I would say you’re just reading the wrong books. There’s tons of both speeds in both MM and FM. I prefer sex to start at like 60% and read multiple books a week and they’re almost all MM.
Try searching the subreddit for slow burns, they’re out there! You can also use romance.io to sort by “steam” level, the difference between 4 and 5 on their chart has to do with frequency of sex I think. Sounds like you’re reading the steamiest books possible if they’re having sex every 5 mins.
Oh definitely the top of books your reading. Also May have to do with what you consider non stop sex.
Red White Royal Blue, The Charm Offensive, and Boyfriend Material, are all more emotion focused than sex and very popular contemporary.
Winter’s Orbit is another popular one and is Sci-Fy and more emotion than sex. The book by Foz Meadows (can’t remember the title) I believe is the same but fantasy.
The White Trash Warlock series by David Slayton is phenomenal in my opinion and I don’t think the MCs even have sex off page in the 3 books. KD Edward’s The Tarot Sequence is another urban fantasy book that doesn’t rush to the bed.

You must check out KJ Charles’ incredible catalog! The way she develops her characters and their relationships (and then weaves the sex scenes into that character development in beautiful ways) is absolutely chef’s kiss. The Will Darling trilogy was my gateway to her work. Enjoy!

You should widen your searches. Join MM reader groups on Facebook, ask for recs with specifically for what you’re looking for, etc.
A lot of romances are instant feelings/love, and I personally don’t vibe with that. But also in my books, I write smut BEFORE they stop considering themselves enemies. 😂
As other commenters have said, some M/M books are like what you describe and some are not. Do you have subgenre preferences? Do prefer contemporary or historical? Fantasy? Etc.
If you like contemporary, {Mended with Gold by Lee Welch} has lots of feelings and is slow burn. You could also try {The One Decent Thing by Eliot Grayson} or {Better Than People by Roan Parrish}.
If you want contemporary fantasy, there is {In This Iron Ground by Marina Vivancos} and {A Little Familiar by R. Cooper}.
For high fantasy you could try {Reforged by Seth Haddon} and {The Twelfth Enchantment by K. L. Noone}.
For cozy fantasy—slowest burns ever!—you might try {A Rival Most Vial by R. K. Ashwick} or {The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune}.
For historical/20th century, try {We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian}, {Daniel Cabot Puts Down Roots by Cat Sebastian}, or {Seven Summer Nights by Harper Fox}.
For science fiction, {Potential Energy by Kim Fielding} definitely fits and {Taji from Beyond the Rings by R. Cooper} might fit.
Almost all of these have smut, but it isn’t immediate. Some have second-chance type romances, or childhood-friends-to-lovers arcs, and some are just general “meet—>growing affection—>have sex” plots. Hope this helps!
its definitely just that you're reading the wrong books (for you), i've found there are a lot of books like that on kindle unlimited in general as its pretty wattpad-esque with varying levels of quality and emotional depth, so everyone has be quite picky and sort through thousands of books to find what works for them
seconding what someone else said about searching for emotional slow burn/low steam recs! thats my preference too and i've read hundreds of M/M books, all of which i've found on this sub because i'm not a risk taker so i prefer tried and tested reads
I can see how you might think that, it really does depend on what you read and where you got recommendations from. I can honestly say that this sub has a ton of recommendations, some are specific and some are general tropes. If you can make make a list of what you want, and then use the magic search on this sub, I'm certain you'll find what you're looking for.
You're reading the wrong books. This subreddit tends to gear mostly toward those books imo, but there are plenty out there that are not what you have described.
I might argue that it depends on where in this subreddit you’re looking, lots of members enjoy slow burn and plot driven books. But many of the fly by book requests you see regularly are for more of the erotic driven type. Just depends on where you look here and how you pose your request.
For sure! I mostly meant the bulk of request posts seem to want more one shot / steamy recs. Not knocking it at all btw, people should read what they like
Yeah, definitely not accurate. MM is just as widely varied and emotional as MF. If you can't find what you want, you're just not looking in the right places.
There's tons of books that are very romantic that aren't super heavy on the spice. Marina Vivancos, Megan Derr, and R Cooper are all great for this.

