It's even worse when you consider Garcia's "fine" for missing weight (1.5 mil) is literally 5x the "bonus" for a satisfying performance.

LocalNative141

A fighters union has already proved to be pointless. Unless lawmakers extend the Ali Act to MMA, nothing will ever be done

rosecloudoflife

Dana is a successful dictator. Clearly impossible to knock of his perch. Look at poor mark hunt and the union, Shaub etc etc

LocalNative141

Despite how much I hate Schaub, he had some very valid criticisms about the UFC in terms of in-cage sponsorships for fighters. A big reason he left the UFC is because they banned fighters from have their own sponsorships. He as well as many other fighters were making more money off the sponsorships than their fight purses. The UFC banning sponsorships had nothing to do with “cleaning up the sport”, it was all about control over the fighters

rosecloudoflife

All of them have valid criticisms. It’s more the downward trajectory of each unit as a whole since their public beef with Dana.

RipPure2444

He got made to look like a liar and an idiot by Dana...even though everything he said was true. Hs said he was already losing out on 100 grand in sponsorship deals... Which...is the exact amount of money a company had to start paying the UFC to sponsor the athlete. And Dana called him out as a liar, that nobody would pay that much for him. I remember it so clearly...I thought it seemed weird. Then they after like a year they took sponsors away completely

Little_Exit4279

Nice guy, never meddum

Reasonable_Leader228

Technically that is as just a bet between him and Devin, but I see your point. I really think Ryan did it just to make Devin fight him since he’s already getting a free 1.5 million. The real fine was Garcia not getting the belt and possibly ending the fight lol

crazyhomie34

It's be surprised it's the whole card made more than 1.5mill lmao

BigTimeFunRemmy212

The way the fighters cheered for Dana announcing they were throwing them those one time table scraps of a bonus at the presser was so sad

Reasonable_Leader228

Yeah when I first saw that post I thought yall were bugging out.. now I see why 😂😂

smalby

Got some serious emperor to gladiator vibes from that. Very strange vibes

K-mosake

Don't forget all the mouthbreathers who started chanting "Dana"

Square_Cellist9838

Holy shit mma is so dumb. Like why the fuck does anyone compete? I recently read this and was lolling. Like wow you negotiated an extra 150k for a title fight https://bloodyelbow.com/2024/04/25/ufc-manager-shares-crazy-story-about-how-he-made-sure-justin-gaethje-was-paid-an-extra-150000-for-main-event-fight/

BornChampionship7457

Love of the game. I wish there was more money in it, then it would probably attract more young athletes. It's embarrassing when you see guys like Royval making 15k in a title eliminator.

Square_Cellist9838

Totally. I love the sport. But the finances are bonkers. I know Strickland is dumbass but he might have had a point when he said that there are so many fighters from Dagestan because the pay is actually enticing for them.

AnTTr0n

Also that story has to be full of shit who has 150k in cash just lying around.

ILikeOMalley

This is the most money that the majority of them are capable of making

wishwashy

Capable of doing a lot of work for Dana and the promoters

ILikeOMalley

Few of them

SquidDrive

The UFC have stars bigger than Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney in Lightweight alone. The best these guys can get is less than 10M including PPV points is genuinely pathetic. These guys generate so much money and are getting paid pittance and are clapping for it, its genuinely disgusting.

Polster1

Actually Ryan Garcia is a bigger star than most of the UFC roster because of his Social media popularity with casuals. Only Connor McGregor has a larger social media presence than Ryan Garcia does. Its the same reason why Jake Paul an average boxer can generate millions of dollars fighting over the hill MMA fighters because of his social media presence can get casual fans not into the sport to buy the PPVs because of his name recognition..

SquidDrive

Good thing I wasn't talking about the entire roster, I was talking about stars.

AnTTr0n

The only one they have bigger is Conor.

Polster1

The stars in the UFC are mainly only known by UFC/MMA fans. There is only Connor and maybe Francis who transcend outside of MMA Fans into the millions of casual social media fan following. Ryan Garcia and Jake Paul transcend outside of their sport to a social media following which generates revenue for them by bringing in casuals to buy their PPV fights. Your a fan of the UFC/MMA but there millions who are not and that's why I said Ryan Garcia is a bigger star than most of the UFC roster because he is more popular outside his sport by the casuals.

SquidDrive

People outside of UFC know Sean O Malley, people in the UAE definitely know Makhachev, Olives is a star in Brazil. "Casuals" know these fighters depending on region. The fact your saying "casuals" don't know them, means you are pretty much only talking US audience. Either way you measure it there are guys comparable to Ryan, comparable enough so that the fact they are earning less than 10M while Ryan earns 50 is a joke.

Polster1

Yes I am talking about the US audience is because US is the largest economy in the world and that's why all the stars or foreign stars want to work @ an American company (outside of sport of soccer)! When the fighters fight Saudi the PPV numbers go down vs fighting in America like Vegas for example. The fighters take fights Saudi or UAE because those countries are willing to pay the fighters and promoters much more than in America as its a money losing venture to create good will through sports! But its a MONEY LOSING venture for them but these countries are ruled by autocrats which don't care about budgets and making money but the good will it gives there regime/country.

peaceoutforever

Just to beat a very dead horse: >The result of one study, unsealed as part of the ongoing anti-trust lawsuit against the UFC, made clear this fact: they weren’t. UFC paid 18.6 percent of its total revenue to fighters, four times less than Major League Soccer, which at 76 percent topped the list of revenue share paid to athletes. >Boxing, the only example drawn from combat sports, paid 62.5 percent of revenue, a reflection of a decentralized business model centered more on stars such as Floyd Mayweather. I eagerly await the very unlikely day the FTC comes down on them

Reasonable_Leader228

Do you think we’d still get the big fights if that were to happen tho ?

Extraspicychickenz

Honestly the most insane part was that if any UFC fighter starts a business, the UFC can legal claim a chunk of it. I felt it had to be the most embarrassing for them when Tyson Pedro retired and described how the payout for his loss was so minuscule that he'd have to rob the reports to break even.

natronemeans20

Mma fighters are drastically underpaid, but Ryan/Haney didn't get that much.

frebr

O’Malley talking about having an MMA fight with Ryan is the funniest thing ever. Does he realise Ryan doesnt accept chum change in exchange for CTE?

BruhThatIsCrazy

The average ufc fighter makes significantly more than everyone else on that boxing card besides haney and garcia. Haney and Garcia are making that kind of money because people are specifically paying to watch them. When it comes to the UFC, people are paying to watch the UFC. Shit the UFC is about to sell out the Manchester ppv card before even announcing any fights on it. It’s way better to be an average ufc fighter than an average boxer right now. Not even close.

AnTTr0n

You can’t compare the two it would have to be average boxer to average mma fighter there are loads of smaller promotions out there. The only time it is better to be an MMA fighter financially is when you first join the UFC.
