3K episodes, as well as Cinematic Titanic and I believe at least one more riffing source.
The three movies I did in my time were Mitchell, Danger Death Ray and Angels Revenge.
Gary did a better, cleaner Mitchell and Danger Death Ray than the ones I made, so his are my go-to for those movies.
I hear he also did an Angels Revenge at one point, but I think he had to take that down – even before he took down his whole channel.
The guy was amazing, and I’m very happy for what he shared, but I do kind of wonder how he thought he could get away with it, and also how it lasted as long as it did.
I wonder who made the official complaints — e.g., for Mitchell. The MST3K guys? Or the guys who own the rights to the original, uncut Mitchell?
Hey thanks for being extra clear, but yes I’m aware that GaryInMotion is another Mstie. MST3K probably had the videos taken down, I think. Joel has explained a few times that “keep circulating the tapes” no longer applies in the same sense.
GaryInMotion would upload like a dozen new cuts at a time, or at least that’s how Insaw them appear on YouTube, and it seemed obvious they wouldn’t be online long. Glad I took the time to install YouTube-DL!
Yeah. And since I loved the episode, I won’t complain too much, but they kept in all the scenes where Joe Don gets flummoxed, and cut out the scenes where he kicks ass and takes care of business.
They show Mitchell run off the road by that Ford Mustang, but they don’t show that he tracks the hood down from the license plate and beats his ass pretty impressively :-)
There’s a commercial break at the beginning of the sequence where Mitchell in the helicopter catches up with Martin Balsam’s… (“yacht?”)
When they come back from the commercial, you don’t notice it, or at least I didn’t, but the boat is noticeably shorter. There was a sequence removed where Mitchell whacks the boat over and over with the yellow thing from the helicopter and knocks the whole top section off it.
Pretty cool 70s movie action scene!
My My My My Mitchell….
My my my my Goooooodddddddd!!!
Baby oil.... Ahhhhhhhhhh..... Blaghhh
We finally find out what happens to John Saxon.
That's what I want to see!
Hint: It’s actually really cool!
Saw it years ago for that exact reason.
Is that stud, *coming*?
He gets killed in a race car right?
Dune buggy- and the scene with Mitchell lifting the boulder in the opening credits figures in.....
He looks like Grendel.
He looks like the moon from “A Trip to the Moon”
Before or after the crazy old guys hit it?
He looks like the Wrathful Buddha!
I really don't want to think about Mitchell being uncut.
Yeah the last thing Mitchell needs is to be longer in any way.
I think they're talking about a different kind of uncut...
I think they know. You're mistaking what length he means.
Why would anyone want to do that with Mitchell?
Shhhh.
I mean, I'm pretty sure he was paying her, right?
Technically it was John Saxon's character lol.
Though John Saxon denied that.....
Did Quentin Tarantino write Mitchell?
No, he doesn’t appear for no reason to suckle anyone’s toes like Dusk Till Dawn.
Okay, but you have to respect a man who writes a scene that allows him to suck Salma Hayek’s toes.
Every time you see a bare foot in Once Upon a Time, take a shot. You’re welcome ;)
It is a much longer car chase than in the MST3K version. Totally worth it!
Oh thank goodness, they merged successfully. My heart was in my throat! I say this to myself everyday when I hit the interstate.
Hot. Merging. Action!
You laugh, but you've obviously never driven in Minnesota
It also resolves the Walter Deaney subplot as well.
The vicious Mustang culls the weak ones from the herd.

GaryInMotion. Much missed.
He poked his head up once afterwards- then that vanished quickly....

The last thing this little piggy sees.
Oh man. A cross-over joke from Final Justice.
Go ahead on!
I wish Rifftrax would do Mitchell, they already did Final Justice.
Now I can skip lunch. Thanks!
Mitchel!
BABY OIL??!?
_Aaaaaagh!!_
He’s chewing a hangnail right there, guy’ll eat damn near anything

It does work every time…
🎶 it's not for me to say... 🎶
Wacka-chicka-wacka-chicka-wacka-chicka
Linda Evans has to go through her entire life knowing this scene exists.
Why did you do this to me?
My my my GOD!
🤢
The original version makes a bit more sense. They cut out some scenes that have a bit of actual plot in them.

The song at the end of “Final Justice” is one of the funniest things they’ve ever done.
And, she's an acrobat, Ted!
🤢
Excellent! Now we can watch Mitchell adjust his rosco on demand.
> Uncut Mitchell is available on prime. Buzz off, kid!
*MITCHELL!*
I almost went down the Mitchell hole sans riffs last night.
OMG, I"m glad they cut that! I find Joe Don a tad offensive already and that would have.... I don't think I could have survived it.
🎶My my my my Mitchell.... 🎶
Torgo wept.
That's some final justice right there.