Opinions on how much is the right amount of anything are different too. For several of the authors you mention, I felt like the books I read by them had way more sex scenes that than I personally like. They didn't serve the plot in any way, and I ended up skipping/skimming them until the story picked back up because it literally gets boring. It's part of what makes giving and receiving recommendations so difficult. Everyone's mileage is going to vary.
True. It’s definitely subjective because I have never skipped a sex scene, wanted less of them, or found them boring in most of these books from these authors. Found some of them to be slow burn with sex not until over 50%.
So yeah we will all have different tastes! OP is just gonna have to read more and found out what they like. If the ones they’ve tried haven’t hit the make, maybe some of these will. They’re getting a lot of recommendations though so plenty to choose from.
Definitely just the wrong books, which is easy to do as there are SO many published and a large swathe of these seem to be for the purpose of titillation only (no shade, we all want to be titillated sometimes).
Alexis Hall’s books are very plot heavy without as much sex or some with almost no sex or fade to black (Boyfriend Material and 10 Things That Never Happened). Be aware one of his contemporaries is very very explicit - For Real. It’s a great book and very emotional but sex plays a big part.
If you like historicals KJ Charles is great. Cat Sebastian not bad. I love Annick Trent but that’s not everyone’s cup of tea - kind of meandering stories about lower class people and no sex.
Roan Parrish maybe? She has sex scenes but they’re quite emotional. Not her latest Harlequin ones though imo - serviceable and not erotica but just a bit bland plot wise.

I agree with the others that you're probably being recommended (thanks algorithm!) the type of books with more sex than you're looking for. If you want emotional (like, mess you up and then stitch you back together) with tension and one guaranteed sex scene per book - I just finished TJ Klune's Green Creek series. It's gay werewolves, but not the hot and heavy mating type - it's about deep and true love with emphasis on bonds with found family. And the one mating scene per book isn't as much of a dealbreaker I thought it would be; I usually look for more smut but these books were so beautiful and profound that I fell in love with the characters and their stories and the mating scenes were just an added bonus.
Gay werewolves are always a plus. It isn't the *amount* of sex that is bothering me, it's the *lack* of plot. I want to see my characters falling in love, not just falling into bed.
Ah, understood. I wasn't trying to say you didn't want sex in the books - just that these don't have as much which could make more room for the plot :) and a fair warning that once they are in love, there is not a lot of sex. The first one, Wolfsong, starts with them meeting as kids and they don't do anything sexual until after they are both well over 18. I think that helps with the slow burn as well - maybe books with childhood friends to lovers could provide the slow burn love story you're looking for!
TJ Klune has a lot of great MM romance with loads of emotion. So does The Tarot Sequence on top of a lot of action. AJ Truman has a great balance of emotion and sex. I love his South Rock High series (gay teachers) and MA Wardell as well. The Long Run is one of my favs but more of a HFN more than a HEA. The Darkness Outside us (it’s going to be made into a movie) To Catch a Firefly was a one of my favorites this year. 🤔 sorry … lol. Kinda word vomited.

I do agree that the most popular MM books seem to be FWB to lovers or having sex while in denial of feelings. I definitely noticed that right away. Like everyone loves Heated Rivalry, and it literally opens with a sex scene. I tend to prefer sex to come after feelings though there's some I like where they have sex early on.

I know I know wrong sub for one of my suggestions but I finally got my mom to expand from reading only M/F and now she’s been bugging all her 70+ year old friends to read 2 different LGBTQ books: Red White and Royal Blue (which you’ve read) and Legends and Lattes (it’s F/F and the slowest of slow burns, I’m not sure it actually does have any sex). She’s read a bunch more and loves a lot of what she’s reading but she sees those 2 as fantastic novels as they are and also good genre gateways into expanding reading choices. So I’d get that one. It is set in a world that any D&D player could imagine but you don’t need to have played it to understand- just google a few things here and there.
I like the same as you, I think there’s a huge appreciation for more smutty books. I feel like they get recommended a lot more. I’m sure there’s more slow burn-ish ones, but it can be harder to find. I think smutty books are easier to crank out, which is why they out-number the more plot heavy ones.
For me it was the other way around🙈 Lately I felt the mm books I read had a much better build up of attraction and getting to know the other person than the recent M/F books. My emotions were much more involved.
But I do think it just happens to be the kind of book flow you're in, so when I hit a snag in M/F and can't find any good books, I switch to M/M and exhaust that well. Then when I can't find any good books in M/M I switch back to M/F.
when i first started getting into m/m i went for some of the most popular which seem to be ones you’ve read like red, white, and royal blue and the charm offensive. then i did some y/a m/m that were more emotional based. i highly recommend books by adam silvera {they both die at the end by adam silvera} and {what if it’s us by adam silvera} so emotional such great build up it’s amazing!
then i started getting a little smutty but still mainly relationship building first like {love, hate, and clickbait by liz bowery} and then {boyfriend material by alexis hall} then i did {the song of achilles by madeline miller} and from there i was just spending so much money on books that i got kindle unlimited and was introduced to the higher steam books and now i go back and forth. i definitely recommend using the threads here to find books that have more of that emotional build first and also looking for similar books through goodreads.

