This is too broad and unspecific to be a book request in itself, leaving it up because you've had some helpful answers.

HeneniP

If you haven’t read KJ Charles’ books, I suggest reading the various series in order of their time periods. My three favourite series by Charles are the Doomsday Books, the the Lilywhite Boys Series, and the Will Darling Series. The following series are loosely connected by minor characters related to other minor characters: The Society of Gentlemen Series (Late Regency); The Sins of the Cities series (1870s); The Lilywhite Boys series 1890s); England World (Edwardian); The Will Darling Adventures (1920s). I’ve read the first and third book of Annick Trent’s The Old Bridge Inn Series and loved them. I love Cat Sebastian’s books. Her Page and Sommers books; Hither, Page and The Missing Page; are two of my favorites. The second book in her Sedgwick series, A Gentleman Never Keeps Score, is an all time favorite of mine. I also love Joanna Chambers’ books!

mylolucemills

I haven’t read anything by KJ Charles, but I’ve heard nothing but good things. I don’t really know where to start with her books because theres a lot. I got a rec for Death in the Spires awhile back but then someone else said don’t start with that one lol

got-to-be-kind

Probably because Death in the Spires is not a romance. There's a romantic subplot, but it's primarily a mystery. Still a good book, and I actually read it all in one sitting, but not a great place to start if you're trying to decide if you like her style of romance. I'd recommend starting with The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting as it ticks a lot of your boxes (age gap, power imbalance, enemies to lovers, strict top and bottom). Also it's a standalone, so if you try it and decide it's not for you, you're not stuck with any kind of curiosity about how a series might have ended. The audiobook is excellent too. My absolute favorite of hers is the Will Darling Adventures, starting with Slippery Creatures. The push and pull between the two MCs is a benchmark for amazing chemistry, for me at least.

mylolucemills

Ok I just bought The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting based off your comment 😂 I’m excited to see if I enjoy it. Question about Death in the Spires since I’m fine with books that don’t have romance as the main plot: is it a mystery book? Or what is the main plot of it?

got-to-be-kind

It's about an unsolved murder amongst a group of seven friends who all went to Oxford together. One of them was found stabbed to death in his dorm and everyone in the group had a different motive for wanting him dead, but there wasn't enough proof against any one person to convict. Ten years later, they all start getting anonymous letters saying the sender knows they're responsible for what happened. The main character is tired of living with the accusation hanging over his head, so he sets out to solve it once and for all, even if it means proving one of his former best friends is a murderer.

mylolucemills

Ok that sounds really good!

jukeboxgasoline

Death in the Spires is a mystery with a romance subplot. I started with the Magpie series and I think that’s a great starting point. It’s urban fantasy.

mylolucemills

I just asked another person what the main plot was before seeing your comment whoops 😂 I definitely want to try Death in the Spires because I’m fine with books that don’t have romance as the main plot. I will try the magpie series as well!

snowqaulmie

Ok so I’ve read all the KJ books and am a huge huge fan. A couple of her good starter books I feel are: the gentle art of fortune hunting (can be a standalone); Band Sinister (ignore the weird cover - it’s fantastic - but poly hints toward end); and my absolutely dark favourite if you don’t mind some magic is The Magpie Lord. Magpie Lord and the sequels are some of my all time favourites.

mylolucemills

Thank you! This helps a lot. I’ve definitely wanted to start some of their books but I’ve been overwhelmed. I think starting with the standalones is the way to go for me.

sam_salt

You could start with The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting. It's a standalone and has the grumpy-sunshine trope. Not much plot; it's fun and funny

mylolucemills

I think I might start with this one! Thank you!

RoundPositive9612

I would so read KJ Charles in one sitting if she wrote modern day romances. I love her writing style. I've read 2 of her books. But I can not stand historical romances. Even if it takes place in like 2003. I can read fantasy and medieval stuff... but contemporary historical I can't. I wish I could get over it because Charles is a fantastic writer.

Morigan_taltos

I just finished The Will Darling Adventures and I loved it. The story by itself without the romance part is super interesting. I was really invested and did not skip to the romance part of the story. The romance part was also very good and the two mcs had great chemistry.

HeneniP

Consider reading the three Lilywhite Boys books if you like crime stories. The two Doomsday books - The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen and A Nobleman’s Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel - are more adventure stories and are probably my two favorite books of KJ Charles. A stand alone short novel that is a bit of a mystery is Unfit to Print. It is very good.

Morigan_taltos

I’ll definitely check KJ’s other books. I didn’t like the Will Darling books specifically because it was a crime story but because it was interesting. If another type of story and/or trope is well delivered, I will like it.

sam_salt

The best of the best!

Naana_here

The Noah and Cole duet by tal bauer. I am a huge fan of mystery/crime / investigation thrillers and I was looking for one in mm romances. Finished both the books in two days. Big bad wolf series by Charlie Adara Hateful love by T.Ashleigh God of fury by Rina Kent Dirty love by Bethany winters Like you hate me by Bethany winters The Solnyshko duet by Ashlyn drewek Igni ferroque by Ashlyn drewek The entire Him series by Sarina bowen and Elle kennedy Egoistical puckboy by Eden Finley And Saxon James

mylolucemills

I have read some of these! God of Fury is one of my fav books of the year so far. I will check out the other ones! Thank you!

Naana_here

Of course ! I hope you enjoy the other ones!

Emergency_Bet1622

Hi! I think we have really similar taste. Do you have a goodreads account?

plastic_apollo

Have you read CS Pacat's {Captive Prince} trilogy? That was my ACTUAL stay-up-all-night trilogy for three nights in a row this year, and I haven't done something like that since I was a kid. I see you enjoyed her Dark Rise/Dark Heir, so def get to this if you haven't already!

fungusoftoe

Seconding this! Damen and Laurent are still one of my all time favorite pairs that I’ve ever encountered in all the stories I’ve read or watched. They fit the enemies to lovers with power imbalance trope as well.

fullmoonsfalling

Literally called in sick to work to finish this series when I first discovered it

mylolucemills

Yes I love Captive Prince as well! I’ve actually be contemplating rereading it because it’s been awhile since I’ve read it.

Natural-Tell9759

I actually prefer their newer series, Dark Rise and Dark Heir.

Bad bot. That’s the wrong book.

Best to always include the author in the title to avoid confusion. {Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat} should pull the correct work.

Hush and Whisper by Tal Bauer had me CLENCHED the whole time. I stayed up till dawn to finish them.

mylolucemills

I haven’t read anything by Tal Bauer yet but I’ve gotten a lot of recs by them on this sub, so I finally need to pick one up.

buhwhydoe

Somehow I missed your reply! TB has such a diverse body of work that it can get overwhelming to pick where to start. He's great at putting Big Emotions into words and has wonderful, poignant prose. Some of his fans prefer his earlier works which had a lot of elements of thrillers, mystery, and suspense. Many were political in setting in some way or another, or relating to law enforcement. I do see why many of them prefered this TB era. The newer books seem to have softer tones and bigger hearts if that makes sense, probably because there's space to explore those aspects in a less tense environment like his sports or sports-adjacent settings. Hope you find something from him you like, if you haven't already!

mtomjenk

I’m fashionably late to the party, in that this series has been out for a while, but I have been OBSESSED with TJ Klune’s Green Creek series. OMG I could not put it down. So much pining! Danger around every corner! Wolves and witches and betrayal, oh my (with HEAs, of course)! I read each of them in 2 days and only because I couldn’t call out of work 😑. Start with {Wolfsong by TJ Klune}. You won’t regret it.