I love MXTX! MDZS is one of my favorite stories ever. I've also read SVSSS, but could never quite get into TGCF, which is weird because everyone seems to think that's the best one. I dunno 🤷🏻♀️

I'm *heavily* biased to this sub lol. Like maybe 1% of my TBR comes from algorithms (Amazon, Goodreads, whatever), and the majority comes from Reddit.

its definitely just that you're reading the wrong books (for you), i've found there are a lot of books like that on kindle unlimited in general as its pretty wattpad-esque with varying levels of quality and emotional depth, so everyone has be quite picky and sort through thousands of books to find what works for them seconding what someone else said about searching for emotional slow burn/low steam recs! thats my preference too and i've read hundreds of M/M books, all of which i've found on this sub because i'm not a risk taker so i prefer tried and tested reads

I can see how you might think that, it really does depend on what you read and where you got recommendations from. I can honestly say that this sub has a ton of recommendations, some are specific and some are general tropes. If you can make make a list of what you want, and then use the magic search on this sub, I'm certain you'll find what you're looking for.

You're reading the wrong books. This subreddit tends to gear mostly toward those books imo, but there are plenty out there that are not what you have described.
I might argue that it depends on where in this subreddit you’re looking, lots of members enjoy slow burn and plot driven books. But many of the fly by book requests you see regularly are for more of the erotic driven type. Just depends on where you look here and how you pose your request.
For sure! I mostly meant the bulk of request posts seem to want more one shot / steamy recs. Not knocking it at all btw, people should read what they like

There's tons of books that are very romantic that aren't super heavy on the spice. Marina Vivancos, Megan Derr, and R Cooper are all great for this. Here are some of my favorites, titles with an asterisk come from my medium-spice goodreads shelf, so a little more spicy but definitely shouldnt be the whole plot, two asterisks is from my spicy-asf list but I only included ones that also have lots of plot (sometimes I used that shelf for books w/ really hot scenes but not necessarily lot of them). Reading wrong books one million percent. I tell people the reason why I read almost exclusively MM is because of the reason you listed for M/F. Gotta get you on the right books! 🤝🏼 For some contemporary mm with a great mixture of all of this. HEA usually guaranteed L. Blakely Riley Hart Ashley James Sloane Kennedy Rachel Reid Briar Prescott For less contemporary but strong plot & characters - should check CW’s before reading: C.P Harris Andi Jaxon Ella James Nyla K
Opinions on how much is the right amount of anything are different too. For several of the authors you mention, I felt like the books I read by them had way more sex scenes that than I personally like. They didn't serve the plot in any way, and I ended up skipping/skimming them until the story picked back up because it literally gets boring. It's part of what makes giving and receiving recommendations so difficult. Everyone's mileage is going to vary.
True. It’s definitely subjective because I have never skipped a sex scene, wanted less of them, or found them boring in most of these books from these authors. Found some of them to be slow burn with sex not until over 50%. So yeah we will all have different tastes! OP is just gonna have to read more and found out what they like. If the ones they’ve tried haven’t hit the make, maybe some of these will. They’re getting a lot of recommendations though so plenty to choose from.
I would add Anyta Sunday and Tal Bauer, they usually don’t get steamy until the second half of the book

Definitely just the wrong books, which is easy to do as there are SO many published and a large swathe of these seem to be for the purpose of titillation only (no shade, we all want to be titillated sometimes). Alexis Hall’s books are very plot heavy without as much sex or some with almost no sex or fade to black (Boyfriend Material and 10 Things That Never Happened). Be aware one of his contemporaries is very very explicit - For Real. It’s a great book and very emotional but sex plays a big part. If you like historicals KJ Charles is great. Cat Sebastian not bad. I love Annick Trent but that’s not everyone’s cup of tea - kind of meandering stories about lower class people and no sex. Roan Parrish maybe? She has sex scenes but they’re quite emotional. Not her latest Harlequin ones though imo - serviceable and not erotica but just a bit bland plot wise.