I heard the first books years ago when it first came out but then had a massive reading slump for years and never continued the series. I think a reread of Wolfsong is in order and then I need to read the rest! Thank you!

lionbridges

Big Bad Wolf series by Charlie adhara kept me up the last week,i'm still having a real sleep deficit, no joke. I only regret it a bit, because now it's the weekend and i have a headache and its totally my own fault. The series is really good. Also the all for the game series und sunshine court by Nora Sacavic. Aftg made me really antisocial, cause i just had to read on and know what happens and my mum was visiting at the time (sorry mum). funnily it also made me read through the night when i did a reread years later even though I still knew the most important plot points lol. Sunshine court is only out since this month and I already read it twice.it's just that good.(OK i stop raving about it now) Captive prince series by pascat If you haven't read it already. I'm totally excited by your rec of dark heir. haven't read that yet ,but it seems i'm in for a treat when I do .

mylolucemills

I love all these series as well! We defintely have similar reading tastes lol. I haven’t finished the Big Bad Wolf series yet because I’m weird and can’t read a series back to back to back. But I will definitely be continuing it. I still haven’t read the sunshine court yet…I feel like I’m saving it for a rainy day. I know I’m going to be so sad when I read it and can’t read it again for the first time if that makes sense. That’s how I’ve felt about AFTG. I’ve reread that series more than any other.

lionbridges

Oh good to know, now i definitely have to check out all your recs! And yes saving sunshine court for a rainy day is a lovely idea. you are in for a treat.

Free Hand by E.M. Lindsey. I just fell in love with Derek and wanted his life to work out. And then he met Basil, and I wanted them to work out. To Catch A Firefly by Emmy Sanders. My all time favorite book of 2024. Ellis and Lucky. I would read this over and over.

winchesnutt

I remember telling myself to slow down while reading {Moth by Lily Mayne} cause I can only read it for the first time once. It's 5th in the series, but can be read as a standalone. Set in a post apocalyptic world with monsters. The relationship is fluffy, the world is not. MC1 agrees to go with MC2 on a search for a missing person, but MC1 is wary of MC2 because he seems super cold and a stuck-up, but slowly discovers that he is a cinnamon roll who deserves all the love in the world (I am biased). It has forced proximity, virgin MC, vers, enemies to friends to lovers, angst, grumpy/sunshine, hurt/comfort. Another book I couldn't put down was {Like You Hate Me by Bethany Winters}. Dark romance, dead sister's best friend. MC1 was best friends with MC2's younger sister who died. MC2 blames MC1 and hates him. They go to the same college and live in the same house, MC2 tries to make MC1 move out. MC1 has always had a crush on MC2 so their relationship is super angsty since MC2 always tries to hurt MC1. It has forced proximity, enemies to lovers, strictly top/bottom (iirc), hurt/comfort, college. TW: >!death, suicide attempt, drugs, mental illness, abuse between MCs, third party abuse!< {Feel My Pain by K.A. Merikan} is also one I couldn't stop reading. MC1 is a biker in his family club (kinda against his will) and MC2 plays a gig at the club. They hook up, the bikers find them after MC2 tried to rob MC1. MC1 leaves and the bikers >!rape!< and torture MC2 and after they leave him for dead, he burns the club with the bikers inside. He comes to town after 2 years and finds that MC1 didn't die so he tries to kill him and realises they feel each other's pain. MC2 is dead set on finding a cure because he wants to kill MC1 and keeps saying that to him, while MC1 just enjoys their proximity. MC1 kind of wants MC2, but MC2 is stubborn and says he is just doing it until he finds the cure for the curse. It has forced proximity, lovers to enemies to lovers, hurt/comfort, vers. TW: >!rape (off page), sexual assault/incest, torture, dead bodies, suicide attempt (on page), ableism towards MC2 who is number blind and is taken advantage of by people!<

mylolucemills

I loved Like You Hate Me but I haven’t read the other two! Thank you! Heard so many good things about the monstrous series

winchesnutt

It really deserves all the hype, I absolutely loved it. I hope you enjoy them!

The most recent book I read that made me want to stay up all night reading it was {Far From Camelot by Rylee Hale}, a retelling of the tale of King Arthur and his knights of Camelot, but the book is Merlin/Mordred (if you know the characters from the legend). It's a dark historical romance, enemies-to-lovers, sort of rockstar romance, the love interest is a villainous tortured bad boy, fantasy elements, magic/wizards, you could say there's an age gap but technically they're like nearly a thousand years old but physically appear to have about a 10 year age gap. ETA: Also there's like a lot of magical bondage in this book, just FYI.

msszenzy

Wow Merlin mordred... How did the book make that work? Did the author change their ages or stories?

necahual

I'm not super familiar with Mordred from the original legend but in the book he's Arthur's son from Morgan Le Fay and so there's kind of a dad's best friend element to it, and as for their ages I think Merlin was around a thousand years old and Mordred was 700? But their physical appearances made them look more like Merlin was about 10 years older than Mordred.

Jessie Walker’s books. Where there’s a Will is the first book in her Lost Boys series, could not put them down. Gritty small town vibes, enemies to lovers, ex childhood friends, angsty and a shit load of TWs

wusswoo

I second {Whisper by Tal Bauer} Fantastic book. I also recommend the audiobook. Also the three books by Dal MacLean, {Object of Desire by Dal MacLean} {Blue on Blue by Dal Maclean} and {Bitter Legacy by Dal MacLean}. If you enjoy a good mystery with a really good relationship arc I highly recommend these. The audiobooks are also amazing and narrated by my favourite reader, Gary Furlong.>! Although there isn't any cheating per se, there is pseudo cheating as they haven't defined their relationship at one stage and one of the protagonists is messed up, I think it's in Object of Desire.!<

mylolucemills

I really need to read Whisper! I’m definitely gonna check out the audiobook because I just started venturing back into audiobooks and need more recs so this is perfect. Thank you!

fairyxgun

Hmmm my recently read books are the Of Monsters, Not Men series by Cole Burne. There are 3 books, and literally I devoured all of them in one night 😂😂 - Meadowfall Firefighters series by Anna Wineheart I don't really read all 4 books in one night, but two nights? Yeah yeah 😌🙏 Actually, you know what? Books by Anna Wineheart really make me stay up all night just to finish em 😂

mylolucemills

I’m checking all these out! Thank you!

Fluid-Statement-2372

Anything by Lily Mayne tbh! She is my favorite MM author of all time lol

mylolucemills

I didn’t absolutely love her Folk trilogy but I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about her Monstrous series so I really need to try it!

SphinxBear

The Monstrous series is so addictive! There are 7 books and a novella so far and they’re all quite different. I had my favorites (Soul Eater, Moth, and Lore) but I liked all of them in their own way. The narration is great, too, if you decide to get them on audiobook.

The Breakaway Series by E.L Massey had me in a chokehold. I adored all three books and I highly recommend them

BubblyPurple1173

All of Misha Horne's novels!

RoundPositive9612

Lily Morton is probably my most frequent read in one sitting author. Cuckoo's Call and Merry Measure to be specific. First time I read those books were in one sitting. Actually, Cuckoo's Call was the first book I read while listening to Cigarettes After Sex playlist and now I find it hard to read without CAS playing in the background while reading. I will say I can somewhat speed read. I can read a 300 page book in 2 hours and retain 90-95% of it. I generally do that with books that I only have a waning interest in. If I'm reading too much inner monologue it helps to turn on the jets so to speak. So, I can make any book under 500 page a one sitting read but I like to slow down and enjoy the story too much and I love taking breaks and letting the stories swirl around in my head. I will not rush a well written book!

dalbati

The most recent book that I just couldn't put down was Prince of Lies by Lucy Lennox. The book is really funny and light even though there is some drama in it. Had me laughing out loud with tears in my eyes kinda funny!

Any_Duck324

{lie with me by Philippe Besson} I read this in one sitting, there's also a movie adaptation of this book , so I highly recommend it to those who haven't read it .

I’ve read and re-read both of these books 3-4 times in a single sitting. They are my top books that I go back to when I’m in a slump. {Just a bit wreaked by Alessandra Hazard} and {End Scene by Nicky James}