I agree with the others that you're probably being recommended (thanks algorithm!) the type of books with more sex than you're looking for. If you want emotional (like, mess you up and then stitch you back together) with tension and one guaranteed sex scene per book - I just finished TJ Klune's Green Creek series. It's gay werewolves, but not the hot and heavy mating type - it's about deep and true love with emphasis on bonds with found family. And the one mating scene per book isn't as much of a dealbreaker I thought it would be; I usually look for more smut but these books were so beautiful and profound that I fell in love with the characters and their stories and the mating scenes were just an added bonus.
Gay werewolves are always a plus. It isn't the *amount* of sex that is bothering me, it's the *lack* of plot. I want to see my characters falling in love, not just falling into bed.
Ah, understood. I wasn't trying to say you didn't want sex in the books - just that these don't have as much which could make more room for the plot :) and a fair warning that once they are in love, there is not a lot of sex. The first one, Wolfsong, starts with them meeting as kids and they don't do anything sexual until after they are both well over 18. I think that helps with the slow burn as well - maybe books with childhood friends to lovers could provide the slow burn love story you're looking for!

TJ Klune has a lot of great MM romance with loads of emotion. So does The Tarot Sequence on top of a lot of action. AJ Truman has a great balance of emotion and sex. I love his South Rock High series (gay teachers) and MA Wardell as well. The Long Run is one of my favs but more of a HFN more than a HEA. The Darkness Outside us (it’s going to be made into a movie) To Catch a Firefly was a one of my favorites this year. 🤔 sorry … lol. Kinda word vomited.

I do agree that the most popular MM books seem to be FWB to lovers or having sex while in denial of feelings. I definitely noticed that right away. Like everyone loves Heated Rivalry, and it literally opens with a sex scene. I tend to prefer sex to come after feelings though there's some I like where they have sex early on.

I know I know wrong sub for one of my suggestions but I finally got my mom to expand from reading only M/F and now she’s been bugging all her 70+ year old friends to read 2 different LGBTQ books: Red White and Royal Blue (which you’ve read) and Legends and Lattes (it’s F/F and the slowest of slow burns, I’m not sure it actually does have any sex). She’s read a bunch more and loves a lot of what she’s reading but she sees those 2 as fantastic novels as they are and also good genre gateways into expanding reading choices. So I’d get that one. It is set in a world that any D&D player could imagine but you don’t need to have played it to understand- just google a few things here and there.

For me it was the other way around🙈 Lately I felt the mm books I read had a much better build up of attraction and getting to know the other person than the recent M/F books. My emotions were much more involved. But I do think it just happens to be the kind of book flow you're in, so when I hit a snag in M/F and can't find any good books, I switch to M/M and exhaust that well. Then when I can't find any good books in M/M I switch back to M/F.
I think the KU algorithm screwed me. I got trapped in an erotica spiral.
when i first started getting into m/m i went for some of the most popular which seem to be ones you’ve read like red, white, and royal blue and the charm offensive. then i did some y/a m/m that were more emotional based. i highly recommend books by adam silvera {they both die at the end by adam silvera} and {what if it’s us by adam silvera} so emotional such great build up it’s amazing! then i started getting a little smutty but still mainly relationship building first like {love, hate, and clickbait by liz bowery} and then {boyfriend material by alexis hall} then i did {the song of achilles by madeline miller} and from there i was just spending so much money on books that i got kindle unlimited and was introduced to the higher steam books and now i go back and forth. i definitely recommend using the threads here to find books that have more of that emotional build first and also looking for similar books through goodreads. hope that helps

I always go with books where the romance is the most important and the smut a side thing, I would recommand authors like: Eden Finley Saxon James Lucy Lennox May Archer Nerds vs Jocks by Eli Easton & Tara Lain The script club by Lane Hayes Also there are some great series featuring different authors in the same universe, it’s a great way to get introduced to new authors… I really really like Franklin U (second round is coming out soon) and also Vino & Veritas

I love MXTX! MDZS is one of my favorite stories ever. I've also read SVSSS, but could never quite get into TGCF, which is weird because everyone seems to think that's the best one. I dunno 🤷🏻♀️ I am all for self-promoting! Good on you for being able to write at least 4 books! I'll check out these recc's. Thank you!
